Mental Health And Teammates, Carly O'Dell May 2018

Mental Health And Teammates, Carly O'Dell

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Mental health is an aspect so essential throughout the human experience, yet an aspect overlooked by many. Specifically, mental health in youth is an area hardly touched by different initiatives, programs, and organizations that are put in place in order to bring assistance and guidance to youth. This is despite overwhelming statistics regarding youth and mental health. After analyzing the TeamMates Mentoring Program and finding inadequate measures in place regarding mental health, different initiatives were created in order to increase the program’s use of advocacy, awareness, and actions regarding mental health in youth.

Arsenic Toxicity And Mitochondrial Metabolism In Astrocytes, Reilly Grealish May 2018

Arsenic Toxicity And Mitochondrial Metabolism In Astrocytes, Reilly Grealish

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The various cells that support neurons in both the central and peripheral nervous systems are known collectively as neuroglia, or glia. Astrocytes, a type of glial cell found exclusively in the central nervous system (i.e. the brain and spinal cord), are particularly abundant and serve many functions. One of the most important is the role these cells play in the brain as a defense against harmful substances, many of which can be found in the environment and make their way into the human body as xenobiotic substances. Elemental arsenic in its inorganic form occurs naturally throughout the Earth’s crust, but …

Animal-Assisted Activities Survey At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln: Assessing Student Opinions And Determining Possible Implementation Strategy, Emma Winters

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

In most situations, animals are not allowed on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) campus, including animals used for animal-assisted activities (AAA). Animal-assisted activities have been shown to provide numerous benefits to participants and there could be positive effects to offering AAA at UNL. In order to gauge the opinions of students regarding AAA and how AAA could best be implemented on the UNL campus, a survey was emailed to Animal Science majors and students enrolled in ASCI 271 and ASCI 321 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. A request to participate was also included in the weekly College of Agricultural Sciences …

Condition-Dependent Life History Strategies, Shivani Vijayraj Jadeja May 2018

Condition-Dependent Life History Strategies, Shivani Vijayraj Jadeja

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many organisms evolve condition-dependent life history strategies to maximize their lifetime fitness in response to intrinsic and extrinsic processes. I investigated a sequentially flowering plant’s strategy to allocate resources to retain flowers versus grow existing basal fruits to a larger size, using the plant Yucca glauca. The sink strength hypothesis suggests basal fruits are nutrient sinks depriving distal flowers of resources and reducing their probability of retention. A low probability of retention of distal flowers can also be explained by the architectural effects hypothesis. This hypothesis posits inherent positional differences in structures along an inflorescence such as flower size …

Drawing Them In: Phlebotomic Pedagogy, Anne K. Johnson May 2018

Drawing Them In: Phlebotomic Pedagogy, Anne K. Johnson

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis employs a critical analysis of phlebotomy, or drawing blood, to serve as a lens through which to examine pedagogy, power, and student vulnerability in first-year composition courses. Palpable similarities exist between the teacher of composition and the drawer of blood, and this comparison reveals the normalized but troubling power dynamics housed in medical and educational institutions. Furthermore, this thesis examines the resulting dynamics produced by the institutional power imbalance in both the first-year writing classroom and the blood draw. These dynamics primarily include, but are not limited to intimacy, terror, and aggression. Through an analysis of the first-year …

Yates, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Ty B. Schmidt, Caitlin N. Cadaret, Taylor L. Barnes, Robert J. Posont, Kristin A. Beede

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is the second leading cause of perinatal mortality and predisposes offspring to metabolic disorders at all stages of life. Muscle-centric fetal adaptations reduce growth and yield metabolic parsimony, beneficial for IUGR fetal survival but detrimental to metabolic health after birth. Epidemiological studies have reported that IUGRborn children experience greater prevalence of insulin resistance and obesity, which progresses to diabetes, hypertension, and other metabolic disorders in adulthood that reduce quality of life. Similar adaptive programming in livestock results in decreased birth weights, reduced and inefficient growth, decreased carcass merit, and substantially greater mortality rates prior to maturation. …

