Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
Thank you very much, Heinz.
You know, this program has gone so well this morning, that it is with some trepidation that l even stand up.
My compliments to everybody here at the table who has been before this podium today.
Hans, I think this is the best organized, best presented program on which I have appeared in many, many months and, I have appeared on a lot of them.
I "take my hat off" to all of you.
Beyond that, I want to say to all of you, before I get into the substance of my remarks, that although …

Rbe-Dose Relations For Neutrons And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma
Robert Katz Publications
RBE-Dose relations have been calculated from cellular radiosensitivity parameters and theoretical particle-energy spectra in tissue, of the secondary particles from neutron and negative pion irradiations. The theoretical results are compared with clinical and radiobiological data for normal tissue, tumors, and cells in culture. Formulae for calculation, cellular parameters, and the needed properties of equivalent “track-segment bombardments” are given, for several mammalian cells irradiated with pions and with neutrons of several energies.

Fatal Pox Infection In A Rough-Legged Hawk, G. L. Pearson, D. A. Pass, E. C. Beggs
Fatal Pox Infection In A Rough-Legged Hawk, G. L. Pearson, D. A. Pass, E. C. Beggs
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Natural pox infection occurred in a free-living rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) in northeastern North Dakota. Gross, histological and electron microscopic findings were typical of pox infection, and characteristic lesions developed in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) but not in great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) following inoculation with case material. Death of the rough-legged hawk was attributed to starvation resulting from inability to capture prey and to blood loss from foot lesions.

Youth And The Rural Resurgence, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
Many of us have been concerned about the apparent decline of rural America for some time. We have watched the outmigration of people from farms and rural towns. We have worried about the substandard housing and the relative scarcity of health care. We have charted declining economic bases I and shrinking rural job markets.
Thus, it is a.particular pleasure today to see rural America staging a comeback. A radical turnaround is under way in rural and small town areas. It is changing the destiny of these areas, making them more attractive places for young people like yourselves to locate and …

Intermediates In The Biosynthesis Of Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acids Of Bacteriophage Φ6, D. L. Coplin, James L. Van Etten, James A. Koski, A. K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Pseudomonas phaseolicola infected with bacteriophage φ6 synthesized all three viral double-stranded RNA segments, three single-stranded RNAs, and three replicative intermediate-like RNAs in the presence of rifampin. The single-stranded RNA intermediates sedimented and electrophoresed along with melted viral double-stranded RNA, annealed with melted viral double-stranded RNA, and were transient in nature. The relative amounts of the single-stranded RNA intermediates varied during the infection cycle and were altered in the presence of chloramphenicol. The replicative intermediate-like RNAs sedimented faster than double-stranded RNA, failed to enter 2.5% polyacrylamide gels, eluted with double-stranded RNA from a CF-11 cellulose column, were precipitated with single-stranded RNA …
A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt
A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study was designed to measure costs of long-distance shipment of meat by motor carrier. Costs were compared with published rates for meat shipments by truck, rail and trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC). Finally, meat trucking costs were compared with costs of trucking meat-equivalent amounts of livestock. Results of the study provide a partial basis for evaluating the economic merits of expanded livestock production activities in grain-surplus Great Plains locations. Such an expansion might aid in the economic development of the region and ease the chronic problem of rail freight-car supply. Proposals ranging from extension of present regulation to cover livestock trucking to …

Herpesvirus Disease Of Salmonids, Ken Wolf, Tokuo Sano, Takahisa Kimura
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
A newly recognized virus, lethal for fry and fingerlings, has been isolated from brood stock rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery, Washington. A similar if not identical virus has been found in natural epizootics occurring annually since 1970 among fry of landlocked sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) on Honshu Island, Japan. More recently, this agent was isolated from moribund and dead adult O. nerka on Hokkaido Island; Japan, but it remains to be determined whether or not the virus causes death in adult salmonids. The purpose of this leaflet is to bring the …
Response Of Nuclear Emulsions To Ionizing Radiations, Robert Katz, F. E. Pinkerton
Response Of Nuclear Emulsions To Ionizing Radiations, Robert Katz, F. E. Pinkerton
Robert Katz Publications
Heavy ion tracks in Ilford K-2 emulsion are simulated with a computer program that makes use of the delta-ray theory of track structure, and the special assumption that the response of the emulsion to gamma-rays is 8-or-more hit. The Ilford K-series of nuclear emulsions is produced from a parent stock called K.0 emulsion, sensitized to become K.1 to K.5, and desensitized to become K–1 to K–3. Our simulations demonstrate that the emulsions K.5 through K.0 to K-1 are 1-or-more hit detectors, while K-2 is an 8-or-more hit detector. We have no data for K-3 emulsion. It would appear that emulsions …

