Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
The Southeast Research and Extension District Alternative Agricultural Opportunities Team met on Thursday, September 15th and reviewed the state plan for the initiative "Increasing Diversity with Alternate Crop and Livestock Enterprises".
The team members present decided that the state plan would meet the planning needs for the Southeast District if it was supplemented with a list of enterprises which have the greatest potential for additional expansion in Southeast Nebraska.
The following alternate crop and livestock enterprises were identified by the committee as having the best opportunity for additional development in the district. In crops; asparagus, melons, and onions were identified …

Comparative Notes On The Biology And Development Of Epeolus Compactus Cresson., A Cleptoparasite Of Colletes Kincaidii Cockerell (Hymenoptera: Anthophoridae, Colletidae), P. F. Torchio, D. J. Burdick
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
The biology of the nomadine bee, Epeolus compactus Cresson, is described based on composite notes taken from field, laboratory, and greenhouse studies of the host bee, Colletes kincaidii Cockerell. Details of Epeolus egg deposition are described and compared with other known noma dine bees. We document the release of a glandular secretion during egg deposition by E. compactus which dissolves the polyester host cell lining on contact. Late embryogenesis and hatching of Epeolus are described and adaptive features are discussed. The cleptoparasitic habits of the first instar are outlined, and anatomical differences expressed by various ins tars are compared. Methods …

13.4.1. Considerations Of Community Characteristics For Sampling Vegetation, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid
13.4.1. Considerations Of Community Characteristics For Sampling Vegetation, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Wetland managers often monitor marsh vegetation to determine if management goals have been met and expenditures justified. Vegetation can be monitored using indices that identify plant composition, trends in vegetative changes, or rough estimates of food production. Development of vegetation sampling protocol requires careful assessment of management goals in relation to benefits received from sampling efforts. Assessing the results of manipulations has direct management implications, whereas detailed studies that emphasize plant life histories or basic ecological investigations have less direct value. Information on plant community characteristics that will enable managers to match sampling techniques with refuge needs and the constraints …

13.4.10. Control Of Willow And Cottonwood Seedlings In Herbaceous Wetlands, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Willow and cottonwood are common species in forested wetlands and occur throughout most riparian and floodplain habitats of North America. These woody species are especially common in early successional stands where seasonal flooding occurs regularly. Cottonwood and willow are often considered problem plants, because they rapidly invade wetlands dominated by herbaceous flora and can form dense, extensive stands. The shade created by these species eliminates herbaceous undergrowth, and once the sapling stage is reached, cottonwoods and willows are difficult to eradicate. Control of these species can be costly and varies considerably with latitude.
Wringing It Dry: The Challenge Of Prehistoric Textiles, Elizabeth Barber
Wringing It Dry: The Challenge Of Prehistoric Textiles, Elizabeth Barber
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Some time ago I embarked on a "short little project" to find out what I could about Bronze Age Aegean textiles, which I had come to suspect were more elaborate and more important than anyone was giving them credit for. I knew the project could not take very long, and would not take more than maybe ten pages to write up, because virtually nothing in the way of textiles has survived from Greece—even in the Classical period, let alone the prehistoric era. But my father, who was a physicist, had instilled into me a question that changed everything: namely, "(If …

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This published proceeding is a milestone in the development of the Textile Society of America, a professional organization for people involved with the study and care of textiles. Without the strong and consistent guiding hand of its founding president, Peggy Gilfoy, the first steps of this fledgling organization would have been so painless, nor its accomplishments so impressive.
Peg's untimely death in November, 1988, has come as a shock to us all. For the Textile Society of America there can be no more fitting memorial to this generous colleague and scholar than the dedication of this volume to Peggy Stolz …
Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin
Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
We all associate meaning with textile designs. If we can see the principles of Revolutionary zeal and the sanction of family life and work in one textile design, we can perceive the explicit Modernism of another and realize that in the complex decisions that comprise the creation of a textile, we have fashioned our world and its values. Perhaps the textile is small, but its condensed values and meaning may be a more clarified perception about the world than most others. For many, such as Roland Barthes, textiles and clothing can thereby be described as a sign system offering a …

