Physically Disabled Women And New Directions In Public Policy, 1977-1987., Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1987

Physically Disabled Women And New Directions In Public Policy, 1977-1987., Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Women with physical disabilities now demand new directions in public policy. Starting a mere decade ago, in 1977, a driving momentum redefined the self-concepts, expectations, and united actions of disabled women. This burgeoning social movement is documented here through the geometric growth of writings articulating the vision of a more active and independent group. An overview of this Iiterature and its policy implications is provided.

Differential Cross Sections For Ionization Of Water Vapor By High-Velocity Bare Ions And Electrons, J. H. Miller, W. E. Wilson, S. T. Manson, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1987

Differential Cross Sections For Ionization Of Water Vapor By High-Velocity Bare Ions And Electrons, J. H. Miller, W. E. Wilson, S. T. Manson, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

A semiempirical model of single differential cross sections (SDCS) for ionization of water vapor by fast electrons and bare ions is presented. At low secondary-electron energy, the model is based on an asymptotic expansion of the first Born approximation with coefficients, that are independent of projectile properties, evaluated from experimental photoabsorption and protonimpact ionization data. As the secondary-electron energy increases, the model converges to a binary-encounter approximation. Comparisons with measured differential, total, and dissociative cross sections for ionization of water by fast electrons are used to test the model. For primary electrons with energy greater than about 500 eV, agreement …

Hydrodynamic Models For The Short-Period, Classical Cepheid, Su Cas, T. Aikawa, E. Antonello, Norman R. Simon Jan 1987

Hydrodynamic Models For The Short-Period, Classical Cepheid, Su Cas, T. Aikawa, E. Antonello, Norman R. Simon

Norman R. Simon Papers

Hydrodynamic models are constructed for the 1.95- day, classical Cepheid, SU Cas. The models cover three luminosities (479, 955 and 2239 Lʘ) and a range of temperatures (6200 K ≤ Te ≤ 6500 K), in line with observational and theoretical results from the work of previous authors. Taking the linear stability and stability of limiting pulsations of the models into consideration, it is shown that at 479 Lʘ only the fundamental mode is possible; at 955 Lʘ the first overtone mode is possible; at 2239 Lʘ only the second overtone mode is possible. For …

Preface, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

Preface, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

To us, as feminist professors, the structural inequality of women is obvious. To our nonfeminist students, however, this inequality is often invisible. They believe, optimistically, that all women's problems have been solved or will be by the time they complete their undergraduate education. They are firm believers that American society is egalitarian and radically different from the world of ten or twenty years ago. This book is oriented toward our students and our vision. We, too, believe that people are flexible and can change, and that the United States Constitution guarantees equality for all citizens. We know, however, that women's …

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Several Forms Of Parenting: Mother, Genitrix, And Mater, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Melissa Stern was born March 27, 1986, in New Jersey. For one so young, she has experienced or been the subject of interstate flight and fugitive hegira, legal battles involving her own court-appointed attorney, social controversy, the voracious attention of an insensitive media industry, and a place in history as the famous Baby "M". Judge Sorkow (1987: 26-27), in his opinion awarding custody of Melissa to her genetic father and terminating all parental rights of her genetic mother, notes professional evaluations indicating Melissa to be a "a mellow, alert, easy-to-care-for child who is blessed with a 'sunniness of disposition that …

Review Of Willa Cather: The Emerging Voice, Patricia L. Yongue Jan 1987

Review Of Willa Cather: The Emerging Voice, Patricia L. Yongue

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

I remain unconvinced that Willa Cather led even the emotional life of a lesbian. Cather, I think, communicates a sympathy for heterosexuality, an increasing remoteness from sexuality altogether, and a valuing of woman "unnatural" because "unAmerican." Cather early suspected-and regretted-that her intimidating reserve about sexuality, moderated by Victorian and Southern gender polity, prohibited the flowering of intimacy. Instead of the risky intimacies, Cather sought what an intellectually strong but sexually reticent woman might seek: stimulating or "useful" friendships-with women and with men. Her major characters repeat the pattern. They experience intense excitements; often they transform obvious sexual emotion into other …

