Cluster Analysis Of The Coprolites From Antelope House: Implications For Anasazi Diet And Cuisine, Mark Q. Sutton, Karl Reinhard Jan 1995

Cluster Analysis Of The Coprolites From Antelope House: Implications For Anasazi Diet And Cuisine, Mark Q. Sutton, Karl Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

This paper reports on a cluster analysis of 155 coprolites from Antelope House, a prehistoric Anasazi site in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. The analysis revealed three primary clusters; whole kernel maize, milled maize, and nonmaize, which we believe to represent seasonal- and preference-related cuisine. Protein residue analysis on a subsample of the specimens added depth to the analysis.

Principles And History Of Turfgrass Pest Management, Frederick P. Baxendale, Jennifer A. Grant Jan 1995

Principles And History Of Turfgrass Pest Management, Frederick P. Baxendale, Jennifer A. Grant

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The importance of developing efficient and environmentally sound methods for managing turf grass pests has been reemphasized by recent concerns over environmental safety, the loss of long-term residual insecticides, and a growing awareness of the problems associated with the overuse of pesticides. Integrated pest management (IPM) addresses these concerns while maintaining the aesthetic and utilitarian qualities of the turf IPM is an approach that utilizes all suitable methods and techniques in a compatible manner to maintain pest densities below levels causing unacceptable damage. Although insects and mites are discussed in this handbook, the same management principles apply to other turf …

Global Regulation Of A Σ54-Dependent Flagellar Gene Family In Caulobacter Crescentus By The Transcriptional Activator Flbd, Jianguo Wu, Andrew K. Benson, Austin Newton Jan 1995

Global Regulation Of A Σ54-Dependent Flagellar Gene Family In Caulobacter Crescentus By The Transcriptional Activator Flbd, Jianguo Wu, Andrew K. Benson, Austin Newton

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Biosynthesis of the Caulobacter crescentus polar flagellum requires the expression of a large number of flagellar (fla) genes that are organized in a regulatory hierarchy of four classes (I to IV). The timing of fla gene expression in the cell cycle is determined by specialized forms of RNA polymerase and the appearance and/or activation of regulatory proteins. Here we report an investigation of the role of the C. crescentus transcriptional regulatory protein FlbD in the activation of σ54-dependent class III and class IV fla genes of the hierarchy by reconstituting transcription from these promoters in vitro. …

Classical And Molecular Approaches To Breeding Horticultural Plants For Disease Resistance: Introduction To The Colloquium, Dermot P. Coyne Jan 1995

Classical And Molecular Approaches To Breeding Horticultural Plants For Disease Resistance: Introduction To The Colloquium, Dermot P. Coyne

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Diseases of horticultural crops have always been a concern of crop producers, processors, merchandisers, and consumers because of reductions in yield and product quality. Excessive chemical application to control diseases of some crops has been a health concern in some countries. Some diseases pose a major constraint, or even a threat, to the production of a crop in a region. Plant breeders, in association with plant pathologists, have had notable successes in breeding disease-resistant varieties, thus ensuring the economic production of a crop. There is now an increased need to breed for disease resistance of horticultural crops because of a …

Feeding Responses To Predator-Based Repellents In The Mountain Beaver (Aplodontia Rufa), Gisela Epple, J. Russell Mason, Evgueny Aronov, Dale L. Nolte, Richard Hartz, Ron Kaloostian, Dan Campbell, Amos Smith Iii Jan 1995

Feeding Responses To Predator-Based Repellents In The Mountain Beaver (Aplodontia Rufa), Gisela Epple, J. Russell Mason, Evgueny Aronov, Dale L. Nolte, Richard Hartz, Ron Kaloostian, Dan Campbell, Amos Smith Iii

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Predator odors have potential as feeding repellents for mammalian herbivores, including Aplodontia rufa, the mountain beaver. However, the repellency of major chemical constituents of natural predator scents for this species has not been evaluated. In this study, the effects of several synthetic sulfur compounds from predator scents on feeding by mountain beavers were assessed and compared to the effects of coyote (Canis latrans) urine. Retrieval of food by mountain beavers from bowls scented with either coyote urine, diluted with water to different concentrations, synthetic components of predator scents, or control odorants was studied. The following synthetic compounds …

Birds Associated With Blackbird Spring Feeding Sites In South Dakota, George M. Linz, David L. Bergman, William J. Bleier Jan 1995

Birds Associated With Blackbird Spring Feeding Sites In South Dakota, George M. Linz, David L. Bergman, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

From 2 to 16 April 1993, we conducted road-side surveys of birds using harvested fields of small grains, soybeans, and wm within 8 km of two blackbird roosts in east central South Dakota. Blackbirds, waterfowl, killdeer, homed larks, ring-necked pheasants, and western meadowlarks were the most common buds recorded. The frequencies of blackbirds, non-game birds, terrestrial game birds, and waterfowl was not equally distributed within the three habitats (P = 0.U.23).

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of 17β-estradiol (E2) on distribution of LH and FSH isoforms during the follicular phase of the bovine estrous cycle prior to the preovulatory surges of LH and FSH. On Day 16 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus), intact controls (CONT; n = 4) were treated with prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) to induce luteal regression and initiation of the follicular phase. Other cows were also treated with PGF2α and either ovariectomized (OVX; n = 5) or ovariectomized and given E2 implants (OVXE; n …

Age-Related Resistance To 987p Fimbria-Mediated Colonization Correlates With Specific Glycolipid Receptors In Intestinal Mucus In Swine, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, James E. Samuel Nov 1994

Age-Related Resistance To 987p Fimbria-Mediated Colonization Correlates With Specific Glycolipid Receptors In Intestinal Mucus In Swine, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, James E. Samuel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli that produce 987P fimbriae (987P+ strains) colonize the small intestines and cause diarrhea in neonatal (<6-day-old) pigs but not in weaned pigs. However, 987P+ E. coli strains adhere in vitro to intestinal epithelial cells from pigs of both ages. Two intestinal components, designated 987R and 987M, bind 987P fimbriae (987P) on Western blots (immunoblots). We examined brush borders (BB) and intestinal washes (IW) from pigs to determine if they contain glycolipids which bind 987P. Total glycolipid extracts from BB and IW of 4-week-old pigs were separated on thin-layer chromatograms and overlaid with purified 987P. Bound 987P were detected with 987P-specific antiserum. …

A Study Of Euplotes Crassus Telomere Proteins And Related Genes, John Scott Perez Nov 1994

A Study Of Euplotes Crassus Telomere Proteins And Related Genes, John Scott Perez

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A novel PCR technique used to amplify Euplotes crassus macronuclear chromosomes was developed to provide scientific proof that an Euplotes crassus 1.0 kb gene is not genetically related to an Oxytricha nova 1.8 kb β-telomere protein gene. Theories and experimental procedures associated with the development of this PCR technique were the product of research that will have a profound impact on future studies of telomere protein genes and telomeric DNA in a multitude of eukaryotic cells. The hypothesis that a β-telomere protein does not exist in Euplotes crassus was supported by the result of this study.

Expression of the recombinant …

Factors Affecting Rats' Location During Conditioned Suppression Training, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres Oct 1994

Factors Affecting Rats' Location During Conditioned Suppression Training, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

If freezing underlies barpress conditioned suppression, then it seems odd that auditory cues paired with shock evoke more freezing than do visual cues, yet evoke similar suppression. Bevins and Ayres (1992) found that auditory and visual cues also evoked similar withdrawal from the bar and dipper areas and suggested that such withdrawal could explain the similar suppression. Seeking to understand that withdrawal, we found evidence in the present study that it was due either to adventitious punishment or to place-aversion learning. The cue for shock seemed to set the occasion for such learning. For example, we found that, as training …

Review Of Monic Robillard, Le Désir De La Vierge: Hérodiade Chez Mallarmé, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1994

Review Of Monic Robillard, Le Désir De La Vierge: Hérodiade Chez Mallarmé, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

With this insightful though sometimes difficult book Monic Robillard has gone well beyond his earlier work on Stéphane Mallarmé's Hérodiade to offer a reading of the 30-year project where psychoanalytic paradigms and close reading create a lively and suggestive network that moves to the center of Mallarmé's poetics.
