Studying Abroad At Home? A Virtual International Experience, María Luz García, Sarah Shafi, Camryn Smith, Valentyna Stadnik

Honors in Practice Online Archive

During the period of remote learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, honors programs were forced to innovate new digital possibilities for fulfilling the objectives of an honors education. Learning experiences offered during study abroad programs were among the most difficult to provide in a virtual format. The honors program at Eastern Michigan University has developed the Virtual International Experience (VIE) in response to this need. Even as the 2022–2023 academic year marked a transition back to traditional in-person classes, the VIE offers unique tools for learning skills of cultural analysis and cross-cultural communication, particularly as these occur in remote contexts, …

Relational Peer Review Practices In The Honors Research Methods Classroom: Toward A Scaffolded And Multidisciplinary Model, Holly Riley, Brenna Spurling

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Peer review exercises are an essential part of many educational pedagogy models and have been shown to successfully provide undergraduate students with requisite active learning and critical reflection skills. Teaching the peer review process in an interdisciplinary honors research methods course, however, presents its own set of challenges. As students are exposed to new processes of editorial review, they are also tasked with evaluating material across subjects and discipline areas, making subjective components of editing more difficult. Authors describe a scaffolded model of peer review piloted in an interdisciplinary, upper-level honors research methods and ethics course and provide qualitative analyses …

Preparing To Serve: Sensemaking, Sensegiving, And Diversity Learning In An Alternative Break Program And Connected Honors Course, Chelsea Redger-Marquardt, Jean A. Patterson

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Atypical in Alternative Break (AB) practice, an intentionally connected course was examined to understand students’ perceptions of their semester-long experience. Using qualitative narrative analysis, authors analyze data from 20 AB participants to evaluate student perceptions and experiential outcomes before, during, and after their service trips (one involving the social issue of human environment impact and the other, hunger and homelessness). Pre- and post-trip instruction on the causes and issues related to privilege, oppression, dominant narratives, and potential pitfalls related to immersive service is presented. Reflective blogs are measured against two theoretical frameworks: diversity learning and sensemaking. Results indicate powerful sensemaking …

Background: Traditionally, breeding values are estimated based on phenotypic and pedigree information using the numerator relationship (A) matrix. With the availability of genomic information, genome-wide markers can be included in the estimation of breeding values through genomic kinship. However, the density of genomic information used can impact the cost of implementation. The aim of this study was to compare the rank, accuracy, and bias of estimated breeding values (EBV) for organs [heart (HRT), liver (LIV), gizzard (GIZ), lungs (LUN)] and carcass [breast (BRST), drumstick (DRM) and thigh (THG)] weight traits in a broiler population using pedigree-based BLUP (PBLUP) and …

Effect Of Increasing Corn Silage Inclusion In Finishing Diets Cattle With Or Without Tylosin On Performance And Liver Abscesses, Hannah C. Wilson, Levi J. Mcphillips, Bradley M. Boyd, Andrea K. Watson, Jim C. Macdonald, Galen E. Erickson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A pooled analysis was performed to evaluate whether corn silage fed at 15% or 45% of diet DM impacted liver abscesses prevalence at slaughter in five previous experiments. Cattle fed 15% corn silage had 7.8% abscessed livers compared to 4.1% for cattle fed 45% corn silage when all diets contained tylosin. While improved due to increased corn silage inclusion, the objective of the current finishing study was to determine the impact of silage inclusion in finishing diets with and without tylosin on performance and incidence of abscessed livers in beef cattle. A total of 640 (BW = 334 ± 25 …

Multisensory Experiences In Archaeological Landscapes—Sound, Vision, And Movement In Gis And Virtual Reality, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Kristy Primeau, David E. Witt, Graham Goodwin

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeologists are employing a variety of digital tools to develop new methodological frameworks that combine computational and experiential approaches which is leading to new multisensory research. In this article, we explore vision, sound, and movement at the ancient Maya city of Copan from a multisensory and multiscalar perspective bridging concepts and approaches from different archaeological paradigms. Our methods and interpretations employ theory-inspired variables from proxemics and semiotics to develop a methodological framework that combines computation with sensory perception. Using GIS, 3D, and acoustic tools we create multisensory experiences in VR with spatial sound using an immersive headset (Oculus Rift) and …

Exploring Inequality At Copan, Honduras: A 2d And 3d Geospatial Comparison Of Household Wealth, Heather Richards-Rissetto

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The archaeological site of Copan was a cultural and commercial crossroads at the southeastern Maya frontier. Research indicates that the demographics and sociopolitical circumstances of the city of Copan and its location within a circumscribed pocket (24 km2) of the larger Copan Valley varied through time. These circumstances not only influenced its social, political, and economic interactions, but likely the size, construction, and organization of households, specifically plazuelas. Copan’s plazuelas differ from those located in other Maya regions because they often have smaller house platforms, comprise more than a single patio, and exhibit a larger than normal …