Patterns Of Dental Evolution In Early Eocene Anaptomorphine Primates (Omomyidae) From The Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, Thomas M. Bown, Kenneth D. Rose

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

ABSTRACT--The subfamily Anaptomorphinae contains the oldest and most generalized members of the tarsier-like primates and is the basal group of the extinct family Omomyidae. The best and most continuous record of anaptomorphine history is from rocks of early Eocene (Wasatchian) age in the Bighorn Basin of northwest Wyoming where eight genera and 14 species are recognized. Three of these species are new (Teilhardina crassidens, Tetonius matthewi, Absarokius metoecus), and four other new species are described from elsewhere (Tetonius mckennai, Absarokius gazini, A. australis, Strigorhysis huerfanensis). Teilhardina tenuicula and Absarokius nocerai are …

The Effects Of Infections By Pyrenophora Teres And Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus On The Freezing Hardiness Of Winter Barley, Leslie M. Delserone, H. Cole Jr., J. A. Frank Jan 1987

The Effects Of Infections By Pyrenophora Teres And Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus On The Freezing Hardiness Of Winter Barley, Leslie M. Delserone, H. Cole Jr., J. A. Frank

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Single and mixed infections by Pyrenophora teres and two isolates of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) were evaluated for their effects on the resistance to freezing stress of crowns of the winter barley cultivar Pennrad. Plants received one of several treatments: P. teres; either the RMV-NY or PAV-NY isolate of BYDV; RMV + P. teres; PAV + P. teres; or infestation with either nonviruliferous Rhopalosiphum maidis or R. padi. After the treatments, foliage and roots were harvested from 4-wk-old plants to evaluate the effects of infection(s) on top and root growth before freezing. The crowns were subjected to a controlled …

In The Land Of Th Indian Woslata: Plains Indian Influences On Reservation Whites, Timothy J. Kloberdanz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

If one climbs the high grassy hill that overlooks the town of Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Reservation in south-central North Dakota, the scene that gradually unfolds is an engaging one. Fort Yates is bordered on practically all sides by the expansive waters of Lake Oahe. Except for the fact that the community resembles a veritable island, it looks much like other Great Plains towns, with an assortment of generously spaced old and new structures. From the top of the hill to the north, one can sec for miles across the lake and the Missouri River to the rolling …

Evaluation Of Repellent Seed Treatments And Effects On Early Corn Performance, Ann E. Koehler, Ron J. Johnson, Orvin C. Burnside, Stephen R. Lowry Jan 1987

Evaluation Of Repellent Seed Treatments And Effects On Early Corn Performance, Ann E. Koehler, Ron J. Johnson, Orvin C. Burnside, Stephen R. Lowry

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A combination of field, field enclosure, and germination chamber studies was used to evaluate the effects of methiocarb [3,5-dimethyl-4-(methylthio)phenol methylcarbamate] and thiram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide) repellent seed treatments on early corn performance. The thiram treatments used (0.08, 0.4,0.8,0.5,1.25, and 2.5% active ingredient by corn seed weight) had negligible effects on germination/emergence time or on com plant heights. The thiram treatments never reduced stand counts in comparison to controls, but apparently increased stand counts in some trials, particularly under wet conditions. The methiocarb treatments evaluated (0.5, 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0% active ingredient by corn seed weight) had only occasional effects on early …

Leaders And Non-Leaders, Paul Brooks, Will Norton Jr., John W. Windhauser Dec 1986

Leaders And Non-Leaders, Paul Brooks, Will Norton Jr., John W. Windhauser

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Newspaper editors often think of community leaders as being different from other newspaper readers. Such an assumption is supported with studies showing that opinion ' leaders have greater exposure to mass media than their followers and read different types of articles than do non-leaders.

