Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
The Nebraska Sandhills comprise an area of about 20,000 square miles, extending from about 980 30' to 1030 . Northern and southern boundaries are parallel with the Niobrara and Platte River valleys, respectively. The Sandhills merge with the Loess Hills physiographic region at the southeast, resulting in irregular interfaces of low dunes with clay bluffs and canyons of the latter region (Elder, 1969).

An Evaluation Of Treatment Recommendations For The Greenbug, Schizaphis Graminum, On Susceptible Grain Sorghum In The Clay County, Nebraska Pest Management Project, Bruce John Monke
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
All fields involved in this study were located in Clay County, Nebraska and were farmed by cooperators in the Pest Management Project. Many of the field procedures were adapted from those used by the University of Nebraska Agronomy Department Outstate Testing Service. The purpose of this study was to examine, under Nebraska conditions, the accuracy of the currently accepted guidelines for determining the necessity of greenbug control on grain sorghum.
The data in this study do not support specific guidelines based only on greenbug populations or plant damage sustained due to greenbug feeding, for controlling greenbugs on susceptible grain sorghum. …
Flight Of The Sea Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Flight Of The Sea Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Their migration routes have been charted. Their breeding biology is known. Their eggs meat and feathers have long been used by man. But eiders at sea remain an enigma.
Nesting in colonies that can number hundreds of birds, the eiders are among the most conspicuous of tundra-breeding birds. Although female eiders are a study in grays and browns that match the arctic tundra, the males are most boldly patterned in black and white, with striking green head colors. When the nesting season ends, the birds disperse over the vastnesses of the northern oceans, out of range of most human observers. …

Bacteria In The Air Of Housed Swine Units, L.F. Elliot, T.M. Mccalla, J.A. Deshazer
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Two housed, swine-growing-finishing units were studied for numbers of total bacteria, fecal coliforms, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella in the air. At 30.5 and 122 cm from the floor, total colony-forming particles, as tested, averaged 3.4 x 10) and 1.3 x 105/m3 of air, respectively; whereas fecal coliform counts averaged 24 x 103 and 1.9 x 103/m3 of air, respectively. Only 41% of the organisms growing on Staphylococcus 110 medium tested as Staphylococcus. Of 458 Staphylococcus isolates, 5 were coagulase-positive. No Salmonella were detected in the air of the units tested.

Germ Plasm Evaluationprogram- Progress Report No. 4, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The cattle Germ Plasm Evaluation Program has been conducted in three cycles. Cycle I involved breeding Hereford, Angus, Jersey, South Devon, Limousin, Simmental and Charolais bulls by artificial insemination (AI) to Hereford and Angus cows to produce three calf crops (Cycle I, Phase2) in the spring of 1970, 1971 and 1972.
Cycle II, initiated with the 1972 breeding season, involved the Hereford and Angus cows used in the first cycle. These cows were bred by AI to Hereford, Angus, Red Poll, Brown Swiss, Ge1bvieh, Maine Anjou and Chianina sires to produce two calf crops (Cycle II, Phase2) in the spring …

Agricultural Change In An Urban Age, Richard G. Bremer
Agricultural Change In An Urban Age, Richard G. Bremer
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
AMERICAN LOCAL HISTORIES have traditionally focused upon the origins and early growth of communities while occasionally examining later periods of relative stability or renewed expansion. But many localities, particularly in rural areas, have undergone long periods of stagnation followed by decline and disintegration. These aspects of community existence have received much less attention and remain relatively unexplored. This is particularly true in the realm of agricultural history which in the United States has tended to steer away from the local history approach, especially when dealing with the dynamic changes of the twentieth century. The present volume represents a tentative effort …

Parasites Of California Marine And Estuarine Fish, Milton S. Love, Mike Moser
Parasites Of California Marine And Estuarine Fish, Milton S. Love, Mike Moser
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
While working on the parasites of several California marine fish, it was difficult to find out which parasites had been reported from our fish. Pertinent sources were scattered over a number of journals, covering many years. We compiled this list because we felt there was a need for a single source which would give all the parasites infecting California marine fish. As "marine fish" was a somewhat vague term, we decided to use it in a broad sense and included estuarine and anadromous fish in the survey. In addition, we have included records from landlocked populations of anadromous fish, such …

Social And Economic Constraints On Child Life Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper
Social And Economic Constraints On Child Life Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The usual approach in studies of socialization is to look at the interaction among cultural values, social structure, and child-training practices. The approach used here evolved during my two years in the field living with the !Kung, when it became clear to me that the major constraints on child life derived from the nature of adult work and from the organization of people in space. By the "nature of adult work" I refer to the hunting and gathering subsistence economy, to the rhythm of work routines, and to the accommodation to scarce and unevenly distributed water sources. By "organization of …
Effects Of Levels Of Crude Protein On Performance Of Growing Boars, W. G. Luce, R. K. Johnson, L. E. Walters
Effects Of Levels Of Crude Protein On Performance Of Growing Boars, W. G. Luce, R. K. Johnson, L. E. Walters
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Two trials involving 216 growing boars were conducted to study the effects of different levels of crude protein on daily gains, feed efficiency, feed intake and estimated carcass characteristics. The boars were fed either a 16, 18 or 20% crude protein ration from 23.8 to 55.8 kg (period 1). Upon completion of period 1, the protein level was reduced 2% for each treatment (14, 16 and 18%, respectively) from 55.8 to 99.6 kg (period 2). Average daily gain increased linearly (P<.01) and feed required per unit gain decreased quadratically (P<.05) as the percent protein in the diet increased from 16 to 20% in period 1 and 14 to 18% in period 2. Average daily feed intake was similar for boars on each treatment. Scanned backfat thickness decreased linearly (P<.01) and scanned longissimus muscle area increased linearly (P<.05) as protein in the diet increased.

