The Taxonomic Value And Variability Of Certain Structures In The Cestode Genus Echinococcus (Rudolphi, 1801) And A Review Of Recognized Species, Robert L. Rausch Nov 1953

The Taxonomic Value And Variability Of Certain Structures In The Cestode Genus Echinococcus (Rudolphi, 1801) And A Review Of Recognized Species, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although cestodes of the genus Echinococcus have been much studied in the past, there is need for an evaluation of these morphological characters used as the basis for species differentiation. The generous cooperation of other investigators in providing necessary foreign material and the results of nearly five years of field work in Alaska make possible such a study. It is the purpose of the paper to evaluate morphological characters used at the species level to differentiate these cestodes, and to review the status of species currently considered valid.

The Indonesian Dispute In The Security Council, Robert L. Munkres Oct 1953

The Indonesian Dispute In The Security Council, Robert L. Munkres

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

When the situation in Indonesia was brought to the attention of the Security Council in January, 1946, and again in July, 1947, a new step was taken in the field of international organization; for the first time an international organizations, the United Nations, was dealing with the problem of a colony seeking to become independent of its mother country. While one may be critical of the procedure and methods which were used by the Security Council, such an attitude must be tempered with the realization of the enormous difficulties which exist when a new type of problem is considered for …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xiii. Disease In The Sea Otter, With Special Reference To Helminth Parasites, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

During the spring of 1951, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the removal of sea otter, Enhydra lutris (L)., from the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, for the purpose of restocking range from which the animals have long been exterminated. The decision to undertake this activity was influenced by the nature of military operations planned for the island later the same year. The capture and removal of the otter were under the supervision of Mr. Robert D. Jones, Biologist, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Heavy losses among the animals shortly after capture made the venture unsuccessful. Many deaths …

Fm 30-16, Technical Intelligence, 29 June 1953, Robert Bolin , Depositor Jun 1953

Fm 30-16, Technical Intelligence, 29 June 1953, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This is the first US Army manual on technical intelligence. The concept of technical intelligence developed during World War II. Technical intelligence doctrine was formalized by a series of army training circulars and other directives. Toward the end of WWII a new army Field Manual 30-15, Examination of Enemy Personnel, Repatriates, Civilians, Documents, and Materiel (June 1954) was issued, but that manual did not reflect the World War II technical intelligence experience or actual army practices. That manual was superceded by Field Manual 30-15, Examination of Personnel and Documents, 27 September 1951 and by this manual.

This manual defines technical …

Application Of The Polaroid-Land Process To Radiographic Inspection Of Wheat, Max Milner, Robert Katz, M. R. Lee, W. B. Pyle Mar 1953

Application Of The Polaroid-Land Process To Radiographic Inspection Of Wheat, Max Milner, Robert Katz, M. R. Lee, W. B. Pyle

Robert Katz Publications

At a time when the technique of X-ray inspection of grains for internal insect infestation, announced almost two years ago, appears to have gained considerable currency in industries handling and processing grain, there exists the general feeling that these industries would be more receptive to any technique which would even further simplify and expedite the radiographic inspection process. To this end Kansas State College and the Picker X-Ray Corporation have engaged in a cooperative study relating to the application of the Picker-Polaroid photographic process to the determination of internal infestation in grain. This process is based on the principle of …

Book Reviews: Merrill On Notice, By Maurice H. Merrill, Kansas City: Vernon Law Book Co., 1952, 3 Vols., Henry H. Foster

Nebraska Law Review

In 1926 Dr. Maurice H. Merrill joined the faculty of the University of Nebraska Law School and took over the course in Agency previously taught by a most eminent authority in that field, Dean Warren A. Seavey. The meticulous scholarship of Dean Seavey undoubtedly was an inspiration to his successor, for in the years that followed Professor Merrill, both in the classroom and in print, demonstrated his complete grasp of the subject of Agency. Within a year Professor Merrill published the concluding section of an important series of articles on Agency commenced by Dean Seavey which had appeared in early …

Streptomyces Leidnematis N. Sp., Growing On Two Species Of Nematodes Of The Cockroach, Glenn L. Hoffman Jan 1953

Streptomyces Leidnematis N. Sp., Growing On Two Species Of Nematodes Of The Cockroach, Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In 1948 Mr. J. R. Wennemark called the writer's attention to a filamentous growth extending from the cuticle of Leidynema appendiculata and Hammerschmidtiella diesingi, oxyurid nematodes found in the intestine of the American roach, Periplaneta americana, which was collected in Iowa City, Iowa. Because of the extreme filamentous accumulation it was thought to be the mycelium of a fungus. Further observation on material from roaches reared in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Detroit, Michigan, showed that the organism was not fungus but a member of the Actinomycetaceae. Slides were sent to Profs. R. S. Breed and H. J. …

Scaphanocephalus Expansus (Crepl.), A Trematode Of The Osprey, In North America [Research Notes], Glenn L. Hoffman Jan 1953

Scaphanocephalus Expansus (Crepl.), A Trematode Of The Osprey, In North America [Research Notes], Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Examination of an osprey, Pandion haliaetus carolinensis furnished by Mr. Melvin Hoffman, Strawberry Point, Iowa, May, 1948, revealed about 30 trematodes which proved to be Scaphanocephalus expanses (Crepl.). This species which was redescribed in detail by Jagerskiold, (1904; Results of the Swedish Zoological Expedetion to Egypt and White Nile 1901 pt. 1) has a very large "expanded" flap-like anterior end and, to my knowledge, resembles no other trematode in that respect. The specimens have been deposited in the United States Nattional Museum Helminth Collection as No. 46437. Mr. Allen McIntosh (personal communication) has informed me that S. expanses has …

