Book Review: Animal Population Dynamics, Douglas H. Johnson, James W. Grier
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
This booklet is one of a series offered by the publisher as an alternative to a single textbook in ecology. Each is intended to be a self-contained and concise summary of some topic in ecology. This one attempts to cover a major subject in a few small (13 x 22 cm) pages. It achieves but limited success.

Expression Of A Streptococcus Mutans Glucosyltransferase Gene In Escherichia Coli, James P. Robeson, Raul G. Barletta, Roy Curtiss Iii
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Chromosomal DNA from Streptococcus mutans strain UAB90 (serotype c) was cloned into Escherichia coli K-12. The clone bank was screened for any sucrosehydrolyzing activity by selection for growth on raffinose in the presence of isopropyl- β-D-thiogalactoside. A clone expressing an S. mutans glucosyltransferase was identified. The S. mutans DNA encoding this enzyme is a 1.73-kilobase fragment cloned into the HindIII site of plasmid pBR322. We designated the gene gtfA. The plasmid-encoded gtfA enzyme, a 55,000-molecular-weight protein, is synthesized at 40% the level of pBR322-encoded β-lactamase in E. coli minicells. Using sucrose as substrate, the gtfA enzyme catalyzes …
Optimal Foraging Theory And The Psychology Of Learning, Alan Kamil
Optimal Foraging Theory And The Psychology Of Learning, Alan Kamil
Avian Cognition Papers
The development of optimization theory has made important contributions to the study of animal behavior. But the optimization approach needs to be integrated with other methods of ethology and psychology. For example, the ability to learn is an important component of efficient foraging behavior in many species, and the psychology of animal learning could contribute substantially to testing and extending the predictions of optimal foraging theory.
The Transmission Of Learned Behavior: An Observational Study Of Father-Child Interactions During Fishing, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond
The Transmission Of Learned Behavior: An Observational Study Of Father-Child Interactions During Fishing, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Mechanisms of transmission of learned behavior were described in terms of the behavioral interactions between fathers and their children as they fished from a pier on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Verbal and nonverbal behaviors were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis and the patterns of association in the behavioral repertoire were described in detail. Groupings of associated behaviors ranged from clusters suggestive of modeling or simple showing to complex combinations of behaviors involved in teaching. There were indications that the transmission behaviors varied with the content of the transmitted information and the role of the performer. Role differentiation in the transmission behaviors …
Visual Search And Selection Of Natural Stimuli In The Pigeon: The Attention Threshold Hypothesis, Alan B. Bond
Visual Search And Selection Of Natural Stimuli In The Pigeon: The Attention Threshold Hypothesis, Alan B. Bond
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
During visual search for samples of varying proportions of familiar, natural food grains displayed against a complex gravel background, pigeons exhibited “matching selection,” a tendency to overselect the more common grain. The matching selection effect was decreased at low levels of stimulus/background contrast and reversed when the grains were highly conspicuous. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that stimulus detectability should be enhanced by recent experience with a particular grain type, but they showed no convincing indications of a corresponding effect on the response criterion. An explanatory model, termed the attention threshold hypothesis, argues that the mean latency of …
Reversible Dark-Induced Senescence Of Soybean Root Nodules, N. E. Pfeiffer, Nasir S.A. Malik, Fred W. Wagner
Reversible Dark-Induced Senescence Of Soybean Root Nodules, N. E. Pfeiffer, Nasir S.A. Malik, Fred W. Wagner
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Nodule senescence was induced in intact soybean Glycine max. (L.) Merr., cv Woodworth plants by an 8-day dark treatment. Dark-induced senescence resulted in the complete loss of acetylene reduction activity, a 67% loss of total soluble protein, and an almost complete loss in total leghemoglobin of nodule extracts. Isoelectric focusing gels demonstrated a preferential loss of certain proteins, which was correlated with an increase in endoprotease specific activity toward azocasein. Nodules were completely green after the 8-day dark treatment. If plants were returned to a normal photoperiod after 8 days in the dark, nodules recovered from the dark treatment in …

Seed Predation And Seedling Mortality In The Recruitment Of A Shrub, Haplopappus Venetus (Asteraceae), Along A Climatic Gradient, Svata M. Louda
Svata M. Louda Publications
Haplopappus ventus is a characteristic shrub of the coastal sage scrub of southern California. Its relative frequency decreases rapidly and significantly from the coast to the central valleys of southern California. Insect damage to developing flowers and seeds is high (35-61%). Experimental exclusion of predispersal flower and seed predators caused a significant increase in the number of viable seeds released because of: (1) a decrease in insect-caused abortion of flower heads ( 11%), (2) an increase in pollination success (19%). and (3) a decrease in damage to developing seeds (104%). A significant and proportionate increase in the number of seedlings …

