Role Of Seedlings In Recovery Of Midwestern Ranges From Drought, J. E. Weaver, Irene Mueller
Role Of Seedlings In Recovery Of Midwestern Ranges From Drought, J. E. Weaver, Irene Mueller
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
An extensive survey of the degree of deterioration of midwestern ranges was made in 1939 (Weaver and Albertson, '40). Decreases in the basal cover of the grasses from extreme drought, overstocking, and damage by dust were appalling. Basal cover of the native grass had decreased to 1 percent in one-fourth of the ranges examined and it was 21 percent or more in only 16 percent. Little, if any, improvement occurred during the following year; instead certain large areas suffered distinct losses as a result of severe late summer drought. The perennial grasses over large areas in southwestern Kansas, for example, …

Swine Erysipelas. Revised Edition Of Research Bulletin 84, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Because of the more or less frequent occurrence of swine erysipelas on Nebraska farms it seemed proper that information on this subject be made available in the form of a Station publication, especially written to serve as a reference for veterinarians, who naturally are first appealed to when an as yet relatively strange disease appears among a herd of swine. Hence the text is written in a technical form for the sake of precision. In the preparation of the text the literature of countries in which for many years the disease has constituted a permanent problem has been freely consulted. …

Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg
Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
In a previous paper (Borchers and Berg, 1942) we showed that
autoclaving zein with sulfuric acid longer than necessary for complete
hydrolysis causes destruction and racemization; either of
these might account for the failure of such a hydrolysate to
promote growth in young rats when substituted for a hvdrolysate,
prepared by refiuxing, in a diet which produced moderate growth.
It seemed to us that this deterioration in the dietary protein might
well be the result primarily of essential amino acid deficiencies
which could be detected and overcome by appropriate supplementation.
Because threonine is known to be present in zein in …

Berg, Newton E. Whitman
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The amount of tryptophane required for maintenance and growth is small (2). When an excess is supplied to some animals, kynurenic acid is excreted (3) and, under certain conditions, kynurenine also (4). Although these are quantitatively the most important of the known metabolic products of tryptophane, the amounts excreted in extensive tests in the dog and rabbit have usually accounted for less than half, more often for less than a third, of the tryptophane administered (4-6).

A History Of The Churches Of Christ In Morgan County Kentucky, Luke Bolin
Electronic Texts in American Studies
This thesis is the presentation of the history of the Churches of Christ in Morgan County, Kentucky, from their beginning to the present day. Although the term "Church of Christ" predominates in Morgan County, it will be used synonymously with the Christian Church in this thesis. The term "Disciples of Christ" will not be used, although it is the name of the brotherhood as given in the United States Census reports and the name on the Year Book. Morgan County has an area of 413 square miles and a population ot 16,327. It is located in the central eastern part …

Fm 11-20. Signal Corps Field Manual: Organization And Operations In Corps, Army Theater Of Operations, And Ghq, Robert Bolin , Depositor
United States Army: Field Manuals
This manual is a plan for organizing Signal Corps services within the continental US and in theatres of operation. This manual was issued shortly before the US entered World War II. I imagine that the actual organization of Signal Corps services during the war was considerably different from what was shown in this manual. One humorous feature of this manual is the attention given to the “Pigeon Company.”

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The studies of the Squaw formation of the "Chugwater" series were conducted in the vicinity of Lander, Fremont County, Wyoming. Most of the observations were made at Derby Dome which is located in parts of T31N and T32N, R98W fifteen miles southeast of Lander. Others were made at Dallas Dome, nine miles southeast of Lander, and at Squaw Canyon, the type section, about four miles west of Lander. The region is one of moderately high, but not mountainous relief. The elevation at Lander is about 5350 feet, Derby Dome being somewhat less and Squaw Canyon somewhat more. Since it is …
An Inquiry Into The Influence Of Environment On The Incidence Of Poultry Diseases, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney
An Inquiry Into The Influence Of Environment On The Incidence Of Poultry Diseases, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The principal purpose of the investigation reported here was to evaluate, if possible, hygienic measures, and in addition to gather whatever information might become available pertaining to the relation of certain disorders to a given poultry population after its exposure to their specific etiologic factors. The experiments were conducted on a piece of ground upon which poultry had not been maintained for many years, if ever.

Nebraska In Relation To The Problems Of Pleistocene Stratigraphy, Alvin Leonard Lugn
Nebraska In Relation To The Problems Of Pleistocene Stratigraphy, Alvin Leonard Lugn
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Nebraska is so peculiarly situated with respect to Pleistocene deposits of glacial, fluviatile, and eolian origin that it holds the key to the solution of many important problems of the stratigraphy of that period. A brief outline of the Pleistocene geology of Nebraska with several illustrations is followed by a statement of and brief discussion of several of these problems. The main problems touched upon are: age of the Loveland loess, Pleistocene classification, correlation with Europe, the need for a better understanding of what is meant by "glacial" and "interglacial," the problem of glacial and interglacial loess, the duration of …

Personality Development In Farm, Small-Town, And City Children, Leland H. Stott
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
One purpose of the present research project was to contribute further toward an adequate knowledge of the relative merits of urban and rural environments. In this bulletin the three general home settings already mentioned, namely the farm in the open country, the small town (600 to 1,300 in population), and the city, are compared as to their "favorableness" in regard to the personality development of the children who grow up in them. The data for the comparisons are the average scores made by representative samples of young people from each environment on a set of tests and scales designed to …
Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott
Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
In Nebraska, a hustling frontier state in 1887, the legislature hesitated not at all in taking advantage of the provisions of the Hatch Act, and now that fifty years have elapsed since the Station was founded, seventy-five years since the Land Grant College Act was passed and the U. S. Department of Agriculture established, and almost twenty-five years since the Agricultural Extension Service was added, it seems worth while to present a general summary of achievement within the state. The main object will be to show some of the important things that have been learned through the investigations of the …

Nebraska: A Guide To The Cornhusker State (Wpa Guide), Federal Writers’ Project Of The Works Progress Administration For The State Of Nebraska
Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State
The guide to the “Cornhusker State” is full of many interesting photographs of the people and places of Nebraska. They portray a largely agrarian state of hard-working farmers. There is an interesting essay on the unicameral legislature of Nebraska. The guide sticks pretty close to the series format. Eight cities are given detailed descriptions. There are 13 detailed tours of the state.

The Nebraska State Geological Survey And The "Valentine Problem", Alvin Leonard Lugn
The Nebraska State Geological Survey And The "Valentine Problem", Alvin Leonard Lugn
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Nebraska State Geological Survey is primarily concerned with the stratigraphic classification of the Tertiary lithologic units in this state. When the stratigraphic relationships are fully understood, the faunas can be properly and correctly related and named, whether the stratigraphic names or others are used. It should be understood that this survey, in determmmg its acceptance of stratigraphic names on the basis of priority, is making every effort to differentiate names which have been applied in a strictly stratigraphic sense from names which. while they may be older, were applied in only a geographic or faunal sense and have only …

Plato, Prosser Hall Frye
Plato, Prosser Hall Frye
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
It is appropriate that the University of Nebraska should publish, as a grateful memorial, the principal work which Professor Frye left behind him at his death in 1934. And it is especially appropriate because not only the work itself but the very spirit which animated it was engendered here on the spot, in the sparse leisure of his nearly forty years of teaching. For when he came, in the middle nineties, he had a bent toward science and mathematics; and it was here, paradoxically through friendship with a man of science, Louis Trenchard More, that he turned his face to …