G75-232 Cow-Calf Herd Health Program Basics, Dale Grotelueschen, Duane Rice
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide suggests ideas and discusses some basic essentials of health management in beef cow operations.
Establishing a good cow-calf herd health program is a necessary step if profit is to be realized. Managing disease risk is an important aspect of a good health program design. Vaccinations help reduce the probability of disease but cannot solely be depended upon for prevention. Well-designed herd health programs address multiple areas of management in order to reduce likelihood of disease outbreaks. The objective of any beef herd health program should be to profitably produce calves having optimum weaning weights from a high percentage …

Epidemiological Definition Of The Cohort Of Diseases Associated With Diabetes In Southwestern American Indians, Karl R. Reinhard Dvm, Naomi I. Greenwalt
Epidemiological Definition Of The Cohort Of Diseases Associated With Diabetes In Southwestern American Indians, Karl R. Reinhard Dvm, Naomi I. Greenwalt
United States Public Health Resources
A computerized health records system has facilitated an analysis of the correlated illness of a segment of population afflicted with a chronic disease. Taking the existence of clinical diabetes as a starting point, the total illness experience of 635 diabetics, as shown by clinic utilization data, has been compared with an age-sex-geographically matched control population.
The comparisons show that, overall, diabetics cause a caseload rate more than double that of nondiabetics. In 17 out of 22 broad health problem areas, the diagnosis caseload rates for diabetics varied from 1.3 to 3.7 times greater than the rate for matched, non-diabetic controls. …

G75-269 Calf Scours: Causes, Prevention And Treatment, Don Hudson, R. Gene White
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Calf scours or calf diarrhea: understand how to recognize and treat this costly condition. Calf scours or calf diarrhea causes more financial loss to cow-calf producers than any other disease-related problem they encounter. Calf scours is not a disease--it is a clinical sign of a disease which can have many causes. In diarrheas, the intestine fails to absorb fluids and/or secretion into the intestine is increased.

Physical Science Modules for Bioscience Students
It is assumed that you have been introduced to the ideas of parametric descriptions of statistical data (e.g., mean, standard deviation, etc.) in the context of physical measurements. These concepts must be broadened and generalized in their interpretations when used in the context of biological data. It is the purpose of this module to introduce appropriate biological examples and employ them to generate and illustrate these broader notions of statistical analysis. Of particular interest will be questions such as: "What is it that the mean value of a data set seeks to represent when there is no 'true value ' …

Abortion: An Unresolved Issue—Are Parental Consent Statutes Unconstitutional?, Roberta S. Stick
Nebraska Law Review
In the companion cases of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, the United States Supreme Court acknowledged that a woman has the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. This right is fundamental and is encompassed within the constitutional right to privacy. Despite the Court's definitive position, many tangential issues regarding abortion remain unresolved. One such issue which the Court raised but did not decide in Roe concerns the constitutionality of statutes requiring parental consent in addition to the minor's consent before the minor can have an abortion. Of all the decisions handed down by state and federal district …

The Supreme Court Avoids Considering Sex-Based Classifications: Geduldig V. Aiello, 417 U.S. 484 (1974), Rebecca L. Ross
Nebraska Law Review
In Geduldig v. Aielo, the United States Supreme Court held that California's refusal to insure normal pregnancies in the state disability insurance program was not a violation of the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment. Over strong dissent, the Court held that California could take one step at a time in selecting the disabilities its insurance program would cover. Therefore, the statutory scheme did not involve a denial of equal protection and the district court was reversed. In this holding, the Court offered dicta which have sewn the seeds of confusion in the lower courts and left murkier …

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Most members of the Harvard !Kung Bushman Study Project who have thought about the subject of !Kung women's status agree that !Kung society may be the least sexist of any we have experienced. This impression contradicts some popularly held stereotypes about relations between the sexes in hunting and gathering societies. Because sex is one of the few bases for the differentiation of social and economic roles in societies of this type, it has probably been attributed more weight than it deserves. The men are commonly depicted in rather romantic terms, striving with their brothers to bring home the precious meat …
Rates Of Water Entry Into The Subsoil Of Several Soil Series In Nebraska, David T. Lewis
Rates Of Water Entry Into The Subsoil Of Several Soil Series In Nebraska, David T. Lewis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Rates of water entry were measured for 11 soil series representing many of the soils in parts of Nebraska where urban growth is most intensive. The wetting procedure in making the tests is critical and a 24 hour wetting time as usually recommended is not adequate for all soils if the percolation test is made during a dry season. Rates of water entry differed among soils even though a large amount of variation was evident within the same soil series. Statistical analysis showed a highly significant negative relationship between both clay content and bulk density and rates of water entry. …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
In many areas of the Midwestern United States, a safe and plentiful supply of groundwater is a primary concern. Groundwater is sporadic, unreliable, shallow, and often polluted, even though these same areas often have an annual rainfall in excess of 1 m.
The pollution problems associated with these groundwater supplies are both chemical and bacterial. Older wells are often the most dangerous. Linings made of open brick near the surface, cracked casings and covers, and nearby privy, septic tank, and barnyard sites accentuate the problems in shallow groundwater aquifers. High levels of nitrates frequently present in the shallow domestic well …
