Contaminants In Oil Field Produced Waters Discharged Into The Loch Katrine Wetland Complex, Park County, Wyoming And Their Bioconcentration In The Aquatic Bird Food Chain, Pedro Ramirez Jr. Jan 1993

Contaminants In Oil Field Produced Waters Discharged Into The Loch Katrine Wetland Complex, Park County, Wyoming And Their Bioconcentration In The Aquatic Bird Food Chain, Pedro Ramirez Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The 866-acre Loch Katrine wetland complex in Park County, Wyoming provides habitat for many species of aquatic birds. However, the complex is sustained primarily by oil field produced waters. This study was designed to determine if constituents in oil field produced waters discharged into Loch Katrine pose a risk to aquatic birds inhabiting the wetlands. Trace elements, hydrocarbons and radium-226 concentrations were analyzed in water, sediment and biota collected from the complex during 1992. Boron and radium-226 were present in the produced water discharge and are bioaccumulating in the food chain. Although not present in acute concentrations, elevated boron in …

Water-Quality Assessment Of The Central Nebraska Basins: Summary Of Data For Recent Conditions Through 1990, Ronald B. Zelt, P. R. Jordan

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Among the first activities undertaken in each National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) investigation are the compilation, screening, and statistical summary of available data concerning recent water-quality conditions in the study unit. The water-quality conditions of interest in addressing the objectives of the NAWQA program are those that are representative of the general water quality of a given stream reach or area of an aquifer. This report (1) identifies which existing water-quality data are suitable for characterizing general conditions in a nationally consistent manner and (2) describes, to the extent possible, recent, general water-quality conditions in the Central Nebraska Basins. The study …

3. The Development Of Standards For Teacher Competence In Educational Assessment Of Students, James R. Sanders, Suzanne R. Vogel Jan 1993

3. The Development Of Standards For Teacher Competence In Educational Assessment Of Students, James R. Sanders, Suzanne R. Vogel

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

There has been a long history of concern about the quality of student assessments and their use by educators, and rightly so. Test scores, grades, informal measurements, and other forms of assessment typically have been weighted heavily in decisions about students, programs, and policies. Malpractice in student assessment can have detrimental and irreversible consequences affecting human lives and school programs. Assessment is defined here as the process of obtaining information that is used to make educational decisions about students; to give feedback to students about their progress, strengths, and weaknesses; to judge instructional effectiveness and curricular adequacy; and to inform …

G93-1158 Questions And Answers About Atrazine, Fred Roeth, S.D. Comfort Jan 1993

G93-1158 Questions And Answers About Atrazine, Fred Roeth, S.D. Comfort

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide addresses some of the current concerns about atrazine and water quality. Included are some questions and answers about atrazine regarding toxicity, EPA guidelines, presence in water supplies, weed resistance and best management practices. What is atrazine? Atrazine is a herbicide that selectively controls broadleaf (dicot) weeds, such as pigweed, cocklebur, velvetleaf and certain grass weeds in fields of corn and sorghum. Selective control means that the target weeds are controlled, with little or no injury to the crop. Atrazine is well tolerated by actively growing corn and sorghum, which absorb and metabolize the herbicide and thereby detoxify it.

G93-1147 Preventing Bacterial Contamination, Medication And Other Chemical Residues In Poultry Meat And Eggs, Eva Wallner-Pendleton, Norman Schneider, Susan Sumner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide deals with food safety in home broiler or table egg production flocks.

Food safety issues such as drug and pesticide residues and bacterial contamination have received a lot of attention from the media lately. While this attention has focused predominantly on practices by the large commercial livestock and poultry industries, procedures to assure food safety and quality should be practiced by home flock producers as well.

Rp93-395 Liability Insurance And The Family Child Care Provider Jan 1993

Rp93-395 Liability Insurance And The Family Child Care Provider

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Life other small business owners, family child care providers need adequate life, health, and disability insurance to protect their families from the loss of their income. However, child care providers also face unique risks. Perhaps the most important of these risks is the financial loss that would result if the provider were found liable or responsible for the injury or death of a child or a child's parent. If a claim were filed against you as a provider, three different types of financial losses are possible: medical expenses, damages awarded to the victim or his/her family after a lawsuit, and …

Chapter 1 The Enigma Of Drought, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1993

Chapter 1 The Enigma Of Drought, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought is the most complex and least understood of all natural hazards, affecting more people than any other hazard (Hagman, 1984). For the past several decades, we have been reminded again and again of the ravages of drought and the inability of most societies to effectively mitigate impacts in the short term and reduce vulnerability in the longer term. In fact, most scientists would agree that vulnerability to drought is increasing for a number of reasons, the most important of which may be the increasing pressure of an expanding population base on limited water and other natural resources.

