The Specific Status Of The Narrow-Skulled Vole (Subgenus Stenocranius Kashchenko) In North America, Robert L. Rausch Nov 1964

The Specific Status Of The Narrow-Skulled Vole (Subgenus Stenocranius Kashchenko) In North America, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

On morphological and zoogeographical grounds, discussed in the present paper, it is concluded that the narrow-skulled vole in North America, previously designated Microtus (Stenocranius) miurus Osgood, is conspecific with the Eurasian M. (Stenocranius) gregalis Pallas. Fourteen subspecies in Eurasia and 5 in North America are now recognized, but it is probable that the number in Eurasia will be reduced through future investigation. The Eurasian subspecies of this vole comprise two major groups, of which one occupies the tundra zone and the other occurs across central Asia below latitude 60° N; their geographic ranges are largely separate …

This is caused by the fact that we are unable to incorporate inflec¬tions of voice, mood, …

Exposure To Parathion Effect On General Population And Asthmatics, Robert S. Ganelin, Cipriano Cueto Jr., G. Allen Mail Jun 1964

Exposure To Parathion Effect On General Population And Asthmatics, Robert S. Ganelin, Cipriano Cueto Jr., G. Allen Mail

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

There has been much lay and medical concern regarding toxic effects of insecticides on the general population. In addition to direct toxic effects, it is suspected that insecticidal application has deleterious physical effects on persons with respiratory diseases. To evaluate some of these problems, the authors have attempted to quantitate actual absorption, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of intoxication in persons with varying degrees of exposure to parathion. By means of controlled observations, the respiratory effect of application of this compound on persons with bronchial asthma was also measured. The results suggest that the effect of this chemical on the general …

Paleoecology Of Pseudozaphentoides Verticillatus (Barbour) In The Plattsmouth Limestone (Pennsylvanian), Robert Francis Diffendal Jr. Jun 1964

Paleoecology Of Pseudozaphentoides Verticillatus (Barbour) In The Plattsmouth Limestone (Pennsylvanian), Robert Francis Diffendal Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The purpose of this paper is to (1) delineate precisely the exact areal distribution and stratigraphic position within the Plattsmouth limestone member of any occurrence of Pseudozaphrentoides verticillatus (Barbour) and (2) to study the abiotic and biotic aspects of the Plattsmouth limestone in order to offer some inferences as to the paleoecological significance of these occurrences.

The Plattsmouth limestone in Nebraska is exposed in numerous quarries along the sides of the Weeping Water valley and along the Missouri River bluffs from Plattsmouth, Nebraska south to the Queen Hill quarry. Within the Plattsmouth, corals rapidly diminish in number away from the …

Culture And O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Content Of Excised Melilotus Roots, Larry G. Williams, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Excised roots of biennial sweetclover were successfully cultured through repeated transfers on a modified White's medium solidified with agar. Roots also grew well in shaker-agitated liquid cultures over the pH range 4.5 to 7.0. Exposure of the cultures to bright illumination resulted in submaximal growth. No net synthesis of o-hydroxycinnamic acid was observed in the cultured roots.

Closing Remarks: Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference, Maynard W. Cummings Mar 1964

Closing Remarks: Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference, Maynard W. Cummings

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

The Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference is concluded. We hope it has been, in some measure, educational and worthwhile to each one of you. Many of you who are here attended the first conference, which was held in Sacramento two years ago. The obvious spirit displayed at that meeting, a genuine intense interest in absorbing new knowledge presented by the speakers, the warmth of making and renewing acquaintances among fellow workers and the enjoyment of the truly rare opportunity to exchange information in this special field, vertebrate pest control, has, I feel, been reenacted here. For these reasons this second …

Bats: Their Public Health Importance And Control With Special Reference To Trinidad, Arthur M. Greenhall Mar 1964

Bats: Their Public Health Importance And Control With Special Reference To Trinidad, Arthur M. Greenhall

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

This brief review of the public health importance and control of bats is oriented to Trinidad, where, during the past ten years I investigated their zoomedical importance (1). Trinidad is noted for Pawan's classic epidemiological studies of bat rabies (2,3) as well as its bat control program with which I have been associated since its inception in 1934 (4). Further, Trinidad has bat problems, in addition to rabies, which occur in other countries of the world. Although various methods of bat control have been developed in Trinidad, the field is virtually unexplored. Increasingly, bat control is a matter of paramount …

