The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin Aug 1962

The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This study was undertaken to devise an easy, accurate method to detect and separate various components in extracts of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants by using techniques common to virus purification and to determine the effect of some of the more common denaturing and adsorbing agents on these healthy plant components.Conditions for density-gradient centrifugation were selected to give the best separation of normal components, and these conditions were then used as the basis of an analytical method to evaluate the denaturation procedures.

Protoplasmic components of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants were isolated and studied by use of techniques …

Toxic Hazards In Aerial Application, Paul W. Smith Apr 1962

Toxic Hazards In Aerial Application, Paul W. Smith

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

An analysis of the hazards accompanying the aerial application of toxic pest-control chemicals is presented. The nature of the chemicals, the symptoms of toxicity, recommended treatment, and suggestions for safe-handling, are discussed.

The introduction of the chlorinated, cyclic hydrocarbons for large-scale use as agricultural insecticides somewhat less than two decades ago, marked the beginning of a new era in agricultural pest control. In the intervening years, new chemicals, many of them engineered for specific agricultural purposes, have appeared in rapid succession. The large number and wide variety of these compounds, and their new and unfamiliar chemical and toxicological properties, have …

Negro College Students' Participation In Sit-Ins, Ruth Searles, J. Allen Williams Jr. Mar 1962

Negro College Students' Participation In Sit-Ins, Ruth Searles, J. Allen Williams Jr.

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Socioeconomic and legal changes in the position of southern Negroes have been accompanied by a changing pattern of race relations and a new attitude on the part of Negro leaders. Data from a closed-answer questionnaire administered to students in three Negro colleges in North Carolina support the hypothesis that sit-in protests are less indicative of social alienation among Negroes than of their identification with or positive reference to the white middle class.

Using A Density Gradient Column To Determine Wheat Density, Wendell R. Peters, Robert Katz Feb 1962

Using A Density Gradient Column To Determine Wheat Density, Wendell R. Peters, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A wheat kernel placed in a density gradient column will sink until it reaches the level where its average density is equal to that of the liquid at that level. Knowing the density of the liquid as a function of height, one can measure accurately the density of the kernel to three decimal places in about 1 to 2 minutes per kernel. Kernel density ranged from a maximum of 1.416 at 7.5% moisture to a minimum of 1.255 g./cm.3 at 18.5% moisture, for the samples tested. Kernels of a homogeneously selected sample of hard spring wheat (Lee) varied in …

Pigeons, Starlings And English Sparrows, G. L. Hockenyos Feb 1962

Pigeons, Starlings And English Sparrows, G. L. Hockenyos

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)

This paper deals with the control of excessive numbers of pigeons, starlings and English sparrows in urban situations in the Midwestern region of the United States. Control procedures should always be based on a survey of the factors involved in the problem so that the most feasible methods can be determined. There is no one tool of bird control that fits all situations, and in most cases more than one tool is indicated. Since the feral pigeon is the most common pest species, emphasis will be placed on pigeon control methods. Urban bird control, like urban rat control, may involve …

Federal Law And Vertebrate Pest Control, Justus C. Ward Feb 1962

Federal Law And Vertebrate Pest Control, Justus C. Ward

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)

Shortly after the passage of the Federal Insecticide Act of 1910, mammal control specialists in the Bureau of Biological Survey began to consider a similar law to cover the chemicals with which they were concerned. Work on the project went slowly and spasmodically, but reached the point of having a Federal Rodenticide Act available for study and possible revision in 1928. At this time, the mammal control chemicals in use were limited to strychnine--alkaloid and sulphate-arsenic, barium carbonate, thallium sulphate, phosphorus, sodium and calcium cyanide, carbon disulphide, and red squill. Strychnine alkaloid was about the only predatory animal control agent, …

It is a pleasure and privilege for me to welcome all of you to this conference. And it is a conference, not a convention. No motions or resolutions will be entertained, as this conference is made up of representatives of many governmental agencies and countries; hence, not a place for resolutions. We are here to get acquainted with each other and to listen to experts from North America and Korea tell us about the best methods of controlling troublesome and pestiferous birds, mammals and snakes, and to discuss related problems concerning diseases and pesticides. Since the program is crowded, each …

Wolf Control In British Columbia, Canada, G. A. West Feb 1962

Wolf Control In British Columbia, Canada, G. A. West

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)

Up to 1949, the Fish and Game Branch employed personnel, some of whom were temporary, to attempt control of the extremely high wolf pop¬ulations of the central and northern portions of British Columbia. Coyotes were also very numerous in the central and southern regions and had to be considered because of their depredations. The field men were keen and conscientious but their efforts were not co-ordinated. Control areas were severely restricted in size as techniques were not adaptable enough and because of a lack of manpower. Eventually, sheepmen went out of business entirely over wide areas, cattlemen were subjected to …

Methods Of Controlling Starlings And Blackbirds, Adolph Zajanc Feb 1962

Methods Of Controlling Starlings And Blackbirds, Adolph Zajanc

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)

