Cross-Fertilization In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Cross-Fertilization In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Two simply inherited characters, o-hydroxycinnamic acid (o-HCA) content and β-glucosidase activity, were used as genetic marker s in studying the frequency of cross-fertilization in Melilotus alba Desr. Based on the o-HCA marker, the effective cross-fertilization averaged 58% for two harvest years in a biennial population and 67% in a 1-year study with an annual population. Use of the β-glucosidase marker provided a cross-pollination estimate of 72% in the biennial population. The extent of natural crossing in sweetclover appears to be sufficient to restore normal vigor in the production of varieties synthesized from selected inbred lines.
Application Of The Method Of Lattice Statics To Vacancies In Aluminum, Larry Boyer, John R. Hardy
Application Of The Method Of Lattice Statics To Vacancies In Aluminum, Larry Boyer, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
In this paper the method of lattice statics is applied to the calculation of the atomic displacements about a vacancy in aluminum using a fifth-neighbor force-constant model for the dynamical matrix and the vacancy-host lattice interaction. The strain-field interaction energy between two vacancies is similarly calculated. The main object of this work is to demonstrate the important modifications of earlier results, obtained for a first- and second-neighbor force-constant model, when one uses the fifth-neighbor model designed to give a significantly better fit to the measured phonon dispersion curves. In particular it is demonstrated that the displacements about the vacancy continue …
Estimation Of Heritability Of Threshold Characters, L. Dale Van Vleck
Estimation Of Heritability Of Threshold Characters, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Many traits of dairy cattle such as disease resistance and type breakdown scores may have an underlying distribution of values which are approximately normal but must be measured on a yes or no basis. Theory from literature suggests that heritability estimated from such binomial data is only z2/p(1-p) as large as heritability if it could be measured on the normal scale where z is the ordinate on the normal distribution at the threshold point corresponding to a fraction p of the population having the character. Data were generated from a pseudo-normal distribution to test this theory for estimates …

Place Discrimination In Rail Shipments Of Wheat From Great Plains Origins, Dale G. Anderson, Brian L. Mariska
Place Discrimination In Rail Shipments Of Wheat From Great Plains Origins, Dale G. Anderson, Brian L. Mariska
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine whether shipments of wheat by railroad from Nebraska and other Great Plains States are discriminated against relative to shipments from other wheat producing states and regions. Primary objectives were: 1. To develop a technique for measuring place discrimination. 2. To employ the technique in testing empirical data for evidence of discrimination. 3. To analyze the results and explore implications for geographically- separated wheat shippers. Ratios of railroad revenue/out-of-pocket costs for the years 1958 and 1966 were used to compare the relative cost burden borne by wheat shipments in geographically-separated hauls. Resulting ratios …

Calculation Of Point-Defect Energies And Displacements In Alkali Halides Using The Lattice-Statics Method, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy
Calculation Of Point-Defect Energies And Displacements In Alkali Halides Using The Lattice-Statics Method, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The method of lattice statics, in the zero-order approximation, is used to evaluate the Schottky-pair formation energies and the displacement fields about positive- and negative-ion vacancies for all alkali halide crystals with rock-salt structures. The deformation-dipole model, used extensively in earlier work on the lattice dynamics of these crystals, is employed to describe the host lattice. Long-range Coulomb interactions are included explicitly, and short-range repulsive interactions are described by a simple Born-Mayer potential. Comparison is made with earlier Mott-Littleton-type calculations and very satisfactory agreement is found. Comparison with available experimental values is somewhat less satisfactory, particularly regarding the lithium salts; …

