A Phylogenetic Hypothesis For Species Of The Genus Taenia (Eucestoda: Taeniidae), Eric P. Hoberg, Arlene Jones, Robert L. Rausch, Keeseon S. Eom, Scott Lyell Gardner Feb 2000

A Phylogenetic Hypothesis For Species Of The Genus Taenia (Eucestoda: Taeniidae), Eric P. Hoberg, Arlene Jones, Robert L. Rausch, Keeseon S. Eom, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cladistic analysis of a numerical data matrix describing 27 characters for species of Taenia resulted in four most parsimonious phylogenetic trees (174 steps; consistency index = 0.28; homoplasy index = 0.72; retention index = 0.48). Monophyly for Taenia is diagnosed by the metacestode that is either a cysticercus or a form derived from a bladder-like larva; no other unequivocal synapomorphies are evident. Tree structure provides no support for recognition of a diversity of tribes or genera within the Taeniinae: Fimbriotaeniini and Taeniini have no phylogenetic basis. Hydatigera, Fimbriotaenia, Fossor, Monordotaenia, Multiceps, Taeniarhynchus, Tetratirotaenia must …

Integrated Management Tactics For Predicting And Alleviating Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Spp.) Damage To Conifer Reforestation Plantings, Richard M. Engeman, Gary W. Witmer Jan 2000

Integrated Management Tactics For Predicting And Alleviating Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Spp.) Damage To Conifer Reforestation Plantings, Richard M. Engeman, Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Pocket gophers cause extensive damage to reforestation plantings in the western United States, and pose acute and chronic problems for forest managers. We examine the components of an integrated pest management strategy for reducing pocket gopher damage to conifers: the predictive factors for assessing the risk for damage, techniques for monitoring gopher populations and assessing efficacy of control methods, and damage control strategies and methods. The information in each component is reviewed and presented so that an optimal damage reduction plan can be developed in a logical, cost-effective, environmentally responsible fashion.

Review Of Into The West The Story Of Its People, By Walter Nugent, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 2000

Review Of Into The West The Story Of Its People, By Walter Nugent, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

This latest book by Walter Nugent, a distinguished and prolific American historian, is a major contribution to western history. Into the West is about people--those who came to the West, when, and why--more than about place. Though "not driven by any thesis," it rests on a foundation of sociodemography, not geography (p. xix). On his way into the West, Nugent focuses on population movements and the ideas that propelled them.

Potential Production And Environmental Effects Of Switchgrass And Traditional Crops Under Current And Greenhouse-Altered Climate In The Central United States: A Simulation Study, R.A. Brown, N.J. Rosenberg, Cynthia J. Hays, W.E. Easterling, L.O. Mearns Jan 2000

Mearns

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

If, as many climate change analysts _ speculate, industrial and other emissions of CO2 can be offset by substitution of biofuels, large areas of land, including agricultural land, may be converted to the production of biomass feedstocks. This paper explores the feasibility for the Missouri–Iowa–Nebraska–Kansas (MINK) region of the US of converting some agricultural land to the production of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), a perennial warm season grass, as a biomass energy crop. The erosion productivity impact calculator (EPIC) crop growth model simulated production of corn (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), soybean ( …

2. Assessing Metacognition And Self-Regulated Learning, Paul R. Pintrich, Christopher A. Wolters, Gail P. Baxter

Issues in the Measurement of Metacognition

In this chapter we provide an overview of the conceptual and methodological issues involved in developing and evaluating measures of metacognition and self-regulated learning. Our goal is to suggest a general framework for thinking about these assessments- a framework that will help generate questions and guide future research and development efforts. Broadly speaking, we see the main issue in assessing metacognition and self-regulated learning as one of construct validity. Of critical importance are the conceptual or theoretical definitions of these constructs and the adequacy of the empirical evidence offered to justify or support interpretations of test scores obtained from instruments …

Chapter topics include fire regime classification, autecological effects of fire, fire regime characteristics and postfire plant community developments in ecosystems throughout the United States and Canada, global climate change, ecological principles of fire regimes, and practical considerations for managing fire in an ecosytem context.

Use Of The Generalized Integral Transform Method For Solving Equations Of Solute Transport In Porous Media, Chongxuan Liu, Jim E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, William P. Ball Jan 2000

Use Of The Generalized Integral Transform Method For Solving Equations Of Solute Transport In Porous Media, Chongxuan Liu, Jim E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, William P. Ball

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The generalized integral transform technique (GITT) is applied to solve the one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) in heterogeneous porous media coupled with either linear or nonlinear sorption and decay. When both sorption and decay are linear, analytical solutions are obtained using the GITT for one-dimensional ADEs with spatially and temporally variable flow and dispersion coefficient and arbitrary initial and boundary conditions. When either sorption or decay is nonlinear the solutions to ADEs with the GITT are hybrid analytical-numerical. In both linear and nonlinear cases, the forward and inverse integral transforms for the problems described in the paper are apparent and straightforward. …

Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger Jan 2000

Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A review of the recent literature and research in progress on bird collisions with
communication towers was contracted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the five year period 1995 through 1999, very little research was published or conducted that is relevant to the bird-communication tower collision problem. It seems that since the major reviews of the late 1970s and early 1980s, few researchers and others have been interested in researching the problem. Before 1985, there was an enormous body of literature, mostly anecdotal that has not been examined analytically.

