Nebraska State and Local Taxes in Perspective (E. B. Schmidt)
Last month we showed how overwhelmingly important the property tax is in the financing of state and local governments in Nebraska. If we are to see Nebraska's state and local finances in perspective, we may compare our state with all states with respect to the percentage of state and local tax revenue obtained from the various tax sources. Of even greater value would be a comparison with our neighbor states. Such is the purpose of this investigation.

Growth of Nebraska Homegrown Industries (Dorothy Switzer)
Nebraska is still in need of some impetus to change its sluggish performance in the field of employment and to offset or absorb the continued exodus in agriculture, as was pointed out in an article on the state employment situation in the October issue of Business in Nebraska. In many Nebraska communities precisely this impetus has been given by the ingenuity and business acumen of men and women who have developed homegrown industries. The story of some of these industries was told in the February, 1966, issue and elicited much interest not only …

Commercial Farm Law: The Uniform Commercial Code, Thomas B. Allington, Clayton K. Yeutter
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Commercial law includes such topics as sales contracts, notes, checks, shipping and storage documents, and a variety of financing instruments. Over the years much of the law on these topics has become complex, confusing, and often obsolete. The Uniform Commercial Code, or U.C.C., is designed, first, to bring about uniformity in state laws governing commerce, and second, to clarify, simplify, and modernize these laws. The Code's success in this respect is shown by the fact that it has now been adopted by almost all states. It became effective in Nebraska on September 2, 1965. Drafting of the U.C.C. dates back …

Behavior Of The Australian Musk Duck And Blue-Billed Duck, Paul A. Johnsgard
Behavior Of The Australian Musk Duck And Blue-Billed Duck, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Sexual displays of the Musk Duck and Blue-billed Duck are described and illustrated. The displays of male Musk Ducks comprise a series of three forms exhibiting increasing ritualization, complexity, and time-interval constancy. All of them have conspicuous auditory characteristics as well as variously conspicuous visual features. Displays in the species appear to have evolved under the influence of intense sexual selection resulting from what is probably a more completely promiscuous mating system than occurs in any other species of Anatidae. These selective pressures have also probably promoted the evolution of such features as large size and extreme sexual dimorphism that …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Many beef cattle breeders in the United States and other countries are following the progress of the selection experiment at the Fort Robinson Beef Cattle Research Station, Crawford, Nebraska. Three lines of Hereford cattle from the same genetic foundation are under selection. Line 21 is selected for 200-day weight. Line 22 is selected for yearling weight. Line 23 is selected for an index combining yearling weight and a score for muscling and fat thickness.
Each line is operated as a closed herd so it will be possible to determine how much improvement in economic traits can be made by selecting …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
An experiment was designed using 30 Yorkshire pigs to study the influence of slaughter weight and feed restriction on carcass cut-out data and to relate these physical measurements to the chemically-determined proximate components. As slaughter weight increased from 79 to 102 kg., the percent of all lean cuts decreased significantly, while that of fat cuts and back-fat thickness increased significantly. Absolute amounts of both fat and lean cuts increased with slaughter weight. Feed restriction significantly increased most of the lean parameters studied and reduced the fat measurements. It increased percent of head and reduced the percent of offal (gastrointestinal tract …
Trichinosis, Usda
Trichinosis, Usda
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Trichinosis is a disease that is caused by small threadlike worms called trichinae. I It is not catching. People get trichinosis when they eat raw or underdone pork that contains trichinae. Few of the millions of hogs killed each year for food have living trichinae in their muscles, but, since there are some, you should never eat pork that is not properly cooked. Cooking pork throughout kills the worms.

Changes In Fungi With Age I. Chemical Composition Of Rhizoctonia Solani And Sclerotium Bataticola , David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The chemical composition of the mycelium of Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium bataticola was determined in cells of various ages. The percentage, per unit of dry weight, of soluble amino nitrogen, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), ergosterol, and protein decreased with age in both fungi. Total lipids and fatty acids increased with age in S. bataticola but remained constant in R. solani. Total carbohydrate increased with age in R. solani and decreased in S. bataticola. Fewer changes with age were observed when the results were calculated in ratio to DNA. There was no change in the ratios of protein, …

Changes In Fungi With Age Ii. Respiration And Respiratory Enzymes Of Rhizoctonia Solani And Sclerotium Bataticola, James L. Van Etten, H. Peter Molitoris, David Gottlieb
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The rate of respiration of Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium bataticola decreased with age. This decrease in respiratory rate might be produced by a decrease in the specific activity of one or more enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Specific activities in cell-free extracts were measured for most of the enzymes in the hexose monophosphate shunt, Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and terminal electron-transport system. In addition, glucose oxidase, isocitritase, and malic enzyme were measured. In R. solani, increases in activity with age occurred for hexokinase, α-glycerolphosphate dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, and cytochrome oxidase. Decreases occurred for phosphohexokinase, aconitase, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-specific …

Inheritance Of Behavioral Characters In F2 Mallard X Pintail (Anas Platyrhynchos L. X Anas Acutas L.) Hybrids, Roger S. Sharpe, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
The present study was undertaken to compare the inheritance of behavioral and morphological features of two closely related species of Anas, and to attempt to establish whether any significant degree of behavioral variation occurs in the second generation which could be attributed to these genetic processes.
Two closely related species of Anas, the Common Mallard (A. p. platyrhynchos) and the Common Pintail (A. a. acuta), were selected for study. Both species have been repeatedly hybridized in captivity (GRAY, 1958; PHILLIPS, 1915, 1921), and occasionally hybrids occur in the wild. MAYR (1963) has commented on the …

Corrections In Transition, Myrl E. Alexander
Nebraska Law Review
Imprisonment, as it is used today in this country and in others throughout the world, began as an experiment in punishment and reformation less than 200 years ago. It is still an experiment, and, unfortunately, it will remain an experiment for a long time to come. As a means of punishment and as an instrument with which to change criminal behavior, imprisonment still is a failure when it must be acknowledged that even among the best correctional institutions at least thirty per cent of their inmates become repeaters. Why is this so? Is it that prisons and other correctional institutions, …

Factors Affecting Nesting Success Of The Canvasback In The Aspen Parklands, Jerome H. Stoudt
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The Minnedosa study area is located in the southwestern portion of Manitoba just south of the town of Minnedosa. It is 90 square miles in size and roughly square in shape. The Aspen Parkland, in which the study area is located, is characterized by gently rolling terrain and black soils. Mixed farming is the rule with emphasis on small grain production consisting of wheat, barley, and oats. Roughly 50 percent of the water areas in the parkland are ringed with aspen, Populus tremuloides, and large blocks of aspen are interspersed throughout the area. The Minnedosa area differs because of …
