Feral Hogs-Boon Or Burden, Daniel C. Pattern
Feral Hogs-Boon Or Burden, Daniel C. Pattern
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
Feral hogs (Sus scrofa L. ) have long been considered a pest by most land managers because of the potential range and pasture damage that can result from their feeding habits. In recent years however, second only to deer, feral hogs have become the most sought after big game animal in California. Their great reproductive capacity coupled with the ruggedness of their preferred habitat has allowed the California State Fish and Game Department to set liberal seasons and bag limits. The freedom to work within the states liberal framework has prompted some private land managers to look at controlled …

Feral Burros And Wildlife, Richard A. Weaver
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
Feral burro have caused devastating damage to the vegetation and soil which has resulted in a deterioration of the entire biota. Wildlife numbers have declined where there is competition with burro for food, water or space. The Department of Fish and Game made a burro survey in conjunction with bighorn investigations. There are an estimated 3,400 free-roaming wild burro in California. They are found in 7 of the 14 bighorn study areas and have caused problems in each of these areas.

Modelling For Research On Chemical Control Of Mammals In New Zealand, C.L. Batcheler, J. Bell
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
Development of predictive formulae or qualitative statements about the probable outcome of control campaigns entails knowledge of bait quality and distribution, behavior, vagaries of weather at the time of the control campaign, and other factors which govern the probability that the target animals will accept bait. This paper collates experience in recognizing, estimating and using some of these variables for predicting the outcome of large-scale poisoning, and discusses possible approaches to the solution of some hard-core problems.
Rabbit Behavior Research In Australia And Its Relevance In Control Operations, B.V. Fennessy
Rabbit Behavior Research In Australia And Its Relevance In Control Operations, B.V. Fennessy
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
Research in Australia on the behavior of wild rabbits has provided a basis for improvements in the tactics and strategy of control. As the warren is a central focus for growth and survival of a population, a program for effective control or eradication should a i m at making the warren unavailable to rabbits. Enclosure studies of behavior suggested that poisoning would be much more effective when carried out in the non-breeding season. This has been confirmed in field trials. The behavioral importance of the odor-producing inguinal , submandibular, and anal glands is emphasized. It is suggested that further studies …

The Role Of W.H.O. In The Study And Control Of Rodent-Borne Disease, N.G. Gratz
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
While little information is available on the distribution and incidence of most of the diseases with rodent reservoirs, many of them are known to be widespread and may have considerable public health importance in some of the foci in which they are found. The World Health Organization is carrying out investigations on the epidemiology of several diseases with rodent reservoirs and on the biology and ecology of the rodent reservoir species themselves. These investigations are being carried out both at WHO research u n i t s and with collaborating laboratories. Based on the ecological information the organization is attempting …
The Detection Of Exotic Vertebrate Pests In California, Michael O. Keffer
The Detection Of Exotic Vertebrate Pests In California, Michael O. Keffer
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
Numerous exotic vertebrates are imported into California each year for use in scientific research, zoological gardens, the commercial pet trade, and private collections. Certain of these imported species are known within their native range to depredate agricultural commodities, compete with other species of wildlife , and facilitate the spread of. diseases detrimental to humans or other animals. The California Department of Food and Agriculture, in cooperation with other governmental agencies and conservation-oriented societies, is active in the exclusion, detection, and eradication of these detrimental species. Exclusion procedures include inspections of air cargo, truck, and postal terminals in addition to private …

The Role Of F.A.O. In Vertebrate Pest Problems, H.R. Shuyler
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)
Since 1947, when FAO began its involvement in vertebrate pest problems, its role has gradually expanded. Through short-term Consultants, Experts, Regional and Headquarters Officers, it advises Member Countries about vertebrate pest control needs and opportunities, fulfills requests for assistance suggesting needed modifications, and guides and reports on assistance rendered. Assistance may involve one or more international specialists for a few weeks up to national and regional projects of several years' duration. In cooperation with WHO it sponsors meetings of specialists, develops rodenticide specifications for international commerce, and has published rodent bibliographies covering 1950 to 1969.

Pheasant Management Recommendations, William L. Baxter
Pheasant Management Recommendations, William L. Baxter
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Information on the life history and ecology of the ring-necked pheasant was collected on two, nine-square-mile study areas in Clay County, Nebraska, from 1954 through 1964. The study was designed to provide basic data that would allow scientifically based management decisions to be made for the maintenance and enhancement of ring-neck populations.
Findings indicate certain steps should be taken to improve pheasant populations on state-owned or controlled lands, as well as recommendations to improve habitat for pheasant populations on land not controlled by the Game Commission, These secondary proposals have statewide ramifications and offer potential for significantly improving pheasant populations …