Sound In Vertebrate Pest Control, Hubert Frings Mar 1964

Sound In Vertebrate Pest Control, Hubert Frings

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

The best known vertebrate pests, as the papers presented at this meeting show, are birds and mammals. Other vertebrates, however, may become pests also: sharks, lampreys, toads (they fall into swimming pools), geckos, tortoises and snakes, for example. Without considering them, however, the depredations by birds and mammals alone are so varied that no single method of pest control can ever be all-embracing. Certainly, no one would suggest that acoustical methods would be, but, with further study, acoustical pest control should be much more widely used. I hope to point out here the possibilities and a few realities in bio-acoustics …

The Role Of Pest Control Operators In Vertebrate Pest Control, Philip J. Spear Mar 1964

The Role Of Pest Control Operators In Vertebrate Pest Control, Philip J. Spear

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

The National Pest Control Association, which I represent, accepts for membership those persons or firms which are actively engaged in the performance of structural pest control services for hire to the public at large and which are in sympathy with the purposes of the Association. The pest control operator in this context might be called a commercial pest control operator to distinguish him from those doing similar work but who are employed by governmental agencies or within large commercial organizations. Pest control is a growing industry with a gross annual income of 300-350 million dollars. It is estimated to contain …

Occurrence Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid In Species Of Melilotus And Trigonella, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Mar 1964

Occurrence Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid In Species Of Melilotus And Trigonella, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Leaf samples from available species of Melitotus and the closely related genus, Trigonella, were assayed for free as well as glucosidically bound cis- and trans-o-hydroxycinnamic acids. A qualitative evaluation of β-glucosidase activity also was made. In none of the species were appreciable quantities of the free acids detected. Of the 19 species of Melilotus sampled, 14 contained high levels of the o-hydroxycinnamic acid glucosides, one (M. infesta) was intermediate, and four were essentially free of these glucosides. The intermediate level in M. infesta is unlike that in any other species of Melilotus, …

Louie Louie (The Song)- Fbi File Jan 1964

Louie Louie (The Song)- Fbi File

United States Department of Justice: Publications

In 1963, a rock group named the Kingsmen recorded the song “Louie, Louie.” The popularity of the song and difficulty in discerning the lyrics led some people to suspect the song was obscene. The FBI was asked to investigate whether or not those involved with the song violated laws against the interstate transportation of obscene material. The limited investigation lasted from February to May 1964 and discovered no evidence of obscenity.

Special Text 12-160, Effective Army Writing, 1964, Us Army Adjutant General School, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Army: Training Documents

This a useful manual for writing of all types. The guide to research in an appendix is sensible. The “watchlist” is a good guide to avoiding Pentagonese. The author of this text had a sense of humor.

One unusual feature of the text is that the manual contains instructions for writing a staff study and a sample of a model staff study.

The Nebraska Uniform Commercial Code: An Introduction And Articles 1 And 2, William B. Davenport Jan 1964

The Nebraska Uniform Commercial Code: An Introduction And Articles 1 And 2, William B. Davenport

Nebraska Law Review

On July 5, 1963, the development of commercial law in Nebraska received a gigantic forward thrust—a thrust necessary to bring that development even with the jet age. On that date Governor Frank Morrison approved Legislative Bill No. 49 of the 73rd Session of the Nebraska Legislature enacting the Uniform Commercial Code. In one sweep of the pen, Nebraska had law (or would, in September 1965, have law) in areas where none has existed previously—either in statutory or decisional form, law which it had taken even the most important commercial states and the British common law jurisdictions hundreds of years to …

The Development In Vitro And In Vivo Of Fusion Of The Palatal Processes Of Rat Embryos, Thomas Moriarty, Sam Weinstein, R. D. Gibson Sep 1963

The Development In Vitro And In Vivo Of Fusion Of The Palatal Processes Of Rat Embryos, Thomas Moriarty, Sam Weinstein, R. D. Gibson

