G89-907 Drinking Water: Testing For Quality (Revised April 2005), Sharon Skipton, Bruce I. Dvorak, Wayne Woldt
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Why test water quality? Concern about water quality often leads consumers to ask questions such as "What is in my water?" or "Is my drinking water safe?" All water from natural sources contains dissolved substances. These substances are often called contaminants, especially when the amounts present are at possibly harmful or problematic levels. The substances in water can result from either natural processes or human activities. At low concentrations, many do not cause known harmful effects and may be beneficial. Research shows some substances may be harmful only when present at high enough concentrations. The only way to know if …

Ec89-1761 Poisonous Snakes And Snakebite In Nebraska, Ron J. Johnson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Nebraska has four kinds of venomous snakes — the prairie rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, western massasauga (a small rattlesnake), and copperhead. Knowing how to identify venomous snakes, especially the kinds found in areas where you might go, is a good first step in avoiding them.
This publication provides information about Nebraska's venomous snakes, some guidelines for avoiding snakebite, and suggestions on what to do in case of snakebite.

13.2.5. Avian Cholera: A Major New Cause Of Waterfowl Mortality, Milton Friend
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Avian cholera is a highly infectious disease caused by the bacterium, Pasteurella multocida. Acute infections are common and can result in death 6 to 12 hours after exposure. Under these circumstances “explosive” die-offs involving more than 1,000 birds per day have occurred in wild waterfowl. More chronic infections with longer incubation times and less dramatic losses also occur. Transmission can occur by bird-to-bird contact, ingestion of contaminated food or water, and perhaps in aerosol form.

13.2.6. Lead Poisoning: The Invisible Disease, Milton Friend
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Lead poisoning is an intoxication resulting from absorption of hazardous levels of lead into body tissues. Lead pellets from shot shells, when ingested, are the most common source of lead poisoning in migratory birds. Other far less common sources include lead fishing sinkers, mine wastes, paint pigments, bullets, and other lead objects that are swallowed.

North American Cuterebrid Myiasis Report Of Seventeen New Infections Of Human Beings And Review Of The Disease, J. Kevin Baird, Craig R. Baird, Curtis W. Sabrosky
United States Public Health Resources
Human infection with botfly larvae (Cuterebra species) are reported, and 54 cases are reviewed. Biologic, epidemiologic, clinical, histopathologic, and diagnostic features of North American cuterebrid myiasis are described. A cuterebrid maggot generally causes a single furuncular nodule. Most cases occur in children in the northeastern United States or the Pacific Northwest; however, exceptions are common. Most lesions of North American cuterebrid myiasis are caused by second or third instar Cuterebra maggots that appear in late August, September, and October. First instar maggots are unusual and occur in the vitreous humor or in the upper respiratory tract of patients in …

