Javma37-43 Anthrax In Swine, L. Van Es Jan 1937

Javma37-43 Anthrax In Swine, L. Van Es

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Anthrax is not commonly considered so important a menace to swine as it is to other forms of live stock, in which the disease is apt to declare itself with terrifying severity. In comparison with the marked mortality frequently observed in cattle, the tangible losses caused by anthrax in swine seem negligible. As recent as 25 years ago, there still were observers who sincerely doubted the occurrence of the disease in hogs and this opinion found some support in the many reported failures to induce the infection in that animal species by artificial methods.

Crow-Waterfowl Relationships Based On Preliminary Studies On Canadian Breeding Grounds, E. R. Kalmbach Jan 1937

Crow-Waterfowl Relationships Based On Preliminary Studies On Canadian Breeding Grounds, E. R. Kalmbach

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

With the object of obtaining a current insight into the relationship of crows to waterfowl on their breeding grounds, a study was inaugurated in the spring of 1934 and continued through the nesting season of that and the following year. As originally planned, it called for field studies both in Canada and in the northern United States, but drought conditions had so drastically reduced the breeding population of ducks within our borders by the spring of 1934 that, after a futile effort to locate suitable areas in this country, plans were changed and the studies were restricted to Canadian areas …

Diseases Of Upland Game Birds, J. E. Shillinger, L. C. Morley Jan 1937

Diseases Of Upland Game Birds, J. E. Shillinger, L. C. Morley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Until recently the diseases of upland game birds received comparatively little specific study, except in a few outbreaks in which serious losses were observed. Though highly destructive, many of these outbreaks were of such short duration that the investigations undertaken were chiefly to learn the cause of death and usually were discontinued when losses were no longer noticeable. It has become increasingly evident, however, that every year great numbers of game birds die of disease, the decreases in their numbers frequently occurring in sections closed to hunting, even though food, cover, and other environmental conditions appear ideal. The disease problems …

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata Jan 1937

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Gizzard-worms of poultry, Cheiloapirura hamulosa, are nematodes occurring in the gizzards of chickens and turkeys.

Summary and Conclusions

Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown. Recent investigations by the writer have shown that the flour beetle, Tenebroides nana, and the sand hopper, Orchestia platensis, collected from poultry farms in the Territory of Hawaii have been found naturally infested with the infective larvae of the poultry gizzard-worm, Cheilospirura hamulosa. Out of 8 laboratory-raised chickens to which there were fed about 2,300 grasshoppers that had been collected in an endemic gizzard-worm area, …

Local Bird Refuges, W. L. Mcatee Jan 1937

Local Bird Refuges, W. L. Mcatee

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Birds appeal strongly to the interests and affections of mankind. Not only do they charm by their graceful forms, harmonious colors, sprightly actions, and usually pleasing notes, but they have an even more important claim upon our esteem because of their great economic value.

Birds feed upon practically all insect pests. They are voracious, are able .to move freely from place to place, and exert a steady influence in keeping down the swelling tide of insect life.

For economic as well as for esthetic reasons, therefore, an effort should be made to attract and protect birds and to increase their …

The Immunizing Value Of Commercial Hemorrhagic Septicemia Aggressins, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney Nov 1936

The Immunizing Value Of Commercial Hemorrhagic Septicemia Aggressins, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In 1924, Gochenour published the results of certain experiments which tended to show that what he regarded as a specific aggressin possessed an immunizing value against hemorrhagic septicemia. The aggressin he prepared, by the use of a highly virulent strain of Bacillus bipolaris, was described as having adequately protected seven bovine yearlings against inoculations with the same organism which, when injected into four yearlings, used as virus controls, proved fatal to them. Soon after, if not simultaneously with, the publication of the Gochenour articles, hemorrhagic septicemia aggressin was placed on the market and apparently has since then been sold …

Experiments On The Infectivity For Healthy Calves Of Bovine Tubercle Bacilli Discharged In Dung Upon Pasture, E. C. G. Maddock Oct 1936

Experiments On The Infectivity For Healthy Calves Of Bovine Tubercle Bacilli Discharged In Dung Upon Pasture, E. C. G. Maddock

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

In a previous paper (Maddock, 1934), it has been shown that healthy calves may be infected with bovine tubercle bacilli when grazed upon pasture infected at intervals with emulsions of the virulent organisms. These infections were designedly heavy, and it was felt that this orientating experiment should be followed by one in which pasture infection was secured in a way more closely approximating to the natural.
Three calves surviving from the previous experiment had reacted strongly to the double intradermal tuberculin test. Microscopic examination of the dung of these animals failed to show the presence of acid-fast bacilli, but to …

Swine Erysipelas, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath Aug 1936

Swine Erysipelas, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Because of the more or less frequent occurrence of swine erysipelas on Nebraska farms it seemed proper that information on this subject be made available in the form of a Station publication, especially written to serve as a reference for veterinarians, who naturally are first appealed to when an as yet relatively strange disease appears among a herd of swine. Hence the text is written in a technical form for the sake of precision. In the preparation of the text the literature of countries in which for many years the disease has constituted a permanent problem has been freely consulted. …

Reports From "Drought Front" Tell State Or Vegetation, J. E. Weaver Jul 1936

Reports From "Drought Front" Tell State Or Vegetation, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Development of the natural prairie vegetation is an excellent indicator of the intensity of drought. The extreme drought of 1934 left many bare areas in the grasslands and all but swept away most of the least drought-resistant species. The dry early spring and later summer of 1935 witnessed great increases in needlegrass, western wheat grass, and the invasion of a host of weeds. The favorable spring of 1936 promoted an abundant growth and emphasized the great changes in the prairie flora.
