Water Power Development On The Lower Loup River: A Study In Economic Geography, Ralph Eugene Olson Jun 1937

Water Power Development On The Lower Loup River: A Study In Economic Geography, Ralph Eugene Olson

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

It is the major purpose of this paper to describe the Loup River Public Power District Project, to show how it is limited by and adapted to the natural and cultural environment and to suggest some of the economic and social effects on the local region. Brief consideration is given to the relation of this project to the broader social and economic program of a wise development of natural resources. Prior to this study, no systematic description and interpretation of the Loup Project has been attempted so far as the writer has been able to discover. Aside from the preliminary …

The Geology And Mammalian Fauna Of The Pleistocene Of Nebraska Part I Outline Of Pleistocene Geology Of Nebraska Part Ii The Pleistocene Mammals Of Nebraska, A. L. Lugn, C. Bertrand Schultz Jan 1934

The Geology And Mammalian Fauna Of The Pleistocene Of Nebraska Part I Outline Of Pleistocene Geology Of Nebraska Part Ii The Pleistocene Mammals Of Nebraska, A. L. Lugn, C. Bertrand Schultz

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The object of the present paper is to provide a suitable brief statement of the present state of knowledge of the Pleistocene geology of Nebraska, for an adequate understanding of the Pleistocene Mammal list, by Mr. C. Bertrand Schultz, which forms Part II of this report. The "outline" is necessarily brief and does not contain many detailed sections, nor lengthy discussions of controversial points. It is lacking in adequate detailed descriptions of new formations and may not be entirely convincing to many readers. The only excuse which the writer can offer for the shortcomings of the following pages is the …

The English Traveller And The Movement Of Ideas 1660-1732, R. W. Frantz Jan 1933

The English Traveller And The Movement Of Ideas 1660-1732, R. W. Frantz

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

During the span of years reaching from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth centuries, related forces persisted which gave to the voyage-literature of that day a distinctive pattern, both in thought and in form. Between 1660 and 1732 other forces began to act; and the result was an altered pattern. This change was due principally to the impetus which experimental science received during !the last half of the seventeenth century. The age which saw the rise of the Royal Society, the publication of Newton's Principia and Locke's Essay, the age, in other words, which conceived the world of nature and of …

The Scottsbluff Bison Quarry And Its Artifacts, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, C. Bertrand Schultz Jan 1932

The Scottsbluff Bison Quarry And Its Artifacts, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, C. Bertrand Schultz

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The association of artifacts with extinct bison bones in a quarry near Grand Island, Hall County Nebraska,1 and from one in Custer County, Nebraska, have already been reported.2 In the meantime, continued search has been rewarded, and a large bed of fossil bison with associated flint implements found. The discovery, if not of actual consequence, at least adds something to the accumulating evidence that Pleistocene man in America may have been a reality.

Rb30-244 Types Of Farming In Nebraska, Harold Hedges, F.E. Elliott Jan 1930

Rb30-244 Types Of Farming In Nebraska, Harold Hedges, F.E. Elliott

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

"Type of farming" as used in this bulletin is a term descriptive of a group of farms similar in size and enterprise combination. Thus a group of farms having the same kind, quantity, and proportion of crops oand livestock may be said to be following the same type of farming. The term "type-of-farming area" refers to an area within which there is a high degree of uniformity in the type of farming practicse and in the physical and economic conditions under which production takes place. This should not be understood to mean that there is absolute uniformity either in farming …

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

Nebraska Facts, compiled by Walter Kollmorgen in the 1930s for the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska, presents a concise statistical and descriptive overview of the state of Nebraska during the early twentieth century. The publication synthesizes data on Nebraska’s geography, climate, natural resources, agriculture, industry, transportation infrastructure, public health, and education. Emphasis is placed on the state’s agricultural productivity, manufacturing capacity, and favorable economic indicators, reflecting Nebraska’s role as a leading contributor to national food production and livestock markets during this period. The work also highlights public institutions, including the capitol building and the University …

"Triassic-Jurassic 'Red Beds' Of The Rocky Mountain Region": A Discussion, John B. Reeside Jr. Jan 1929

"Triassic-Jurassic 'Red Beds' Of The Rocky Mountain Region": A Discussion, John B. Reeside Jr.

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The conclusion drawn by Professor E. B. Branson in a recent paper on the "Red Beds" of the Rocky Mountain region that parts of these beds are marine is considered likely. The conclusion that there exists no basis for subdivision of the beds is not accepted, and a division of the Mesozoic part into Lower Triassic, Upper Triassic, and Jurassic units is advocated. The conclusion that no eolian deposits are present likewise is not accepted, and the interpretation of important parts of the Jurassic unit as eolian is advocated. Disagreement is expressed with much of Professor Branson's correlation table, and …

Wild Birds Introduced Or Transplanted In North America, John C. Phillips Jan 1928

Wild Birds Introduced Or Transplanted In North America, John C. Phillips

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The early history of the introduction of foreign birds into this country is mostly clothed in darkness. The records of many attempts, if such there were, have long since been buried in back numbers of local newspapers, and if any experiment was unsuccessful it was soon forgotten. Hence, one trying to get an accurate idea of what has happened soon realizes that he is following a hopeless quest. It is much the same with the transplanting of native birds, especially game birds, which have been carried about all over the country from west to east and from east to west …

