Professional Development For Mathematics Teacher Education Faculty: Need And Design, Billy Jackson, Shandy Hauk, Jenq Jong Tsay, Alma Ramirez

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The purpose of this report is to share a conceptual model useful in the design of professional learning about teaching for university mathematics faculty. The model is illustrated by examples from a particular design effort: the development of an online shortcourse for faculty new to teaching mathematics courses for prospective primary school teachers. How novice mathematics teacher educators grow as instructors is an emerging area of research and development in the United States. At the same time, it is well established that effective instructional design of any course, including a course for faculty, requires breadth first: understanding and anticipating the …

Experiencing Active Mathematics Learning: Meeting The Expectations For Teaching And Learning In Mathematics Classrooms, Kristy Litster, Beth Macdonald, Jessica F. Shumway

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Active learning mathematics classrooms incorporate meaningful activities that emphasize reasoning, thinking and active interaction with mathematics. Current mathematics standards and curricula recommend that Mathematics Teacher Educators (MTEs) use elements of active learning in their mathematics content courses specifically designed for Prospective Teachers (PTs) as they prepare PTs to learn and teach mathematics. However, it can be very difficult for PTs to shift their pedagogical dispositions towards instruction associated with active learning because they typically have not experienced mathematics taught in this way. This article focuses on two instructional practices for MTEs to use with PTs. First, selecting tasks that promote …

Human Vascular Endothelial Cells Express Epithelial Growth Factor In Response To Infection By Bartonella Bacilliformis, Linda D. Hicks, Michael F. Minnick Apr 2020

Human Vascular Endothelial Cells Express Epithelial Growth Factor In Response To Infection By Bartonella Bacilliformis, Linda D. Hicks, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella are Gram-negative bacterial pathogens that trigger pathological angiogenesis during infection of humans. Bartonella bacilliformis (Bb) is a neglected tropical agent endemic to South America, where it causes Carrión's disease. Little is known about Bb's virulence determinants or how the pathogen elicits hyperproliferation of the vasculature, culminating in Peruvian warts (verruga peruana) of the skin. In this study, we determined that active infection of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by live Bb induced host cell secretion of epidermal growth factor (EGF) using ELISA. Killed bacteria or lysates of various Bb strains did not cause EGF production, suggesting that an …

The Kathmandu Valley in Nepal is a bowl-shaped urban basin that experiences severe air pollution that poses health risks to its 3.5 million inhabitants. As part of the Nepal Ambient Monitoring and Source Testing Experiment (NAMaSTE), ambient air quality in the Kathmandu Valley was investigated from 11 to 24 April 2015, during the premonsoon season. Ambient concentrations of fine and coarse particulate matter (PM2:5 and PM10, respectively), online PM1, inorganic trace gases (NH3, HNO3, SO2, and HCl), and carbon-containing gases (CO2, CO, CH4, and 93 nonmethane volatile organic compounds; NMVOCs) were quantified at a semi-urban location near the center of …

Fish On Fluoxetine: Before, During, And After, Susan Greene

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Wastewater pollution contaminating surface waters has become a concern all over the world, even in places humans don’t permanently live. These contaminants come from a variety of chemicals, such as anti-depressants, and the effects vary between species. Unfortunately, methods for extraction of these chemicals from wastewater are not economical and cheaper alternatives are still being developed. This has led to an increase in chemicals in surface water, with antidepressants increasing 400 percent in recent decades. This increase in chemicals in surface water could have impacts on the creatures inhabiting the polluted water. Few studies have been conducted on what impact …

What Is Marketing? How Has It Been Applied To Conservation?, Hannah Leonard

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

This study explores how marketing, holistically defined, has been applied in conservation and what opportunities remain. In completing a systematic review process, we can see the landscape of marketing theories and techniques currently in practice in conservation. The purpose of this systematic review is to outline the gaps and opportunities conservationists have to use marketing tools and techniques to more effectively and efficiently accomplish their goals.

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Ric-8A is a cytosolic Guanine Nucleotide exchange Factor (GEF) that activates heterotrimeric G protein alpha subunits (Gα) and serves as an essential Gα chaperone. Mechanisms by which Ric-8A catalyzes these activities, which are stimulated by Casein Kinase II phosphorylation, are unknown. We report the structure of the nanobody-stabilized complex of nucleotide-free Gα bound to phosphorylated Ric-8A at near atomic resolution by cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography. The mechanism of Ric-8A GEF activity differs considerably from that employed by G protein-coupled receptors at the plasma membrane. Ric-8A engages a specific conformation of Gα at multiple interfaces to form a complex that …

Encapsulation Enhances Protoplast Fusant Stability, Jordan Gulli, Eugene Kroll, Frank Rosenzweig Feb 2020

Encapsulation Enhances Protoplast Fusant Stability, Jordan Gulli, Eugene Kroll, Frank Rosenzweig

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A barrier to cost-efficient biomanufacturing is the instability of engineered genetic elements, such as plasmids. Instability can also manifest at the whole-genome level, when fungal dikaryons revert to parental species due to nuclear segregation during cell division. Here, we show that by encapsulating Saccharomyces cerevisiae-Pichia stipitis dikaryons in an alginate matrix, we can limit cell division and preserve their expanded metabolic capabilities. As a proxy to cellulosic ethanol production, we tested the capacity of such cells to carry out ethanologenic fermentation of glucose and xylose, examining substrate use, ploidy, and cell viability in relation to planktonic fusants, as well as …

Canadian Travelers - Why They Visit Montana, Carter Bermingham, Glenna Hartman, Norma P. Nickerson

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

In the past five years, the number of Canadian visitors to Montana and their expenditure totals have decreased. This report highlights the characteristics of Canadian travelers to Montana, along with accompanying analysis of recent literature and statistics that attempt to provide some explanation for these observed trends. Results confirm that that the exchange rate is the largest contributing factor to decreases in Canadian visitors to the state.