College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications

The congenital anomaly of cleft palate can now be reproduced by a variety of teratogenetic agents in a number of laboratory animals (Kalter & Warkany, 1959). Through the use of the induced cleft palate numerous studies have been directed toward detecting the developmental mishaps which create this defect. The work of Fraser et al. (1957) suggested that various positional factors of the developing palatal and facial structures may be the underlying cause for failure of palatal closure in mouse embryos. Walker & Fraser (1956) observed elastic fibers among the palatal processes of mouse embryos which they suggested might impart a …

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch Jun 1963

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

1. Hydatid cysts are found in more than 30 per cent of all cattle, sheep and goats in Kenya, but the disease is prevalent in man only in the semi-desert area of Turkana. Up to the time of the present investigation the life-cycle of the parasite in East Africa had not been studied, but it was suggested that wild carnivores, such as hyenas and jackals, might be the main hosts of the adult worms.

2. One hundred and forty-three carnivores, representing 23 species, have been examined. Echinococcus adults were found in 27 out of 43 domestic dogs (Canis familiaris …

Alveolar Hydatid Disease Of The Liver: Rationale And Technics Of Surgical Treatment, John T. West, F. J. Hillman, Robert L. Rausch Apr 1963

Alveolar Hydatid Disease Of The Liver: Rationale And Technics Of Surgical Treatment, John T. West, F. J. Hillman, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cestodes of the genus Echinococcus cause two distinct diseases: the well-known cystic hydatid disease found in stock-raising areas, caused by E. granulosus, and the more rare alveolar hydatid disease, which is limited to the northern hemisphere and is caused by the biologically and morphologically distinct E. multilocularis.

Eight cases of alveolar hydatid disease of the liver are reported from Alaska, including three patients who underwent hemihepatectomy for advanced lesions. Radical resection is concluded to be the only rational treatment for this otherwise progressive and fatal disease.

The Economics Of Classifying Farmland Between Alternative Uses, Roger H. Willsie Mar 1963

The Economics Of Classifying Farmland Between Alternative Uses, Roger H. Willsie

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

At present some farm programs are aimed at reducing the acreage of land used for crop production. These programs have the objectives of reducing quantities of certain farm commodities and conserving land resources. By shifting land from the production of certain farm commodities to other commodities or to grass, total farm income may be raised and the costs of farm price support and storage programs reduced. In programs to shift land use a classification of land based on economic criteria would be useful. The primary concern of this study was with methods for identifying the economic margin between land uses; …

The Origins Of Thomas Jefferson's Anti-Clericalism, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1963

The Origins Of Thomas Jefferson's Anti-Clericalism, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Cannibals - mountebanks - charlatans - pious and whining hypocrites - necromancers - pseudo-Christians - mystery mongers. These are among the epithets which Thomas Jefferson applied to the clergy of the Protestant denominations and of the Roman Catholic Church as well. It was they who "perverted" the principles of Jesus "into an engine for enslaving mankind"; it was the Christian "priesthood" who had turned organized religion into a "mere contrivance to filch wealth and power" for themselves; they were the ones who throughout history had persecuted rational men for refusing to swallow "their impious heresies." This attitude of Jefferson, with …

Personal Health : Extension Circular 10-01-63

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

Because health is affected by habits, this unit of the 4-H project is devoted to the study of personal health habits. You are expected to study your habits, determine ways for improvement and to correct some of your faults. Usually, it is advisable to change only a few faults at a time; rather than all of them at once. If you continuously work toward self improvement, you will be surprised at how fast your health habits improve.

Energy And Angular Distribution Of Electrons Ejected From Hydrogen And Helium Gas By Protons, M. Eugene Rudd, Theodore Jorgensen Jr. Jan 1963

Energy And Angular Distribution Of Electrons Ejected From Hydrogen And Helium Gas By Protons, M. Eugene Rudd, Theodore Jorgensen Jr.

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Differential cross sections for ejection of secondary electrons of various energies at various angles were measured for hydrogen gas bombarded by 100-keV protons and for helium gas bombarded by 50-, 100-, and 150-keV protons. The range of angles investigated was 10° to 160° and the range of electron energies was 1 to 500 eV. A unique fixed-port, double-walled scattering chamber was used. Electrons were counted by an electron multiplier after passing through a 127° electrostatic analyzer. The efficiency of the detector was determined by replacing the analyzer and multiplier by a Faraday cup and making absolute measurements of cross sections …
