Improvement Of Beef Cattle Through Breeding Methods. Summary Of Results From Regional Project Nc-1, Larry V. Cundiff, Keith E. Gregory
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This publication is a revision of North Central Regional Publication 120, published by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station (Research Bulletin 196) in July, 1961. It summarizes the more important results from this project during its first 19 years of operation. It is by no means complete and includes only what is considered to be the "highlights" of findings at this time. A bibliography of all publications that provided the basis for this summary statement is included. This publication is in the nature of a progress report on many aspects of beef cattle breeding research. Although it is based on considerably …
Selection Of Dairy Cows For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton
Selection Of Dairy Cows For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Selection of dairy cows for economic merit requires the use of a model for genetic merit that involves the cross-product of the genetic values for milk and milk fat percentage. A linear and a quadratic index are described as procedures for selection of cows, the linear index being b1pm + b2pt and the quadratic index being b1pm + b2pt + b2pm2 + b4pt2 + b5pmpt where pm and pt are the phenotypic deviations …

Distributional Changes And Interaction Between Prairie Chickens And Sharp-Tailed Grouse In The Midwest, Paul A. Johnsgard, Robert E. Wood
Distributional Changes And Interaction Between Prairie Chickens And Sharp-Tailed Grouse In The Midwest, Paul A. Johnsgard, Robert E. Wood
Papers in Ornithology
The "prairie grouse" of North America present an interesting example of the effects of human activities on breeding distribution patterns of birds, with resulting changes in geographic distribution and spacial isolation. Thus, the Heath Hen (Tympanuchus cupido cupido) was one of the most familiar birds to the early colonists, who relied heavily on it for food. Ultimately, loss of habitat caused the Heath Hen's extinction. When the vast tall-grass prairies west of the Appalachians were settled, Greater Prairie Chickens (T. c. pinnatus) were probably more plentiful, and greatly increased as woods were cleared and grain crops supplemented native grasses. With …
Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Differences between daughter-dam and paternal sib estimates of heritability of first lactation milk yield have not been explained for New York data. Deviations of first lactation records from herdmate means of 155,070 artificially sired Holsteins were analyzed to examine the effect of unequal within group variances on the paternal sib estimate of heritability. The statistical model used to describe the data was yy = μ + si + eiy with σ 2yi = σ 2s + = σ2ei. Estimates of the within sire-group variances, σ1 2ei, were heterogeneous (P …

Problems Of Epidemiological Geography (Report Viii): Structure Of A Zoonosis Nosoareal, I.I. Yelkin, V.K. Yaschkul
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The Main structural indices of a nosoareal are the focalress in the distribution of infectious diseases of man and their causative agents. The problem of the focalness of infections has been developed for quite a long time in the field of parasitology and is a very important division of contemporary epidemiology (Ye. N. Pavlovskiy, 1939, 1944, 1955, 1960, 1961, 1964; L. V. Gromashevskiy, 1941, 1949, 1965; I. I. Yelkin, 1951, 1960, 1962; P. A. Petrishcheva, 1955, 1959, 1965; V. N. Beklemishev, 1956, 1959, 1961; Yu. The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
The courtship of ducks is unusual in several aspects. In temperate zones it generally begins very early, usually on the wintering grounds, so courtship is not a manifestation of territorial proclamation and defense as is the case with many songbirds. Nor, because of its early initiation, is courtship closely correlated with gonad growth and fertilization; rather, pair formation is normally completed prior to the period of maximum gonadal activity. Therefore, reproductive behavior in ducks may be conveniently divided into an early phase of conspicuous displays associated with actual pair formation, followed by the later and less elaborate behavior patterns concerned …

Exports of Nebraska Manufacturers (Dorothy Switzer)
Total exports of manufactured goods from Nebraska amounted to almost 55 million dollars in 1966, according to data revealed recently in the revised published report of a study made by the Bureau of the Census of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Figures from Nebraska fully confirm the spectacular increase in exports of the state's manufactured products reported in the August, 1967, issue of Business in Nebraska, and based on data collected in a Bureau of Business Research survey of a sample of Nebraska manufacturers. The national study also corroborates the local survey as …

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal
United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications
The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. We shall briefly describe subsequent events under four headings: (1) Medical Zoology in Egypt, (2) Ticks and Tickborne Diseases of the World, (3) Kala Azar in …

Weight Gain And Carcass Measurements Of Pigs From Gilts Fed Adequate Vs. Protein-Free Diets During Gestation, W. G. Pond, J. A. Dunn, G. H. Wellington, J. R. Stouffer, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Fifty-two weanling pigs from six litters(Pond et al., 1968) were fed a standard 18% protein corn-soybean meal diet from weaning to slaughter. The six litters were from gilts paired on the basis of parturition date so that one gilt fed the control diet and one fed the “protein-free” diet (0.5% protein) from week 4 of pregnancy to parturition made tip each pair. Each dam was fed the control diet throughout lactation and nursed one-half of her own litter and one-half of a pairmate’s litter resulting from reciprocal transfer of one-half of each litter at birth. Individual bodyweight gains and feed …

Relationships Among The Parameters Of Milk Production, Constituent Production, And Constituent Percentage, J. W. Wilton, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A method of finding the parameters pertaining to one of the variables of milk production, constituent production, and constituent percentage when the parameters pertaining to the two other variables are known is presented. The method is based on the expectation of products of random variables. This method and the delta approximation method are compared to sampling estimates from simulated data.

Role of Homegrown Industries in the Nebraska Economy (Dorothy Switzer)
Because the exodus from farm to city is continuing in Nebraska, it is necessary that industrial development to accelerated to provide employment for displaced agricultural workers who will have to migrate to other states unless suitable work can be provided for them here. From time to time Business in Nebraska has called attention to the state's homegrown industries that provide employment opportunities for significant numbers of workers. These articles have invariably elicited much interest and evoked requests for other success stories about innovative Nebraska enterprises.