But a recent study in Oxford, Miss., shows that media use patterns by leaders and non-leaders in a small rural community do not differ as much as previous studies seem to indicate. Perhaps the main reason that former studies reported vast differences in these two groups was the selection of opinion leaders. Earlier studies were skewed …

A Study Of The Factors Which Influenced The Perception Of Cooperation Between County Extension Agents And Vocational Agriculture Teachers In Nebraska, Robert Duwaine Boettcher Dec 1986

A Study Of The Factors Which Influenced The Perception Of Cooperation Between County Extension Agents And Vocational Agriculture Teachers In Nebraska, Robert Duwaine Boettcher

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the factors which county agents and vocational agriculture teachers perceived to influence the extent of cooperative arrangements and activities that exist in Nebraska. A questionnaire was used to survey county extension agents and vocational agriculture teachers in Nebraska. The sample was drawn from all agents and teachers in Nebraska in April 1986. A 50 percent sample of each population was selected to receive surveys with 34 of the 45 county agents and 61 of the 70 vocational agriculture teachers providing valid responses. The results were tested for frequency and then cross …

California Gull In Keith County, Nebraska, Mark A. Brogie Dec 1986

California Gull In Keith County, Nebraska, Mark A. Brogie

Nebraska Bird Review

The status of the California Gull (Larus californicus) in Nebraska has undergone a series of changes in recent years. Rapp et al. (1958) makes no mention of this species for Nebraska, although one was collected 19 March 1933 in Lancaster County (Hudson 1933) and is now an axial skeleton #ZM11152 in the University of Nebraska State Museum (Bray et al. 1986). Johnsgard (1980) lists the species as an extremely rare migrant or vagrant in most of Nebraska, while Rasche (1982) designates it as casual in spring and summer and accidental in autumn in northwestern Nebraska and southwestern South …

Writing A Documentation, Barbara L. Wilson Dec 1986

Writing A Documentation, Barbara L. Wilson

Nebraska Bird Review

As the previous article makes clear, the written documentation helps birdwatchers communicate clearly about unusual sightings. Preparing the report can even add to the excitement of the event as one settles into a comfortable chair with the field notes and paper, chortling “Wait ‘til they read about this!” Then one relives the whole experience while organizing one’s thoughts for writing. Those field notes are an important part of the process, for they keep small but critical details accurate. Train yourself to take some kind of notebook or paper into the field, though in a pinch the margin of a field …

First-Principles Theoretical Explanation Of Incommensurate Behavior In Rbznc4, V. Katkanant, P. J. Edwardson, John R. Hardy, L. L. Boyer Oct 1986

First-Principles Theoretical Explanation Of Incommensurate Behavior In Rbznc4, V. Katkanant, P. J. Edwardson, John R. Hardy, L. L. Boyer

John R. Hardy Papers

We have carried out an ab initio theoretical study of the potential energy and molecular dynamics of Rb2ZnCl4. These calculations demonstrate that the incommensurate transition in this compound is caused by the relaxation of imperfect-hexagonal spirals of highly unstable ZnCl42- ions. This leads to angstrom-size displacements with essentially zero energy change. We argue that such "latent" (or imperfect) symmetry could be the general cause of incommensurate transitions in insulators.

The recently increased importance of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus Linnaeus) as a crop has brought with it an increased interest in the sunflower maggot, a long-recognized common name for Strauzia longipennis (Wiedemann). The larva of this species bores downward in the stem and feeds upon the pith of sunflowers. Until recently the genus Strauzia was considered to include only the type-species S. longipennis, with 7 varieties (Foote, 1965). It is now known that some of these varieties should be classed as distinct species, differing morphologically and biologically.

Lung Cancer Risk At Low Doses Of Α Particles, Werner Hofmann, Robert Katz, Zhang Chunxiang

Robert Katz Publications

A survey of inhabitant exposures arising from the inhalation of 222Rn and 220Rn progeny, and lung cancer mortality has been carried out in two adjacent areas in Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China, designated as the “high background” and the “control” area. Annual exposure rates are 0.38 working level months (WLM) per year in the high background, and 0.16 WLM/yr in the control area. In 14 yr of continuous study, from 1970 to 1983, age-adjusted mortality rates were found to be 2.7 per 105 living persons of all ages in the high background area, and 2.9 per …
