Review Of Winnipeg: A Prairie Portrait By Martin Cash, Geoffrey C. Smith Oct 2000

Review Of Winnipeg: A Prairie Portrait By Martin Cash, Geoffrey C. Smith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The purpose of this attractively produced book, a 125th anniversary project of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, is to celebrate the city at the threshold of the new millennium. Its author, a business writer for a local newspaper, is supported by a collaborative team that includes two writer-reporters and two photographers. The text, snappy and essentially journalistic in character, is organized into two main parts. The first ten chapters offer brief overviews of Winnipeg's history and contemporary aspects of the city's business activities, financial services, communications, arts, educational resources, healthcare facilities, recreational opportunities, and wider social fabric. The second part …

Review Of Terrestrial Ecoregions Of North America: A Conservation Assessment By Taylor H. Ricketts And Eric Dinerstein, O. W. Archibold Oct 2000

Review Of Terrestrial Ecoregions Of North America: A Conservation Assessment By Taylor H. Ricketts And Eric Dinerstein, O. W. Archibold

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Terrestrial Ecoregions of North America provides a comprehensive assessment of the status of biodiversity and conservation within the United States and Canada. Part of a global program conducted by the World Wildlife Fund, it is essentially a reference work offering baseline data for conservation planning and restoration. The book emphasises the precarious condition of many natural areas in North America, at the same time illustrating the great diversity that still exists in some areas and stressing the sense of urgency required to ensure the preservation of viable plant and animal populations in their natural habitats. It is not a textbook …

Review Of Groundwater Management In The West By Jeffrey S. Ashley And Zachary A. Smith, David E. Kromm Oct 2000

Review Of Groundwater Management In The West By Jeffrey S. Ashley And Zachary A. Smith, David E. Kromm

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Groundwater is becoming an increasingly important water source throughout the United States, especially in the West where surface supplies are limited and usually over-committed. An assessment of groundwater in the West is needed, and this book fills an important gap in providing useful information in a well-organized and accessible fashion.

Ashley and Smith discuss the West, incorporating nineteen states, within four subregions: Pacific Coast, Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, and the Southwest. Each state is addressed in an individual chapter observing the same format: after a brief introduction, the authors describe the state's physical characteristics and demographics, the laws, politics, and …

A Flexible K-12 Weather Data Collection And Education Program, Mark A. Mesarch, S. J. Meyer, David C. Gosselin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Nebraska Earth Science Education Network (NESEN) is an organization within the University of Nebraska-Lincoln whose objectives are to: 1) promote and enhance K-12 earth science education in Nebraska, 2) improve teacher knowledge and understanding so that students become better informed about the complexities of environmental and natural resources issues and 3) enhance the transfer of earth science information to the K-12 teaching community (Gosselin, Mohlman, Mesarch & Meyer, 1996; Gosselin et al., 1999). To achieve this last objective NESEN developed the Students and Teachers Exchanging Data, Information and Ideas (STEDII) program with the help of support from the National …

High Return Rates For Relocated Red-Tailed Hawks: Preliminary Findings At Portland International Airport, Julie Fukuda, Carole Hallett

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)

Pacific Habitat Services, Inc. (PHS), under contract with the Port of Portland (Port), trapped, banded, and relocated red-tailed hawks at the Portland International Airport (PDX) in Portland, Oregon, beginning in October 1999. Although the Port has a program to deal with wildlife hazards to aircraft operations, raptor prey base management and hazing hadn’t effectively reduced wildlife hazards. Nineteen birdstrikes occurred in September, 1999. Prior to this season, birdstrikes ranged from 0 to 11 within a one-month period. Thus, immediate action was needed to reduce raptor abundance on the airfield. In fall and winter of 1999, PHS captured and relocated fifteen …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The first Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) genomes completely sequenced (19.3-kb positive-sense RNA), from four biologically distinct isolates, are unexpectedly divergent in nucleotide sequence (up to 60% divergence). Understanding of whether these large sequence differences resulted from recent evolution is important for the design of disease management strategies, particularly the use of genetically engineered mild (essentially symptomless)-strain cross protection and RNA-mediated transgenic resistance. The complete sequence of a mild isolate (T30) which has been endemic in Florida for about a century was found to be nearly identical to the genomic sequence of a mild isolate (T385) from Spain. Moreover, samples of …