5. Teachers' Assessment Of Students: Roles, Responsibilities And Purpose Believing Is Seeing, Donna Campbell Jan 1993

5. Teachers' Assessment Of Students: Roles, Responsibilities And Purpose Believing Is Seeing, Donna Campbell

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

Public education, and its assessment practices, have evolved from beliefs about how the world operates that are equivalent to the flat-earth theory. As long as the assessment of students is designed to fit obsolete "truths" about knowledge, learning, the mind, and human organizations, the roles and responsibilities of teachers in conducting such assessments, their purposes for doing so, and their preparation for fulfilling them will be likewise obsolete.

The following self-assessment (Figure 1) meets only one of fellow presenter H. D. Hoover's criteria for tests. It has not been checked for validity, reliability, objectivity, or fairness. It is, however, feasible. …

Two Alleles Of The 175-Kilodalton Plasmodium Falciparum Erythrocyte Binding Antigen, Lisa A. Ware, Kevin C. Kain, B. Kim Lee Sim, J. David Haynes, J. Kevin Baird, David E. Lanar Jan 1993

Two Alleles Of The 175-Kilodalton Plasmodium Falciparum Erythrocyte Binding Antigen, Lisa A. Ware, Kevin C. Kain, B. Kim Lee Sim, J. David Haynes, J. Kevin Baird, David E. Lanar

United States Public Health Resources

EHA-175, erythrocyte binding antigen 175, is a 175-kDa antigen of Plasmodium falciparum which has been shown to be involved in the recognition of erythrocytes by merozoites and may be involved in the process of erythrocyte invasion. Invasion of erythrocytes by Camp strain merozoites is inhibited by pre-treatment of red blood cells by EBA-175 from the heterologous strain, FCR-3. The sequence of the Camp strain has been published and we report here the sequence of the FCR-3 strain. The sequences are nearly identical except for a 423-bp segment in the FCR-3 strain, F-scgmcnt. that is not found in the Camp strain …

Exploiting Structural Differences Among Heteroduplex Molecules To Simplify Genotyping The Dqa1 And Dqb1 Alleles In Human Lymphocyte Typing, Peter A. Zimmerman, Mary Carrington, Thomas B. Nutman Jan 1993

Exploiting Structural Differences Among Heteroduplex Molecules To Simplify Genotyping The Dqa1 And Dqb1 Alleles In Human Lymphocyte Typing, Peter A. Zimmerman, Mary Carrington, Thomas B. Nutman

United States Public Health Resources

A novel approach to DNA probe hybridization and heteroduplex analysis, termed directed heteroduplex analysis (DHDA) is presented here to illustrate its utility in simplification of human lymphocyte antigen (HLA)- typing. By strategic labeling of single-stranded probe sequences, DHDA allows the identification of specific heteroduplex structures that contribute to the differentiation of DQAI and DQB1 alleles. Because of the high degree of polymorphism among major histocompatibility complex class 11 second exon sequences, this analysis of 50 different heteroduplex molecules provides evidence of the importance of unpaired bases and mismatched base pairs and their effect on heteroduplex electrophoretic-mobility differences. This strategy is …

Effect Of The General Anesthetic Halothane On The Activity Of The Transverse Tubule Ca2+-Activated K+ Channel, Troy Beeler, Kenneth Gable Jan 1993

Effect Of The General Anesthetic Halothane On The Activity Of The Transverse Tubule Ca2+-Activated K+ Channel, Troy Beeler, Kenneth Gable

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The effect of the general anesthetic halothane on the activity of the rat skeletal muscle Ca2+-activated K+ channel in planar lipid bilayers was investigated. Halothane concentrations in the clinical range (1.0-0.2 mM) alter the regulation of the channel by both Ca2+ and membrane potential. At Ca2+ concentrations between 10 and 250 µM and membrane potentials between 0 and -30 mV, halothane significantly decreases the open state probability without changing the channel conductance. The results demonstrate that halothane can act directly on the Ca2+-activated K+ channel or its lipid environment to alter the …

Increased Resolution And Improved Spectral Quality In Four-Dimensional 13C/13C-Separated Hmqc-Noesy-Hmqc Spectra Using Pulsed Field Gradients, Geerten W. Vuister, G. Marius Clore, Angela M. Gronenborn, Robert Powers, Daniel S. Garrett, Rolf Tschudin, Ad Bax

