Holotypes Of Recent Mammals In The Museum Of Natural History, The University Of Kansas, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Various museums in recent years have published lists of type specimens housed in their collections. Such lists provide a useful point of reference for systematists and, for that reason, have been encouraged by the International Council of Museums. In 1968, that organization issued "A preliminary list of catalogues of type specimens in zoology and palaeontology," compiled by A. W. F. Banfield, and a revised list is planned for 1971. This catalogue of holotypes of mammals in the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History is particularly appropriate for the present volume, because Professor E. Raymond Hall was directly responsible for …

Phlyctainophora Squali Sp. Nov. (Nematoda, Philometridae) From The Spiny Dogfish, Squalis Acanthias, Dwight R. Mudry, Murray D. Dailey

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Summary

Phlyctainophora squali sp. nov. is described from 23 female specimens recovered from the subcutaneous tissue of one of 440 Squalis acanthias caught off Los Angeles, California. This finding represents a new host and distribution for this genus. Phlyctainophora is placed in the family Philometridae on the basis of atrophication of vulva and anus, simple mouth, viviparity and location in tissue of fishes. The family diagnosis for Philometridae is amended to include Phlyctainophora which lacks an anterior ovary.

Animal Performance On Crested Wheatgrass Pastures During May And June, Fort Rock, Oregon, D. W. Hedrick, W. M. Moser, A. L. Steninger, R. A. Long

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Average animal performance data of 1.5 lb/animal daily gain, two calendar months of grazing, and 20 lb/acre gain were obtained from 5 years of using crested wheatgrass under a 2-crop (May) and 1-crop (June) system of grazing. Regrowth was obtained on early use (2-crop) pastures in only 2-out of the 5 years. Extension of results to users was hastened by involving ranchers, a county agent, and a federal agency manager in the study.

The Chemistry Of Pesticides, Walter R. Benson Jun 1969

The Chemistry Of Pesticides, Walter R. Benson

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

Introduction

This review is limited to the structures and a few reactions of the pesticides mainly insecticides-that affect mammalian systems and that are the subject of papers by other authors in this monograph. There is no attempt to give a complete review of the chemistry of pesticides. It is intended only to show the breadth and depth of pesticide chemistry through the use of examples. With proper use of the references, and of the papers by Crosby, Freed and Montgomery, and Owens in this monograph, the reader will be able to find information for other chemicals.

Contamination In Denta Sweetclover During Successive Generations Of Seed Increase, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Jun 1969

Contamination In Denta Sweetclover During Successive Generations Of Seed Increase, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Contamination levels observed in the breeder, foundation, and certified seed generations of 'Denta' sweetdover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were 0.71, 1.69, and 3.62%, respectively, as measured by the frequency of plants high in content of o-hydroxycinnamic acid. Based on a sample of plants tested simultaneously for o-hydroxycinnamic acid content and ,β-glucosidase activity, a small but consistent decrease in the frequency of cu plants occurred with succeeding seed generations, while shifts in the frequency of b plants were not consistent in magnitude or direction. Contamination through cross-pollination with CuCuBB plants may be the major factor responsible for the observed decreases in …

Review Of Waterfowl In Australia By H. J. Frith, Paul A. Johnsgard Jun 1969

Review Of Waterfowl In Australia By H. J. Frith, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Our dearth of knowledge concerning Australian waterfowl has, until recently at least, been so severe as to once stimulate Ernst Mayr to write a paper (Emu, 45:229-232, 1946) reminding Australians how little was then known about their native waterfowl. The situation was especially serious in view of the fact that no fewer than six of Australia’s 19 species of indigenous waterfowl represent monotypic genera that are largely or entirely restricted to that continent. Furthermore, these include such phylogenetically significant and taxonomically controversial genera as Anseranas, Cereopsis, Malacorhynthus, and Stictonetta, the last two of which have never been available …

Taxonomy Of The Common Dolphins Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean, Richard C. Banks, Robert L. Brownell Jr. May 1969

Taxonomy Of The Common Dolphins Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean, Richard C. Banks, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Delphinus bairdii Dall is a species of dolphin distinct from D. delphis Linnaeus, with which it has usually been synonymized. D. bairdii has a longer rostrum relative to the zygomatic width of the skull; the ratio of these measurements falls at 1.55 or above for bairdii and 1.53 and below for delphis. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, D. bairdii is found in the Gulf of California and along the west coast of Baja California, Mexico; D. delphis is presently found in the waters off California. Until approximately the beginning of the present century, bairdii occurred farther north in the …