Description Of A New Subspecies Of Poanes Aaroni (Hesperioidae: Hesperiinae) From The West Central Gulf Coast Of The Southern United States, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Poanes aaroni bordeloni is described from Jefferson County, Texas, United States. This taxon is part of a lepidopteran community endemic to the west central area of the United States Gulf Coast between Mobile Bay, Alabama and Galveston Bay, Texas. As such, bordeloni is defined taxonomically by its evolutionary development as much as by its facies. Bordeloni is the largest aaroni subspecies. Bordeloni males are marked much like those of P. a. howardi both dorsally and ventrally. Bordeloni females usually have the fulvous spotting on the dorsal forewings reduced as in P. a. minimus females while …

Parasite Community Structure In Pimephales Promelas (Pisces: Cyprinidae) From Two Converging Streams, M. A. Weichman, John A. Janovy Jr. Jun 2000

Parasite Community Structure In Pimephales Promelas (Pisces: Cyprinidae) From Two Converging Streams, M. A. Weichman, John A. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

Parasites of the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, were examined in fish collected from Elk Creek (40.88534°N, 96.83366°W) and West Oak Creek (40.90821°N, 96.81432°W), Lancaster County, Nebraska. These two streams are part of the Salt Valley watershed and flow together approximately 2 km downstream from the collection sites to form Oak Creek. This study examined the extent to which the two tributaries constitute a continuous habitat with respect to fish hosts. The parasite community included Trichodina sp., Myxobolus sp., Dactylogyrus simplex, D. bychowskyi, and D. pectenatus (all on gills); Gyrodactylus hoffmani (gill and body surface); Posthodiplostomum sp. (neascus, body …

Shifts In Mid- To Late-Holocene Anion Composition In Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota): Comparison Of Diatom And Ostracode Inferences, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Alison J. Smith May 2000

Shifts In Mid- To Late-Holocene Anion Composition In Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota): Comparison Of Diatom And Ostracode Inferences, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Alison J. Smith

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The fossil diatom record from Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota) was used to reconstruct salinity and brine type between 2640 and 4645 14C yr BP. This lake was selected for a brine-type reconstruction because a previous study using fossil-ostracode assemblages indicated a shift in anion composition during the mid-Holocene (Smith et al., 1997). Salinity was reconstructed using a transfer function developed for the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America; the reconstruction revealed that salinity was higher (1.5–6.2 g l−1) between ~4000 and 4645 14C yr BP and dropped to 0.35–1.2 g l−1 after 4000 14C yr …

"Going To Indian Territory": Attitudes Toward Native Americans In Little House On The Prairie, Philip Heldrich May 2000

"Going To Indian Territory": Attitudes Toward Native Americans In Little House On The Prairie, Philip Heldrich

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Since its first printing in 1935, Little House on the Prairie has been a perennial favorite among countless readers. The Little House series itself ranks consistently as one of the most commercially popular of all times. However, Little House on the Prairie, the second book in the series, has become the center of numerous controversies. Yellow Medicine East School District, in Granite, Minnesota, which serves a portion of the Upper Sioux Community of that region, stopped class reading of the book, citing disgust with the text's portrayals of Native Americans. Such action follows a similar banning of the text …

Hebraica Veritas? An Exhibition From The Collection Of The Center For Judaic Studies Library, Stephen G. Burnett, Seth Jerchower May 2000

Hebraica Veritas? An Exhibition From The Collection Of The Center For Judaic Studies Library, Stephen G. Burnett, Seth Jerchower

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Christian Hebraism was an offshoot of Renaissance humanism whose devotees—biblical scholars, theologians, lawyers, physicians, scientists, philosophers, and teachers in Latin schools—borrowed and adapted texts, literary forms, and ideas from Jewish scholarship and tradition to meet Christian cultural and religious needs. Intellectual and cultural exchange did occur between Jew and Christian during the Middle Ages, but paled by comparison with what occurred between 1450 and 1750. Encounters between cultures can be fruitful, but also very painful. Certainly Christian Hebraism had such effects both upon European Jewry, and upon western tradition. One of the most tangible witnesses to the sudden and sustained …

Learning To Look Through The Eyes Of Our Students: Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry, Joanne Arhar, Gayle A. Buck May 2000

Learning To Look Through The Eyes Of Our Students: Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry, Joanne Arhar, Gayle A. Buck

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The story we are about to tell occurred when Gayle was a middle school science teacher and graduate student in Joanne’s seminar on the study of teaching. Gayle was trying to make sense of her science students’ indifference toward the environment, an attitude that concerned her as an environmentalist. She turned her inquiry into an action research project that sought to answer the question, ‘What are the assumptions that my middle school students have about their relationship with the environment?’ Joanne was mentoring Gayle in her action research study, and at the same time exploring Gayle’s perspective as an action …

Occupational Segregation Of Women On The Great Plains, Ann Mari May, Robert Watrel Apr 2000

Occupational Segregation Of Women On The Great Plains, Ann Mari May, Robert Watrel

