G81-574 Reproductive Diseases In Cattle, Duane Rice Jan 1981

G81-574 Reproductive Diseases In Cattle, Duane Rice

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The reproductive diseases mentioned in this NebGuide comprise some of the more common problems confronting the cattle industry today.

Although many advances have been made in controlling reproductive diseases in cattle, serious losses are still common. These losses can be reduced by recognizing the diseases and following the proper management recommendations that are available today. Nearly 50 percent of reproductive failure in cattle is due to infectious diseases, and there are vaccines available that can prevent some of these. Management recommendations may include: 1) vaccines, 2) general sanitation, 3) artificial insemination (AI) or, if a problem is already present, 4) …

Effectiveness Of Progeny Test Multiple-Trait Index Selection For Field Performance Of Strain-Cross Layers. I. Estimated Responses, T. S. Kashyap, G. E. Dickerson, G. L. Bennett Jan 1981

Effectiveness Of Progeny Test Multiple-Trait Index Selection For Field Performance Of Strain-Cross Layers. I. Estimated Responses, T. S. Kashyap, G. E. Dickerson, G. L. Bennett

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Selection for egg production and egg quality traits in five Leghorn strains was based on pedigreed strain-cross (TX) progeny performance. About 24,000 TX pullets from 400 sires and 2400 dams were tested at 20 to 40 locations each year from 1956 through 1969. The TX pullet performance averages for 16 traits were combined in a linear index to evaluate sires in male lines and dams in female lines. Dams in male lines and sires in female lines were evaluated on the basis of full-sibs' progeny. Selection emphasis was primarily on rate of lay, viability, and egg size and secondarily on …

Streptococcal Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock Jan 1981

Streptococcal Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Streptococcosis is a septicemic disease that affects both freshwater and saltwater fishes; it was first reported in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri (Hoshino et al. 1958). Additional outbreaks have since been described in cultured golden shiners (Notemigonus crysoleucas), yellowtails (Sepiola quinqueradiata), and eels (Anguilla japonious) , and in a variety of feral saltwater fishes.

Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, S. F. Snieszko Jan 1981

Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, S. F. Snieszko

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Bacterial gill disease (BGD) was first described by Davis (1926, 1927), who observed it in fry and fingerling brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) in hatcheries in Vermont. The affected trout were kept in dirt-bottom ponds and were not crowded; , daily mortalities were very low. Mortalities rapidly increased when the water temperature increased and diminished when the temperature decreased. Examination of the diseased trout revealed clubbing of gill filaments. In microscopic examination of wet mounts of the filaments" Davis found that the gill surface was covered with closely adhering strands of long, …

The Ethics Of Benedict De Spinoza, Translated By George Eliot, Benedict De [Baruch] Spinoza, George Eliot , Translator, Thomas Deegan , Editor Jan 1981

The Ethics Of Benedict De Spinoza, Translated By George Eliot, Benedict De [Baruch] Spinoza, George Eliot , Translator, Thomas Deegan , Editor

Electronic Reference Materials

The Ethics of Benedict (or Baruch) Spinoza (1632-1677) was written in Latin 1664-65 and published posthumously the year of his death. Spinoza's statement of moral philosophy, inspired by the rationalism of Descartes and the Enlightenment, was considered heretical at the time. He was excommunicated by Jewish religious authorities and his writings proscribed by the Catholic Church. His works, however, proved a hiden influence on the thought Locke, Hume, Liebnitz, and Kant, and became one of the foundations of the Western philosophical tradition, with profound influence on the works of Hegel, Goethe, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche.

George Eliot [Marian Evans] (1819-1880) prepared …

Effectiveness Of Progeny Test Index Selection For Field Performance Of Strain-Cross Layers. Ii. Predicted And Realized Responses, G. L. Bennett, G. E. Dickerson, T. S. Kashyap

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Selection for egg production and egg quality traits in two sets (TX1 and TX2) of pedigreed strain-cross White Leghorns was based on strain-cross progeny performance averaged over field environments. Retrospect index weightings, selection intensities, and genetic parameters were used to predict genetic responses in TX1 and TX2 for a 5-year period. Predicted genetic responses were compared with realized genetic responses.