Gastrointestinal Helminths Of The Cougar, Felis Concolor L., In Northeastern Oregon, Robert L. Rausch, C. Maser, Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Helminths of nine species were identified from 39 cougars obtained in northeastern Oregon (Walbowa, Baker, and Union counties), viz., Taenia omissa Lühe, 1910 (100%); T. ovis krabbei Moniez, 1879 (61%); T. hydatigena Pallas, 1776 (10%); Mesocestoides lineatus (Goeze, 1782) (5%); Toxascaris leonina (von Linstow, 1902) (69%); Toxocara cati (Schrank, 1788) (15%); Physaloptera praeputialis von Linstow, 1889 (13%); Pterygodermatites affinis (Jagerskiold, 1904) (ca. 2%); and Trichinella sp. (larvae) (ca. 2%). In addition, undeveloped cestodes of the genus Taenia in 26 animals had lost rostellar hooks and could not be identified. Host-records, prevalence, and biological characteristics of some of the helminths are …

Occurrence And Pathogenicity Of Heligmosomoides Spp. (Nematoda: Heligmosomidae) Associated With Cecal Villi In Arvicolid Rodents, Robert L. Rausch, M. L. Johnson
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The host response to the nematodes Heligmosomoides hudsoni (Cameron, 1937) and H. johnsoni Rausch and Rausch, 1973 (Heligmosomidae) was investigated in their natural hosts, varying lemmings, Dicrostonyx spp., and heather voles, Phenucomys intermedius Merriam (Rodentia: Arvicolidae), respectively. The nematodes occupy the cecum of the host, where they coil tightly around the long cecal villi. In individual animaIs, the comparatively few villi occupied became much enlarged, exhibiting severe hyperplasia of the mucosa and other microscopic changes, as described. The mechanism of pathogenesis involved three factors: strangulation of the villi, pressure atrophy, and chronic irritation by the crests of the synlophe. In …
Cuticular Ridge Patterns Of Nematodirus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) Parasitic In Domestic Ruminants Of North America, With A Key To Species, J. R. Lichtenfels, P. A. Pilitt
Cuticular Ridge Patterns Of Nematodirus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) Parasitic In Domestic Ruminants Of North America, With A Key To Species, J. R. Lichtenfels, P. A. Pilitt
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The six species of Nematodirus parasitic in domestic ruminants of North America have been identified previously on the basis of characteristics of the bursa and tips of the spicules, and females could not be identified. In an effort to find additional diagnostic characteristics of both sexes, cuticular ridges were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy and in whole mounts and cross sections. After the cuticular ridges of males were characterized, females were matched with males by means of cuticular ridges, except for the rare species N. davtiani. Five of the six species have variations of an 18-ridge bilaterally …
Mammals Of The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., David M. Armstrong, Robert F. Hoffmann, Clyde Jones
Mammals Of The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., David M. Armstrong, Robert F. Hoffmann, Clyde Jones
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
For the purposes of this book, the Northern Great Plains are defined as the states of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. As a physiographic concept, the northern part of the great interior grasslands of North America is, of course, much broader in geographic extent than the Dakotas and Nebraska, but the three states lie in the heart of the region, and thus the title for this work seems appropriate. Our expectations in writing Mammals of the Northern Great Plains were to provide a comprehensive, yet semitechnical, treatmeat of free-living mammals that would prove useful to specialist and nonspecialist alike. …
Significance Of Residual Organisms In Foods After Substerilizing Doses Of Gamma Radiation: A Review, R. B. Maxcy
Significance Of Residual Organisms In Foods After Substerilizing Doses Of Gamma Radiation: A Review, R. B. Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The nature of the flora surviving substerilizing irradiation of foods is dependent on the dose applied and the conditions of applications as well as the microenvi¬ronment of the food. At a dose level low enough to preserve acceptable sensory properties of fresh food, few if any of the common contaminants of public health significance survive irradiation. Survivors are weakened and present no unique problem of acquired resistance through recycling. Those bacteria surviving a low dose treatment of a relatively contaminated product like ground beef can grow under normal storage conditions and cause obvious sensory spoilage. Thus, low dose irradiation extends …

Paralleling the technological progress found in other segments of society, the computer has revolutionized the banking industry by enabling funds to be transferred electronically. Electronic Fund Transfers (EFTs) have replaced numerous conventional uses of the check because computer transfers are a more efficient, convenient, and less costly method of transferring funds. The prevalence of EFT systems, however, raises difficult legal issues stemming from the new relationships among the participants and from the possible errors that can occur. A Seventh Circuit decision, EVRA Corporation v. Swiss Bank Corporation, highlights the legal problems involved when a party incurs a loss of …