For the current review,, a standard literature search …

Water Quality In The Sacramento River Basin, California,1994–98, Joseph L. Domagalski, Donna L. Knifong, Peter D. Dileanis, Larry R. Brown, Jason T. May, Valerie Connor, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Publications

This report summarizes major findings about water quality in the Sacramento River Basin that emerged from an assessment conducted between 1994 and 1998 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. Water quality is discussed in terms of local and regional issues and compared to conditions found in all 36 NAWQA study areas, called Study Units, assessed to date. Findings are also explained in the context of selected national benchmarks, such as those for drinking-water quality and the protection of aquatic organisms. The NAWQA Program was not intended to assess the quality of the Nation's drinking water, …

Paleoclimate Reconstruction Along The Pole-Equator-Pole Transect Of The Americas (Pep 1), Vera Markgraf, T.R Baumgartner, J. P. Bradbury, H. F. Diaz, R. B. Dunbar, B. H. Luckman, G. O. Seltzer, T. W. Swetnam, R. Villalba

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Examples are presented of inter-hemispheric comparison of instrumental climate and paleoclimate proxy records from the Americas for different temporal scales. Despite a certain symmetry of seasonal precipitation patterns along the PEP 1 transect, decadal variability of winter precipitation shows different characteristics in terms of amplitude and frequency in both the last 100 and last 1000 years. Such differences in variability are also seen in a comparison of time series of different El Nino/Southern Oscillation proxy records from North and South America, however, these differences do not appear to affect the spatial correlation with Pacific sea surface temperature patterns. Local and …

A Sense Of Place And Identity In Aotearoa New Zealand, Kelly Thompson Jan 2000

A Sense Of Place And Identity In Aotearoa New Zealand, Kelly Thompson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This presentation focuses on a few contemporary artists who use textiles to express connections with place and sense of self, in the "Land of the Long White Cloud", Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a subjective selection, representing both established practitioners and emergent voices, people who are approaching concepts in textile media from varying viewpoints and sources, including cultural, geographical and material relationships.

Being an island nation, in the southern part of the South Pacific, this is a land in which various waves of migration have occurred, beginning with the original settlers, the Maori. According to current archaeological evidence the first …

Afghan After A Fashion: The Fusion Of Politics With Religion And Women's Textile Craft Economies, M. Catherine Daly Jan 2000

Afghan After A Fashion: The Fusion Of Politics With Religion And Women's Textile Craft Economies, M. Catherine Daly

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Afghan men and women have been restricted in their use of traditional and contemporary items of textiles during several "jihad" periods of Afghan history, first during the Mujahedeen period of the late 1970's and since the mid-1990's by the Taleban Islamic Movement of Afghanistan (Daly, 1998b).2 "Use" during either period reflects varying viewpoints that govern not only the wearing of textiles but also involvement in the textile craft economies. In either circumstance textile craft economies have economically supported both men and women (Daly, 1999b). Most "outsiders" presume that the strict measures imposed by first the Mujahedeen then followed by …

Heavens' Embroidered Cloths - Textiles From The Honan Chapel, University College Cork, Ireland, Elizabeth Wincott Heckett Jan 2000

Heavens' Embroidered Cloths - Textiles From The Honan Chapel, University College Cork, Ireland, Elizabeth Wincott Heckett

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

University College Cork was founded in 1845 as Queen's College, at that time a secular state institution for third level education for men. By the end of the century the College had prospered and was taking in students not only from the city but from the whole county. Since Queen's College was non-sectarian, initially there was no Chapel built for College use. The Honan Chapel was built by private bequest to fill this gap and to provide a spiritual base for Roman Catholic students attending College. Robert, Matthew and Isabella Honan, brothers and sister, were the last of a wealthy …

India-West Africa Trade Textiles (Iwatt): 'An Escapade In The Life' Of Gujarati Mirror-Work Embroidery, Hazel A. Lutz

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In this paper I will analyze the development of design within the several-hundred-yearold tradition of producing textiles in India for export to specific cultural markets in West Africa, in particular the appearance of Gujarati-style mirror-work embroidery within RMHK Fancy in the 1990s. I begin by describing the research process and defining RMHKFancy.