“It’S Loving Yourself For You”: Happiness In Trans And Nonbinary Adults, Elliot Tebbe, Haley L. Bell, Kendal Cassidy, Sonia Lindner, Emily Wilson, Stephanie L. Budge

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Expanding upon the larger body of literature that focuses on adverse mental health concerns among trans and nonbinary (TNB) populations, emerging research has recently begun to investigate positive outcomes and psychological well-being among TNB people. This study contributes to this growing area of research by investigating one subjectively experienced aspect of well-being—happiness—among TNB adults residing in the central Great Plains region of the United States. For this study, 20 TNB adults participated in semistructured interviews where they were asked to reflect on how they experienced happiness generally and in relation to being TNB, and what fostered or impeded their happiness. …

Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches To Examining Construct-Relevant Multidimensionality In Writing Self-Efficacy, Morgan Les Debusk-Lane, Sharon Zumbrunn, Christine Lee Bae, Michael D. Broda, Roger Bruning, Ashlee L. Sjogren Jan 2023

Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches To Examining Construct-Relevant Multidimensionality In Writing Self-Efficacy, Morgan Les Debusk-Lane, Sharon Zumbrunn, Christine Lee Bae, Michael D. Broda, Roger Bruning, Ashlee L. Sjogren

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Self-efficacy is an essential component of students’ motivation and success in writing. There have been great advancements in our theoretical understanding of writing self-efficacy over the past 40 years; however, there is a gap in how we empirically model the multidimensionality of writing self-efficacy. The purpose of the present study was to examine the multidimensionality of writing selfefficacy, and present validity evidence for the adapted Self-Efficacy for Writing Scale (SEWS) through a series of measurement model comparisons and person-centered approaches. Using a sample of 1,466 8th–10th graders, results showed that a bifactor exploratory structural equation model best represented the data, …

Interpretation And Ovidian Myth In Alexander’S Bridge And O Pioneers!, Paul A. Olson Jan 2023

Interpretation And Ovidian Myth In Alexander’S Bridge And O Pioneers!, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This essay describes interpretive strategies widely applied to Ovidian mythic materials during the period of Cather’s early career, especially those operative in Alexander’s Bridge and O Pioneers! The article assumes that widely held conventional interpretations of myths, in this case Ovidian myths, in a specific time and area are part of their semantic content, or iconology, and are tools Cather used in communicating with her audience. The essay then looks at a passage in the 1912 Alexander’s Bridge and two disputed passages in the 1913 O Pioneers! along with extended Bacchic themes in the latter novel that employ conventional Ovidian …

Towards Modeling Human Attention From Eye Movements For Neural Source Code Summarization, Aakash Bansal, Bonita Sharif, Collin Mcmillan Jan 2023

Towards Modeling Human Attention From Eye Movements For Neural Source Code Summarization, Aakash Bansal, Bonita Sharif, Collin Mcmillan

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Neural source code summarization is the task of generating natural language descriptions of source code behavior using neural networks. A fundamental component of most neural models is an attention mechanism. The attention mechanism learns to connect features in source code to specific words to use when generating natural language descriptions. Humans also pay attention to some features in code more than others. This human attention reflects experience and high-level cognition well beyond the capability of any current neural model. In this paper, we use data from published eye-tracking experiments to create a model of this human attention. The model predicts …

Station Aridity In Weather Monitoring Networks: Evidence From The Oklahoma Mesonet, Aseem Singh Jan 2023

Station Aridity In Weather Monitoring Networks: Evidence From The Oklahoma Mesonet, Aseem Singh

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Many weather monitoring networks such as the Oklahoma Mesonet provide estimates of reference evapotranspiration (ETref) to facilitate weather-informed irrigation decisions. However, weather stations that collect the required input data to estimate ETref using the widely applied ASCE standardized ETref equation are not typically installed over a reference surface, defined as a large expanse of dense, well-watered, stress-free grass or alfalfa having a specified height, surface resistance, and albedo. The deviation of actual surface conditions in the surrounding environment of the weather stations from the reference condition creates station aridity effects that can lead to overestimation of …

Dissipated Hysteretic Energy Reconstruction For High-Resolution Seismic Monitoring Of Instrumented Buildings, Milad Roochi, Eric M. Hernández, David V. Rosowsky

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a high-resolution seismic monitoring framework that employs dissipated energy as a feature for damage detection and localization in instrumented building structures. The the methodology consists of (1) implementing a nonlinear state observer to reconstruct the dynamic response at all degrees of freedom (DoF) of a structural model, (2) employing the reconstructed response to estimate element-by-element forces and displacements, and (3) using estimated displacement, forces, and constitutive laws to estimate elementlevel dissipated energy. The main advantages of the proposed energy-based approach are that i) the proposed feature is physically meaningful and correlates well with the level of cyclic …

