Steve Jobs And Disclaimed Paternity, Stewart Justman Jul 2025

Steve Jobs And Disclaimed Paternity, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

Steve Jobs, the revered techno-visionary and co-founder of Apple, once said that at the age of 22, “I knew I wasn’t ready to run a real company. But Apple was my baby, and I didn’t want to give it up.” The actual baby born when he was 23 was another matter.

Angle Of Repose: Mine And Thine, Stewart Justman Jul 2025

Angle Of Repose: Mine And Thine, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

In the composition of Angle of Repose (1971) Wallace Stegner drew heavily from the unpublished writings of Mary Hallock Foote (1847-1938)—a practice that shapes the novel in more ways than one. Stegner seems to have felt that the wholesale use of another’s writings is legitimate provided that appropriated text is worked into something original. Hence the strenuous originality of this tale of a Quaker woman whose incongruous marriage, following a loveless engagement, leads to an illicit dalliance which in turn leads directly to the death of her child. Relating a series of events that exists nowhere but in the pages …

Arbitrating With Indian Tribes: Separability, Tribal Sovereign Immunity, And Exhaustion Of Tribal Remedies, Paul F. Kirgis Jul 2025

Arbitrating With Indian Tribes: Separability, Tribal Sovereign Immunity, And Exhaustion Of Tribal Remedies, Paul F. Kirgis

Faculty Law Review Articles

Indian tribes have emerged as significant contributors to the national and regional economies, notably through industries such as gaming, natural resource extraction, technology, and consumer lending. This increasing commercial activity brings with it increasing commercial disputes. Both Indian tribes and their nonmember counterparts need a fair and reliable forum to ensure that agreements are performed, loans repaid, and avoidable harms compensated. But the complex legal landscape of tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction complicates dispute resolution involving tribes. Tribes’ status as sovereign entities raises challenging issues of federal and state court jurisdiction, tribal sovereign immunity, and exhaustion of tribal remedies. Arbitration offers …

Treaty Justice: Charles Wilkinson's Homage To The Boldt Decision, Michael C. Blumm Jun 2025

Treaty Justice: Charles Wilkinson's Homage To The Boldt Decision, Michael C. Blumm

Public Land & Resources Law Review

Charles Wilkinson, a beloved teacher, author, and advisor, gave his readers perhaps his most personal gift in Treaty Justice: The Northwest Tribes, the Boldt Decision, and the Recognition of Fishing Rights (U. Washington Press, 2024). Wilkinson finished the manuscript just a week before his unexpected death, at age 81, in 2023. The book is a blend of personal memoirs of countless encounters of people involved in the seminal Boldt decision–which revolutionized treaty fishing rights– and its aftermath, and part of legal history by an analyst who was acutely sensitive to the vagaries of both law and history. We are fortunate …

Powering Progress: How Ferc Order 2023'S Cluster Study Process Aims To Revolutionize Grid Interconnection, Lowell J. Chandler Jun 2025

Powering Progress: How Ferc Order 2023'S Cluster Study Process Aims To Revolutionize Grid Interconnection, Lowell J. Chandler

Public Land & Resources Law Review

This Article analyzes Order 2023’s cornerstone reform: the replacement of the traditional first-come, first-served serial queue process with a more sophisticated first-ready, first-served cluster study approach. The Article also provides a basic introduction to utility regulation in the United States. While Order 2023’s change promises to revolutionize grid interconnection, the Article also considers whether additional reforms may be necessary to fully realize FERC’s vision of an efficient, equitable interconnection process.

Montana Trout Unlimited V. Montana Department Of Natural Resources, Kelly Brady Jun 2025

Montana Trout Unlimited V. Montana Department Of Natural Resources, Kelly Brady

Public Land & Resources Law Review

A proposed copper mine located near tributaries of the highly protected Smith River in central Montana set off a series of lawsuits over the use of water in the state. After a number of administrative hearings and subsequent trials, the only substantial question left was the status of “mine dewatering.” The Montana Supreme Court decided whether 1,500,000 gallons of water removed annually from the inner workings of a mine should require a water use permit as a beneficial use or if it exists outside of the regulatory jurisdiction of the Montana Department of Natural Resources under the Montana Water Use …

Becoming A More Effective Instructor Using Primary Source Projects, Tricia Muldoon Brown Jun 2025

Becoming A More Effective Instructor Using Primary Source Projects, Tricia Muldoon Brown

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) is a pedagogical practice with much supporting research for its effectiveness with all students, but especially among traditionally underrepresented student groups in mathematics. However, IBL classrooms are not easy to implement; in particular, instructors need to know how to write appropriate materials, lead effective class discussions, and deal with student expectations. Primary Source Projects (PSPs) helped me address my deficiencies in these areas and become a more effective instructor. In this narrative, I relate my experiences using PSPs to transform my lecture classroom into a fully student-centered class, starting modestly by utilizing IBL with only one PSP …

Situating The Statistical Legacies Of Galton And Fisher: Multi-Layered Discussions In The Mathematics Classroom, Deborah Kent, Jemma Lorenat Jun 2025

Situating The Statistical Legacies Of Galton And Fisher: Multi-Layered Discussions In The Mathematics Classroom, Deborah Kent, Jemma Lorenat

The Mathematics Enthusiast

When ethics requirements are confined to courses taught by non-STEM faculty, students may erroneously conclude that such considerations are at most marginal to their professional training. Primary source readings and discussion frameworks can tangibly link data analysis to questions of values within data science, computing ethics, or statistics courses. The particular cases of Sir Francis Galton and Sir Ronald Fisher—both statisticians and eugenicists—provide a rich collection of easily accessible digitized primary source material as well as a vast number of related popular and technical publications. Galton and Fisher figured centrally in the development of statistics as it is currently practiced …

A Study Of Current Capabilities Of Commercial Platforms Using Music Ai, Johan Eriksson May 2025

A Study Of Current Capabilities Of Commercial Platforms Using Music Ai, Johan Eriksson

University Grant Program Reports

2024-25 capabilities AI in music does not equal the quality of high-level human practitioners of composition, performance, pedagogy, and sound engineering (though certain tasks are commonly transferred to AI). The reasons include the complexity of the music (composition), and the logistics of the profession (performance, pedagogy). However, there are already professions being displaced by AI in the music industry, primarily in sound engineering, or in composition projects for simpler tasks such as repetitive gaming music. It is likely that AI will over time, and with augmented capabilities, increasingly insert itself into almost every part of the chain in commercial music …