The Natural Vegetation Of Ohio Ii. The Prairies, Paul B. Sears May 1926

The Natural Vegetation Of Ohio Ii. The Prairies, Paul B. Sears

Papers in Ecology

It is well known that many treeless areas existed in Ohio before white settlement. These areas, of various ecological character and usually restricted in size, were in a few cases fairly extensive—embracing from fifty to one hundred square miles. The term "prairie" was rather generally applied to them, although more exact terms were not wanting. Like the various forest associations, these treeless areas have played an important role in influencing industrial and cultural phases of human life in Ohio (1). The present paper is an attempt to reconstruct such areas, now destroyed or obscured by secondary successions induced by white …

Directory Of Certain Alumni The Department Of Geology And Geography The University Of Nebraska, E. F. Schramm

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

In the Department of Geology and Geography, The University of Nebraska, there have been over 10,000 registrants between the years 1891 and 1926. So many inquiries have been received concerning alumni and their addresses that it seems advisable to publish this directory. The list is necessarily incomplete since many of the alumni have not informed the Department respecting their addresses and change of positions. Out of the total number of those who have pursued professional vocations the following have kept in close touch with the Department.

Chapter Two: The Founding Of The University, Robert Crawford

These Fifty Years: A History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska

A HISTORY of the Agricultural College of Nebraska is also a history of the University of Nebraska. From the earliest years to the present day the two have been inseparably connected. The Agricultural College was established as one of the colleges of the University, later, in 1877, being incorporated in the Industrial College, and still later, in 1909, again becoming a separate college of the University, the College of Agriculture.

The University and Agricultural College received their endowment from two sources. The Enabling Act of 1864, providing for the state's admission into the Union, declared that seventy-two sections) (46,080 acres) …

Chapter Three: Establishment Of The Agricultural College, Robert Crawford

These Fifty Years: A History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE

IT IS here that we draw the dividing line and proceed with the history of the Agricultural College rather than that of the University. Having seen the University established with its integral college units, it is now fitting to devote our attention primarily to the College of Agriculture, with only such references to the University as occasion demands.

It will be recalled that one of the primary purposes of the Land Grant Act of -1862 was to offer industrial education to the people, or as the Act stated, "to teach such branches of learning as …

Chapter Four: The Industrial College And The Experiment Station, Robert Crawford

These Fifty Years: A History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska

THE fifteen-year period from about 1875 to 1890 was marked by at least three important developments in the history of the College of Agriculture. One was the changing of the name of the Agricultural College to that of Industrial College and the consequent development of an engineering department within the Industrial College, as well as the reorganization of the work of the college. The second was the founding of the Agricultural Experiment Station with government funds supplied under the Hatch Act. The third important development was the erection of Nebraska Hall, a building to house the Industrial College, on the …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

It seems especially appropriate at this time to publish a history of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska. The year 1922 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the formal establishment of the college by the Board of Regents, while the year 1924 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the enrollment of the first students in agricultural subjects. It is hoped and intended that this little volume shall preserve for the future much valuable material that would otherwise soon be forgotten.

A Study Of The Vegetation Of Northeastern Arizona, Herbert Christian Hanson Jan 1924

A Study Of The Vegetation Of Northeastern Arizona, Herbert Christian Hanson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The State of Arizona is marked by a great series of cliffs that extend from the mouth of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in the northwestern part of the state southeastward into New Mexico. This line of cliffs, rising 1000 to 4000 feet above the desert plains forms the southwestern and southern boundary of the great physiographic province called the Colorado Plateaus. It is roughly circular and includes northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, western Colorado, and a large part of Utah. This province is subdivided by a number of deep canyons and high cliffs into numerous plateaus. The …

A Preliminary Report On The Nebraska State Museum, Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The Nebraska State Museum has been established a sufficient number of years to make it widely known throughout the state, both by reputation and by personal visits. Incident to a growing clientele and an expanding correspondence, it is expedient that a concise circular letter be issued in bulletin form. Such a pamphlet can be promptly forwarded to inquirers and will offer obvious advantages over individual replies.

An Eighth Grade Review Book, G. C. Cook

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Formerly having taught a District School for two years I realize the need in County Schools of some kind of an Eighth Grade Review book.

The purpose of this book is to aid the teacher in reviewing the pupil and also to furnish a source by which the pupil can review himself. This book is not to be used as a regular text throughout the year, but to be used for review during the month preceding eight grade examinations.

The material herein is written in the simpIest language in order that it may be understandable to every eighth grade pupil. …

A Provisional List Of Nebraska Authors, Sophia J. Lammers

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This list of Nebraska authors has been prepared to answer the many demands for such information that have come to this library. The frequency with which this reference inquiry appears, not only in our library but elsewhere, is shown from the fact that manuscript lists of Nebraska authors have been compiled in the Lincoln City Library, the State Library, the Library Commission, the State Historical Society, and the Legislative Reference Bureau. This material has been placed freely at the disposal of the compiler of the present list. Many individuals have also been consulted and have contributed information of value. The …