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Despite large increases in the participation of women in the paid labor force, occupational segregation by sex continues to be a significant characteristic of the labor market in the US. To better understand occupational segregation, we developed a new measure of occupational segregation that allows us to identify "female-dominated," "male-dominated," and "integrated" occupations. We use the new measure to examine differences in occupational segregation in the Great Plains states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, compared with the US as a whole. Our results indicate that more women on the Great Plains are employed than expected, given male …

Review Of Transcontinental America, 1850•1915, Volume 3 Of The Shaping Of America: A Geographical Perspective On 500 Years Of History By D. W. Meinig, G. Malcom Lewis Apr 2000

Review Of Transcontinental America, 1850•1915, Volume 3 Of The Shaping Of America: A Geographical Perspective On 500 Years Of History By D. W. Meinig, G. Malcom Lewis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The editors of the Journal of Historical Geography considered the publication of the third volume of Donald Meinig's "magisterial historical geography" to be so important as to merit a sixteen-page special feature: an account of the project by the author followed by invited commentaries by Cole Harris and Carville Earle (JHG, January 1999). Meinig explains that "America" refers to the United States, though "other Americas" (Canada, Mexico, Panama, etc.) are considered in presenting it in "a broader geographic context... ." The Shaping in the series title announces an emphasis on "form, morphology, spatial patterns, [and] geographic structure"; in the author's …

Review Of With Scarcely A Ripple: Anglo-Canadian Migration Into The United States And Western Canada, 1850-1920 By Randy W. Widdis, Robert M. Bone Apr 2000

Review Of With Scarcely A Ripple: Anglo-Canadian Migration Into The United States And Western Canada, 1850-1920 By Randy W. Widdis, Robert M. Bone

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

There is no Little Canada in the United States; yet the relocation of Anglo-Canadians to the United States ranks among the largest group of foreigners settling in America. Why then is their cultural impact on the American landscape virtually invisible? This is the intriguing question Randy W. Widdis addresses in his aptly titled With Scarcely a Ripple.

Widdis begins his story with the relocation of some 50,000 Loyalists (Americans who remained loyal to the British crown) north during the late eighteenth century and ends with the settlement of the Canadian Prairies. In between his account of these two historic movements …

Presidential Voting Regions Of The Northern Great Plains: No Need For An East Dakota And West Dakota, Robert H. Watrel, Erin Hogan Fouberg Apr 2000

Presidential Voting Regions Of The Northern Great Plains: No Need For An East Dakota And West Dakota, Robert H. Watrel, Erin Hogan Fouberg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In South Dakota and North Dakota, political pundits, journalists, politicians, academics, and citizens often reduce political questions to an east-west divide. Here we statistically examine whether an east-west divide occurred in presidential voting behavior in the Northern Great Plains over the last century. We found that there were four presidential voting regions in South Dakota and North Dakota. These presidential voting regions reflect the economic, ancestral, and political cultures and landscapes of this area of the Northern Great Plains.

Collaborating Toward Intellectual Practice: Re-Imagining Service In English Studies, Amy M. Goodburn, Joy Ritchie Mar 2000

Collaborating Toward Intellectual Practice: Re-Imagining Service In English Studies, Amy M. Goodburn, Joy Ritchie

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This essay chronicles the story of our collaborations as scholars, teachers, colleagues, friends, and co-coordinators of the first-year writing program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We believe our narrative can lead to an expanded vision of service in the profession by illuminating how ongoing discussions about collaboration can help us construct and imagine service as intellectual work. As two faculty members (one assistant and one associate professor) responsible for collaboratively coordinating a first-year-writing program, we hope to question what it means to do administrative service collaboratively, to examine this hydra-headed authority that we wield and attempt to implement within our …

Review Of Forging The Prairie West, By John Herd Thompson., Adele Perry

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

John Herd Thompson's Forging the Prairie West is a wise, clever, and decisive book, though not an especially consistent one. But that hardly matters: Thompson's lively prose, trenchant observations, and firm portrayal of the Prairie West's history make for an analysis both accessible and engaging.

Trends In Retailing Activity Across Nebraska, Bruce B. Johnson, Brandon Raddatz Feb 2000

Trends In Retailing Activity Across Nebraska, Bruce B. Johnson, Brandon Raddatz

Cornhusker Economics

The structural trend in production agriculture towards fewer and larger farms has had its counter-part in the retailing sector of the state as well. Over the past 30 years, the total retailing pie has increasingly shifted to the larger retailing centers across the State. The smaller retailing centers, particularly, have experienced greater retailing leakage. Moreover, these general shifts have seemed to continue unabated regardless of the overall economic conditions of their regions.