Pretrial Hypnosis And Its Effect On Witness Competency In Criminal Trials: State V. Palmer, 210 Neb. 206, 313 N.W.2d 648 (1981), Mark A. Christensen
Nebraska Law Review
The question of whether to admit the testimony of witnesses hypnotized prior to trial in subsequent criminal proceedings has been the source of much controversy in recent years. The Nebraska Supreme Court dealt with the admissibility of hypnotically influenced testimony in State v. Palmer, which was handed down in December 1981. Although the holding of Palmer appears to provide a clear rule, it does leave several questions unanswered, as indicated by the fact that the case is again pending before the court on appeal. The reasoning of the court in reaching its decision is also somewhat lacking. The purpose …
Drugs During Pregnancy: Dangerous Business—The Continued Movement To Provide Adequate Warnings For The Consumer, David Detar Newbert
Drugs During Pregnancy: Dangerous Business—The Continued Movement To Provide Adequate Warnings For The Consumer, David Detar Newbert
Nebraska Law Review
Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration amended its general drug labeling provisions to include warnings on numerous over-the-counter drugs. These changes are directed at protecting consumers who are either pregnant or nursing their infants. As a result, manufacturers of thousands of over-the-counter drug products have until December 5, 1983, to comply with the new labeling requirements. This Comment briefly reviews the scientific information that led to the new labeling requirements and gives a historical perspective of the government's role in protecting the American consumer from dangerous drugs. It also explores the drug manufacturer's role in the entire process …

Microbiological Water Quality Of Impoundments: A Literature Review, G. Allen Burton Jr.
Microbiological Water Quality Of Impoundments: A Literature Review, G. Allen Burton Jr.
United States Public Health Resources
Assessing the microbiological water quality of impoundments and the potential for waterborne disease outbreaks is a difficult task when using traditional sampling programs. Problems associated with using fecal coliform bacteria as indicators of human pathogen presence complicates assessments of future water quality in preimpoundment areas. Reliable determination of future and present microbiological water quality requires knowledge of how the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the watershed and impoundment interrelate to influence microbial indicator and pathogen densities. Accurate estimates of microbial indicator and pathogen densities, obtainable by using the enumeration methods and their modifications suggested in this report, will allow …

Minden Notes. On 14 May 1982 I saw six or so White Pelicans over the Platte, south of Kearney, and a Swainson's Hawk, perched on a fence post, near Minden. I saw Lapland Longspurs 25 December, and then not again until 11 February, when they were present in large numbers. I usually saw Marsh Hawks when I got out this winter, and Rough-legged, and Red-tailed Hawks, and a few Kestrels. Prairie Falcons were not much seen, however. I flushed a Sprague's Pipit, northwest of minden, plus a few Savannah Sparrows. Red Crossbills were common feeders in town, earlier in the …

The Fifth Edition was published in 1957, and the last changes in it were by the 33rdSupplement, issued in 1976. The scientific and common names of the birds to be listed in the Sixth Edition, in the order to be used in that edition, are given in a 34th Supplement, published July 1982 as a supplement to The Auk, Vol. 99, No.3. But that supplement, unlike previous ones, contains no explanations or comments. Stuart Keith, Birding XIV (2):40, who in working …
1982 Fall Field Day
Nebraska Bird Review
Those who came in Friday to the 4-H Camp at Halsey National Forest ran into rain there or on the way in, but Saturday and Sunday, 2 and 3 October, were bright, but a little too windy and a little too chilly to be perfect. Sixty-three registered for the meeting. Of the birds submitted for consideration, the directors selected the Scarlet Tanager at Scotts Bluff as the best and the Cattle Egret in Sioux Co. as second. (NBR 50:65 and 67). It was decided to have a new field card, on stiffer stock and smaller sized than the present …

Louisiana Waterthrush Nesting In Fontenelle Forest, Paul Bedell
Nebraska Bird Review
On 5 June 1982, I located a nest of the Louisiana Waterthrush (Seiurus motacilla) in Fontenelle Forest. The location had been determined on 26 April when I, with three others, Tanya Bray, Babs Padelford and B.J. Rose, saw a Waterthrush carrying nesting material. This site was later reported as abandoned. I had first seen a Waterthrush in this area on 15 April and identified it as a Louisiana by its song. On 21 April I saw two foraging together. On the date of the nest building they were silent and easily overlooked; but I heard occasional singing on …