Robert Powers Publications

Pulsed field gradients ( PFG) make it possible to record two-- and three-dimensional spectra using experiments with only a single scan per increment (1-10) . In these experiments PFGs are employed to select the desired coherence-transfer pathway. However, each time a combination of PFGs is used to select a coherence transfer from order -n to m, a second desired pathway, from -n to m , is eliminated, resulting in an intrinsic sensitivity loss of a factor √2. Consequently, coherence pathway selection by means of PFGs is suitable only for applications where the signal-to-noise ratio is not a limiting factor. However, …

The Functional Analysis Of Nonsense Suppressors Derived From In Vitro Engineered Saccharomyces Cerevisiae TrnaTrp Genes, Audrey L. Atkin, M. A. Riazia, C. L. Greer, K. L. Roye, J. B. Bell Jan 1993

The Functional Analysis Of Nonsense Suppressors Derived From In Vitro Engineered Saccharomyces Cerevisiae TrnaTrp Genes, Audrey L. Atkin, M. A. Riazia, C. L. Greer, K. L. Roye, J. B. Bell

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Nonsense suppressors derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae tRNATrp genes have not been identified by classical genetic screens, although one can construct efficient amber (am) suppressors from them by making the appropriate anticodon mutation in vitro. Herein, a series of in vitro constructed putative suppressor genes was produced to test if pre-tRNATrp processing difficulties could help to explain the lack of classical tRNATrp-based suppressors. It is clear that inefficient processing of in-trons from precursor tRNATrp, or inaccurate overall processing, may explain why some of these constructs fail to promote nonsense suppression in vivo. However, deficient processing …

Chemical Tracing Techniques For Evaluating Rill Hydraulics, John E. Gilley, Eugene R. Kottwitz Jan 1993

Chemical Tracing Techniques For Evaluating Rill Hydraulics, John E. Gilley, Eugene R. Kottwitz

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Development of water erοsiοn and surface water quality control practices requires information concerning the hydraulic characteristics of upland areas. The relatively small flow rates normally found within rills make measurement of hydraulic parameters difficult. Chemical tracing procedures, originally developed for stream and river systems, have been successfully used to measure rill flow properties. A chemical tracer of known concentration is added to the rill and by knowing the degree of dilutiοn at a downstream sampling point, flow rate can be calculated. Rill flow velocity can be measured by determining the time required for a slug of tracer material to travel …

The Twenty-Second George Eliot Memorial Lecture: George Eliot In The Letters Of George Henry Lewes, William Baker

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

I am preparing an edition of the letters of G. H. Lewes.1 The edition is selective. It does not include those 722 G. H. Lewes items (letters, extracts from his journals and diaries) included in Gordon S. Haight's monumental The George Eliot Letters published in nine volumes by Yale University Press between 1954-55 and in 1978.2 My edition includes nearly 500 letters of which less than 50 have been previously published, making a just over 1,200 total of G. H. Lewes letters in print: a figure contrasting with upwards of 3,500 George Eliot letters in Haight's edition, less than 2,000 …

Review Of Romola, Andrew Brown Jan 1993

Review Of Romola, Andrew Brown

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

George Eliot wrote of Romola in 1877 that she 'could swear by every sentence as having been written with my best blood.' Romola was the only historical novel she ever wrote, and the editor of the Clarendon edition, Andrew Brown, describes it as 'the least accessible of her works of fiction' as far as the general reader is concerned. It is what he calls 'a formidably learned book', and his superb introduction traces the formidable amount of research George Eliot undertook for it. He indicates the anguish involved in its writing, its initial critical reception and the number of editions …

The Farm Policy Debate Of 1949-50: Plains State Reaction To The Brannan Plan, Virgil W. Dean Jan 1993

The Farm Policy Debate Of 1949-50: Plains State Reaction To The Brannan Plan, Virgil W. Dean

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

A storm of controversy arose in April 1949 when Secretary of Agriculture Charles F. Brannan unveiled the Truman administration's postwar policy for agriculture. The most controversial aspect of the so-called Brannan plan was its production payments feature, a direct, undisguised farm subsidy designed to bring relief to producers and consumers alike. Other aspects of the complex plan also elicited both praise and blame, but disagreements during this fractious time were not limited to farm questions. In a year of apparent victories for the world's communist monolith, spy trials, and labor unrest, discussions of farm policy on the Great Plains and …

Nebraska Law Review

Hope v. Perales is one of the latest abortion decisions in a line of cases in which state courts have expansively interpreted their state constitutions to broaden their citizens' right of privacy beyond what is federally mandated. This Note analyzes the significance of the Hope V. Perales court's holding and the possible value of its reasoning if applied in a Nebraska court faced with the question of the constitutionality of the current Medicaid program that only funds abortions when the life of the mother is endangered. First, the Hope decision will be outlined. Second, the federal law in this area …
