Thermal, Turbidity, And Ph Conditions Of The Upper White River: Sioux And Dawes Counties, Nebraska., Steve Cassells Jan 1972

Thermal, Turbidity, And Ph Conditions Of The Upper White River: Sioux And Dawes Counties, Nebraska., Steve Cassells

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Research indicates inverse correlations between pH and turbidity when the sediment is primarily of an organic nature. Siliceous sediment does not follow the same curve. Definite influences of cultivated lands on water turbidity are shown in the lower portion of the study area. Temperatures vary considerably within short distances, with the cause only speculative at this time. The study gives basis for the inferences on preferred habitats of trout and catfish.

Field Tests Of Insecticides Against Plagiotrochus Cornigerus, E. E. Burgess, H. E. Williams, R. E. Wilkinson, E. A. Heinrichs Jan 1972

Field Tests Of Insecticides Against Plagiotrochus Cornigerus, E. E. Burgess, H. E. Williams, R. E. Wilkinson, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Pin oaks, Quercus palustris Muenchhausen, are one of the important shade trees in west Tennessee. The horned oak-gall wasp, Plagiotrochus cornigerus Osten Sacken, causes a deformation of the twigs and leaves of the tree. In 1965, K. E. Stewart, an entomologist at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, injected pin oaks with systemic insecticides to evaluate their effectiveness in controlling the leaf gall and the stem gall caused by the horned oak-gall wasp. He found oxydemeton-methyl ec at a rate of 25 g AI/in. diameter and technical demeton at a rate of 3 g AI/in. diameter were the best materials …

Observation Of A Broad Resonance In The 23S Excitation Of Helium By Electron Impact, G. B. Crooks, R. D. Dubois, D. E. Golden, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1972

Observation Of A Broad Resonance In The 23S Excitation Of Helium By Electron Impact, G. B. Crooks, R. D. Dubois, D. E. Golden, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

We have observed a broad P-wave resonance at about 50 eV primary energy in the angular distribution of electrons scattered after excitation of the 23S state of helium. The resonance has a width of about 15 eV and affects the differential excitation cross section by more than 3 orders of magnitude. It is suggested that this resonance is associated with the temporary formation of triply excited states of the negative helium ion.

The Face Of Malone An Area Of Transition In Lincoln, Nebraska, David A. Montgomery, Frank A. Pratt, Rodney W. Schullig, Boniface N. Madubom, Darshan S. Kang

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This report concerns Malone, a problem area of Lincoln, Nebraska, that is undergoing considerable change as a result of external influences from the city and the university. In 1971, a graduate Seminar in Urban Geography devoted a semester to the spatial aspects of blight In cities and as a part of this course prepared short reports on specific aspects of Lincoln's example of a blighted zone. The point of departure for the field work was the conceptual framework of the transition zone as it was developed by Burgess in the 1920's and refined by others at a later time, especially …

Considerations Of Professional Responsibility In Probate Matters, William L. Killion Jan 1972

Considerations Of Professional Responsibility In Probate Matters, William L. Killion

Nebraska Law Review

The legal profession, contrary to the belief of some skeptics, is generally quite concerned with the rigorous observation of ethical standards. All too often, however, the ethical standard becomes hidden in a maze of technical legal problems. Probate, probably more than any other area of practice, abounds in ethical pitfalls. Since such a large portion of probate is thought of as nonadversarial, conflicts of interest often pass unnoticed. Recognizing this recurrence of ethical problems, this comment is both a presentation of some of the more salient problems of professional responsibility arising in probate matters and a critical analysis of the …

The Identification And Differentation Of Selected Professional Competencies For Agricultural Educators, Ronald E. Stoller Dec 1971

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Purpose of the Study The primary purpose of the study was to determine whether a common core of professional competancies for agricultural educators could be identified. The study was also designed to identify and differentiate professional competencies most important for individual respondent groups. Assumption It Was assumed that all agricultural educators were proficient in the necessary technical agricultural subject matter such as, agronomy, animal science, to perform their job. Only selected professional competencies as they relate to the pedagogy for teaching were studied, Procedure A study questiormaire containing 147 professional cOl'lpetencies was developed and tested with the aid of a …

Melvin Randolph Gilmore, Incipient Cultural Ecologist: A Biographic Analysis, David L. Erickson Dec 1971

Melvin Randolph Gilmore, Incipient Cultural Ecologist: A Biographic Analysis, David L. Erickson

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This thesis will be a study in microcosm of Melvin R. Gilmore’s Nebraska research. The study analyzes his ethnobiological field work and writings in terms of biographic factors.Gilmore’s ethnobiological research manifests both bioecological and cultural ecological rationales. The thesis shows that Gilmore’s pioneering work in ethnobiology, together with studies by Harrington and others, laid the groundwork for modern cultural ecology as practiced by Julian Steward and others. The author of the thesis used original documents from the Nebraska State Historical Society in his research.