Postweaning Performance And Carcass Merit Of Purebred And Two-Breed Cross Pigs, L. D. Young, R. K. Johnson, I. T. Omtvedt, L. E. Walters
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The feedlot records of 2,111 purebred and crossbred pigs representing all purebred and all possible two-way crosses of Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire were analyzed to evaluate average daily gain on test, age at 100 kg, average backfat probe of gilts, average daily feed consumption and feed conversion. A random sample of 392 barrows was used to evaluate carcass traits. The data were analyzed to determine breed of sire and breed of dam effects, to evaluate differences between reciprocal crosses and to estimate heterosis. Breed of sire and breed of dam effects were significant for many of the traits evaluated. Straightbred …
Federal Regulations Pertaining To Collection, Import, Export, And Transport Of Scientific Specimens Of Mammals, Hugh H. Genoways, Jerry R. Choate
Federal Regulations Pertaining To Collection, Import, Export, And Transport Of Scientific Specimens Of Mammals, Hugh H. Genoways, Jerry R. Choate
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The routine tasks of mammalogists whose research or curatorial activities include collecting, importing, processing, exporting, or interstate transporting of living or dead scientific specimens of mammals have become increasingly complicated by newly enacted (or more rigorously enforced) Federal regulations. These regulations were necessary largely because of the activities of non-scientists, but their provisions have had a tremendous impact on the activities of scientists (especially museum-based systematists and ecologists). Most mammalogists have expressed a willingness to comply with the regulations (although nearly all agree that administration of the permit system should be consolidated into a single office) if they can obtain …

A New Species Of Chiroderma From Guadeloupe, West Indies (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae), Robert J. Baker, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
During the course of a study of the bat faunas of the Caribbean islands we obtained a specimen of Chiroderma from the island of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles. The nearest known populations of this genus occur on Tobago and Trinidad (C. villosum and C. trinitatum). approximately 550 kilometers to the south. This specimen represents a distinct new species that appears to be most closely related to C. doriae and C. villosum. This new species is named and described.

Evaluating Germ Plasm For Beef Production, Cycle 1- Progress Report No. 3, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Because of the large number of combinations of production resources and variations in beef market requirements, one type of cattle will not be most efficient in all production systems. The wide spectrum of cattle types available in the world offers the opportunity of quickly matching genetic resources with production and market requirements. Characterization of available genetic resources for economically important traits is necessary if we are to use this opportunity wisely. Initially, change in production characteristics can be made more rapidly by using existing variation among breeds than by selecting within breeds. However, selection within breeds remains the primary method …

Hematologic parameters were studied in giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis Maxima), mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos) and various species of diving ducks at seasonal intervals throughout the year. Highest values for packed cell volume, hemoglobin content and erythrocyte counts were found in the winter and pre-nesting periods. Mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin varied inversely with these values.

Prevalence Of Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii In Wild And Domestic Animals Of New Mexico, Arizona And Colorado, Alan A, Marchiondo, Donald W. Duszynski, Gary O. Maupin
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Using the Sabin-Feldman dye test, sera from wild and domestic animals in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado were tested for the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii. The prevalence of positive titers (≥ 1:8) in animals from these areas was: New Mexico (178 of 569, 31%), Arizona (11 of 56, 20%), and Colorado (2 of 7, 29%). The overall prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma was 30% (191 of 632).
Nine of 17 fecal samples from wild zoo felines contained Toxoplasma-like oocysts which were inoculated per os and intraperitoneally into mice. Mice from six of these nine inoculations later …

7Sγ2b antibody was found attached to and in the integument of adult Schistosoma mansoni removed from CF1 white mice. With the techniques used, IgA, IgM, 7Sγ1, 7Sγ2a, 7Sγ3, and C3 complement were not found to be attached to the integumental surfaces. 7Sγ2b does not seem to fix C3, and it is suggested this antibody may be acting in enhancing and blocking roles which protect the worms from the host.
Wildlife And Vertebrate Pests In Egypt, A. Maher Ali, Hassana Hafez
Wildlife And Vertebrate Pests In Egypt, A. Maher Ali, Hassana Hafez
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 7th (1976)
The conservation of Egyptian wildlife is discussed. Control measures are reviewed for rodents and birds, especially the house sparrow. Because of the high dam permanent irrigation has resulted in Arvicanthis becoming a more serious invader of rural buildings.