Clarireedia: A New Fungal Genus Comprising Four Pathogenic Species Responsible For Dollar Spot Disease Of Turfgrass, Catalina Salgado-Salazar, Lisa A. Beirn, Adnan Ismaiel, Michael J. Boehm, Ignazio Carbone, Alexander I. Putman, Lane P. Tredway, Bruce B. Clarke, Jo Anne Crouch

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Dollar spot is one of the most destructive and economically important fungal diseases of amenity turfgrasses. The causal agent was first described in 1937 as the ascomycete Sclerotinia homoeocarpa. However, the genus-level taxonomic placement of this fungus has been the subject of an ongoing debate for over 75 y. Existing morphological and rDNA sequence evidence indicates that this organism is more appropriately placed in the family Rutstroemiaceae rather than the Sclerotiniaceae. Here we use DNA sequence data from samples of the dollar spot fungus and other members of the Rutstroemiaceae (e.g. Rutstroemia, Lanzia, Lambertella) collected throughout the world to determine …

Body Size Downgrading Of Mammals Over The Late Quaternary, Felisa A. Smith, Rosemary E. Elliott Smith, S. Kathleen Lyons, Jonathan L. Payne Apr 2018

Body Size Downgrading Of Mammals Over The Late Quaternary, Felisa A. Smith, Rosemary E. Elliott Smith, S. Kathleen Lyons, Jonathan L. Payne

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Since the late Pleistocene, large-bodied mammals have been extirpated from much of Earth. Although all habitable continents once harbored giant mammals, the few remaining species are largely confined to Africa. This decline is coincident with the global expansion of hominins over the late Quaternary. Here, we quantify mammalian extinction selectivity, continental body size distributions, and taxonomic diversity over five time periods spanning the past 125,000 years and stretching approximately 200 years into the future. We demonstrate that size-selective extinction was already under way in the oldest interval and occurred on all continents, within all trophic modes, and across all time …

Effect Of Shot Peening On Stress Corrosion Behavior Of Biodegradable Magnesium We43, Tejaswita Patil Apr 2018

Effect Of Shot Peening On Stress Corrosion Behavior Of Biodegradable Magnesium We43, Tejaswita Patil

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Conventionally used metals for orthopedic devices made of titanium, stainless steel, and Co-Cr alloys are designed to be permanently implanted. However, long-term complications arise and a secondary implant removal surgery is often necessary. A mismatch in stiffness between the bone and implant results in stress shielding that negatively affects bone density. To overcome these problems, magnesium alloys (e.g., WE34) are favored due to a lower Young’s modulus (45 GPa) and biodegradability. The critical technical barrier with magnesium alloys is their high corrosion rate in physiological (salt-based) environments. One solution is to use surface treatments, such as shot peening (SP), to …

Wetland Conservation Effects Result In Enhanced Playa Functionality In The Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, Hong Zhang Apr 2018

Wetland Conservation Effects Result In Enhanced Playa Functionality In The Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, Hong Zhang

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

This study assessed the functionality level of wetland hydrology, hydrophyte and soil conditions, and then identified the restorable potential of conserved playas. The distribution of hydrology and hydrophyte were geospatially examined through annual tracking the quantity and quality of wetlands on historical hydric soil footprints under different conservation programs in the Rainwater Basin (RWB) in Nebraska, USA during 2004-2015. The results show that the historical hydric soil footprints with the conservation programs had significantly higher functionality of ponded water and hydrophyte than non-conserved wetlands. The yearly average of ponded water areas within footprints varies at 12.59% for the Waterfowl Production …

Energetic Tradeoffs Control The Size Distribution Of Aquatic Mammals, William Gearty, Craig R. Mcclain, Jonathan Payne Apr 2018

Energetic Tradeoffs Control The Size Distribution Of Aquatic Mammals, William Gearty, Craig R. Mcclain, Jonathan Payne

