Variability In The Electrophoretic Patterns Of Avian Serum Proteins, Charles G. Sibley, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1959

Variability In The Electrophoretic Patterns Of Avian Serum Proteins, Charles G. Sibley, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

It has been known for more than 50 years that particular proteins characterize every species of plant and animal and that phylogenetic relationships are reflected in protein structure. The first application of this fact to taxonomic studies was by Nuttall ( 1901; 1904) who used the precipitin reaction of immune sera to test degrees of relationship in over 500 species of animals. With refinements in technique have come many more serological studies and the results have justified the statement by Landsteiner (1945) that “chemical differences parallel the variation in structure” and hence are useful in classification.

Notes On The Prevalence Of Hydatid Disease In Alaskan Moose, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1959

Notes On The Prevalence Of Hydatid Disease In Alaskan Moose, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In conjunction with current moose-management studies in south-central Alaska; 124 pairs of lungs of moose (Alces alces) have been collected and examined for the presence of hydatid cysts, the larval stage of the cestode, Echinococcus granulosus. The lungs were collected in the Cook Inlet region between January 1, 1956 and January 1, 1958, mostly from animals accidentally killed by trains or cars.

The presence or absence of the tapeworm cyst was determined by visual inspection, palpation, and finally by sectioning the lungs into slices approximately % in. thick. Hydatid larvae do not always localize in the lungs …

Native Grassland Of Southwestern Iowa, J. E. Weaver Oct 1958

Native Grassland Of Southwestern Iowa, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Studies of the prairie by the writer and Fitzpatrick during 1922-33 were both extensive and intensive. They were extensive in that they included an area of 60,000 sq. mi. in western Iowa, eastern Nebraska and portions of the four adjoining states. They were intensive in that a record of the kinds and distribution of grasses, the abundance and relative importance of forbs, and other pertinent data were ascertained and recorded separately for each of 135 selected areas. Since most of these prairies were examined two or more times each growing season, and many repeatedly during a five-year period, a clear, …

Fm 3-130, U.S. Army Chemical, Biological And Radiological (Cbr) Intelligence, 1958, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

An appropriate alternative title for this manual would be “Chemical Corps Intelligence.” When this manual was issued the Chemical Corps was a bureau in the Headquarters, Department of the Army, headed by a general officer called the Chief Chemical Officer (CCO), as well as a branch of the army to which officers and enlisted men were appointed. Among the duties of the CCO were the development and supply of chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) weapons and equipment, the training of chemical units for service in the field, management of the careers of officers in the Chemical Corps branch, and the …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Birds On Middleton Island, Alaska, Robert L. Rausch Jul 1958

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Birds On Middleton Island, Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A survey of the birds of Middleton Island was made in June 1956. Forty-five species of birds were recorded. Of these, at least 16 species were breeding, four other species were possibly breeding, and 2.5 species were regarded as transients. The distribution of the breeding birds was correlated with six major ecological formations. Five of the latter were based on vegetational characteristics, while the rocky cliffs comprised the sixth.

The avian fauna of Middleton Island consists mainly of species found in the Prince William Sound region, to the north. An important exception was the Lapland Longspur, which previously has not …

The New Critics And The Language Of Poetry, C.E. Pulos Mar 1958

The New Critics And The Language Of Poetry, C.E. Pulos

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

One of the most remarkable phenomena in the literary world of the present century has been the revolution in taste accomplished by what has come to be known as "the new criticism." While 1. A. Richards is sometimes looked upon as the founder of this movement, I purpose to show that the imagists were its real founders. The imagists and the school of Richards may, of course, be treated as separate schools. But they may also be regarded, as I propose to regard them, as different phases of the same basic movement.

To include the imagists under the new criticism …

Le Roman De Flamenca: History And Literary Convention, Paul A. Olson Jan 1958

Le Roman De Flamenca: History And Literary Convention, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

That Le Roman de Flamenca is ultimately concerned with the history of heterodox culture in Provence during the thirteenth century has been both affirmed and denied by competent Provencal scholars. To complicate matters, the earliest work to suggest relationships between history and this romance, a study by Paul Grimm, attempted to show that the final tournament has to do with ambiguous events which took place between 1196 and 1200.2 If the Provencal past has a bearing on Flamenca, it is important that we should understand just what aspects of that epoch the poem treats and from what point of …

Physics, Chapter 21: Vibrations And Sound, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 21: Vibrations And Sound, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

There are two aspects of sound: one is the physical aspect which involves the physics of the production, propagation, reception, and detection of sound; the other, which is the sensation of sound as perceived by the individual, depends upon physiological and psychological effects. It is not desirable to separate the two aspects of sound completely, but the main emphasis in this book must necessarily be on the physical aspect. In this chapter we shall consider mostly musical sounds. A vocabulary has been developed to describe the sensation experienced when a musical sound is heard. Such terms as the pitch of …

The Glory Trail: The Great American Migration And Its Impact On Natural Resources, Ernest Swift Jan 1958

The Glory Trail: The Great American Migration And Its Impact On Natural Resources, Ernest Swift

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Surprisingly few Americans have any definitive or comprehensive knowledge of the history of their country, although many are under the delusion that their school book history taught them all they needed to know.

They were indoctrinated with a smattering of dates which included the voyage of Columbus and the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth. They learned what Priscilla said to John Alden, gloated over the Boston Tea Party and memorized part of Patrick Henry's speech; they were briefed on Bunker Hill, Washington crossing the Delaware and the Surrender of Cornwallis. And that just about completed that era.

Daniel Roone's …

Soil Aggregation By Microorganisms Following Soil Fumigation, T. M. Mccalla, Francis A. Haskins, R. D. Curley Jan 1958

Soil Aggregation By Microorganisms Following Soil Fumigation, T. M. Mccalla, Francis A. Haskins, R. D. Curley

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The influence of autoclaving and of fumigation with eight chemical formulations upon microbial numbers in straw-amended Peorian loess and the extent to which these treatments affect the degree of aggregation brought about by subsequently introduced inocula were determined. A mixed soil flora, Stachybotrys atra and a blank inoculum consisting of sterile salt solution, were compared. Only in the autoclaved soil was a mixed soil flora inoculum consistently superior to the blank inoculum in promoting aggregation of the Peorian loess. It was found that inoculation with S. atra could greatly increase the aggregation of fumigated Peorian loess in treatments where the …