While in Nebraska Gilmore developed an interest in ethnobiology. His initial ethnobotanical field work was related …

The Biostratigraphy Of The Delaware Limestone (Middle Devonian) Of Southwestern Ontario, Robert F. Diffendal Oct 1971

The Biostratigraphy Of The Delaware Limestone (Middle Devonian) Of Southwestern Ontario, Robert F. Diffendal

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Delaware Limestone of Middle Devonian age crops out along two belts in southwestern Ontario. All but one of the major outcrops studied occur in the easternmost of these belts.

Examination of thin-sections and polished slabs of 254 samples collected at vertical intervals of one foot from 19 localities has led to delineation of four major microfacies within the formation. The basal quartzose microfacies, characteristically containing well-rounded, quartz sand, is present in the basal two to four feet of the formation. In the northwestern part of the eastern outcrop belt the predominant microfacies above the basal quartzose microfacies is partially …

Opinions Of School Administrators Concerning Selected Aspects Of The Program Of Vocational Agriculture In Nebraska, Larry L. Viterna

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

A lack of available evidence in Nebraska to formulate decisions based on the opinions of school administrators, regarding programs in agricultural education at the high school level, prompted the investigator to propose a study which was designed to obtain the opinions of high school administrators regarding selected aspects of the program of vocational agriculture in Nebraska.Additionally the study was designed to then present those opinions in a form that would be considered useful to a variety of state and local supervisors of vocational agriculture programs as well as teachers and educators. This study was limited to superintendents and principals in the …

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesus De La Lamadrid May 1971

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesus De La Lamadrid

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Let G be a locally compact abelian group. For a (generally unbounded) measure μ on G we shall say that μ is transformable if there is a measure μˆ on the character group Γ of G such that, for every ƒЄK(G), the space of continuous functions with compact support on G,ƒЄL2(μ) and (1) ∫Gƒ**ƒ(x) dμ(x) = ∫r|∫(γ-1)|2dμ(γ). The resulting "Fourier transformation” μ→μˆ contains the classical theory and leads to generalizations of a variety of classical results, including the Plancherel theorem and the Poisson summation …

The Somatic Chromosomes Of Some North American Marmots (Sciuridae), With Remarks On The Relationships Of Marmota Browerii Hall And Gilmore, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Karyotypes are defined for two nearctic species of marmots, Marmota olympus (2n = 40) and M. vancouverensis (2n = 42), and supplemental information is included on the karyotypes of M. flaviventris, M. monax ochracea, and M. marmota. The six North American species of Marmota (NF = 66) comprise a distinct group as compared with the middle Asian species (NF = 70) for which the karyotypes are known. Karyologic findings and zoogeographic evidence based upon the distribution of two nearctic species of host-specific cestodes indicate that M. broweri, in northern Alaska, is a pre-Würm relict. Its affinities …

Fraudulent Direct Sales Schemes In The Home Improvement Industry Under Nebraska Law, Richard Wegener Jan 1971

Fraudulent Direct Sales Schemes In The Home Improvement Industry Under Nebraska Law, Richard Wegener

Nebraska Law Review

Nebraska has recently been confronted with two cases involving deceptive sales practices in a classic direct selling context. In Central Construction Co. v. Osbahr and Dembowski v. Central Construction Co., the Nebraska Supreme Court came to seemingly conflicting conclusions in two cases that presented strikingly similar factual situations involving deceptive direct sales practices. The purpose of the following analysis is to outline prior Nebraska law in this area, to investigate the present status of Nebraska law in this area, and to compare the decisions against the backdrop of the Federal Trade Commission Act, the Nebraska Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices …

Franchise Full Disclosure, Terry D. Sattler Jan 1971

Franchise Full Disclosure, Terry D. Sattler

Nebraska Law Review

Although there is no "typical" franchise contract, the franchise purchaser, or franchisee, is usually required to pay a fee for the privilege of opening a franchise outlet, and must then rely upon the franchise seller, the franchisor, to provide guidance and support in the operation of the enterprise. If the venture fails, the franchisee may lose his entire investment. In the past, there have been attempts to regulate substantive provisions of franchise agreements in order to reduce the instances of investment loss by franchisees. The focus of recent concern over franchising practices has not involved the objection to particular contract …

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesús Gil De Lamadrid Jan 1971

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesús Gil De Lamadrid

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The resulting "Fourier transformation" µ—µ^ contains the classical theory and leads to generalizations of a variety of classical results, including the Plancherel theorem and the Poisson summation formula. The present work can also be regarded as a sort of theory of tempered distributions on general locally compact abelian groups. It is true that Bruhat [ l l ] introduced a direct generalization to this setting of the theory of Schwartz [10], but, to the best of our knowledge, a detailed study of the Fourier transform has not been carried out. In a forthcoming exposition we shall describe the precise relation …