The paper is based on ethnographic field research I completed in Madras, India on contemporary embroidery production for export to West Africa in 1997. The research addressed the question of how design and production occur in a transnational trade textile tradition1 between India and West Africa, involving …

Material And The Promise Of The Immaterial, Ingrid Bachmann Jan 2000

Material And The Promise Of The Immaterial, Ingrid Bachmann

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The rhetoric around digital technologies is infused with the utopian promises of deliverance and progress - the promise of another frontier, an original uncharted space, virgin territory, a clean slate, another chance to "get it right". This notion of the frontier has almost mythic proportions in the language and literature of the West. From the 'promised land' offered in the Bible, to the lost Garden of Eden, from Columbus' arrival in the Americas, to the cowboy and Indian films of the 1950's and the space adventure films of the 1980's and 1990's, the notion of the frontier continues to engage …

Resurgent Malaria At The Millennium Control Strategies In Crisis, J. Kevin Baird Jan 2000

Resurgent Malaria At The Millennium Control Strategies In Crisis, J. Kevin Baird

United States Public Health Resources

Completion of the Panama Canal in 1914 marked the beginning of an era of vector control that achieved conspicuous success against malaria. In 1955 the World Health Organization (WHO) adopted the controversial Global Eradication Campaign emphasising DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) spraying in homes. The incidence of malaria fell sharply where the programme was implemented, but the strategy was not applied in holoendemic Africa. This, along with the failure to achieve eradication in larger tropical regions, contributed to disillusionment with the policy. The World Health Assembly abandoned the eradication strategy in 1969. Aresurgence of malaria began at about that time and today reaches …

Fiber Art/Works Of Art: Positioning And Perception In The Marketplace, Alice Zrebiec Jan 2000

Fiber Art/Works Of Art: Positioning And Perception In The Marketplace, Alice Zrebiec

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Contemporary works made of fiber or incorporating textile techniques frequently encounter an identity crisis. Craft? Fiber Art? Fine Art? How do these descriptions limit marketability and representation of the work, or, conversely, open up new horizons for talented artists? The owners of five galleries presented their viewpoints with specific reference to the focus of their galleries, the artists they represent, and the context in which they present textile-related works to the viewing public. They addressed the following issues: How did these galleries evolve their specific visions? Where is their emphasis: on materials and techniques, craftsmanship, or artistic content and expression? …

Review Of The New Encyclopedia Of The American West Edited By Howard R. Lamar, David J. Wishart Jan 2000

Review Of The New Encyclopedia Of The American West Edited By Howard R. Lamar, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Reader's Encyclopedia of the American West, edited by Yale historian Howard Lamar and published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company in 1977, was a pretty good book, bringing to the American public the first comprehensive single-volume treatment of the history of the West. But that reference work has now been superseded-and dwarfed-by this new rendition, also edited by Lamar. More than 1250 pages of three-column text, 1.5 million words in all, are given over to 2400 alphabetically ordered entries written by more than three hundred scholars. Long thematic entries, on the fur trade or railroads, for example, are interspersed …

Conservation In A Highly Fragmented Landscape: The Central Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregional Conservation Plan, The Central Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregion Planning Team

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

With the adoption of Conservation by Design in 1995, The Nature Conservancy recognized the importance of working at larger scales to achieve our mission which is: the long-term survival of all viable native species and community types through the design and conservation of portfolios of sites within ecoregions. The Conservancy set forth to design conservation plans on an ecoregional basis by working closely with various conservation partners. These plans are intended to provide a framework within which the Conservancy and our partners, such as the Natural Heritage Programs, can make decisions regarding conservation actions to be taken at the …

Mitochondrial-Dna Variation Within And Among Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) Subspecies, Allen L. Szalanski, Kevin E. Church, David W. Oates, Richard Bischof, Thomas O. Powers Jan 2000

Mitochondrial-Dna Variation Within And Among Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) Subspecies, Allen L. Szalanski, Kevin E. Church, David W. Oates, Richard Bischof, Thomas O. Powers

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Genetic variation within and among wild Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, subspecies was measured using DNA sequencing and PCR-RFLP analysis of a 655 bp portion of the mtDNA D-loop region. DNA sequencing from 25 individual Eastern, Merriam, Rio Grande and domestic Turkeys revealed 16 polymorphic sites. Parsimony and neighbor-joining analysis did not show support for the four wild Turkey subspecies studied. PCR-RFLP analysis of 118 individuals revealed 13 distinct haplotypes. Haplotype variation was detected in all wild Turkey populations, and Wright's F-statistics revealed pronounced differentiation (FST = 0.302) among populations. Based on these data, non-native wild Turkey populations do not …

Salinity And Shade Preferences Result In Ovipositional Differences Between Sympatric Tiger Beetle Species, W. Wyatt Hoback, Douglas A. Golick, Tina Marie Svatos, Stephen M. Spomer, Leon G. Higley Jan 2000

Salinity And Shade Preferences Result In Ovipositional Differences Between Sympatric Tiger Beetle Species, W. Wyatt Hoback, Douglas A. Golick, Tina Marie Svatos, Stephen M. Spomer, Leon G. Higley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

1. Adult tiger beetles of the genus Cicindela often co-occur within a habitat but larvae do not. Larvae are sedentary and form usually permanent burrows at the site of oviposition where they require 1-3 years for development.

2. To test niche partitioning based on ovipositional preference, the behavior of two sympatric salt marsh tiger beetles, Cicindela circumpicta and C. togata (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), were examined.

3. In laboratory studies, female C. circumpicta and C. togata distinguished between experimental salinities, with the former preferring 4 parts per thousand (ppt) and the latter preferring 12 ppt. In the field, C. circumpicta larvae were …
