Cranes Of The World: 3. Vocalizations, Paul A. Johnsgard
Cranes of the World by Paul A. Johnsgard
Of all avian sounds, few have the power to catch the human imagination and thrill the senses as much as does the bugling of a flock of distant cranes. Leopold (1949) referred to the progressively louder sounds of an approaching flock of sandhill cranes as “a tinkling of little bells,” the “baying of some sweet-throated hound,” and finally as “a pandemonium of trumpets, rattles, croaks, and cries.” The Greeks called it “iangling,” and most recent writers have compared the calls of typical Grus cranes to trumpets or bugles. In doing so, they have inadvertently drawn attention to the similarity of …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the design features of this unique swine nursery, including ventilation, heating and energy conservation factors, and manure handling systems.
A warm environment is essential for young pigs. High fuel costs and the practice of heating entire buildings brought about the design and testing of solar heated nurseries on several farms.
The Plow And Its Influence On The Rise Of Civilization, Tom Langdon
The Plow And Its Influence On The Rise Of Civilization, Tom Langdon
Nebraska Anthropologist
In the magical land of Toosuiter, Butane worked his small garden. He worked with his little digging stick clearing the patch of eternal rock that seemed to multiply from one season to the next. Then he'd sing the little redundant ditty: "Little poke here, little seed there, little poke here, little seed there."
He planted his seeds and delicately covered them up with the fresh fertile earth. Yams were a delicacy. They really "tasted good" with the fresh meat that Pamela, his wife, would hunt in the surrounding forest. It was a magical life, and the land and the forest …

African Influence In Mexican Folktales, Carla Mundt
Nebraska Anthropologist
Despite the fact that many African slaves were brought to the Jew World, there have been very few studies done on how their presence affected studies that have and influenced the indigenous cultures. The been done concentrate on the areas where there was an extremely large Black population like Cuba and Brazil. Very little has been done in places like Mexico or Chile and those that have been done are often inaccurate. This paper is an elementary attempt to take a close look at how the importation of African slaves affected the culture of the New World.
Hybridization & Zoogeographic Patterns In Pheasants, Paul A. Johnsgard
Hybridization & Zoogeographic Patterns In Pheasants, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
A review of interspecific pheasant hybrids as reported in the literature reveals a relatively high rate of hybridization in captivity but a low rate of hybridization in the wild. All of the 91 known hybrid combinations have been reported from captivity, and three of these combinations have also been reported from the wild. All of the latter involve species pairs of known close relationships (red and gray junglefowl, kalij and silver pheasant, and white and blue eared pheasant), suggesting that reproductive isolating mechanisms in the pheasants are much more effective under natural conditions than are those of grouse, a group …

Social Scientists And Farm Poverty On The North American Plains, 1933-1940, Harry C. Mcdean
Social Scientists And Farm Poverty On The North American Plains, 1933-1940, Harry C. Mcdean
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Chronic farm poverty in the Great Plains during the Great Depression of the 1930s provoked sharply differing responses from the governments of the United States and Canada. Among the many features of American and Canadian life that helped shape those different responses, the most significant was the status of the social sciences in agriculture. In nearly every category one might employ to assess their comparative status, from funding to publication record to political influence, social scientists in the United States enjoyed an impressive advantage over those in Canada by 1930. A historical appraisal of one element in this disparity-the research …

American Literary Images Of The Canadian Prairies, 1860-1910, James Doyle
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In 1879, the prolific dime novelist Edward L. Wheeler produced a narrative entitled Canada Chet, The Counterfeiter Chief, set in "a location as hitherto quite neglected by the pen of the novelist and veracious historian-i.e., in the British possessions to the North-west of Minnesota." If, as Wheeler suggests, American writers were indifferent to the Canadian West in the nineteenth century, this lack of attention can be related to a number of considerations, the most obvious of which is the fact that Americans were sufficiently occupied by the undeveloped regions within their own border. The westward experience in the United …

Variances Of Prediction Errors For Differences Of Estimated Genetic Values Of Cows In The Same And In Different Herds, D. C. Bolgiano, R. L. Quaas, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A modification of the evaluation method for cows in the northeast United States allowed simultaneous evaluation of cows in pairs of herds and computation of variances of prediction errors of differences of genetic potential between pairs of cows within and across herds. These variances were examined for 20 pairs of herds in Holstein, Jersey, and Brown Swiss breeds. Current evaluations of cows are nearly as accurate for comparing cows from different herds as they are for comparing cows from the same herd.

"Dried Fat" For Growing-Finishing Swine, K. E. Keaschall, B. D. Moser, E. R. Peo, Jr., A. J. Lewis, T. D. Crenshaw, Win Butler
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Three trials were conducted to determine the effect of "dried fat" (fats absorbed on carriers) in diets for growing-finishing swine. In trial I pigs receiving diets containing 5% added fat gained faster (.74 vs .71 kg/d), consumed less feed (1.87 vs 2.43 kg/d) and had a better feed efficiency (2.52 vs 2.88) than pigs fed diets without added fat (all P<.01). Pigs given the "dried fat" treatments gained faster (P<.01) and more efficiency (P<.01) than pigs fed the nonfat carrier counterpart. "Dried fats" containing whey plus fat and wheat bran plus fat produced similar performance to that observed with pigs fed a conventional tallow diet.

Profiles of LH and FSH levels and pituitary LH responses to exogenous luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) have been characterized in rams, castrated rams (wethers), and wethers implanted with testosterone. Rams were castrated when adult, and, at the time of castration, two groups of wethers were implanted with either four or eight testosterone capsules. Rams showed random pulses of LH and testosterone which were temporally related. The number of LH and testosterone pulses per 24 hours cliffeIed. among rams, giving rise to luge differences in the mean levels of these hormones. Mean FSH levels and pituitary LH responses to LHRH …

G83-638 Strawberry Pests, Timothy P. Miller, David L. Keith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the more common pests of strawberries in Nebraska, their damage, and recommended control procedures.
Several pests attack strawberries and cause varying types and degrees of injury. Damaging infestations of strawberry pests do not occur in Nebraska in most years. However, control measures are occasionally required to maintain quality, yield, and health of the strawberry bed.
