Breeding Value Prediction With Maternal Genetic Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1990

Breeding Value Prediction With Maternal Genetic Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

For models with only additive direct genetic effects, the rules of Westell combined with the Q-P transformation can be used to calculate the coefficients of mixed-model equations corresponding to the inverse elements of the numerator relationship matrix and group effects that are used to account for selection on ancestors that do not have records. Groups generally can be assigned on the basis of most recent ancestors without records. When maternal effects are in the model, most recent female ancestors without records contribute maternal effects to their progeny. If the vectors for additive direct and maternal effects do not include the …

2. Teacher-Performance Assessments: A New Kind Of Teacher Examination, Edward H. Haertel Jan 1990

2. Teacher-Performance Assessments: A New Kind Of Teacher Examination, Edward H. Haertel

Assessment of Teaching: Purposes, Practices, and Implications for the Profession

During the last week of July 1987,20 fourth- and fifth-grade teachers spent four days at a simulated assessment center in an elementary school. Each teacher completed 10 performance exercises on the teaching of equivalent fractions. The following week, 20 high school teachers of United States history spent four days completing a like number of exercises on the American revolution and the formation of the new government. These field tests were the culmination of over a year's work by the Teacher Assessment Project (TAP), sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, under the direction of Professor Lee S. Shulman at …

5. Teacher Evaluation In The Organizational Context, Linda Darling-Hammond

Assessment of Teaching: Purposes, Practices, and Implications for the Profession

Personnel evaluation in an organization provides a powerful metaphor for what is valued in the organization, how roles are construed, and which goals have de facto priority in the management of organizational affairs. The importance attached to this function says much about the organization's relationship to its clients, as well as the relationships among organizational members. The same can be said about the importance of evaluation in an occupation whose members share a common service mission. Indeed, evaluation plays a particularly critical role in an occupation that claims to be a profession. This chapter explores the role of teacher evaluation …

G90-1006 Setting Up A Family Council, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1990

G90-1006 Setting Up A Family Council, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A family sitting down together and talking about important thoughts, situations, and issues is certainly not a new idea--it has been practiced for centuries. It is an idea, however, that needs to be put to work in the present day.

1. Do you treat your child better, worse or about the same as you treat your best friend?

2. Does your child have equal status as a person with the adults in your family?

3. Do you assign chores and times to do them, or does your child help in the planning?

4. Do you try to make decisions about …

G90-986 Strengthening The Couple Relationship, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1990

G90-986 Strengthening The Couple Relationship, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

After a couple has been married for a number of years, there seems to be a lack of individual artistry and creativity in the relationship. Each person becomes involved in a routine of relating to the other in a certain way. Patterns develop because of living in the same house and responding to children's needs. Couples develop certain habitual work patterns, see the same people socially, etc. The same ways of relating and behaving may persist, unchallenged and unchanged, for years. The behavior will continue long after it has ceased to produce delight, zest or growth. Therefore, the most destructive …

Cc90-352 Team Building: Developing A Productive Team, Arnold J. Bateman Jan 1990

Cc90-352 Team Building: Developing A Productive Team, Arnold J. Bateman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Team building is an effort in which a team studies its own process of working together and acts to create a climate that encourages and values the contributions of team members. Their energies are directed toward problem solving, task effectiveness, and maximizing the use of all members' resources to achieve the team's purpose. Sound team building recognizes that it is not possible to fully separate one's performance from those of others.

Cc90-351 Team Building: Organizing A Team, Arnold J. Bateman Jan 1990

Cc90-351 Team Building: Organizing A Team, Arnold J. Bateman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Most managers and organizational leaders recognize the interdependence of employees or other group members and the need for cooperation to accomplish the work. A team that is communicating and functioning well has synergy; that is why people working as a team can achieve better results than individuals working alone. That does not mean, however, that productivity will automatically go up by putting a group of good performers together.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Foundation cows were selected using prior records from one of two sources, private herds or other projects at the Research Center. Comparing twinning rates before and after selection, the repeatability was lower for those from the fist (.08) than for those from the second (.16) source with a combined value of .12. Realized heritability of single-parity twinning rate estimated from selection of parents and response in daughters of foundation females was .06. Paternal half-sib estimate of heritability of twinning rate was .02 ± .07. Estimates of repeatability computed from calving records of females born in the project indicate that permanent …

Enzymatic And Nonenzymatic Mechanisms For Ferric Leghemoglobin Reduction In Legume Root Nodules, Manuel Becana, Robert V. Klucas

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Evidence is presented for the operation in nodules of at least four systems for restoring functional ferrous leghemoglobin (Lb2+) from its inactive, ferric form. (i) Reduction of ferric leghemoglobin (Lb3+) by a reductase. The enzyme is a flavoprotein of 100 kDa with two equally sized subunits and exhibits a Km of 9 µM for soybean Lb3+ component a and a K. of 51 µM for NADH. NADPH is only 30% (initial velocities) as effective as NADH. Lb3+ reductase converts 215 nmol of Lb3+to Lb2+ •CO (or Lb2+ •O2 …

Ectoparasites Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William R. Payne, David W. Oates, Glen E. Dappen Jan 1990

Ectoparasites Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William R. Payne, David W. Oates, Glen E. Dappen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

In 1971, 1983 and 1984, ectoparasites were identified on 61 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from Nebraska. Birds were collected throughout the state from 11 of 93 counties. Four species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) were collected: Lipeurus maculosus, Goniodes colchici, Lagopoecus coichicus and Amyrsidea megalosoma. One species of analgid mite, Megninia sp. was collected. Apparently, this species is new and undescribed. The four mallophagan species have not been reported from Nebraska.

‘Prairie Snow’ Penstemon, Dale T. Lindgren Jan 1990

‘Prairie Snow’ Penstemon, Dale T. Lindgren

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

‘Prairie Snow’ is a white-flowered, seedpropagated bulk population of Penstemon grandiflorus selected for home landscape use that also can be used for prairie and roadside plantings. It was released in 1988 in conjunction with, and to honor, the 10th anniversary of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. It is unique to this species because of its pure white flowers. A native population of P. grandiflorus was manipulated using a modified bulk population selection scheme so that plants with specific traits could be isolated from plants without the desired traits.

Two similar cultivars, Albus and Lena Seeba, have been mentioned in the literature. …

A Study Of Numerical Methods For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws With Stiff Source Terms, R. J. Leveque, Helen C. Yee Jan 1990

A Study Of Numerical Methods For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws With Stiff Source Terms, R. J. Leveque, Helen C. Yee

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The proper modeling of nonequilibrium gas dynamics is required in certain regimes of hypersonic flow. For inviscid flow this gives a system of conservation laws coupled with source terms representing the chemistry. Often a wide range of time scales is present in the problem, leading to numerical difficulties as in stiff systems of ordinary differential equations. Stability can be achieved by using implicit methods, but other numerical difficulties are observed. The behavior of typical numerical methods on a model advection equation with a parameter-dependent source term is studied. Two approaches to incorporate the source terms are utilized: MacCormack type predictor-corrector …

High-Level Microprogramming: An Optimising C Compiler For A Processing Element Of A Cad Accelerator, Paul Kenyon, Prathima Agrawal, Sharad C. Seth Jan 1990

High-Level Microprogramming: An Optimising C Compiler For A Processing Element Of A Cad Accelerator, Paul Kenyon, Prathima Agrawal, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The development of a high-level language compiler for a micro-programmable processing element (PE) in the MARS multicomputer is described. MARS, an MIMD message passing machine, was designed to speed up VLSI CAD and similar other non-numerical applications. The need for sup port of a high-level language at the PE level of a multicomputer is considered, and the choice of C as an appropriate programming language is justified. Special features found in VLSI processors are examined along with compiler support for them.

Conventional re-targetable compiler techniques are shown to be inadequate for the highly concurrent micro-programmable PE. These techniques must be …

Relationships Between Blood Parasites, Mating Success And Phenotypic Cues In Male Sage Grouse Centrocercus Urophasianus, Robert M. Gibson Jan 1990

Relationships Between Blood Parasites, Mating Success And Phenotypic Cues In Male Sage Grouse Centrocercus Urophasianus, Robert M. Gibson

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In lek breeding Sage Grouse Centrocercus urophasianus in eastern California, male mating success is strongly correlated with individual differences in lek attendance, and in the rate and acoustic quality of courtship display, suggesting that these provide cues by which females choose mates. Increased lek attendance and high display rates also associated with elevated metabolic expenditure. This paper examines the hypothesis that the ability to commit energy to display is related to the incidence of blood parasites. A single hematozoan genus, Haemoproteus, was found in 37.5% of 184 Sage Grouse sampled over a five year period. Parasitism varied across years and …

Flex: A Golden Opportunity For Motivating Students For Foreign Language Study, Aleidine Kramer Moeller Jan 1990

Flex: A Golden Opportunity For Motivating Students For Foreign Language Study, Aleidine Kramer Moeller

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

FLEX is the common acronym used to describe a presequenced Foreign Language EXploratory course ranging in length from six to nine weeks. Such a course is designed to motivate students to pursue foreign language study, to develop their interest in the world and its peoples, and to increase their sensitivity to cultural similarities and differences. There are a variety of FLEX programs in existence (Grittner, 1974). Some are cultural in nature, others emphasize linguistics, and still others are career-based (Strasheim, 1982, p. 60). The FLEX course is usually offered in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade before foreign language study is …
