The "Authentic" Witness: The Editor Speaks For The Document, Wayne Cutler Jan 1982

The "Authentic" Witness: The Editor Speaks For The Document, Wayne Cutler

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

For several years now literary and historical editors have been "talking shop" in their attempt to isolate what, if anything, they share of a common editorial method. Regrettably, the more we have talked the more defensive our thinking has become. David J. Nordloh's essay in the May 1980 issue of the ADE Newsletter, "The 'Perfect' Text: The Editor Speaks for the Author," demonstrated to my chagrin the occasional depths of our mutual misunderstandings. Hoping that subsequent commentary would obviate the need for my making a self-pleading rejoinder, I have postponed the present answer for some eighteen months. The ADE Newsletter …

The Power Of Positivist Babble Or, Two Anecdotes Declining Toward A Conclusion: Review Of Literary & Historical Editing. Edited And With Introductions By George L. Vogt And John Bush Jones., Jon Kukla

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The seven components of Literary & Historical Editing are three introductory pieces (two by the editors and the third, a survey of modern literary and historical editions, by James Thorpe), essays by George C. Rogers, Jr., and G. Thomas Tanselle on textual editing, and two discussions of annotation. Martin C. Battestin's suggestions about literary annotation-which have also been published in volume 34 of Studies in Bibliography (1981)struck me as sensible and clear, especially if one may accept at face value his disclaimers: that he is not"trying to do for the literary annotator what Greg has done for the textual editor,» …

The Library Of America, Jo Ann Boydston Jan 1982

The Library Of America, Jo Ann Boydston

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The spring 1982 publication of the first four volumes of The Library of America (Hawthorne, Melville, Stowe, Whitman) inaugurated a series that is expected to produce and keep permanently in print more than one hundred volumes. Four more volumes (Mark Twain, Howells, and two of Jack London) will have appeared by the time this account is published. These volumes are the initial concrete expression of a movement dating from the late 1940s and early 1950s to collect, preserve, publish, and disseminate widely the best texts of classic American writings.

Review Of Selected Works Of Jawaharlal Nehru: An Introduction, Lakshman Dewani Jan 1982

Review Of Selected Works Of Jawaharlal Nehru: An Introduction, Lakshman Dewani

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The publication of the Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru was undertaken by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in New Delhi in 1968. The object was to help build a corpus of Nehru's writings and speeches on a variety of subjects which span over a period of fifty years of active political life of one of this century's foremost public leaders and statesmen. It was a stupendous task to collect his writings from various sources, ranging from government archives to private individuals. The task was, however, made less difficult by the availability of a large number of Nehru's letters and other …

Plains Landscapes And Changing Visions, John Milton Jan 1982

Plains Landscapes And Changing Visions, John Milton

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The plains landscape has always been a dominant factor in the lives of those people who confront it daily. Our recognition of pioneer nineteenth-century landscapes is a fusion in the mind of what we remember from early reports and visual images and our own personal vision of the land as it looks today. That concept of the pioneer landscape remains in our minds even as we respond to the contemporary landscape or through the imagination create our own. One reason, then, that pioneer landscapes are still important to us is that they have influenced our perceptions of the plains in …

Impacts Of Technology On U.S. Cropland And Rangeland Productivity, Office Of Technology Assessment Jan 1982

Impacts Of Technology On U.S. Cropland And Rangeland Productivity, Office Of Technology Assessment

Congressional Research Service Reports

This Nation's impressive agricultural success is the product of many factors: abundant resources of land and water, a favorable climate, and a history of resourceful farmers and technological innovation. We meet not only our own needs but supply a substantial portion of the agricultural products used elsewhere in the world. As demand increases, so must agricultural productivity. Part of the necessary growth may come from farming additional acreage. But most of the increase will depend on intensifying production with improved agricultural technologies. The question is, however, whether farmland and rangeland resources can sustain such intensive use.

Land is a renewable …

Root Development Of Winter Wheat As Related To Tillage Practice In Western Nebraska, Wallace Wilhelm, L. N. Mielke, Charles R. Fenster Jan 1982

Root Development Of Winter Wheat As Related To Tillage Practice In Western Nebraska, Wallace Wilhelm, L. N. Mielke, Charles R. Fenster

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Tillage practices can influence crop root development. Root distributions were determined for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in a wheat-fallow rotation during the 1977-1978 winter wheat crop year on an Alliance silt loam (Aridic Argiustoll). The fallow tillage treatments were plow, subtillage, and chemical (no tillage). Each tillage treatment was split into subplots for N application of 0 or 45 kg/ha.

