Biomass burning is a large source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and many other trace species to the atmosphere, which can act as precursors to secondary pollutants such as ozone and fine particles. Measurements performed with a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer during the FIREX 2016 laboratory intensive were analyzed with positive matrix factorization (PMF), in order to understand the instantaneous variability in VOC emissions from biomass burning, and to simplify the description of these types of emissions. Despite the complexity and variability of emissions, we found that a solution including just two emission profiles, which are mass spectral representations of …

Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez Jul 2018

Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present research corroborates K. Sullivan's initial results as stated in her epoch making study about the effectiveness of teaching elementary calculus using Robinson's non standard approach. Our research added to her results related to the teaching of the elementary integral, with similar positive results. In this essay we propose a definition of the notion of cognitive advantage mentioned by Sullivan in expressing the dramatic differences in understanding of students of non standard calculus as opposed to those of its standard counterpart. Our proposal is based on ideas of Kitcher and Kuhn and allows us to better understand the didactics …

Generating K-Pell Infinite Series Using Whittaker’S Formula, Raul Prisacariu Jul 2018

Generating K-Pell Infinite Series Using Whittaker’S Formula, Raul Prisacariu

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, we apply Whittaker’s formula on 2nd degree polynomial equations of the form: x2 + 2x – (k−1), where k≥2 and k∈𝑁. By applying Whittaker’s formula on these polynomial equations, we obtain infinite series for √𝑘 that involve integers belonging to specific k-Pell sequences. More specifically, the infinite series of √𝑘 will be made of terms containing the successive integers belonging to the k-Pell sequence {𝑃𝑘−1,𝑛}𝑛.

This paper proposes a processing chain for the derivation of global Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR), Fraction Vegetation Cover (FVC), and Canopy water content (CWC) maps from 15-years of MODIS data exploiting the capabilities of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. The retrieval chain is based on a hybrid method inverting the PROSAIL radiative transfer model (RTM) with Random forests (RF) regression. A major feature of this work is the implementation of a retrieval chain exploiting the GEE capabilities using global and climate data records (CDR) of both MODIS surface reflectance and LAI/FAPAR …

Learning To Write Calculus Solutions: An Experiment In Latex, Brent Pohlmann Jul 2018

Learning To Write Calculus Solutions: An Experiment In Latex, Brent Pohlmann

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We explore the use of LATEX to typeset solutions to calculus problems. We hypothesize that solving one problem completely, and presenting that solution properly, helps to strengthen students' overall problem solving and mathematical abilities. Several specific examples are given to demonstrate how these changes occurred within in an individual Calculus III course.

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup Jul 2018

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this article, we explore affordances of adopting the framework of praxeology by Chevallard in the analysis of mathematics classroom communication in relation to the communication in a textbook. While adopting praxeology, we carried out detailed analysis of communication in both classroom data and textbooks. The construed praxeologies describe the organisation of knowledge expressed for the same type of task in both classroom and textbook. The praxeologies were compared, with specific attention to the teacher’s practice. This analysis illuminates how teachers’ practices, realised in classroom communication, may be compared to other texts describing the same topics, with a focus on …

Drawing Off The Page: How New 3d Technologies Provide Insight Into Cognitive And Pedagogical Assumptions About Mathematics, Oi-Lam Ng, Nathalie Sinclair, Brent Davis

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Mathematics has a history of being a two-dimensional inscribing practice. We describe the potential evolution in doing, thinking, and learning mathematics with the emergence of a technological innovation that enables real-time 3D virtual and material interactions. Using the 3D drawing pen as a simple and recently available technology, we highlight how it helps re-think long-standing assumptions and dichotomies in mathematics education including, for example, the material distinction between diagram and manipulative, the semiotic distinction between icon and index, and the developmental progression of action-icon-symbol. We then speculate on the future possibilities of the shift in technological infrastructure that 3D pens …

Where There's A Will, There's A Way: Young People And Climate Change, Emma H. Kiefer Apr 2018

Where There's A Will, There's A Way: Young People And Climate Change, Emma H. Kiefer

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Climate change is the defining issue of our time. It will disproportionately impact young people, less developed and impoverished nations, global agricultural systems, and vulnerable ecosystems across the globe. Current and future generations of students must be educated and empowered to tackle the problem. My research looks at the experience of students learning about climate change in an introductory climate change class, CCS 103X, at the University of Montana. I evaluate data from survey questionnaires taken at the beginning and the end of the class, and comments made during and after each class, to evaluate the relationship between the attitudes …