How To Build Marine Artificial Reefs, R. O. Parker Jr., R. B. Stone, C. C. Buchanan, F. W. Steimle Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Artificial reefs provide or improve rough bottom habitat and offer fishery scientists and administrators an effective technique to conserve and develop coastal fishery resources. With careful planning and organized efforts, local reef committees can build reefs to improve fishing and contribute to the recreational and financial growth of coastal communities. Advice and procedures are presented for: 1) selecting construction materials, 2) determining a suitable reef site, 3) obtaining permits, 4) buoying the reef, and 5) preparing, transporting, and placing reef-building materials. Included in appendixes are instructions for preparing permits, addresses of Federal and State agencies involved in approving or funding …

G74-157 Foot Rot, Don Hudson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Foot rot (necrotic pododermatitis, foul foot) can be a very annoying problem. Once started in a herd and "seeded" in the soil, it may persist for quite a long time. Although the incidence of foot rot may not be high at any one time, it requires constant observation to prevent serious economic loss.
The bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum has been reported to cause foot rot. However, researchers have not been able to reproduce typical foot rot lesions with this organism.
Recent research at the University of Missouri indicates that a combination of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus are the predominant bacteria …

Wildlife Habitats In Managed Rangelands-- The Great Basin Of Southeastern Oregon, Wayne Bowers, Bill Hosford, Art Oakley, Carl Bond
Wildlife Habitats In Managed Rangelands-- The Great Basin Of Southeastern Oregon, Wayne Bowers, Bill Hosford, Art Oakley, Carl Bond
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
All land management activities on managed rangelands will have some impact(s) on fish habitat; those in the riparian zone will have the greatest impact(s). Native trout populations in the Great Basin of southeastern Oregon exhibit predictable responses to alterations in their habitats; optimum production of native trout is therefore achievable through careful habitat management.
Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam
Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam
Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
The squatter problem is one of complexity and diversity, and lasting solutions to the problem have been elusive, despite the numerous techniques and approaches that have been tried out. This is primarily because the squatter problem has. not been comprehensively understood or defined.
The objective of this study is therefore to find a comprehensive definition of the squatter problem, with specific reference to Bangkok, in Thailand, and to recommend workable principles as a basis for their control and progressive elimination.
Proper reorganization of squatter control mechanisms can contribute to the orderly spatial growth in the city; and will promote the …
The Effect Of Correlated Linguistic Dimensions On Speeded Classification Of Visually Presented Trigrams, John H. Flowers
The Effect Of Correlated Linguistic Dimensions On Speeded Classification Of Visually Presented Trigrams, John H. Flowers
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The influence of two types of linguistic dimensions, word-nonword and consonant pronunciation, on classification speed of trigrams in card-sorting tasks of two levels of complexity was examined. In complex grouping tasks, which required the evaluation of more than one letter to classify each stimulus, sorting times were faster when the linguistic dimension was correlated with, rather than orthogonal to, the response categories. For tasks in which each stimulus could be classified on the basis of a single letter, no effect of the correlated vs orthogonal linguistic dimension was observed, even when performance was degraded by visual noise. These results provide …

Afdc For The Unborn, Patricia J. Winter
Afdc For The Unborn, Patricia J. Winter
Nebraska Law Review
Within the past year, the scope of the federal statute authorizing the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program has been expanded not by legislative amendment but by judicial interpretation in a series of federal decisions holding that states cannot deny AFDC assistance to unborn children. Four courts of appeals and ten federal district courts have so held, and two other district courts have issued preliminary injunctions to prevent state welfare departments from denying aid to the unborn. There is, however, a division of authority concerning this issue, since four federal district courts have held that states, at their …

New Standard Used For Equal Protection: Boraas V. Village Of Belle Terre, 476 F.2d 806 (2d Cir. 1973), Paul M. Schudel
Nebraska Law Review
The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Boraas v. Village of Belle Terre sanctioned a new standard to govern the application of the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment. Faced with an exclusionary zoning ordinance, the court abandoned the rigid two-tiered equal protection approach in favor of a test directed toward determining whether the legislative classification was in fact substantially related to the ordinance's objective. As a result of applying this interpretation, the court found the zoning ordinance unconstitutional. This note examines whether the court's test was correct in light of recent United States Supreme …

Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson
Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Teacher education has too largely concerned itself with a study of schooling rather than a study of education. In the next generation, given the concerns that I’ve talked about, we’re going to have to look much more intensively, on the one hand, at how much human beings learn as biological creatures and, on the other hand, at all the cultural and legal constraints on learning that exist. We will look at education in industry, in the community, in community action programs, in the tribal council, education through ritual, and through play, as well as through public schooling. The job of …

G74-154 Mosquito Control Guide (Revised March 1996), John B. Campbell, David L. Keith, W. Kramer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Mosquitoes are insects belonging to the order Diptera, the same one as flies. Worldwide there are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes, 150 of which are found in the United States. In Nebraska there are fewer than a dozen important species. Distribution of mosquitoes ranges from the Arctic to the Tropical Rain Forests.
The life cycle, control, and impact of mosquitoes common to Nebraska are discussed.