Rooting density was determined by washing the roots in soil cores 7.6 cm in diam by 15 cm long extracted to depths of 90, 105, and 120 cm on 28 Mar., 2 May, and 8 June 1978, respectively. …

David Hoffman's Essay On Professional Deportment And The Current Legal Ethics Debate, Stephen E. Kalish

Nebraska Law Review

Is the attorney primarily an advocate or an officer of the court? Commentators attacked the discussion draft of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct for emphasizing the latter and for abandoning the adversarial system. They claimed that the draft was revolutionary in departing from traditional ways. This Commentary has suggested that there has been no departure, for David Hoffman, in 1836, also believed that an attorney was, more an officer of the court than an advocate. Should proper attorney conduct be mandated by rules or should ethics be essentially a matter of personal and professional conscience? The drafts of the …

Santa Fe Taos, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1982

Santa Fe Taos, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Few artists' colonies have richer legacies than those of Santa Fe and Taos. Much of that Southwest tradition is represented in the collections of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. For that reason alone, it seems especially right that the Sheldon organize this exhibition of contemporary art from Northern New Mexico. There are, of course, other connections. Recently, the Sheldon mounted an exhibition of the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. Bernard Plossu, Joan Myers, and William Clift, all photographers working in New Mexico, have recently been exhibited here. In sum, the Sheldon's collections and exhibition calendars reflect the vitality of art from …

Status Of The Habitat Evaluation Procedures, Mel Schamberger, William B. Krohn Jan 1982

Status Of The Habitat Evaluation Procedures, Mel Schamberger, William B. Krohn

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The 1970s was a decade of increased awareness of environmental problems, and emphasis was placed on the development of procedures for predicting impacts of proposed developmental activities on natural systems. Impact assessment has evolved from a focus on species numbers, human use, species richness, and related methods to include the investigation of habitat as a supplemental or alternative approach to environmental planning, mitigation, species management, and impact assessment (Schamberger 1979, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1980a, 1980b). The impetus for habitat-based assessment techniques came primarily from two sources: (1) environmental legislation requiring noneconomic project evaluations; and (2) an awareness within …

In Situ Study Of The Physical Mechanisms Controlling Induced Seismicity At Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina, Mark D. Zoback, Stephen Hickman Jan 1982

In Situ Study Of The Physical Mechanisms Controlling Induced Seismicity At Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina, Mark D. Zoback, Stephen Hickman

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In two ~1.1-km-deep wells, the magnitudes of the principal in situ stresses, pore pressure, permeability, and the distribution of faults, fractures, and joints were measured directly in the hypocentral zones of earthquakes induced by impoundment of Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina. Analysis of these data suggests that the earthquakes were caused by an increase in subsurface pore pressure sufficiently large to trigger reverse-type fault motion on preexisting fault planes in a zone of relatively large shear stresses near the surface. The measurements indicated (1) near-critical stress differences for reverse-type fault motion at depths less than 200-300 m, (2) possibly increased pore …

Permeability, Underpressures, And Convection In The Oceanic Crust Near The Costa Rica Rift, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback Jan 1982

Permeability, Underpressures, And Convection In The Oceanic Crust Near The Costa Rica Rift, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In situ permeability and pore pressures were measured 200 m deep beneath the top of the oceanic crust at DSDP site 504B. These measurements have relevance for the transition from convective to conductive heat flow on the south flank of the Costa Rica Rift. Conventional 'slug' and constant rate injection tests were made below a hydraulic packer set at various depths in the hole. The packer was first set in a massive flow unit 37 m below the sediment-basement interface. The bulk permeability of the 172.5m of pillow basalts and basaltic flows below the packer was found to be about …

The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver Jan 1982

The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The plant pathogenic corynebacteria are a fascinating group of bacteria that produce effects as diverse as any in the microbial world, ranging from wilts to abnormal growths. Several new pathogens have been discovered since this group was reviewed by Jensen (75), Starr (157), and Lelliott (96). Most subsequent reviews have dealt with taxonomy. The areas covered in this review necessarily reflect my biases and limitations. However, this review attempts to be comprehensive in some areas, and it calls attention to other areas that would benefit from more detailed investigation.

A Preliminary History Of The Nebraska Academy Of Sciences, 1880-1982, C. Bertrand Schultz Jan 1982

A Preliminary History Of The Nebraska Academy Of Sciences, 1880-1982, C. Bertrand Schultz

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The Nebraska Academy of Sciences is the oldest scientific organization in the state of Nebraska and was formed to encourage the exchange of scientific data and to improve the communication between the various disciplines of scientific research in the different educational institutions. Those were the goals a century ago. Today they are basically the same:

To promote the utilization of scientific talent in the State of Nebraska in cooperation with local, state, federal, and private organizations in addressing all problems of the environment as they relate to science, and,

To dedicate its collective and individual talents to promoting the best …