Retrospect index weightings for 13 component traits showed less emphasis on early mortality (EMORT) and adult mortality (AMRT) and more emphasis on Haugh units and early shell texture than was intended. Selection intensity was about 1.5 o for males in …

G81-556 Using The California Mastitis Test (Cmt) To Detect Subclinical Mastitis, Duane N. Rice Jan 1981

G81-556 Using The California Mastitis Test (Cmt) To Detect Subclinical Mastitis, Duane N. Rice

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Apparently healthy cows can harbor subclinical mastitis, which creates tremendous loss in milk production. This NebGuide offers a method for detecting this disease.

The dairyman is generally aware of clinical mastitis because it can be seen as changes in the milk, swollen udder and other signs exhibited by the cow. Compared with subclinical mastitis, clinical mastitis is much less costly, is of short duration, tends to be an individual cow problem, and is detected without special tests.

Unfortunately, the apparently healthy cow can harbor subclinical mastitis, which creates tremendous loss in milk production. A cow with subclinical mastitis does not …

G81-541 The Home Laying Flock, Part I Getting Started, Earl W. Gleaves Jan 1981

G81-541 The Home Laying Flock, Part I Getting Started, Earl W. Gleaves

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide tells what is involved in starting a home laying flock.

Home egg operations have maintained popularity in Nebraska. These small flocks provide a means for producing high quality food at home. They also provide the opportunity for young people to learn the responsibility of caring for animals. A well planned, well managed home flock can be a source of personal pleasure and sometimes a source of low-cost eggs.

G81-581 Cross Fences For Pastures Under Center Pivot Irrigation, James T. Nichols Jan 1981

G81-581 Cross Fences For Pastures Under Center Pivot Irrigation, James T. Nichols

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses different types of fences for center pivot irrigated pastures.

Irrigated pastures produce more forage and maintain stands longer under a "graze-rest" system of use. When grazing is practiced season-long, cross fences are necessary to control 1) when and for how long grazing is permitted on a particular pasture, and 2) the degree of desired use. These controls are not possible without cross fences, and sound grazing management becomes difficult.

Chemical Treatment Of Wheat Straw, Gary Lesoing, Terry Klopfenstein, Ivan G. Rush, John Ward Jan 1981

Chemical Treatment Of Wheat Straw, Gary Lesoing, Terry Klopfenstein, Ivan G. Rush, John Ward

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

An in vitro digestion study, a lamb growth trial and a lamb digestion trial were conducted to evaluate the effect of different NaOH and Ca(OH)2 treatments on the energy availability of wheat straw. In vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) of wheat straw was increased 29% by chemical treatment with 1% NaOH plus 3% Ca(OH)2 and by as much as 86% by a 4% NaOH plus 1% Ca(OH)2 treatment. A significant amount of hemicellulose was solubilized by chemical treatment with NaOH and Ca(OH)2, but little cellulose was solubilized. Rate and extent of both hemicellulose and cellulose digestion of …

Giving-Up As A Poisson Process: The Departure Decision Of The Green Lacewing, Alan B. Bond Jan 1981

Giving-Up As A Poisson Process: The Departure Decision Of The Green Lacewing, Alan B. Bond

Alan Bond Publications

Predators that forage for aggregated prey appear to require a decision rule for determining the point at which to discontinue their search in a given prey patch and move on to another. Although the optimum rule depends heavily on features of the searching behavior of the predator and the distribution of the prey (Oaten 1977), most previous authors have assumed that the decision must involve an assessment of the capture rate within a patch and a comparison with the mean capture rate in the environment as a whole (Krebs 1978). When the perceived quality of the given patch becomes significantly …

Sire Evaluation By Only Extended Partial Milk And Fat Records, T. R. Famula, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1981

Sire Evaluation By Only Extended Partial Milk And Fat Records, T. R. Famula, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The standard of comparison for dairy production records is the 305-day lactation, and much research has been directed to estimating 305-day milk and fat records from incomplete or in-progress records. This study was to determine the effect of several methods of extending incomplete records on sire evaluation. Complete 305-day milk and fat records of first lactations of 73,724 daughters of 1,362 artificial insemination Holstein sires processed at the New York Dairy Records Processing Laboratory were used to compute sire proofs for yield of milk and fat. Partial records of two lengths (60 to 80 days and 130 to 160 days) …

Der Stand Der Hydrobiologischen Forschungen In Der Mongolischen Volksrepublik, Ayuur Dulmaa

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

First paragraph:
