Review Of Earth And Sky: Visions Of The Cosmos In Native American Folklore Edited By Ray A. Williamson And Claire E. Farrer, Lee Irwin
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This is a book for a wider audience than folklorists or anthropologists, though both will find substantive materials here for future research. It is a work that integrates a number of disciplinary perspectives-including ethnohistorical sources, archaeology, social theory, myth studies, religion and ritual, and astronomy- with remarkable economy and focus. The editors, Ray Williamson (from the United States Congress's Office of Technological Assessment) and Claire Farrer (an anthropologist at California State University at Chico), have illustrated the depth and complexities of Native American "Blue Archaeoastronomy" as a source for enhancing our understanding of diverse mythic worlds. The volume's essays range …

Faculty Development And Changing Environments Of The Urban Campus, Debrah Jefferson, Susan Peverly
Faculty Development And Changing Environments Of The Urban Campus, Debrah Jefferson, Susan Peverly
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Literature about the urban campus indicates that traditional, full-time faculty who teach and engage in scholarly, creative work, or research may need to shift to more applied and community-oriented service programs. Hence, the role of faculty development is changing because the issues facing the urban university are changing. These changes are prompted by the unique growth and development within the neighborhood of urban-based campuses. Pressure from the communities to make the campuses more community oriented, along with growing concern for the nature and quality of instruction, help foster change. Campus administration concerns about the institution becoming a "good" neighbor by …

Improving Students' Critical Thinking Outcomes: An Process-Learning Strategy In Eight Steps, S. Kay A. Thornhill, Melissa Wafer
Improving Students' Critical Thinking Outcomes: An Process-Learning Strategy In Eight Steps, S. Kay A. Thornhill, Melissa Wafer
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
This article describes an eight-step strategy through which students learn to critically analyze situations that they have encountered in their clinical practice. The method was derived from Stephen Brookfield's four components of critical thinking and his suggestions for themes that relate to nursing culturalization. The approach used to develop this model has implications for educators in all fields because it illustrates a method for integrating the learning of critical thinking processes with their real-world applications.
Surveillance Of Life Insurer Solvency: A Comparison Of Stock And The Multiple Scenario Cash Flow Financial Stress Tests, Ronald W. Spahr, Paul L. Gronewoller
Surveillance Of Life Insurer Solvency: A Comparison Of Stock And The Multiple Scenario Cash Flow Financial Stress Tests, Ronald W. Spahr, Paul L. Gronewoller
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
The solvency of life insurance companies may be threatened by interest rate risk when the maturities of assets and liabilities are mismatched. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) multiple scenario cashflow test (MSCFT) and the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) net portfolio value model (stock) approaches to financial stress tests are illustrated and analyzed with respect to their capacity to estimate the impact of potential changes in interest rates on life insurance company capital and surplus. Each approach is illustrated with the assets and liabilities of three hypothetical life insurance company capital levels (high, average, and below average) and …
A Pension Plan Incorporating Both Defined Benefit And Defined Contribution Principles, Zaki M. Khorasanee
A Pension Plan Incorporating Both Defined Benefit And Defined Contribution Principles, Zaki M. Khorasanee
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
We propose a defined contribution pension plan with an explicitly defined benefit formula. Such a plan is expected to pay more stable and predictable benefits over time than one based on the money purchase principle. The properties of the plan are investigated through simulation. Methods for distributing surpluses and eliminating deficiencies that involve adjusting the rate of benefit accrual (rather than varying the rate of contribution) are discussed. The behavior of the plan under a scenario of persistently unfavorable investment experience is Simulated, and methods for satisfactorily dealing with such a scenario are considered. The plan actuary is expected to …

Discussion Of Robert L. Brown's "Recent Canadian Human Rights Decisions Having An Impact On Gender-Based Risk Classification Systems", Patrick Butler
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
This commentary examines the political and economic influence of demographic groups on rationales for granting exemption from laws prohibiting classification by age or sex, as evidenced in the cases discussed by Robert L. Brown. Age is less subject than sex to manipulation for group advantage. In Professor Brown's discussion of auto insurance cases, only the influence of group dominance can explain:
• Selective focus on young drivers;
• Indifference to ongoing overcharging of adult women signaled by undisputed 2:1 ratios of cost-related averages; and
• Avoidance of effective ways to evaluate miles of exposure to risk.
Contrary to Professor Brown's …

Media Components Influence Viral Gene Expression Assays In Human Fetal Astrocyte Cultures, Micheline Mccarthy, Charles Wood, Larisa Fedoseyeva, Scott R. Whittemore
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
In vitro neurovirological studies of viral infectivity or viral gene expression may be confounded by the mulHple neural cell types and/or fibrob last contamination present in early passage cultures prepared from dissociated human central nervous system (eNS) tissue. We have developed highly enriched astrocyte cultures for neurovirological study by culturing in a serum-free defined medium, 816, supplemented with basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2). Subculture in this medium selects against fibroblast proliferation and favors sustained proliferation of a highly enriched glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cell population. These astrocytes support productive replication of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and transient expression of transfected CMVand …

Aboriginal Adaptations On The Colorado Plateau: A View From The Island-In-The-Sky, Canyonlands National Park, Utah, Alan J. Osborn, Jesslyn Brown, Galen Burgett, Linda Scott Cummings, Ralph J. Hartley, Susan Vetter, Jennifer Waters, Tony Zalucha
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
This final report documents the results of archaeological inventory, excavation, and analysis of prehistoric cultural resources within a 45-kilometer (28-mile) long corridor in the Island-in-the-Sky District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. During three field seasons of survey, mapping, and excavation in 1983-1985, the research team recorded 32 artifact scatters, plotted 90,000 prehistoric artifacts and 250 historic items, completed 600 one-square-meter test pits, and conducted 10 block excavations. Block excavations at two locations in Gray's Pasture revealed a plant processing/hunting field camp (42SA16858) and a disturbed pithouse (42SA8506). Associated features and materials included a puddled clay-lined hearth, a slab-lined pit, a …

Melengestrol Acetate At Greater Doses Than Typically Used For Estrous Synchrony In Bovine Females Does Not Mimic Endogenous Progesterone In Regulation Of Secretion Of Luteinizing Hormone And 17Β-Estradiol, F. N. Kojima, J. R. Chenault, M. E. Wehrman, E. G. M. Bergfeld, Andrea S. Cupp, L. A. Werth, V. Mariscal, T. Sanchez, Roger J. Kittok, J. E. Kinder
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Our working hypothesis was that doses of melengestrol acetate (MGA) greater than those typically administered in estrous synchrony regimens would regulate secretion of LH and 17β-estradiol (E2) as endogenous progesterone (P4) does during the midluteal phase of the estrous cycle. We also hypothesized that endogenous P4 from the CL would interact with MGA to further decrease the frequency of LH pulses and E2. Cows on Day 5 of their estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus) were randomly assigned to an untreated control group (CONT, n = 5) or to one of six MGA …
G95-1248 Healthful Snacks For Children Two To Five Years Of Age, H. Darlene Martin
G95-1248 Healthful Snacks For Children Two To Five Years Of Age, H. Darlene Martin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This guide discusses the benefits of providing snacks to young children and shares ideas for what good snacks are for these children.
Why do children two to five years of age need snacks?
Snacks are an important part of children's daily food intake. It is difficult for children to get all the nutrients they need to promote growth and development in three meals a day. Also, most children need snacks because they get hungry between meals. Well-chosen snacks can help supply nutrients and energy needs (calories).
As a parent you may say, "My children do not need any more calories, …

G95-1236 Developing Beef Quality Assurance, Dicky D. Griffin, Louis Perino, Don Hudson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This Neb-Guide gives guidelines for developing a feedlot beef quality assurance program.
The displacement of people from agriculture into other areas of employment has broken the relationship between most consumers and producers. The consumer's lack of knowledge about agricultural production coupled with concern for misuse of technological advances in agriculture has created great concern for the safety of their food supply. Consumers are worried that their food will be contaminated by antibiotics, hormones, and agricultural chemicals. Recently, bacterial contamination of beef has been added to their fears. These concerns, combined with diet and health concerns for eating red meat and …

G95-1259 Wildlife And Disease--Public Health Concerns, Dallas Virchow, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Wayne L. Kramer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes human health risks and symptoms associated with prominent diseases of Nebraska's wildlife. Listed are precautions for minimizing exposure and preventing infection.
Zoonoses (zoe-uh'-no-sez') are diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Wild animals and domestic animals share some disease-causing organisms and either group can transmit diseases to people. Transmission can occur directly through contact with tissues or body fluids of animals. Indirect transmission can occur through insects, ticks and mites that feed on infected animals.

Ec95-1873 Cultural Practices That Influence Wheat Diseases, John E. Watkins, Robert N. Klein, Paul C. Hay, Lenis Alton Nelson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The health of a wheatcrop is determined well before the crop is planted. It is often the result of subtle factors in the management history of the field, including varieties, seed quality, seedbed, planting date, residue management and post harvest weed control. Wheat health management practices before the crop is planted must limit, as much as possible, the number of production hazards that must be dealt with after planting. Important diseases influenced by cultural practices include crown and root rot, wheat streak mosaic, soil-borne wheat mosaic, barley yellow dwarf, leaf rust, smut diseases, scab, Cephalosporium stripe and tan spot.

Placing The Places In Wordsworth's 1802 Sonnets, Stephen C. Behrendt
Placing The Places In Wordsworth's 1802 Sonnets, Stephen C. Behrendt
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Wordsworth's political sonnets of summer and fall 1802 recount the sights and sounds the poet encountered during the brief respite provided by the Peace of Amiens, which enabled him to return to France and to the woman and child who were the physical reminders of the time he had spent there ten years earlier in the spirited days following the French Revolution. Published together in 1807 in Poems, in Two Volumes, they juxtapose the dispirited and pathetic state of France in 1802 with the ebullience Wordsworth recalled from that earlier time. More important, the sequence documents his "return" to England, …

G1253 Basic Principles Of Mastitis Control, Jeffrey F. Keown, Paul J. Kononoff
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Mastitis is a frustrating, costly, and complex infection. A good, workable, effective preventive control program is presented in this NebGuide.
Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland usually caused by bacterial infection of udder tissues. Except for rare injuries, infectious bacteria or other pathogens, e.g. yeast, fungi, etc., enter the udder through the teat end. Mastitis in both clinical (obvious abnormality, visible to naked eye) and subclinical stages (unseen signs of abnormality, invisible to naked eye) is a frustrating, costly and complex disease that reduces the quality and quantity of milk.
Mastitis results from a complex interrelationship between the …