Peridynamic Simulation Of Elastic Wave Propagation By Applying The Boundary Conditions With The Surface Node Method, Francesco Scabbia, Mirco Zaccariotto, Ugo Galvanetto, Florin Bobaru Jan 2023

Peridynamic Simulation Of Elastic Wave Propagation By Applying The Boundary Conditions With The Surface Node Method, Francesco Scabbia, Mirco Zaccariotto, Ugo Galvanetto, Florin Bobaru

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Peridynamics is a novel nonlocal theory able to deal with discontinuities, such as crack initiation and propagation. Near the boundaries, due to the incomplete nonlocal region, the peridynamic surface effect is present, and its reduction relies on using a very small horizon, which ends up being expensive computationally. Furthermore, the imposition of nonlocal boundary conditions in a local way is often required. The surface node method has been proposed to solve both the aforementioned issues, providing enhanced accuracy near the boundaries of the body. This method has been verified in the cases of quasi-static elastic problems and diffusion problems evolving …

Truth Over Lies: Why Nebraska Must End Deceptive Interrogation Tactics, Jennifer Craven Jan 2023

Truth Over Lies: Why Nebraska Must End Deceptive Interrogation Tactics, Jennifer Craven

Nebraska Law Review

Nearly every law enforcement agency in the United States uses tactics derived from the interrogation method known as the Reid Technique. Police are taught that they can identify guilty suspects through behavior analysis. They can then attempt to get the suspect to confess by using deception—for example, by claiming to have physical evidence that doesn’t exist. These interrogation tactics are not just unnecessary; they have led to wrongful convictions based on false confessions.

Juveniles and individuals with mental illness or disability are the most vulnerable to giving into the pressure of deceptive interrogation and providing false confessions. Most exonerated defendants …

Reigning In John Deere: Time For The Nebraska Unicameral To Enact Agricultural Right To Repair Legislation, Max R. Beal Jan 2023

Reigning In John Deere: Time For The Nebraska Unicameral To Enact Agricultural Right To Repair Legislation, Max R. Beal

Nebraska Law Review

Over the past several decades, manufacturers of agricultural equipment have made it increasingly difficult for agricultural producers to repair their own machines. This difficulty is partially the product of complex software that is itself difficult to repair as well as manufacturer imposed restrictions. These repair restrictions, the focus of this article, are being effected both legally (through contract and copyright law) as well as technologically (through encrypted software). These restrictions are harmful to Nebraska’s agricultural producers as well as its economy. Despite their pledges to the contrary, manufactures have continually failed to provide meaningful redress; notably, the memorandums of understanding …

Farley, Joseph A. Cook, Sarah A. Sonsthagen, George K. Sage, Timothy H. Heaton, Sandra L. Talbot, Charlotte Lindqvist

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

During the Late Pleistocene, major parts of North America were periodically covered by ice sheets. However, there are still questions about whether ice-free refugia were present in the Alexander Archipelago along the Southeast (SE) Alaska coast during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Numerous subfossils have been recovered from caves in SE Alaska, including American black (Ursus americanus) and brown (U. arctos) bears, which today are found in the Alexander Archipelago but are genetically distinct from mainland bear populations. Hence, these bear species offer an ideal system to investigate long-term occupation, potential refugial survival and lineage turnover. Here, we present genetic …

Whooping Crane Nesting Behavior, Parental Care, And Ecology At Wood Buffalo National Park, Andrew J. Caven, Michael J. Forsberg

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

We studied Whooping crane (Grus americana) nesting behavior and movement patterns at Wood Buffalo National Park using an instantaneous scan sampling approach. We also photo-documented important behavioral and ecological observations. Data were collected from 2 to 9 June 2023 from before 3:00 to after 22:00 hours. We completed 88 hours of observation and documented nest swapping about every 3.2 hours. The female incubated/brooded 3.3-10.9% more than the male, and the probability of incubation/brooding declined by 49% after the second chick began pipping and by 99% after both chicks had hatched. The eldest chick was successfully provisioned 16 hours and 33 …

Mortality Of Fledged Whooping Cranes In The Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, Kristin Brightwell, Matt Rabbe, Aaron T. Pearse, Ben Bainbridge, Karen Tyrell, Clayton Derby

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Maintaining accurate mortality records for endangered species is important for guiding management and conservation actions. Mortalities of whooping cranes (Grus americana) in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population (AWBP) are documented in published records from 1950 through 2010. This paper documents publicly available records of known mortalities from 2011 through 2023, and updates historic records from 1950 to 2010. Public sightings and telemetry carcass records were restricted to fledged whooping cranes from the AWBP and stratified by confirmed, suspected, and unknown causes across the annual range (i.e., summer, migration, and winter). This mortality update provides more certainty associated with available carcass data …
