Winter Wheat Investigations, T. A. Kiesselbach Nov 1925

Winter Wheat Investigations, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Twenty years of wheat breeding, consisting chiefly of the isolation and testing of pure lines, has now been conducted at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. It is the purpose of this paper to report the conduct and results of this work. The resulting strains are compared with the best other wheats available from Nebraska and other sources. The effects of a number of cultural practices related to the preparation of seed, seeding, treatment of the growing crop, and harvesting are also presented. Some consideration is given to the experimental technique of the comparative tests.

Dairy Calf Care And Management, H. P. Davis, R. F. Morgan Jul 1925

Dairy Calf Care And Management, H. P. Davis, R. F. Morgan

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Calf raising begins before the calf is born. A cow that is healthy and in good physical condition will, in all probability, drop a strong, vigorous calf. The feeding and care of the cow before calving is therefore of the greatest importance for the future development of the calf.

An American Fossil Giraffe, W. D. Matthew, E. H. Barbour Apr 1925

An American Fossil Giraffe, W. D. Matthew, E. H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A fragment of the lower jaw of a large fossil mammal with two well-worn teeth was dug up in June 1918, at a depth of 20 feet, while digging a cess pool at Bradshaw, York County, Nebraska. This unique specimen, accessioned 7-7-18, was brought to the Nebraska State Museum by A. Archie Dorsey, and was donated by C. B. Palmet, both of Bradshaw. It undoubtedly occurred in loess, which is thickly as well. as extensively developed in this region. It is a ruminant jaw, the teeth preserved being P4 and m1. The characteristic pattern of the premolar excludes reference to …

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es Feb 1925

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The tuberculosis of swine constitutes a definite and very interesting section of the general problem of the tuberculoses of warm-blooded animals. No one section of this general tuberculosis problem can be adequately solved without regard to all the other sections into which it may be divided. The disease in swine is perhaps the most outstanding example which illustrates this point. This animal, extremely susceptible to tuberculous disease, but without a type of infection specifically its own, derives its infection by contact with any of the types of tuberculosis of warm-blooded animals.

These Fifty Years: A History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska

PREFACE

IT seems especially appropriate at this time to publish a history of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska. The year 1922 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the formal establishment of the college by the Board of Regents, while the year 1924 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the enrollment of the first students in agricultural subjects. It is hoped and intended that this little volume shall preserve for the future much valuable material that would otherwise soon be forgotten.

To study back over fifty years of Nebraska education and agriculture and to choose the facts that should …

Nebraska Place-Names, Lilian Linder Fitzpatrick A.M. Jan 1925

Nebraska Place-Names, Lilian Linder Fitzpatrick A.M.

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

This study of Nebraska place-names is as exhaustive as I could make it. Nevertheless it is not wholly complete. There are a few town names in many counties concerning which I could obtain no accurate information. Hence they are not entered. There are other names concerning which my information is deficient despite my best efforts. Moreover Nebraska is a large state and new towns are constantly springing up, especially in the remoter counties. I would like to have the record for the state as complete as possible. Additional information and corrective or supplementary material, where these may be needed, will …

Manganese Fulgurites, Harold J. Cook Jan 1925

Manganese Fulgurites, Harold J. Cook

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

During August, 1924, while doing reconnaisance work near the head of Chugwater Creek, Wyoming, on the ranch of Mr. J. L. Jordon, the writer's attention was called to some unusual and interesting specimens found in a limited area, perhaps an acre or so, on the slope of the small butte flanking the Chugwater Valley. The hills of the region are of Tertiary age, the particular spot under consideration being Oligocene, the Brule stage, or Oreodon beds.

Test 114: Heider 15-27, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

The Chromosome Number Of Maize, T. A. Kiesselbach, N. F. Petersen Jan 1925

The Chromosome Number Of Maize, T. A. Kiesselbach, N. F. Petersen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The wide-spread interest in the genetics of maize, coupled with the uncertainty as to the number of chromosomes occurring in this species prompted the investigation which is here reported. From a review of the literature it appears that Kuwada (1911, 1915, 1919) is the only worker who has reported extensive counts of maize chromosomes. His results are summarized in table 1. Variations were reported in the number of chromosomes both within and between varieties as well as between different cells of individual plants. He concluded that sweet varieties are usually characterized by having twelve chromosomes, and starchy varieties by having …

Range And Pasture Management, J. E. Weaver Apr 1924

Range And Pasture Management, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Sampson's range and pasture management is an excellent example of the application of the principles of ecology to the solution of economic problems. In grazing experiments it is of equal importance to know what is happening to the stock and to the vegetation. This emphasizes the fact, which ecologists are coming more and more to recognize, that animals, both wild and domesticated, have a proper place in the environment and that they play an important role in modifying the vegetational development. This volume consists largely of first-hand information obtained by the author during fifteen years of intensive pasture investigations for …
