Ecological Studies In A Midwestern Range: The Vegetation And Effects Of Cattle On Its Composition And Distribution, J. E. Weaver, G. W. Tomanek Apr 1951

Ecological Studies In A Midwestern Range: The Vegetation And Effects Of Cattle On Its Composition And Distribution, J. E. Weaver, G. W. Tomanek

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

There is continued need for a better understanding of range vegetation and its use by range animals. Range preservation and improvement in the midwest are largely matters of wise use and proper management of our natural grasslands. A more comprehensive understanding of the range itself is needed--its forage, soil, and water supply, and factors influencing a proper distribution of livestock. The degree of utilization of forage that will result in the maintenance of excellent or good range condition and the improvement of a range in fair condition should be ascertained. Soil conservation on range lands is accomplished primarily by improvement …

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xiii. The Effect Of Additions Of Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal To High Corn Chick Rations, C. W. Ackerson, R. L. Borchers, F. E. Mussehl Jan 1951

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xiii. The Effect Of Additions Of Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal To High Corn Chick Rations, C. W. Ackerson, R. L. Borchers, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Feeding trials were conducted on three groups of chicks in eight lots receiving a growing mash containing dehydrated alfalfa meal at levels of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, and 15 per cent. Comparisons were not made simultaneously but no general trend toward growth depression was evident in comparable lots. In addition duplicate trials of four lots of newly hatched New Hampshire chicks were made on pelleted rations carrying 0, 2, 4, and 6 per cent of a good quality dehydrated alfalfa meal. The chicks were all fed accurately known amounts of the pelleted rations for six weeks. …

Process Versus Power: Studies In Modern Culture, Eugene N. Anderson Jan 1951

Process Versus Power: Studies In Modern Culture, Eugene N. Anderson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The essays in this volume are concerned with the culture of a period of profound change. They are intended to serve the practical purpose of estimating what is the present state of our culture, what are its potentialities, and what are the major obstacles to the achievement of a good life. They deal above all with the problem of the character and the enemies of our industrial culture, in the hope of counteracting pessimism caused by desire for immediate perfection.

We live in a period of such cultural diversity as man has never known. Within the past half century or …

The Sedimentation Rate Of Potato Yellow-Dwarf Virus, M. K. Brakke, L. M. Black, Ralph W. G. Wyckoff Jan 1951

The Sedimentation Rate Of Potato Yellow-Dwarf Virus, M. K. Brakke, L. M. Black, Ralph W. G. Wyckoff

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

BLACK et al. (1948) have published electron micrographs of bodies believed to represent the New York variety of potato yellow-dwarf virus (Aureogenus vastans (H) Black) (Holmes 1948). The photographs showed bodies in several different extracts of infected plants of Nicotiana rustica L., but not in corresponding preparations from healthy plants. Similar bodies were found in concentrates from plants infected with the New Jersey variety of the virus (var. agalliae Black). These bodies were larger than, and of a different character from, those of plant viruses hitherto examined in the electron microscope. The present study was undertaken to obtain evidence …

Hydatid Disease (Echinococcosis) In Alaska And The Importance Of Rodent Intermediate Hosts, Robert L. Rausch, Everett L. Schiller Jan 1951

Hydatid Disease (Echinococcosis) In Alaska And The Importance Of Rodent Intermediate Hosts, Robert L. Rausch, Everett L. Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Hydatid disease, caused by the larval form of a tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786), is of circumpolar distribution, but has not previously been considered to be of much public health significance in North America. It is the purpose of this paper to present observations on this disease in Alaska, with special reference to its transmission to humans.

Biotic Interrelationships Of Helminth Parasitism, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1951

Biotic Interrelationships Of Helminth Parasitism, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Biotic interrelationships in Alaska have so far suffered little from man's attempts to improve upon nature. As a result of these favorable circumstances, biological investigation in Alaska offers unusual opportunity for elucidating problems which can no longer be approached in the more populated parts of North America. One is very fortunate to have the opportunity of working under these conditions, since present trends indicate that Alaska is soon to go by the way of the great wildernesses which once existed in the United States and Canada.

Application Of X-Ray Technique To The Detection Of Internal Insect Infestation Of Grain, Max Milner, Milford R. Lee, Robert Katz Dec 1950

Application Of X-Ray Technique To The Detection Of Internal Insect Infestation Of Grain, Max Milner, Milford R. Lee, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

During the course of a comprehensive investigation of methods for the determination of internal insect infestation in commercial wheat, radiographic techniques have been developed at this station which provide satisfactory delineation of internal infestation. We have applied these techniques to the observation of the growth of such insects as granary weevil, Sitophilus granaries L., and rice weevil, Sitophilus oryza L., from the hatching of the egg within the kernel through larval and pupal growth to emergence as a mature insect. Although considerable detail is always lost in the reproduction of radiographs during engraving and printing, the accompanying figures (1, …
