Prion Protein Lowering Is A Disease-Modifying Therapy Across Prion Disease Stages, Strains And Endpoints, Eric Vallabh Minikel, Hien T. Zhao, Jason Le, Jill O'Moore, Rose Pitstick, Samantha Graffam, George A. Carlson, Michael P. Kavanaugh

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Lowering of prion protein (PrP) expression in the brain is a genetically validated therapeutic hypothesis in prion disease. We recently showed that antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)-mediated PrP suppression extends survival and delays disease onset in intracerebrally prion-infected mice in both prophylactic and delayed dosing paradigms. Here, we examine the efficacy of this therapeutic approach across diverse paradigms, varying the dose and dosing regimen, prion strain, treatment timepoint, and examining symptomatic, survival, and biomarker readouts. We recapitulate our previous findings with additional PrP-targeting ASOs, and demonstrate therapeutic benefit against four additional prion strains. We demonstrate that

America At A Glance: Social Isolation And Loneliness During The First Wave Of Covid-19, University Of Montana Rural Institute Aug 2020

America At A Glance: Social Isolation And Loneliness During The First Wave Of Covid-19, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

Social isolation and loneliness are a public health concern because they are associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes and mortality. To learn more about how COVID-19 and related responses (i.e. stay-at-home orders) may contribute to feelings of social isolation and loneliness among people with disabilities, we compared data from two cross-sectional samples collected before and after the first wave of “stay-at-home” orders. Post-COVID rural and urban samples reported significantly more interactions with family and close friends. Post-COVID urban respondents reported significantly lower rates of feeling left out, while the post-COVID rural respondents reported similar rates.

Managing Cultural Resources On The Alaska Peninsula, Laura Stelson, William L. Rice, B. Derrick Taff Aug 2020

Managing Cultural Resources On The Alaska Peninsula, Laura Stelson, William L. Rice, B. Derrick Taff

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Twentieth-century cultural resources provide physical evidence of human relationships with a landscape that has shaped the wilderness areas we know today. These cultural resources enrich the meaning of an area as wilderness, but also present multiple management challenges surrounding visitor use in designated wilderness areas. The National Geographic Society Katmai Expeditions of the 1910s present a case study of how historic trails and their associated artifacts interact not only with present issues toward the dual-enforcement of the National Historic Preservation Act and Wilderness Act, but also with the management of visitor use along a corridor containing relatively recent traces of …

Eastern Montana Data Growth: 2019 Initiative To Increase Data Collection, Kara Grau, Megan Schultz Jul 2020

Eastern Montana Data Growth: 2019 Initiative To Increase Data Collection, Kara Grau, Megan Schultz

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

The purpose of this project is to provide Eastern Montana, and in turn, the entire state, with more robust sample sizes of the nonresident data collected year-round by ITRR. Increased sample size will allow for data specific to Eastern Montana regions, counties, towns, and sites to be more representative, and therefore, more beneficial in understanding the state of nonresident travel in that area. Additional data was collected by restructuring and adding additional nonresident surveying in the Eastern Montana regions. Included in this report is a summary of data collected from Eastern Montana travelers in comparison with the full data set.

Growing A Greater Understanding Of Multiplication Through Lesson Study: Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Professional Development, Mollie H. Appelgate, Lara Dick, Melissa Soto, Dittika Gupta Jun 2020

Growing A Greater Understanding Of Multiplication Through Lesson Study: Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Professional Development, Mollie H. Appelgate, Lara Dick, Melissa Soto, Dittika Gupta

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Research cites the need for developing teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) as well as for developing mathematics teacher educators’ (MTEs) mathematical knowledge for teaching teachers (MKTT). Using the framework of lesson study: formulating goals and researching, planning, implementing and observing, and reflecting (Lewis & Hurd, 2011), a group of MTEs designed and analyzed a lesson on multiplication for prospective elementary teachers. A qualitative analysis of MTE journal reflections and prospective teacher work showed a greater understanding of MTEs’ MKTT related to multiplication after completion of the lesson study. The authors recommend MTEs conduct lesson studies for other mathematics topics …

Teaching The Mathematics That Teachers Need To Know: Classroom Ideas For Supporting Prospective Elementary Teachers’ Development Of Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching, Eric W. Kuennen, John E. Beam Jun 2020

Teaching The Mathematics That Teachers Need To Know: Classroom Ideas For Supporting Prospective Elementary Teachers’ Development Of Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching, Eric W. Kuennen, John E. Beam

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The goal of this article is to articulate aspects of mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) that should be addressed in college mathematics content courses for prospective teachers (PTs), and to make research- and practice-based recommendations of class activities, materials, and strategies in support of developing this knowledge. We describe class activities that engage PTs in problem solving as a means of making sense of the content that they will later teach and that immerse them in the mathematics practices that they will later need to foster with their own students. We also provide examples of how mathematics manipulatives, school curriculum …

Fostering And Modeling The Common Core Standards For Mathematical Practice In Content Courses For Prospective Elementary Teachers, Stephanie Bernander, Jennifer E. Szydlik, Carol E. Seaman Jun 2020

Fostering And Modeling The Common Core Standards For Mathematical Practice In Content Courses For Prospective Elementary Teachers, Stephanie Bernander, Jennifer E. Szydlik, Carol E. Seaman

The Mathematics Enthusiast

What do prospective elementary teachers (PTs) need to learn about the nature and practice of mathematics? What pedagogy is powerful in achieving those learning outcomes? This article focuses on ways to foster and model a classroom culture of doing mathematics with PTs. We describe ways to support them in solving problems, using and valuing precise language and notation, making sense of definitions, conjecturing, generalizing, and in communicating and justifying their mathematical thinking. We assert that participation in authentic mathematical practices provides PTs with the mathematical disposition and the tools to continue to learn mathematics long after they leave your classroom; …