Toxin Genotypes And Plasmid Profiles As Determinants Of Systemic Sequelae In Escherichia Coli 0157:H7 Infections, Stephen Ostroff, Phillip Tarr, Marguerite A. Neill, Jay H. Lewi, Nancy Hargrett-Bean, John M. Kobayashi
United States Public Health Resources
In 1987, 93 Escherichia coli 0157:H7 isolates were collected during routine surveillance for this pathogen in the state of Washington. Toxin genotypes and plasmid profiles were correlated with the clinical sequelae of illness in 88 of the 93 patients from whom these strains were isolated. Thirteen plasmid patterns were observed among the 88 tested isolates; four patterns accounted for 82(7o of the isolates. Genetic probing for Shiga-like toxins (SLT) I and II demonstrated the presence of both genes in 67 (76%), SLT I alone in three (3%), and SLT II alone in 18 (20%). The hemolytic uremic syndrome or throm-botic …
13.4.12. Control Of Phragmites Or Common Reed, Diana H. Cross, Karen L. Fleming
13.4.12. Control Of Phragmites Or Common Reed, Diana H. Cross, Karen L. Fleming
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Phragmites, or common reed, is a perennial grass often associated with wetlands. When phragmites is interspersed with open water or with other vegetation, waterbirds and small mammals find cover among the stems. Its dense root systems strengthen dikes and roads. On many sites, however, this robust emergent forms monotypic, impenetrable stands having little value for waterfowl. Ducks occasionally nest on the edges of large stands, but avoid the dense interior.
Phragmites is native to North America and is found worldwide, primarily in lowland temperate regions. Phragmites can occupy upland sites with seeps, or grow in brackish or fresh water several …
Toward A Resolution Of The Paradox Of Aggressive Displays: I. Optimal Deceit In The Communication Of Fighting Ability, Alan B. Bond
Toward A Resolution Of The Paradox Of Aggressive Displays: I. Optimal Deceit In The Communication Of Fighting Ability, Alan B. Bond
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
One inference from game theory models of animal conflict is that adversaries should not inform one another about concealed components of their fighting ability. This poses a paradox for the customary ethological account of aggressive displays in that it is usually assumed that the primary function of such behavior is to make such information available. To resolve the paradox, I propose that the information in aggressive displays may not be strictly truthful, but may instead represent "optimal deceit," a balance between the advantages of deceit or bluffing and the disadvantages of selecting for skepticism in the receiver. Numerical simulation of …

Dispersion Of Displaying Male Sage Grouse Ii. The Role Of Female Dispersion, J. W. Bradbury, Robert M. Gibson, C. E. Mccarthy, S. L. Vehrencamp
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The degree to which male sage grouse select lek sites and females select nesting sites to maximize proximity to the other sex was examined by contrasting male dispersions with the dispersions and movements of females in the months preceeding incubation. Wintering females exhibit highly overlapping ranges due to shared use of central refuging areas. In late winter and early spring, females move an average 9 km from wintering areas to select nest sites and males begin occupying leks. Pooled evidence suggests that females select nest sites independently of male dispersion whereas males adjust lek occupation so as to maximize proximity …

Scaptomyza Nigrita Wheeler (Diptera: Drosophilidae), A Leaf Miner Of The Native Crucifer, Cardamine Cordifolia A. Gray (Bittercress), S. K. Collinge, Svata M. Louda
Svata M. Louda Publications
The biology of Scaptomyza nigrita on its host plant, a native crucifer (Bittercress) in the Rocky Mountains, is described. Development of each stage in the life history was studied both in the field and in the laboratory. This is the first documentation of a host for S. nigrita. We examined the activity of adult flies in two adjacent habitats, sun and adjacent willow shade. Adult flies were more abundant on bittercress plants in sun-exposed versus in shaded areas, and were most active from mid-day to late afternoon. Female flies were significantly larger than male flies, but there were no differences …

Enhancing The Adoption Of Soil Conservation Practices With Targeted Educational Programs, David P. Shelton, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, David A. Biere
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Two independent, but closely related, grant funded educational programs have been developed and implemented to reduce soil erosion in selected areas of eastern Nebraska, U.S.A. Traditional extension programming methods as well as other more nontraditional approaches have been extensively used. In one program, encompassing 220,000 ha of cropland, annual soil erosion has been reduced by 2.5 Mt and annual fuel savings of 1.5 ML have been achieved through a reduction in the number of tillage operations. During a one-year period in the second project, more than 81,000 m of terraces were constructed, which resulted in an annual soil erosion reduction …

Omaha Language Preservation In The Macy, Nebraska Public School, Catherine Rudin
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
A native language renewal program at the Macy, Nebraska Public School is described that is designed to preserve Omaha, a native American Indian language that is only a generation away from extinction. At the time of this research, only about 100 fluent Omaha speakers lived on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska. The language and culture program, instituted in 1970, has employed various instruction techniques and methodologies, including immersion, memorization of words and phrases, and publication of student-authored stories in English and Omaha. The program has suffered from a lack of consistency; frequent changes in funding, personnel, and curriculum; and a …