Pleistocene Evolution Of The Ohio And Wabash Valleys, William J. Wayne Nov 1952

Pleistocene Evolution Of The Ohio And Wabash Valleys, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Studies of drift thickness and character currently in progress in Indiana indicate changes in drainage that have occurred in Indiana and some adjoining states since the beginning of the Pleistocene epoch. After late Tertiary (Lexington) peneplanation the master-drainage line, the Mahomet-Teays Valley system, became entrenched about 200 feet below its former level before it was ponded by Nebraskan ice and diverted into a new course. During the Parker cycle, which was interrupted by glaciation, the present physiographic features of southern Indiana and their now buried extensions to the north became recognizable. Static rejuvenation then was a major factor in erosion …

Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch Oct 1952

Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

It is the purpose of this paper to review the status of hydatid disease (caused by Echinococcus spp.) in the boreal regions of the world. Its importance has long been recognized in Eurasian countries, but only during recent years have investigators added anything significant to the knowledge of hydatid disease in North America. There is need to disseminate up-to-date information among medical workers in Canada and Alaska, where the disease is endemic in northern regions having a large aboriginal population. Therefore, particular emphasis will be placed on the situation in boreal North America.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xi. Helminth Parasites Of Microtine Rodents--Taxonomic Considerations, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A survey of the helminth parasites of Alaskan rodents has been carried on by the writer since the winter of 1948-1949, as a continuation of an investigation begun in the central United States in 1942. Results of this work indicate that, despite the size of the Territory of Alaska, the survey is complete enough to furnish a reasonable knowledge of the species of helminths parasitic in microtine rodents in Alaska. Information derived from previous investigations serves as a standard against which the completeness of the present work may be judged. In the writer's opinion, the continuation of this work on …

Internal Fissuring Of Wheat Due To Weathering, Max Milner, J. A. Shellenberger, M. R. Lee, Robert Katz Sep 1952

Internal Fissuring Of Wheat Due To Weathering, Max Milner, J. A. Shellenberger, M. R. Lee, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiographic technique developed at this Station for the determination of internal or hidden insect infestation in stored grain has proved to be useful for the detection of other physical anomalies in grains. Practical applications of this sort include the detection of cracked or broken kernels in rough rice (paddy) prior to milling as well as the extent of internal fracturing of certain grains such as maize due to uneven stresses arising from severe drying conditions. This communication deals with a condition of internal fissuring occurring in wheat due to weathering of the ripened grain in the field.

An Example Of The Influence Of Modifying Genes In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel K. Mitchell Aug 1952

An Example Of The Influence Of Modifying Genes In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel K. Mitchell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The influence of genetic modifiers, those genes which affect the expression of other genes, has been demonstrated in a wide variety of organisms. In Neurospora crassa the influence of modifiers is suggested by quantitative differences in growth substance utilization among different reisolates of a mutant strain (Good, Heilbronner, and Mitchell, 1950), and genetic suppression (Houlahan and Mitchell, 1947) may be regarded as an extreme type of modification. In addition, Houlahan and Mitchell (1948) and Mitchell and Mitchell (1952) have demonstrated extensive interactions among genes causing pyrimidine, lysine, and arginine requirements, and Srb (private communication) has found a case in which …

Internal Parasites Of Swine, Benjamin Schwartz Mar 1952

Internal Parasites Of Swine, Benjamin Schwartz

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Hog is generally considered to be a dirty animal. Experience shows, however, that given a chance to graze in a clean pasture and sleep in a dry, clean place, it will do so, thus growing faster and making a better profit for its owner.

This bulletin is written in answer to inquiries, largely from swine owners who find evidence of infestation with parasites in hogs they slaughter on their farms. It is designed to tell them how to identify most of the common parasites and how to prevent such infestations.

In some parts of the United States hogs are …

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller Jan 1952

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

Geology Of The Gunnison Quadrangle, Utah, William N. Gilliland

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The Gunnison Quadrangle is in central Utah approximately 130 miles south of Salt Lake City at the juncture of the Sevier and Sanpete valleys (see fig. 1). The quadrangle is bounded by 39°00' and 39° 15'N. Lat. and III °45' and 112°00' W. Long. Parts of both Sevier and Sanpete counties are included.

The Gunnison Quadrangle is considered important geologically because it lies athwart the juncture of the Sevier and Sanpete valleys and includes portions of three major structural and physiographic units-the Wasatch Plateau, the Gunnison Plateau, and the Valley Mountains. Two of these, the Gunnison Plateau and the Valley …

Process Versus Power: Studies In Modern Culture, Eugene N. Anderson Jan 1951

Process Versus Power: Studies In Modern Culture, Eugene N. Anderson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The essays in this volume are concerned with the culture of a period of profound change. They are intended to serve the practical purpose of estimating what is the present state of our culture, what are its potentialities, and what are the major obstacles to the achievement of a good life. They deal above all with the problem of the character and the enemies of our industrial culture, in the hope of counteracting pessimism caused by desire for immediate perfection.

We live in a period of such cultural diversity as man has never known. Within the past half century or …
