Field Manual Fm 5-30, Engineer Intelligence, September 1967 (With Change 1, 1 October 1971), Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

(1) According to FM 21-205, 18 Jan 1944, "Field Manuals constitute the primary means of promulgating the basic doctrines of military training and operations."

(2) This manual supersedes FM 5-30, 1959.

(3) This manual is much different from the manual it superseded because before 1962 Engineer Intelligence was defined as intelligence about foreign military equipment and on military organizations analogous to the US Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, two civil organizations within the Corps of Engineers, the Board of engineers for Rivers and Harbors and the Beach Erosion Board, produced intelligence about foreign harbors and potential landing beaches of …

Evaluation Of The Dispersion Relations Of Photoproduction, Paul Finkler Jul 1967

Evaluation Of The Dispersion Relations Of Photoproduction, Paul Finkler

Paul Finkler Papers

A modification of the Omnes method is used to solve the singular integral equations for the 3-3 partialwave amplitudes of photoproduction. The effects of multipion production are assumed to be negligible. The method requires a knowledge of the phase at all energies. Consequently, it is necessary to treat the corresponding pion-nucleon scattering problem to determine the eBect of the high-energy behavior of the phase on the solution for the scattering amplitude at low energies. The sharply resonant nature of the problen suggests an approximation in the form of solution, rather than in the Born terms, which leads to relatively simple …

Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly Jul 1967

Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly

Robert G. Fuller Publications

The measured electrical conductivity of pure RbCl is separated into the usual anion and cation contributions with activation energies of 2.55 and 1.58 eV, respectively. By comparison with corresponding results for KC1 and NaCl it is found that the alkali-chloride anion and cation activation energies differ most for nearly equal anion and cation radii. We conclude from this anomalous trend that an extension of conventional theory is required.

F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller Jun 1967

F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

This Letter reports an investigation using pulsed electron irradiation to determine if the low efficiency of F-band coloration in calcium fluoride is caused by the instability of the F center. No transient F centers were seen in times as short as 2 x 10-7 sec. It is concluded that the inherent efficiency of F-band coloration in CaF2 is small compared with similar processes in alkali halides and a possible reason for this is discussed.

Calcium fluoride has been extensively studied and is found to be more difficult to color than alkali halides and to have absorption …

A New Family Of Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs With Some Latin Square Design Properties, Dale M. Mesner Apr 1967

A New Family Of Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs With Some Latin Square Design Properties, Dale M. Mesner

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

An extensive family of two-class PBIB designs is defined in Section 1and given the title of NL designs. Several analogies of NL designs with Latin square type designs are discussed in Sections 1 and 2. Some of these designs have already appeared in scattered contexts. Section 3 gives a construction based on finite geometry for an infinite class of XL designs, and others can be constructed by methods to be taken up elsewhere. An extension to designs with more than two associate classes is indicated in Section 4.

Problems In County-Wide Rodent Control Programming, Loring White Mar 1967

Problems In County-Wide Rodent Control Programming, Loring White

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

Vertebrate pest control is recognized and sanctioned as a legitimate function of county government in California, not only by statute but also by a century of tradition. This is an anomaly. Ordinarily, regulatory agricultural pest control programs are part of our plant quarantine system, undertaken against newly introduced pests or those which are not of common occurrence. Programs against vertebrate pests, on the other hand, are carried on where the species involved are common, usually are abundant and often are indigenous. The reason for this lies buried in a bit of history that is very pertinent to my subject.

The Current Status Of Plague In California, Keith F. Murray Mar 1967

The Current Status Of Plague In California, Keith F. Murray

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

At the first Vertebrate Pest Control Conference in 1964, I traced the history of plague control in California and outlined a revised approach, based on newer concepts of plague ecology. In our state of relative ignorance, this required a number of unproved assumptions about plague occurrence in California that verged on crystal ball gazing. These were principally that (1) plague persists in relatively resistant rodent species in certain favorable locations, (2) ground squirrels and chipmunks experience periodic epizootics, but are not permanent reservoirs, (3) plague "foci" of the past were merely sites of conspicuous epizootics, they did not necessarily correspond …

Good Practice In Vertebrate Pest Control, Philip J. Spear Mar 1967

Good Practice In Vertebrate Pest Control, Philip J. Spear

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

Good practice in pest control is a responsibility of several elements in our democratic, free-enterprise society. Most notably, these are: (1) the general public, (2) responsible government agencies and (3) industry. Before I comment about the responsibilities of each of these three groups, let me tell you about the work of structural pest control operators and their interests in vertebrate pest control. The pest control industry which I discussed in detail at the Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference (1) continues to grow and expand its fields of activity. At the present time, it is our estimate (2) that 26,700 persons …

