American Sculpture, Norman A. Geske Jan 1970

American Sculpture, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The occasion for the present exhibition, the dedication of the Sheldon Sculpture Garden, marks the completion of one of the most important gifts ever made to the University of Nebraska and to the people of the state. The importance of the gift lies not only in the fact of the distinguished building and the art objects which it houses, but also in the fact of their presence as a potential, a place and a situation where the creative spirit, traditional and activist, may find a laboratory, a workshop and an audience.

The garden is first of all a physical enlargement …

Influence Of Dietary Supplements Of Cholesterol And Vitamin D On Certain Components Of The Blood And Body Of Growing-Finishing Swine, M. H. Jurgens, E. R. Peo, Jr. Jan 1970

Influence Of Dietary Supplements Of Cholesterol And Vitamin D On Certain Components Of The Blood And Body Of Growing-Finishing Swine, M. H. Jurgens, E. R. Peo, Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The American public has been made extremely conscious of the concept that saturated fat and cholesterol may be involved in atherosclerosis in man. Likewise, because of their content of cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, animal products have become engrossed in a controversy concerning their role in the atherogenic process. No definite conclusions have been made in this area and until further research advances in the field of atherosclerosis, the animal scientist may have to concern himself with modifying the animal product in such a way that it will be more acceptable to the American public. The degree to which this …

A Summary Of Intergeneric New World Quail Hybrids, And A New Intergeneric Hybrid Combination, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1970

A Summary Of Intergeneric New World Quail Hybrids, And A New Intergeneric Hybrid Combination, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

The exceedingly close affinities of the quail genera Colinus, Callipepla, and Lophortyx have been recognized for some time and have recently been emphasized by additional morphological (Holman 1961; Hudson et al. 1966), biochemical (Sibley 1960), and pterylographic (Ohmart 1967) evidence. Indeed, Holman has suggested that these three taxa might best be regarded as subgenera. Phillips et al. (1964) pragmatically merged Lophortyx with Callipepla; and Delacour (1961-1962) synonymized not only Lophortyx, but also Oreortyx and Philortyx, with Callipepla, yet retained Colinus as a separate genus. Although Ohmart (1967) questioned the validity of generically separating Lophortyx and …

Mite Transmission Of Plant Viruses, G.N. Oldfield Jan 1970

Mite Transmission Of Plant Viruses, G.N. Oldfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The subject of mite transmission of plant viruses has been reviewed several times by Slykhuis (122, 124,126,128). A considerable number of papers on this subject have been published since Slykhuis's last review; several constitute significant additions to the knowledge of the relationships between mites and the plant viruses they transmit.

Except, perhaps, for the apparent case of transmission of potato virus Y by Tetranychus telarius (107), the only proven mite vectors of plant viruses are certain members of the family Eriophyidae. In 1927, Amos et al. (2) reported a positive correlation between the infestation of black currants with the black …

1970 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report, J. L. Adams, E. F. Frolik, H. W. Ottoson, F. E. Eldridge Jan 1970

1970 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report, J. L. Adams, E. F. Frolik, H. W. Ottoson, F. E. Eldridge

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The use of high concentrate rations in finishing cattle has led to a rather high loss of livers due to abscesses.

The 1967 Statistical Summary of the Federal Meat Inspection Service of the USDA indicated the total number of cattle inspected was 27,859,980. Of these, 9.6% were condemned because of liver abscess. Considering the value of a liver to be about $3, the estimated loss to the industry because of condemnatIon due to abscess would be over $8 million annually.

The incidence of liver abscesses increases as the roughage level in a finishing ration decreases below 5% (Table I). The …

A New Tribe Of Saber-Toothed Cats (Barbourofelini) From The Pliocene Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, Marian R. Schultz, Larry D. Martin Jan 1970

A New Tribe Of Saber-Toothed Cats (Barbourofelini) From The Pliocene Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, Marian R. Schultz, Larry D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new genus of Pliocene Saber-toothed felid, Barbourofelis, is proposed and two new species B. fricki and B. morrisi are described. These two forms and other described material represent an unusual lineage of felids with long sabers, shortened crania, and massive postorbital bars. The tribal name Barbourofelini is proposed for this lineage which is presently known in North America from deposits ranging in age from Clarendonian through Kimballian. The Barbourofelini apparently migrated from Eurasia to North America in the Late Miocene or Early Pliocene. Sansanosmilus of the French Vindobonian appears to represent the ancestral stock of these cats. The …

Effect Of Feeding-Fasting Interval On Finishing Pigs: Weight Gain, Feed Utilization And Physical And Chemical Carcass Measurements, T. L. Veum, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., L. Krook Jan 1970

Effect Of Feeding-Fasting Interval On Finishing Pigs: Weight Gain, Feed Utilization And Physical And Chemical Carcass Measurements, T. L. Veum, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., L. Krook

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Thirty-two Yorkshire pigs (49 kg body weight, 108 days of age) were used to determine the effect of feeding-fasting interval on rate of body weight gain, feed utilization and carcass and organ measurements at a slaughter weight of approximately 90 kilograms. Treatments were: (1) Continuous ad libitum feeding,(2) ad libitum 1 day, fasted on alternate days, (3) ad libitum 1 day, fasted 2 days, (4) ad libitum 1 day, fasted 3 days. Average daily gain was reduced progressively as severity of the fasting-feeding interval was increased. Efficiency of feed utilization, likewise, was reduced as the severity of feed restriction increased, …

Influence Of Dietary Supplements Of Vitamin D3 And Various Fats On Cholesterol And Fatty Acid Composition Of The Blood And Body Of Growing-Finishing Swine, M. H. Jurgens, E. R. Peo, Jr., P. E. Vipperman, Jr., R. W. Mandingo Jan 1970

W. Mandingo

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Previous work at this station suggested that vitamin D2, when fed with or without dietary cholesterol, depressed blood cholesterol levels of swine (Jurgens, Peo and Vipperman, 1967) and rats (Jurgens, Blunn and Peo, 1968). While not proven to be the cause, blood cholesterol levels have been used as one of the main criteria to estimate the development of atherosclerosis in man (Rabinowitz, Meyerson and Wohl, 1960; Swell, Law and Treadwell, 1962). Several investigators have reported that supplementation of unsaturated fats (Ahrens et al., 1957; Okey and Lyman, 1957; Avigan and Steinberg, 1958; Peifer, 1966) and especially linoleic …

Ec70-923 Care And Cooking Of Game Meats (Revised), Ethel Diedrichsen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Game meats, like domestic meats, are best when properly dressed and cooked. Good eating depends upon the treatment the animal receives when killed. For high quality meat, the animal should be promptly bled, dressed and cooked under sanitary conditions. Much good game is ruined because this procedure is not followed.

This Extension circular covers the handling of wild game and includes recipes for all wild game.