Most people have accepted the fact that all living things can be beneficial to mankind in some way or other. This is especially true of our wild birds, since they provide enjoyment and wholesome recreation for most of us, regardless of whether we live on farms or in the city. But despite the fact that wild birds are for the most part beneficial, at times individuals or populations of certain species can seriously affect man's interests. When such situations occur, some measures of relief are desirable and usually eagerly sought. This report is not intended to answer all the questions …

Public Health Service Drinking Water Standards Jan 1962

Public Health Service Drinking Water Standards

United States Public Health Resources

The Standards published herein have been promulgated as Public Health Regulations in the Federal Register. As such they became effective April 5, 1962, as the Standards to which drinking water and water supply systems used by carriers and others subject to Federal quarantine regulations must conform. The Division of Environmental Engineering and Food Protection is responsible for the application of these Standards to all carrier water supplies. These Standards supersede the Public Health Service Drinking Water Standards- 1946, as amended in 1956. The new Standards were developed with the assistance of an Advisory Committee appointed by the Public Health Service …

Purification And Sanitary Control Of Water (Potable And Waste), Paul W. Kabler Jan 1962

Purification And Sanitary Control Of Water (Potable And Waste), Paul W. Kabler

United States Public Health Resources

Although most of the streams draining inhabited regions are contaminated with human or animal feces, water-borne disease today in the United States is relatively uncommon. Pathogenic enteric microorganisms probably do not multiply in raw water sources under normal conditions. They usually disappear in a relatively short time, with the rates depending on variations in environmental conditions. Urban water supplies have played a diminishing role in the transmission of intestinal disease because of improvements in the detection and enumeration of pollution indicators, water and sewage treatment processes, and t h e sanitary control of water systems.

Malic Dehydrogenase Activity At 101 C Under Hydrostatic Pressure, Richard Y. Morita, Roger D. Haight

Papers in Microbiology

MORITA, RICHARD Y. (University of Nebraska, Lincoln) AND ROGER D. HAIGHT. Malic dehydrogenase activitv at 101 C under hydrostatic pressure. J. Bacteriol. 83:1341-1346. 1962.-No malic dehydrogenase activity was found to occur at 101 C at various hydrostatic pressures from 1 to 700 atm. However, activity was demonstrated with hydrostatic pressures above 700 atm, with optimal activity at 1,300 atm at the same temperature. Explanation of the data is based upon thermal denaturation of the enzyme, which involves a molecular volume increase of the enzyme. The molecular volume increase is counteracted by hydrostatic pressure. Pressures above 700 atm to 1,500 atm …

Interaction Between The Parameters Of Hydrostatic Pressure And Temperature On Aspartase Of Escherichia Coli, Roger D. Haight, Richard Y. Morita

Papers in Microbiology

HAIGHT, ROGER D. (University of Nebraska, Lincoln) AND RICHARD Y. MORITA. Interaction between the parameters of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on aspartase of Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 83:112-120. 1962.-The data obtained from studies of an aspartase preparation and aspartase in cells of Escherichia coli indicate that there is an interaction between the parameters of hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Pressure was found to decrease aspartase activity at 45 C and lower in vitro and below 53 C in vivo, thereby indicating that when the enzymesubstrate complex is formed there is an increase in molecular volume which is counteracted by pressure. Above …

Speed Calculations And The Expert Witness, David I. Cook Jan 1962

Speed Calculations And The Expert Witness, David I. Cook

Nebraska Law Review

There has been a recent increase in the use of expert witness testimony relating to speeds of vehicles involved in collisions. This has resulted in a need for jurists and lawyers to become increasingly informed of the fundamental physical laws which form the basis of this testimony. The purpose in writing this paper is to discuss in a legal context the most commonly used physical laws in order to clarify an area which has become clouded by the use of incomplete data and erroneous hypotheses. After a consideration of the Nebraska position, the physical laws used in establishing speed on …

Evaluation Of Sires Available Through Planned Mating, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson, H. W. Carter

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

There is some concern that methods of sire evaluation which utilize contemporary stablemate averages can be biased by differential genetic merit of the mates of these sires. A little reflection, however, indicates that even if the cows to which some sires are mated are more highly selected than the mates of other sires, this differential merit will not affect seriously the ranking of sires according to the evaluation of their progeny. Until the present, data have not been readily available with which to study the seriousness of this problem. The present study does not deal with the question generally, but …

Sire Evaluation From Five-Month Daughter Records, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1962

Sire Evaluation From Five-Month Daughter Records, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The chief advantages of sire evaluation based on five-month daughter records are: 1. Genetic progress is inversely proportional to the turnover rate in testing bulls so that if this interval is shortened by 10%, the rate of genetic progress will be increased by 11%. The turnover period can be shortened with the use of 5-month records from about 50 months to 45 months—a decrease of 10% in time. 2. Genetic progress is also related to how many top bulls are saved and how many poor ones are culled out of all those sampled. In other words, the more bulls tested …