Blackbird Behavior, Gordon W. Boudreau Mar 1967

Blackbird Behavior, Gordon W. Boudreau

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

A knowledge and understanding of a bird's habits and behavior patterns is prerequisite to any intelligent approach toward solving problems created by that species. This also applies to associated species commonly observed with it. Since my subject today is blackbirds I will confine my observations to species in this group, particularly red-winged blackbirds. The Red-Winged Blackbird, (Agelaius phoeniceus) is numerically and economically the most important. Several sub-species or races are recognized and in California the most important of these is the Bi-colored Blackbird, (A. p. californica). The ranges of subspecies commonly overlap, particularly in the Southeast, and field identification is …

Role Of The Agricultural Extension Service In Vertebrate Pest Control, Marvin D. Davis Mar 1967

Role Of The Agricultural Extension Service In Vertebrate Pest Control, Marvin D. Davis

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

Frankly, I often wonder what our role is in vertebrate pest control. It seems to me that we in A.E.S, are frequently treading in the "twilight zone" of pest control. This is because of the wide diversity of problems which arise within an area such as I represent. I feel it is most significant that our county was invited to cover the role of A.E.S. in vertebrate pest control and discuss the tremendous variations and considerations necessary to serve an urban/semi-urban to rural county. Those of you familiar with San Mateo County readily recognize the potential problems due to population …

Biological Control Of Vertebrate Pests, Walter E. Howard Mar 1967

Biological Control Of Vertebrate Pests, Walter E. Howard

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

This paper briefly introduces the subject of vertebrate pest control, integrates and interprets some important ecological principles of control methodology, and intercalates these discussions with analysis of the biological backlashes and other ecological interactions that may be created whenever troublesome species of vertebrates are controlled by biological means. Insight in this area must be deepened if we are to fulfill our primary objective of learning how to manage a healthy environment in perpetuity. One important merit of biocontrol is that most people accept carefully planned ecological dislocations in nature more readily than they do the repugnant and hazardous aspects of …

Recent Developments In The Control Of Vertebrate Problem Animals In The Province Of The Cape Of Good Hope, Republic Of South Africa, Douglas Hey Mar 1967

Recent Developments In The Control Of Vertebrate Problem Animals In The Province Of The Cape Of Good Hope, Republic Of South Africa, Douglas Hey

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

In an earlier paper (Hey, 1964 an account was given of the topography and climate of the Cape Province, a description of the vertebrate animals and birds which might be considered to fall in the category of problem animals and the control methods used. The present paper will, therefore, deal with advances in control techniques which have since been made. At this juncture, it would be appropriate to record our sincere appreciation to the Director and Staff of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and particularly to the Senior Officers of the Denver Research Center, District Agents Malcolm Allison and …

Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark Mar 1967

Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)

To fulfill the primary objective of the Vector-Borne Disease Section of NCDC to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases - a series of courses on vertebrates and arthropods and their role as reservoirs, vectors, and disease-causing agents is presented. Literature is prepared and a museum is maintained. One of these courses, Epizootic Ecology, illustrates some of the aspects dealt with in these courses. Definitions and concepts are presented followed by a brief review of principles of epidemiology and ecology. Specific examples constitute the bulk of the course. One of these, tularemia, is especially useful for the purposes of this course …

Relationships Among Herd Life, Milk Production, And Calving Interval, Paul Miller, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson Mar 1967

Relationships Among Herd Life, Milk Production, And Calving Interval, Paul Miller, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Whether to select for longer life in the herd or shorter calving interval depends on the genetic and phenotypic relationships among herd life, amount of milk in first lactation, and calving interval. Herd life and average calving interval are essentially phenotypically uncorrelated. The phenotypic and genetic correlations of herd life and milk in first lactation ranged from .19 to .25 and from .54 to .77, respectively. The phenotypic correlation of average calving interval and milk in first lactation ranged from .19 to .21. Estimates of the heritability of herd life ranged from .05 to .14. This heritability was reduced by …

Experimentation—An Articulation Of A New Myth, Leonard V. Kaplan Jan 1967

Experimentation—An Articulation Of A New Myth, Leonard V. Kaplan

Nebraska Law Review

With explicit recognition of the need for ethical codes addressing medical experimentation after the specter of Nuremberg, what problem does experimentation present to the individual and the community, and if problems do exist, why do they defy legal control? Before analyzing the ethical interaction of doctor and patient and experimenter and subject, we should first recognize that experimentation as a concept is descriptive of legal and social operations as well. Also, the law does not and cannot yield scientific answers; rather it balances, makes value judgments; the law is, in fact, experimenting when it intercedes encouraging or more often proscribing …