Integrated Design And The Backyard Astronomer, Benjamin R. Seratt Apr 2018

Integrated Design And The Backyard Astronomer, Benjamin R. Seratt

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Astrophotography is the photographing of celestial objects and phenomena commonly used by amerature and professional astronomers. Due to Earth’s rotation, the stars and constellations appear to move overhead and therefore become blurred in long exposure photographs. To counteract these ‘star trails’ a barn door tracker can be used to move the camera synchronously with the sky overhead. These trackers can be as simple as two pieces of wood with a hinge or as complex as an expensive commercial product. The purpose of this project is to manufacture a barn door tracker inspired by existing methods. Each prototype progressed toward efficiency, …

A Bacteriophage Integrase Regulates Virulence Factor Production In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Autumn J. Robinson Apr 2018

A Bacteriophage Integrase Regulates Virulence Factor Production In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Autumn J. Robinson

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

A bacteriophage integrase regulates virulence factor production

in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterial pathogen that causes hospital-acquired infections and is very difficult to kill with antibiotics. This is especially true when P. aeruginosa grows as a biofilm—a complex community of bacteria encased in a protective extracellular matrix. P. aeruginosa biofilms produce large amounts of filamentous Pf bacteriophage, which are viruses that infect P. aeruginosa. Pf bacteriophage are known to increase the virulence of P. aeruginosa. However, the underlying mechanisms that cause this are unknown. Our preliminary results suggest that when the Pf bacteriophage integrase gene intP is overexpressed, …

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?, Martha Krebill, Melanie Gagen, Melisande Slater, Anna Peterson, Nikia Reynolds

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Our group seeks to explore the nature of career development in children and demonstrate the importance of career exploration from a young age, especially in a globalized society. Around the world, studies have shown that children’s career aspirations are influenced by a wide range of factors, including gender stereotypes, socioeconomic status, parents’ and role models’ professions, and community. Through art and storytelling, our group will create a children’s book aimed at children in 4th to 6th grade, the age group in which career exploration tends to become most salient. The book will present many careers and paths to attaining these …

Mapping Mount Saint Helens: Capturing The Volcano's Geomorphologic Change Over Time, Jennifer Haas Apr 2018

Mapping Mount Saint Helens: Capturing The Volcano's Geomorphologic Change Over Time, Jennifer Haas

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

On the morning of May 18, 1980, in the state of Washington, Mount Saint Helens violently erupted, causing the reshaping of the volcano and the largest historical landslide on Earth. This volcanic episode caused significant modifications to the surrounding landscape, including the loss of 70% of the volcano’s glacier mass and 1,314 feet of elevation. Capturing this dynamic environment cartographically has been a challenge. This paper reports on a study aimed at investigating a particular type of cartography called geomorphological mapping, which represents landscapes and their processes of change over time. The study also applies this type of mapping to …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa Apr 2018

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (an artifact; a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. The problem is that the object of ideological desire is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Historical Archaeologist Mark P. Leone attempted to locate such an object several times while conducting archaeological investigations into historical Mormonism, Mormon historical ecology, and technologies employed by Mormons in the arid American West. It is posited here that the object of Mormon ideological desire in the archaeological record within …

Hawai'i Wildlife Fund V. County Of Maui, Lowell J. Chandler Apr 2018

Hawai'i Wildlife Fund V. County Of Maui, Lowell J. Chandler

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In Hawai’i Wildlife Fund v. County of Maui, the Ninth Circuit held that the plain language of the Clean Water Act provides jurisdiction over indirect discharges of pollutants from a point source into groundwater that is shown to be connected to navigable waters. The court found that studies confirmed pollutants entering the Pacific Ocean were fairly traceable to the County of Maui’s sewage disposal wells. In affirming the district court’s ruling, the Ninth Circuit held that Maui County violated the Clean Water Act by discharging pollutants into a navigable water without the required permit. The court also concluded the …

Double And Nothing: Open Government In Montana Under Article Ii, Section 9 And Section 10, Peter Michael Meloy Apr 2018

Double And Nothing: Open Government In Montana Under Article Ii, Section 9 And Section 10, Peter Michael Meloy

Montana Law Review

This article will present the author’s view that it is unnecessary to reconcile Sections 9 and 10 of Article II because the Convention delegates harmonized the two opposing rights within the text of Section 9: “No person shall be deprived of the right to examine documents or to observe the actions and deliberations of all public officials or agencies of state government and its subdivisions, except in cases in which the demand of individual privacy exceeds the merits of public disclosure.” While the Montana Supreme Court has developed its jurisprudence governing open meetings and records by construing Section 9 …
