Testing Sociobiological Hypotheses Ethnographically, Patricia Draper
Testing Sociobiological Hypotheses Ethnographically, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Satisfactory tests of sociobiological theory using data on humans suffer from many problems, many of which are cogently argued by Kitcher. Other obstacles derive from the fact that cultural anthropology itself is undergoing a paradigm shift, in which people are no longer considered to be influenced by the normative environment with a high degree of predictability. Information about human behavior guided by this new set of assumptions is far more likely to yield the type of data necessary to test sociobiological ideas. Once the construct of culture is abandoned (or at least not assumed to have much power for predicting …
Contemporary Groups For Genetic Evaluations, L. Dale Van Vleck
Contemporary Groups For Genetic Evaluations, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Contemporary groups are used to remove biases from genetic evaluations due to differential effects such as management associated with the grouping. Numerous groups, however, can result in small numbers of records per subclass with associated loss of effective number of daughters for sire evaluation and increased prediction error variance. Thus, in practice, mean square error, bias squared plus prediction error variance, may be more meaningful than bias alone or prediction error variance. Considering contemporary groups as fixed removes bias due to association between effects corresponding to contemporary groups and sires. If contemporary groups are considered random, then effective number of …

Lamberton, Robert. Homer The Theologian: Neoplatonist Allegorical Readings And The Growth Of The Epic Tradition. Berkeley: University Of California Press, 1986. (Review), Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This book is excellent both for classicists and Spenserians, for the latter not only because Homer is the (direct or indirect) source for many episodes in The Faerie Queene but because the modes of understanding epic which Lamberton explores are crucial to the comprehension of Spenserian allegory. The work continues the tradition of examination of classical myth and allegory begun by Felix Buffiere, Jerome Carcopino, Franz Cumont, and Jean Pepin. Beginning with the early Neo-Pythagorian allegorists, it proceeds to cover Homeric commentary in 'apostolic' and 'post-apostolic' times: that of Philo, Numenius, Clement and Origen in Jewish-Christian tradition; and that of …

A Review Of Perlinella Banks (Plecoptera: Perlidae), Boris C. Kondratieff, Ralph F. Kirchner, Kenneth W. Stewart
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
The Nearctic stonefly genus Perlinella Banks is reviewed; three valid species are recognized. Perlinella drymo (Newman) and Perlinella ephyre (Newman) are widespread east of the Rocky Mountains, whereas Perlin ella zwicki, n. sp. (P. jumipennis of Zwick 1971), is restricted to the southeastern Coastal Plain. Perlinella jumipennis (Walsh) is replaced as a synonym of Perlinella ephyre. Keys for adults and nymphs are provided, and the nymph of P. zwicki is described for the first time. Male drumming calls of Perlin della drymo and Perlinella ephyre are described.

Short Communications: Localization Of Oviductal Sperm-Storage Tubules In The American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius), Murray R. Bakst, David M. Bird
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Sperm-storage tubules (SST) are discrete tubular invaginations of the bird's oviduct epithelium located in the anterior end of the vaginal folds, a region generally referred to as the uterovaginal junction (UVJ). [We prefer to refer to the UVJ sperm-storage sites collectively as the SST (originally used by Mero and Ogasawara 1970) because SST accurately describes their function and structure.] Of the 27 recognized orders of birds, SST have been identified histologically only in selected species of Charadriiformes and Procellariformes (Hatch 1983), Galliformes (Fujii and Tamura 1963), Anseriformes (Pal 1977), and Passeriformes (Bray et al. 1975). Whether SST are structures common …

Home On The Range: The Vitality Of The Open Fields Doctrine Under The Nebraska Constitution: State V. Havlat, 222 Neb. 554, 385 N.W.2d 436 (1986), John M. Ryan
Nebraska Law Review
This note focuses on one battle in Nebraska’s “war on drugs,” a battle wherein state constitutional guarantees against unreasonable searches and seizures were effectively emasculated by a majority of the Nebraska Supreme Court. Through its holding in State v. Havlat, the court refused to legitimize privacy expectations in Nebraska's "open fields" and has left law enforcement and litigants uncertain as to when, if ever, state constitutional guarantees will rise above the federal floor. The court's decision in Havlat fails on both substantive and methodological grounds. To analyze the Havlat decision, it is necessary to examine the substantive rationale in …

Chapter 37 Drought Policy: Toward A Plan Of Action, Donald A. Wilhite, William E. Easterling Iii
Chapter 37 Drought Policy: Toward A Plan Of Action, Donald A. Wilhite, William E. Easterling Iii
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
From the preceding discussions it is clear that in most cases, governments and international organizations have been unable to respond effectively to drought. This inability to respond was recognized by workshop participants as a serious problem of global dimensions that can only be solved through interdisciplinary studies and cooperation between scientists and policy makers.
'Asking Directions’ And Pedestrian Wayfinding, Michael R. Hill
'Asking Directions’ And Pedestrian Wayfinding, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper reports a study of the social ecology and systemic aspects of "asking for directions" in an urban area. Interviews were conducted with 100 randomly selected pedestrians at spatially stratified locations representing a variety of urban environments in Lincoln, Nebraska. The interviewer, posing as a "lost" pedestrian, asked respondents to give directions to local landmarks and then unobtrusively recorded their responses on a concealed tape recorder. Respondents generally provided accurate, distance-conserving directions with low levels of spatial complexity. Responses were friendly and often tailored to the unique environmental attributes characterizing each location. An outline of the process whereby a …

Natural Enemies Of Rice Leaf Folder Cnaphalocrocis Medinalis (Guenée) —A Critical Review, R. C. Joshi, E. P. Cadapan, Elvis A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A chronological review of the biological control agents of rice leaf folder, Cnaphafalocrocis medinalis Guenée, including the stage of host attacked in different countries, their activity and suggestions for future.
The rice leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenée, which was a pest of minor importance till the last decade, recently has assumed major importance in many rice ecosystem of Asia, the South Pacific Islands, Hawaii and Australia (Hirao, 1982). Increasingly frequent outbreaks of this pest (Table I) in recent years have been attributed to the introduction of modern rice technologies, namely: Continuous and overlapping cropping (Rajamma and Das, 1969); introduction of …
Interdependence: An Alternative Conceptualization, Bart Victor, Richard S. Blackburn
Interdependence: An Alternative Conceptualization, Bart Victor, Richard S. Blackburn
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Conceptualizations of interdependence offered by Thompson (1967) and McCann and Ferry (1979) fail to satisfy basic requirements for empirical or practical investigations of complex organizations. An alternative conceptualization based on interdependence theory (Kelley & Thibaut, 1978; Thibaut & Kelley, 1959) is presented here and used to explain the causes of interunit conflict and the effective- ness of coordination strategy. Hypotheses are presented, and future research is proposed.
A Synthetic Approach To The Study Of Animal Intelligence, Alan Kamil
A Synthetic Approach To The Study Of Animal Intelligence, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Psychologists have been studying animal learning for about a century. This century of experimental and theoretical work has produced some remarkable successes, particularly in understanding basic conditioning processes. However, these successes are limited in two major ways. First, they have been confined to a narrow domain. Recent research from a variety of settings has demonstrated that animals have mental abilities far beyond what they were given credit for just a few years ago. We must dramatically expand the range of phenomena addressed by the study of animal learning. Second, there has been an almost complete failure to place animal learning …

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson
Karl Reinhard Publications
Examination of coprolites excavated from archaeological sites in the Americas demonstrates excellent preservation of helminth eggs and, in some cases, larvae. To gain an understanding of helminth parasitism in prehistory on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, 319 coprolites from 5 archaeological sites were analyzed. Helminth eggs and larvae were recovered after the coprolites were rehydrated, screened, and sedimented. At a sixth site, soils excavated from 5 rooms used as latrine areas were processed with palynological techniques. The results indicate that all but 1 of the prehistoric populations examined were infected with intestinal worms. The helminths implicated …