Cloning And Sequencing Of The Genes For Shiga Toxin From Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1, Nancy A. Strockbine, Matthew Jackson, Lawrence Sung, Randall Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien
United States Public Health Resources
The structural genes for Shiga toxin, designated stx A and stx B, were cloned from Shigella dysenteriae type 1 3818T, and a nucleotide sequence analysis was performed. Both stx A and stx B were present on a single transcriptional unit, with stx A preceding stx B. The molecular weight calculated for the processed A subunit was 32,225, while the molecular weight of the processed B subunit was 7,691. Comparison of the nucleotide sequences for Shiga toxin and Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) from Escherichia coli revealed that the genes for Shiga toxin and SLT-I were greater than 99% homologous; three nucleotide …
Goddess Imagery In Greek Folk Costume, Linda Welters, Linda Tepfenhart
Goddess Imagery In Greek Folk Costume, Linda Welters, Linda Tepfenhart
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The seeds of this research were sown in a textile exhibition entitled "Goddesses and Their Offspring: 19th and 20th Century Eastern European Embroideries" at the Roberson Center for the Arts in Binghamton, N.Y. in 1986. Similarities between the imagery of Eastern European textiles and the embroideries in Greek folk costume prompted this study. It was part of a larger field research project on Boeotian folk costumes sponsored by Earthwatch in the summer of 1988
A "hot topic" of discussion among feminists of all disciplines is the image of the prehistoric goddess and the ensuing implications for all women everywhere. I …

The Spatial Memory Of Clark’S Nutcrackers (Nucifraga Columbiana) In An Analogue Of The Radial Arm Maze, Russel P. Balda, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) use spatial memory to recover stored food in the field. In the present experiments, an open-field analogue of the radial arm maze was developed and used to test the ability of nutcrackers to remember spatial locations. The nutcrackers showed high levels of retention after 6 h, but were close to chance levels after a 24-h retention interval. These results suggest that nutcrackers may use different spatial memory systems under different conditions. After long retention intervals, nutcrackers performed more accurately than pigeons tested by other experimenters using similar procedures. This raises the possibility of species …
Diet Choices Of Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata) As A Function Of Time Spent Foraging, Sonja I. Yoerg, Alan C. Kamil
Diet Choices Of Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata) As A Function Of Time Spent Foraging, Sonja I. Yoerg, Alan C. Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Optimal diet theory predicts choices among prey types. With sequential prey encounters, less profitable prey types may be rejected immediately because rejecting the prey item at hand increases the probability of encountering more profitable types. However, Lucas (1985) argued that at the end of a foraging bout, all encountered prey types should be accepted because the opportunity to encounter more profitable types is limited. We tested Lucas’s prediction in a simulation, allowing blue jays to hunt for two moth types differing in profitability. During the last min of both 10- and 20-min foraging bouts, the less profitable type was attacked …
Cupular Structure In Paleotropical Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul
Cupular Structure In Paleotropical Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The structure and some developmental aspects of the cupules of 22 species of paleotropical Castanopsis are discussed and illustrated. Some species have cupules massively invested with strong, sharp spines, but others are less spiny, and some are nearly smooth. Most cupular armament results from spines produced axillary to the valvular scales and basally adnate to them. Columns of scales straddling the sutures between the cupular valves do not become spines, but the numerous scales elsewhere on the valves become somewhat spiny with age. Dehiscence in the spiny-valved species is mostly along the sutures. The smooth cupules of some species have …

Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Can we guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms in the environment? To anticipate my remarks, the answer to the title question is “No, we cannot guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms released into the environment.” Indeed, it is a tenet of the scientific method that nothing can be proved, only disproved. Thus, we can never show that a release will be safe. We could only show that it would be unsafe, if that were the case. However, if the question is posed differently, for example, can we safely release genetically engineered organisms into the environment?, the answer is …

Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool
Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Early anthropological studies addressed the economic position of women as one component of women's "status"-a construct used to examine a variety of gender-based social distinctions. These distinctions were conceptualized as the opposing domains of "domestic" and "public." The association of women with the domestic domain was viewed as the critical factor in understanding asymmetrical relations of power and authority. Since status has generally been defined in terms of participation in the public, economic, and political sectors dominated by men, anthropologists have proposed alternatives to the strict association of power with public roles. They used the term "influence" to mean the …