Guidebook To The Late Pliocene And Early Pleistocene Of Nebraska, T. M. Stout, H. M. Degraw, L. G. Tanner, K. O. Stanley, William J. Wayne, J. B. Swinehart
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The interesting geographic and even strategic position of Nebraska between regions of mountain and interior glaciation during the Quaternary was emphasized by A. L. Lugn, Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Nebraska, more than thirty years ago. The earlier studies are summarized in two principal works by Lugn (1935; 1939a; see Selected References), to whom this guidebook is dedicated, much has been learned since and much remains to be recorded concerning the Tertiary and Pleistocene of Nebraska. In this centennial year, commemorating the beginning of a second century of geological instruction at the University of Nebraska, it seems …
Type Appraisal: Ii. Variation In Type Traits Due To Sires, Herds, And Years, H. D. Norman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Type Appraisal: Ii. Variation In Type Traits Due To Sires, Herds, And Years, H. D. Norman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Variance components were estimated from type appraisal data to determine the importance of year, herd, sire, and herd x sire effects upon 49 body, udder, and management traits. Estimates were based on over 16,000 appraisals on daughters of Holstein artificial insemination sires. The variation explained by these effects never exceeded 34% of the total variance. Year effects were almost nonexistent (-2 to 3%). Herd effects were small for all traits except feeding speed, body weight, intensity and persistency of edema, and ketosis, and never exceeded 25%.
Most appraisal traits had low heritabilities. The estimate for milking speed was .23 while …
Type Appraisal: I. Effects Of Age And Stage-Of-Lactation On Type Ratings, H. D. Norman
Type Appraisal: I. Effects Of Age And Stage-Of-Lactation On Type Ratings, H. D. Norman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Dairy cattle type appraisal data were examined to determine whether body and udder conformation and management ratings were affected by age and period of lactation at appraisal. Data were collected from 1961 to 1968 from 188 herds having over 23,000 Holstein type appraisals. The body and udder traits were scored by scheduled appraisers, and the management traits were coded by each dairyman. Some of the 35 original traits were composed of more than one descriptive characteristic and, as a result, 49 renamed traits were derived from these.
A model was selected that considered years and herds as well as cow …

Type Appraisal: Iii. Relationships Of First Lactation Production And Type Traits With Lifetime Performance, H. D. Norman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Phenotypic and genetic correlations were estimated between 48 type appraisal traits and first lactation milk production to determine the importance of appraisal traits in a breeding program from 5,024 records from the New York type appraisal program. Most phenotypic correlations among the type traits were near zero. Depth of udder was the appraisal trait having the highest correlation with first lactation milk (.27) and fat (.23). Multiple correlations of all appraisal traits with first lactation milk and fat were .44 and .40.
Correlations with lifetime variables were calculated from 2,068 records meeting time qualifications. Of the first lactation variables, milk …
Track Theory And Radiation Quality, Robert Katz
Track Theory And Radiation Quality, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Radiation detection and damage data from several physical, chemical, and biological systems have been analyzed by a unified track theory, in which observed effects are attributed to the interaction of secondary electrons with the medium. Gamma-ray dose-response curves are combined with calculations of the spatial dose distribution about an ion's path to yield dose-response curves (survival curves) for heavy ion bombardment, through appropriately defined parameters. Perplexing phenomena associated with high LET radiation are sorted out according to track regime (grain-count or track-width), inactivation mode (gamma-kill or ion-kill), structural complexity (elementary, cellular, multicellular), and end-point. The central problem in assigning a …
Second-Order Pulsations In Polytropes, Norman R. Simon
Second-Order Pulsations In Polytropes, Norman R. Simon
Norman R. Simon Papers
A theory due to Eddington is employed to calculate second-order corrections to the usual linear, quasi-adiabatic pulsational amplitudes. Such corrections are necessary in order to evaluate the pulsational stability of stars in thermal imbalance (dS0/dt ≠ 0). The second-order quantities are calculated, and their properties discussed, for a wide variety of polytropic models. Subsequently, a number of these models are tested for pulsational stability, and the conclusions drawn in an earlier, more preliminary work are re-evaluated on the basis of the results. In particular, it is found that stars in pre-main-sequence contraction are probably stable against …

Angular And Energy Distribution Of Cross Sections For Electron Production By 50-300-Kev-Proton Impacts On N2, O2, Ne, And Ar, J. B. Crooks, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
Cross sections differential in angle and ejection energy for electron production by proton impact on nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and argon have been measured using electrostatic analysis and counting of individual electrons. The range of proton energies was 50-300 keV, the angles ranged from 10° to 160°, and the electron energies were measured from 1.5 to 1057 eV. Integrations over angle and/or electron energy yielded singly differential and total electron production cross sections. Our total cross sections for oxygen fall halfway between previous data of deHeer et al. and Hooper et al., but our argon cross sections agree better with deHeer …
