Direct Measurement Of Water Loss From Vegetation Without Disturbing The Normal Structure Of The Soil, J. E. Weaver, John Crist Apr 1924

Direct Measurement Of Water Loss From Vegetation Without Disturbing The Normal Structure Of The Soil, J. E. Weaver, John Crist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

One of the most serious objections to the usual method of determining the water losses from plants is the almost universal use of containers which are quite too small to accommodate the normal development of the root system. But even where containers of sufficient size to overcome this obstacle are employed, the plants are grown in a mass of soil which has been at least fairly recently screened, mixed, aerated and watered and thus its structure is wholly unlike that which occurs in nature. This difference has been noticed for a number of years in connection with investigations of root …

The Hemotoxins Of Intestinal Parasites: A Critical Summary With Notes Of Some Cases, Joseph Mellick Leidy Ii Mar 1924

The Hemotoxins Of Intestinal Parasites: A Critical Summary With Notes Of Some Cases, Joseph Mellick Leidy Ii

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The mechanical and reflex disturbances produced by animal parasites in the intestinal canal and other organs of the body have long been recognized by pathologists and clinicians. The researches of economic parasitologists and the occasional reports by clinical observers indicate the presence of other factors deserving of further investigation. That certain parasitic worms secrete substances that effect the blood of their hosts deleteriously has been shown conclusively by the researches of Tallqvist, Schwartz, Schaumann and others. The broad tapeworm of man which is known to produce severe anaemia contains a hemolytic agent according to the experiments and researches of Schaumann …

Root Behavior And Crop Yield Under Irrigation, Frank C. Jean, John E. Weaver Jan 1924

Root Behavior And Crop Yield Under Irrigation, Frank C. Jean, John E. Weaver

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

More than half of the surface of the earth receives insufficient precipitation
for the most favorable growth of crops. The, best method of making up this deficiency is through the application of water by irrigation. Hence the economical use of irrigation water is one of the chief problems of agriculture in arid regions. Since much more land is available than can be irrigated by the supply of water, even when methods of greatest economy are employed, the welfare of these regions demands that the irrigation water be used as efficiently as possible (cf. Harris, 1916). It has been estimated that …

Test 101: Bear Model B 25-35, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

A Genetic View Of Sex Expression In The Flowering Plants, R. A. Emerson Jan 1924

A Genetic View Of Sex Expression In The Flowering Plants, R. A. Emerson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

It seems a conservative statement to say that studies

of the past twenty years among animal forms have

tended increasingly to link the phenomena of sex inheritance

with the behavior of chromosomes. To this

result, cytology and genetics have contributed perhaps

almost equally. The number of forms in which

one sex is known to have a morphologically different

chromosome complex from the other sex are many.

That, with respect to the chromosomes, the female of

certain forms produces gametes of a single kind,

whereas the male produces two kinds, and that in

turn an egg fertilized by one kind of …

The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es Sep 1923

The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

This casting out of a dead or at least abnormal fetus we call abortion. It constitutes the culminating accident in a process set into motion by disease or injury. To the breeder it is its most conspicuous feature, and it's more or less constant occurrence among live stock warrants us to speak of the abortion problem. It is the purpose of this publication to lay before our Nebraska breeders such information on the subject as can be gathered from the more recent literature and from observations in the field and the laboratory.

A Founder Of American Parasitology, Joseph Leidy, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

A biographical overview of American parasitologist Joseph Leidy and his work. bron September 9, 1823, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - died 1891.

Conclusion

A detailed study of his writing justifies the statement that no one has yet adequately presented or fully elucidated Leidy's contributions to helminthology and his writing will furnish rich lead to many future workers in this field. How monumental the task of preparing a record of the full life work of this extraordinary man who in the same breath as it were, in a single letter records discoveries of far reaching import on bacteria, amoebae, worms, and fossil …

Relation Of Environment And Other Factors To Potato Wilt Caused By Fusarium Oxysporum, R. W. Goss

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The present work was undertaken to determine the influence of some environmental factors on the infection and progress of the disease potato wilt. The work has not progressed to the point of determining the exact relation of each of these factors. However, the results thus far obtained are presented here in order to direct attention to the nature and distribution of the disease in relation to the environmental conditions under which certain types of infection take place.

Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith Jan 1923

Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Physiology and ecology depend for their constructive development largely upon the applications of physico-chemical concepts to living organisms and their environment, to their life processes, reactions, and interrelations. A concept is valuable biologically in so far as it can be applied and used as a tool for better understanding of the phenomena related to life. Ecology, as the study of the relations between organisms and their environment and of the interrelations of organisms, depends primarily upon the findings of physiology (Clements, 1905). But to apply physicochemical concepts and hence make them of value to the physiologist or ecologist commonly requires …