Transferable Drug Resistance Among Enterobacteriaceae Isolated From Human Urinary Tract Infections, Donna G. Sieckmann, Norman D. Reed, Carl E. Georgi May 1969

Transferable Drug Resistance Among Enterobacteriaceae Isolated From Human Urinary Tract Infections, Donna G. Sieckmann, Norman D. Reed, Carl E. Georgi

Papers in Microbiology

Fifteen sulfonamide-resistant cultures isolated from urinary tract infections in eastern Nebraska were screened for transferable drug resistance by three methods. Seven of the 15 resistant cultures could transfer resistance of varying levels to two or more chemotherapeutic agents. Transfer of drug resistance occurred without accompanying transfer of chromosomal traits and required cell to cell contact. In mixed culture, the number of drug-resistant recipients increased exponentially, reaching a plateau 2 hr after mixing. Spontaneous or artificial elimination of resistance was found to be a rare event. In addition, several drug-sensitive isolates from urinary tract infections were shown to be competent recipients …

An Ecological Study Of Timberline And Alpine Areas, Mount Lincoln, Park County, Colorado, Irving H. Blake, Abigail K. Blake Apr 1969

An Ecological Study Of Timberline And Alpine Areas, Mount Lincoln, Park County, Colorado, Irving H. Blake, Abigail K. Blake

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

During the short alpine growing season of 1945 the authors had the opportunity of studying conditions and biota on Mount Lincoln, Park County, Colorado, in an attempt to evaluate the ecological conditions and animal communities of the area. Of the large amount of taxonomic and ecological zoology published on the state, most has been in the field of autecology, and, except in the province of aquatic studies, little has appeared bearing on synecological relations, especially among invertebrates. The marked differences between the physiography, climatology, and biology of timberline, alpine, and other stations seemed to offer a field well worthy of …

Changes In Body Weight And Composition Of Adult Nongravid Female Rats Deprived Of Dietary Protein, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., C. F. Eisenhard, J. R. O'Connor

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Seventy-six young adult nongravid female rats of the Carworth strain were used in two experiments to study the effect of dietary protein deprivation on body weight, feed consumption, body composition and serum protein concentration. Semipurified diets containing glucose, corn oil, vitamins and minerals with or without casein (protein-free = PF, 14% casein = C) were fed ad libitum in both experiments to rats caged in individual wire-bottom cages. Feeding the PF diet for up to 26 days resulted in a continuous weight loss over the entire period. The average loss in body weight as a percentage of initial weight of …

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus Mar 1969

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Neonatal calf diarrhea typical of that seen in field cases was produced in colostrum-deprived calves by inoculating either feces or bacteria-free filtrates via the duodenum, orally, or by a spray (aerosol). Three calves, kept free of E. coli, developed severe diarrhea following inoculation with a bacteria-free filtrate. Intense fluorescence in the epithelium of sections of small intestine from two experimental calves was observed following staining with ftuorescein-labeled gamma globulin produced with viral antigen prepared from the feces of two experimental diarrhetic E. coli-free calves. Fluorescing cells were also present in the feces of experimental and field cases of neonatal …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

These investigations were undertaken to determine the distribution and importance of Trogoderma glabrum (Herbst) in stored grain in Nebraska, the ecological factors favoring population increase in stored wheat, corn, and sorghum, and the role T. glabrum might play in disseminating internally the Aspergillus molds commonly encountered in stored grain.

Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty Feb 1969

Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium L.) is a native of Eurasia. Scotch thistle is found in the grasslands of central Nebraska, with heaviest infestations in Gosper, Dawson, and Valley Counties and limited occurrence in 18 additional counties. The Nebraska Unicameral declared it a noxious weed in 1965. This study measures the effects of some environmental factors on scotch thistle germination and seedling growth, and clarifies some of the interactions of these with inherent characteristics of the achene. The effect of achene coat, stratification, light, temperature, growth regulators, pH, depth of planting, salinity, germination inhibitors, and moisture stress were studied.

Relationship Between Type Traits And Longevity Of Daughters Of Hew York Holstein Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. B. Filkins, H. W. Carter, C. L. Hart

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The percentage of 40 or more daughters having four lactations of 81 New York Holstein artificially insemination sires was correlated with the percentage of daughters in 66 type categories measured in the first lactation and their average first-lactation milk yield. Multiple regression on these type and production traits accounted for 92% of the variation in percentage of daughters having four lactations. A subset of 33 traits accounted for 82% of the variation. Traits with the largest standard partial regressions for longevity were milk production (.41), udder edema (.87 and .71), deep body (.53), medium upstandingness (.41), fore udder attachment (--.86 …

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris Jan 1969

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.
