Relevance And Higher Education: Proceedings Of The Third Annual Meeting Of The National Collegiate Honors Council, 1968, Walter D. Weir
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs
The papers in this volume were presented at the third annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington, October 18-20, 1968. The papers indicate our focus on the problems of the relevance of curricula to learning and the relevance of higher education to the world. Black and white students alike urged us to make our programs, our curricula, and our concerns more relevant to the moral and social issues of our time, more relevant to a truly liberal education.

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne
Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Urban land uses are rapidly converting open land into intensively used land. Generally, in planning those uses, a comprehensive study has included everything except an evaluation of the land in three dimensions. Geologists are eminently well equipped to supply the missing data, but they must also be aware of the needs of the urban community and the kinds of information needed by planners if they are to write reports usable by planners. Urban and environmental geology is a newly expanding field in the use of geologic data to help solve some urban problems in the planning stage. It is likely …

Criminal Law—Defendant's Perjury And Its Effect On The Criminal Trial—Mckissick V. United States, 379 F.2d 754 (5th Cir. 1967), D. Steven Leininger
Nebraska Law Review
The court has given the criminal defendant a procedural weapon in the form of perjury with which he can cause an endless number of mistrials. The McKissick court apparently felt compelled to do this for it said: "[T]he alternatives to mistrial were themselves fraught with difficulties and possible errors." The purpose of this Note is to examine these "alternatives" and attempt to develop from them an approach for avoiding the probable effect of this decision. There are three areas of judgment in which a different decision could have avoided a mistrial. These are: (1) the requirement that an attorney disclose …
Faculty Promotions: An Analysis Of Central Administrative Control, Fred Luthans
Faculty Promotions: An Analysis Of Central Administrative Control, Fred Luthans
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Very little significant research has been conducted on the university as an organized activity. This study helps to fill solve of this void. The concept of central administrative control is used as a framework to empirically analyze faculty promotion policies and practices. The universities of today are recognized as extremely important organizations in our society. Faculty members conduct significant research which advances knowledge in their particular fields of study. For instance, in the management departments of our universities, professors devote most of their research efforts to developing knowledge and insights into industrial organizations. In a few cases these professors have …
Themes And Dramatic Forms In The Plays Of Armand Salacrou, Juris Silenieks
Themes And Dramatic Forms In The Plays Of Armand Salacrou, Juris Silenieks
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Armand Salacrou is generally recognized to be one of the outstanding French playwrights whose literary careers began between the two World Wars. Salacrou has written about thirty plays. Many of them have been produced at the leading theatrical centers in Europe, and some have earned success and fame for the author on African and Asian stages. Unlike the other distinguished dramatists of his generation such as Giraudoux, Anouilh, Sartre, and Cocteau, Salacrou's name has remained almost unknown to the theater audiences in this country. A number of his plays have been published in Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, and Japanese translations, …
Annotated Checklist Of Bats From South Dakota, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
Annotated Checklist Of Bats From South Dakota, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Excepting the generalized accounts of Over and Churchill (1945), no attempt has been made previously to summarize the distribution of bats in South Dakota. In 1960, 1961, and again in 1965, field parties from the Museum of Natural History of The University of Kansas collected mammals in that state. Bats obtained by these parties, together with those on deposit in other institutions and the few specimens earlier reported from South Dakota by other workers (see cited literature), form the basis of the present report. Eleven species are here treated; two of these are represented in the state by two subspecies. …

Field Manual Fm 5-30, Engineer Intelligence, September 1967 (With Change 1, 1 October 1971), Robert Bolin , Depositor
United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence
(1) According to FM 21-205, 18 Jan 1944, "Field Manuals constitute the primary means of promulgating the basic doctrines of military training and operations."
(2) This manual supersedes FM 5-30, 1959.
(3) This manual is much different from the manual it superseded because before 1962 Engineer Intelligence was defined as intelligence about foreign military equipment and on military organizations analogous to the US Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, two civil organizations within the Corps of Engineers, the Board of engineers for Rivers and Harbors and the Beach Erosion Board, produced intelligence about foreign harbors and potential landing beaches of …
Migration Of The Army Cutworm, Chorizagrotis Auxiliaris (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). I. Evidence For A Migration, Kenneth P. Pruess
Migration Of The Army Cutworm, Chorizagrotis Auxiliaris (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). I. Evidence For A Migration, Kenneth P. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Indirect evidence is presented to support the conclusion that the army cutworm, Chorizagrotis auxiliaris (Grote), migrates from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains during the spring and the same individuals return to the Plains in the fall. Spring activity occurs progressively later from east to west, the delay being greater than that caused by emergence but commensurate with flight potential of the moth. Flight is predominately from east to west and a constant turnover of moths occurs at all locations on the Plains. Seasonal occurrence in the mountains coincides with the period of inactivity on the Plains, during which …

Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly
Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly
Robert G. Fuller Publications
The measured electrical conductivity of pure RbCl is separated into the usual anion and cation contributions with activation energies of 2.55 and 1.58 eV, respectively. By comparison with corresponding results for KC1 and NaCl it is found that the alkali-chloride anion and cation activation energies differ most for nearly equal anion and cation radii. We conclude from this anomalous trend that an extension of conventional theory is required.
F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller
F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller
Robert G. Fuller Publications
This Letter reports an investigation using pulsed electron irradiation to determine if the low efficiency of F-band coloration in calcium fluoride is caused by the instability of the F center. No transient F centers were seen in times as short as 2 x 10-7 sec. It is concluded that the inherent efficiency of F-band coloration in CaF2 is small compared with similar processes in alkali halides and a possible reason for this is discussed. Calcium fluoride has been extensively studied and is found to be more difficult to color than alkali halides and to have absorption …

Opening Remarks - Third Vertebrate Pest Conference, Maynard W. Cummings
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
To open this Third Vertebrate Pest Conference is a real privilege. It is a pleasure to welcome all of you in attendance, and I know there are others who would like to be meeting with us, but, for one reason or another cannot be. However, we can serve them by taking back the results of discussion and by making available the printed transactions of what is said here. It has been the interest and demand for the proceedings of the two previous conferen- ces which, along with personal contacts many of you have with the sponsoring committee, have gauged the …
Aircraft As A Means Of Baiting Ground Squirrels, Rex E. Marsh
Aircraft As A Means Of Baiting Ground Squirrels, Rex E. Marsh
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
Aircraft might soon become an important tool for baiting ground squirrels (Citellus beecheyi beecheyi and C. b. fisheri) on California rangeland. Until recently, almost all squirrel control has been conducted by the hand-baiting method, with grain bait scattered from horseback in spoon-size amounts near squirrel burrows. Ground squirrels are considered a major pest of rangeland in many parts of the West. They not only compete with livestock for forage but also are responsible for substantial losses to cereal and other crops. The magnitude of the problem is exemplified by the fact that, in California alone, over 6,000,000 gross acres of …
The Current Status Of Wild Animal Rabies In California, George L. Humphrey
The Current Status Of Wild Animal Rabies In California, George L. Humphrey
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
During the 15-years 1952-1966, a total of 3504 cases of animal rabies were reported in California, an average of over 230 cases annually (Table 1). Of these 3504 cases, 2255 or nearly 65 percent were reported in wildlife species. An estimate sometimes used is that for every reported or recognized case of wild animal rabies, 10 cases probably occurred without recognition. Using the foregoing "rule-of-thumb", it can be hypothesized that during the 15-years 1952-1966, an estimated 22,600 or more cases of wildlife rabies occurred in California. The addition of the over 1200 cases of rabies reported in domestic animals during …
Review Of Animal Repellents, Jack F. Welch
Review Of Animal Repellents, Jack F. Welch
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
A review of the literature on this subject reveals there is considerable confusion regarding the meaning of the word "repellent" as it relates to animal control. Some people make a liberal interpretation and include any material or device that will alter the pattern of activity of an animal through response to sight, sound, taste, odor, or touch. Although such an interpretation may be valid, for this paper I would like to confine my discussion to "chemical repellents" -- materials that, when applied to seeds, plants, or other materials being damaged by animals, will reduce depredation through taste, odor, or possibly …
Blackbird Behavior, Gordon W. Boudreau
Blackbird Behavior, Gordon W. Boudreau
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
A knowledge and understanding of a bird's habits and behavior patterns is prerequisite to any intelligent approach toward solving problems created by that species. This also applies to associated species commonly observed with it. Since my subject today is blackbirds I will confine my observations to species in this group, particularly red-winged blackbirds. The Red-Winged Blackbird, (Agelaius phoeniceus) is numerically and economically the most important. Several sub-species or races are recognized and in California the most important of these is the Bi-colored Blackbird, (A. p. californica). The ranges of subspecies commonly overlap, particularly in the Southeast, and field identification is …
Control Of Nuisance Pests In Suburbia, Howard A. Merrill
Control Of Nuisance Pests In Suburbia, Howard A. Merrill
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
To a rancher or high-rise apartment dweller, problems with vertebrate pests in suburbia may seem insignificant. But when one stops to consider that last year over 2 million acres of farmland were converted into urban and industrial use, then it takes a different perspective. Some mammals are protected—game animals and fur bearers are usually protected by Fish and Game Departments. Cottontail rabbits, deer, and tree squirrels are examples of game animals, and muskrats, foxes, badgers, and raccoons are examples of fur bearers. In California a number of birds and mammals have no protection; these are English sparrows, American or black-billed …
Birds And Airports, Erwin W. Pearson
Birds And Airports, Erwin W. Pearson
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
For all practical purposes, research in this country on the problem of bird hazards to aircraft began in 1960 with the crash of an Electra turboprop that carried 62 people to their deaths and was attributed to ingestion of starlings into the engines. In this paper I intend to review the problem and present some of the answers found by investigators in this country and, to lesser extent, abroad. The discussion will be roughly divided into two parts: 1) what: causes the problem, when, and where; and 2) what has been and is being done at airfields to reduce it. …
Biotelemetry — Its Use In Vertebrate Control Studies, Wendell E. Dodge
Biotelemetry — Its Use In Vertebrate Control Studies, Wendell E. Dodge
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
Accurate evaluation of rodent control techniques has always been a laborious undertaking. It generally involves tedious pre- and post-treatment censusing by trapping, marking, track counts, reduction of activity, etc., and results, at best, must necessarily contain a significant amount of speculation by the investigator. The biologist conducting such studies has been constantly harassed by uncontrollable parameters such as trap response, immigration, emigration, predation, disease, and many others. Thus, there has been a pressing need of a more definitive technique for evaluating rodent control trials. During the last decade, a new tool called biotelemetry has become available to the wildlife biologist. …
Biological Control Of Vertebrate Pests, Walter E. Howard
Biological Control Of Vertebrate Pests, Walter E. Howard
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
This paper briefly introduces the subject of vertebrate pest control, integrates and interprets some important ecological principles of control methodology, and intercalates these discussions with analysis of the biological backlashes and other ecological interactions that may be created whenever troublesome species of vertebrates are controlled by biological means. Insight in this area must be deepened if we are to fulfill our primary objective of learning how to manage a healthy environment in perpetuity. One important merit of biocontrol is that most people accept carefully planned ecological dislocations in nature more readily than they do the repugnant and hazardous aspects of …

Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark
Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
To fulfill the primary objective of the Vector-Borne Disease Section of NCDC to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases - a series of courses on vertebrates and arthropods and their role as reservoirs, vectors, and disease-causing agents is presented. Literature is prepared and a museum is maintained. One of these courses, Epizootic Ecology, illustrates some of the aspects dealt with in these courses. Definitions and concepts are presented followed by a brief review of principles of epidemiology and ecology. Specific examples constitute the bulk of the course. One of these, tularemia, is especially useful for the purposes of this course …

Agriculture in Nebraska (E. S. Wallace)
In the decade from 1954 to 1964 in Nebraska the number of farms dropped more than a fifth and their average size grew by more than a fourth; the total value of farm land and buildings and the value per acre rose by more than 50%, and the value per farm by more than 90%; irrigated acreage increased 85%; the value of farm products sold rose more than 50%, the average sales per farm nearly doubled, and the importance of livestock relative to crops in farm income continued to increase; the exodus from the …

Elephant Teeth From The Atlantic Continental Shelf, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., K. O. Emery, H. B. S. Cooke, Donald J. P. Swift
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, and relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.

Multiple Sources of Assistance are Available to Exporters (Dorothy Switzer)
When Nebraska manufacturers seek to protect or expand their stake in the world market, they need both expert advise and experienced assistance in handling the multiple negotiations involved in doing business overseas. Although many exporters are finding it advantageous to employ trade specialists, they also continue to place considerable reliance on their home state financial institutions. both directly and through their connections at the point of export. Nebraska banks are able to expedite foreign financial transactions and to provide other essential services such as letters of introduction to foreign businessmen …

The Future of the Plains (James Allcott)
The logical starting point for a regional analysis of this kind is with population, because people are both the basic ingredient and the object of economic growth. The six states selected for this study - Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas - have grown. and will continue to grow, less rapidly than the rest of the nation. A significant point to note. however, is that the rate of growth is increasing. while the rate of growth for the nation as a whole is not. During the 1950's, they grew at about 0.6 …

In June of 1966, the Supreme Court of the United States handed down the decision in the case of Schmerber v. California. The case involved a criminal conviction for driving an automobile while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. While at the hospital undergoing treatment for injuries resulting from the accident, the defendant was arrested by a police officer, and under the direction of the officer, a physician at the hospital drew a blood sample from the body of the defendant. The result of the blood analysis, which indicated that the petitioner was intoxicated, was admitted in evidence at …
