Lead Poisoning Of Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis), R. M. Windingstad, S. M. Kerr, L. N. Locke, J. J. Hurt
Papers in Ornithology
Two wild and two captive sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) were diagnosed by National Wildlife Health Laboratory personnel as having died from lead toxicity. Ingestion of lead fishing weights by the wild cranes and of unspent .22 caliber shell cartidges by the captive cranes were responsible for these deaths. One crane force-fed lead pellets showed an increase of blood lead levels from 0.77 ppm to 23.8 ppm (wet weight) just before its death 15 days following exposure. Liver lead concentrations of sandhill cranes dying of causes other than lead toxicity are presented.

Prevalence Of Extreme Detergent Resistance Among The Enterobacteriaceae, Vance Kramer, Kenneth Nickerson, Nancy V. Hamlett, Caroline O'Hara
Prevalence Of Extreme Detergent Resistance Among The Enterobacteriaceae, Vance Kramer, Kenneth Nickerson, Nancy V. Hamlett, Caroline O'Hara
Kenneth Nickerson Papers
The detergent-resistance properties of 208 independent isolates of the Enterobacteriaceae have been examined. Of these bacterial strains, 200 were able to grow in the presence of ≥5% sodium dodecyl sulfate, including all members of the Klebsielleae tribe. This resistance does not appear to be plasmid encoded. It is proposed that detergent-resistant organisms he termed saponotolerant or saponophilic, by analogy with other microorganisms occupying harsh ecological niches. In contrast to their prevalent resistance to anionic detergents, not one of the 208 strains tested was found to grow in the presence of three different cationic detergents. This sensitivity to cationic detergents may …
The Role Of Emotion In Moral Socialization, Richard A. Dienstbier
The Role Of Emotion In Moral Socialization, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The major aim of this chapter is to discuss a research program designed to assess emotion-cognition-behavior relationships in moral decision making. While pursuing that aim, I will discuss the relationship of that research to some of the more enduring theoretical issues in emotion.
Theories of emotion wax and wane across a more extended time frame than is typical for theoretical approaches in many other areas in psychology. Perhaps these extended cycles of emotion theory result from the relative difficulty in the recent past in doing definitive research within the area of human emotion. The field was thereby insulated from sudden …
Regionalism And The Great Plains: Problems Of Concept And Method, Frederick C. Luebke
Regionalism And The Great Plains: Problems Of Concept And Method, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
American scholars have used the concept of regionalism to organize their thinking about certain aspects of national experience for many decades. Its meaning is imprecise because it has had to serve a broad spectrum of purposes. Inevitably regionalism means different things to different people; its content will vary with the purposes and standards of those using the concept. In literature, for example, a debate has been going on for a century over the merits of regionalism versus other theories ofliterary creation. Its intensity has waxed and waned with the times, but in our century regionalism in literature has achieved its …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
It was the Chinese over 3000 years ago, not the Americans in this century, who first used large-scale psychological testing (Dubois, 1966). But, as with many other technological developments, it was the United States that enthusiastically adopted the method (Haney, 1981). By now it is highly probable that every person in our country has been affected in some way by the administration of tests. Testing has become the means by which major decisions about people's lives are made in industry, education, hospitals, mental health clinics, and the civil service.
Tests themselves, by and large, are facially neutral. They do not …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
What a happy occasion it is to celebrate, as we do in this volume, the establishment of a national Buros Institute of Mental Measurements, located on the campus of the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln. What a culmination of many plans, hopes, and dreams! On such an occasion, we can take a quiet pride in our profession and in the life and accomplishments of one of our colleagues and friends, Oscar Krisen Buros, who with Luella Buros is leaving to us, and our posterity, an institution of integrity to foster the science and practice of testing.
How new all this …