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Four extant lineages of mammals have invaded and diversified in the water: Sirenia, Cetacea, Pinnipedia, and Lutrinae. Most of these aquatic clades are larger bodied, on average, than their closest land-dwelling relatives, but the extent to which potential ecological, biomechanical, and physiological controls contributed to this pattern remains untested quantitatively. Here, we use previously published data on the body masses of 3,859 living and 2,999 fossil mammal species to examine the evolutionary trajectories of body size in aquatic mammals through both comparative phylogenetic analysis and examination of the fossil record. Both methods indicate that the evolution of an aquatic lifestyle …

The Impact Of Land Use On Nitrate-N Movement And Storage In The Vadose Zone Of The Hastings’ Whpa, Craig Adams Apr 2018

The Impact Of Land Use On Nitrate-N Movement And Storage In The Vadose Zone Of The Hastings’ Whpa, Craig Adams

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Nebraska has one of the largest agricultural economies in the United States and relies heavily on irrigation and fertilizer application to maintain crop yields. Over-irrigation and continuous application of nitrogen (N) in many areas has led to accumulation of nitrate-N in soils and sediments throughout the state’s vadose zone. Because nitrate-N is both persistent and mobile, groundwater concentrations in many areas of Nebraska and other agriculturally intensive states are increasing. Nitrate-N contamination of public and private drinking water supplies that utilize groundwater are of particular concern. Vadose zone sampling is an important method for rapidly assessing the effect of changing …

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

VISITOR PARKING ONLY is a thesis comprised of 40 poems and a fifteen-page introduction that travels simultaneously through the climatic seasons and familial generations, creating a cyclical effect of inevitable loss and regrowth. The poems start in late spring, early summer and dive into adolescent wonder, vulnerable, and loss of innocence. Gradually as the seasons change so does the speaker, diving into young adulthood and parenting and the sense of responsibility, guilt, and confusion that has played such a large role in developing me as a person. The poems transition into the winter months where older generations, such as my …

Downscaling Africa’S Drought Forecasts Through Integration Of Indigenous And Scientific Drought Forecasts Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, Muthoni Masinde, Mwanjele Mwagha, Tsegaye Tadesse Apr 2018

Downscaling Africa’S Drought Forecasts Through Integration Of Indigenous And Scientific Drought Forecasts Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, Muthoni Masinde, Mwanjele Mwagha, Tsegaye Tadesse

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

In the wake of increased drought occurrences being witnessed in Sub-Saharan Africa, more localized and contextualized drought mitigation strategies are on the agendas of many researchers and policy makers in the region. The integration of indigenous knowledge on droughts with seasonal climate forecasts is one such strategy. The main challenge facing this integration, however, is the formal representation of highly-structured and holistic indigenous knowledge. In this paper, we demonstrate how the use of fuzzy cognitive mapping can address this challenge. Indigenous knowledge on droughts from five communities was modeled and represented using fuzzy cognitive maps. Maps from one of these …

Recovering Parasites From Mummies And Coprolites: An Epidemiological Approach, Morgana Camacho, Adauto Araújo, Johnica J. Morrow, Jane E. Buikstra, Karl Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

In the field of archaeological parasitology, researchers have long documented the distribution of parasites in archaeological time and space through the analysis of coprolites and human remains. This area of research defined the origin and migration of parasites through presence/absence studies. By the end of the 20th century, the field of pathoecology had emerged as researchers developed an interest in the ancient ecology of parasite transmission. Supporting studies were conducted to establish the relationships between parasites and humans, including cultural, subsistence, and ecological reconstructions. Parasite prevalence data were collected to infer the impact of parasitism on human health. In the …

Changes In Myoblast Responsiveness To Tnfα And Il-6 Contribute To Decreased Skeletal Muscle Mass In Intrauterine Growth Restricted Fetal Sheep, Robert J. Posont, Kristin A. Beede, Sean W. Limesand, Dustin T. Yates Apr 2018

Changes In Myoblast Responsiveness To Tnfα And Il-6 Contribute To Decreased Skeletal Muscle Mass In Intrauterine Growth Restricted Fetal Sheep, Robert J. Posont, Kristin A. Beede, Sean W. Limesand, Dustin T. Yates