G84-716 Management Of The Weanling Calf, Paul Q. Guyer, Donald B. Hudson
G84-716 Management Of The Weanling Calf, Paul Q. Guyer, Donald B. Hudson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide outlines a program for preventing sickness and death losses in newly weaned calves, including stress prevention, vaccinations, nutrition, and treatment of sick calves.
Sickness and death loss following weaning robs both calf producers and cattle feeders of potential profits. The weanling calf has not acquired adequate immunity to the variety of diseases that plague the beef industry. At weaning and/or shipping, the calf is usually subjected to various stresses, in addition to being separated from its mother, that contribute to disease outbreaks. A program for minimizing weight loss, sickness, and death in newly weaned calves should include: 1) …

Aeromonas Hydrophila And Motile Aeromonad Septicemias Of Fish, Rocco C. Cipriano, G. L. Bullock, S. W. Pyle
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Aeromonas hydrophila and other motile aeromonads are among the most common bacteria in freshwater habitats throughout the world, and are frequently associated with severe disease among cultured and feral fishes. Determinations of the etiology of diseases involving aeromonad infections has been complicated by the genetic, biochemical, and antigenic heterogeneity of members of this group. Consequently, motile aeromonads consist of a complex of disease organisms that are associated with bacterial hemorrhagic septicemias in fishes. From descriptions of fish diseases in the early scientific literature, Otte (1963) speculated that septicemic infections in fish caused by motile aeromonads were common throughout Europe during …

Five trials in five locations in the United States involving 512 steers were conducted to evaluate the effect of monensin [200 mg/d in .9 kg of supplement (Rumensin)] and estradiol- controlled release implants (Compudose) administered alone and in combination on average daily gain (ADG) in steers on pasture. The effect of energy supplementation on rate of gain was also evaluated in these same trials. The initial weight of steers averaged 250 kg and the average duration of the five trials was 124 d. Estradiol-controlled release implants increased ADG by 15.6% (.095 kg/d; P<.0001) and monensin increased ADG by 8.1% (.054 kg/d; P<.05). The combination of estradiol-controlled release implant and monensin increased ADG by 27.4% (.I68 kg/d). Treatment responses were additive relative to ADG response, with no interaction observed between the treatments. Nine-tenths kilogram of an energy supplement/d increased ADG by 12.4% (.073 kg/d; P<.Ol).

This NebGuide discusses advantages and disadvantages of renting; factors to consider in selecting rental housing, including apartments; and leases, costs and relationships with the landlord.
The word "home" means something special to all of us. A home is more than four walls and a roof that serves as a shelter from wind and rain. It provides us with a sense of belonging, a feeling of security and a place to relax and "be ourselves."
When we are looking for a place to call home, we have a number of needs to be satisfied. Some of these are very practical -- …

Effect Of Membrane Filtration Of Antimalarial Drug Solutions On In Vitro Activity Against Plasmodium Falciparum, J. Kevin Baird, C. Lambros
United States Public Health Resources
Antimalarial activities ofchloroquine, mefloquine, amodiaquine, and quinine in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum were diminished as a consequence ofmembranefiltration. Filtered drug solutions gave ID50 values up to 25-fold greater than those of non-filtered (ethanol-sterilized) drug solutions. Loss ofactivity byfiltration was overcome by increasing the drug concentration prior to filtration. Water solutions filtered through Millex-GSfilter units consistently showed an absorbance maximum at 277 nm, accompanied by a lesser peak at 225 nm. Water filtrates from Nucleopore and Millex-G Vfilters showed no absorbance at 277 nm and only slight absorbance was evidentfor the Gelmanfilter unit. Activity losses were attributed to extractable contaminating …
Cognitive Growth Through Expressive Writing All That Jazz, Christopher C. Burnham
Cognitive Growth Through Expressive Writing All That Jazz, Christopher C. Burnham
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
I want to develop jazz as a metaphor for growth. Jazz, generally considered, signals incongruity in music. Something happens where it was not originally to happen or where nothing was scheduled to happen-and nobody minds. In fact, the surprise-the incongruity-is the energy of jazz. In more formal terms, the creative impulse of the musician assumes power. He or she improvises between set notes, or in a void the composer leaves for such improvisational purposes. The musician is free to play, literally and figuratively. Each influences the other; they enlarge each other and expand potentialities.