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality (Alisi et al., 2011). Skeletal muscle growth is disproportionately reduced in IUGR fetuses and offspring (Padoan et al. 2004; Yates et al. 2014). These individuals present with reduced muscle mass and increased risk for metabolic disorders at all stages of life (Godfrey and Barker, 2000; Yates et al. 2016.). Muscle growth requires proliferation, differentiation, and fusion of myoblasts (muscle stem cells) to form muscle fibers early in gestation and to increase myonuclear content of existing fibers during late gestation and after birth (Yates et al., 2014). These …

Impaired Muscle Stem Cell Function In Cows With High Concentrations Of Androstenedione In Their Follicular Fluid, Taylor L. Barnes, Kiristen A. Beede, Elena M. Merrick, Caitlin N. Cadaret, Andrea S. Cupp, Dustin T. Yates Apr 2018

Impaired Muscle Stem Cell Function In Cows With High Concentrations Of Androstenedione In Their Follicular Fluid, Taylor L. Barnes, Kiristen A. Beede, Elena M. Merrick, Caitlin N. Cadaret, Andrea S. Cupp, Dustin T. Yates

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

It is unclear whether androstenedione (A4) increases muscle mass and strength similar to testosterone or whether it produces primarily catabolic effects on muscle-like estrogen (Rasmussen et al., 2000). Summers et al. (2014) observed two populations of cows that exhibit either high (>40 ng/mL; High A4) or low (<20 ng/mL; Low A4) concentrations of A4 within the fluid of the dominant follicle just prior to ovulation. High A4 cows had decreased reproductive rates and shorter times before falling out of the herd, but those that did produce calves weaned them ~10-kg heavier than their low A4 counterparts (Summers et al., 2014). It appears that the difference in weights is due to faster growing and more efficient skeletal muscle. High A4 cows share many characteristics with women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), whose high levels of circulating androgens are associated with changes in body composition (Kirchengast and Huber, 2001).

Rainwater Harvesting System Scenario Analysis On Runoff Reduction Potential In Surabaya, Indonesia: A Geospatial Analysis For Brantas Hilir Watershed, Putri Sukmahartati Apr 2018

Rainwater Harvesting System Scenario Analysis On Runoff Reduction Potential In Surabaya, Indonesia: A Geospatial Analysis For Brantas Hilir Watershed, Putri Sukmahartati

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Global warming has become an environmental concern over the past several decades and its impact on the water cycle is very crucial to the well-being of the human population. In the hydrological cycle, water evaporates by the heat of the sun and atmosphere, where it is accumulated in the atmosphere via clouds and it then falls as rain. With warmer temperatures, more intensive evaporation and downpours occur. In addition, impervious surfaces are increasing as a result of urban development. Those surfaces cause more water to flow faster into open water bodies, creating more extensive flooding, and additionally reducing water quality. …

Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Steers Fed With Two Levels Of Metabolizable Energy Intake During Summer And Winter Season, R A. Arias, J P. Keim, M Gandarillas, A Velasquez, C Alvarado-Gilis, T L. Mader

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Climate change is producing an increase on extreme weather events around the world such as flooding, drought and extreme ambient temperatures impacting animal production and animal welfare. At present, there is a lack of studies addressing the effects of climatic conditions associated with energy intake in finishing cattle in South American feed yards. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of environmental variables and level of metabolizable energy intake above maintenance requirements (MEI) on performance and carcass quality of steers. In each experiment (winter and summer), steers were fed with 1.85 or 2.72 times of their requirements of …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Cyberbiosecurity is being proposed as a formal new enterprise which encompasses cybersecurity, cyber-physical security and biosecurity as applied to biological and biomedical-based systems. In recent years, an array of important meetings and public discussions, commentaries and publications have occurred that highlight numerous vulnerabilities. While necessary first steps, they do not provide a systematized structure for effectively promoting communication, education and training, elucidation and prioritization for analysis, research, development, test and evaluation and implementation of scientific, technological, standards of practice, policy, or even regulatory or legal considerations for protecting the bioeconomy. Further, experts in biosecurity and cybersecurity are generally not aware …
