The application of sulfur single-wavelength anomalous dispersion (S-SAD) to determine the crystal structures of macromolecules can be challenging if the asymmetric unit is large, the crystals are small, the size of the anomalously scattering sulfur structure is large and the resolution at which the anomalous signals can be accurately measured is modest. Here, as a study of such a case, approaches to the SAD phasing of orthorhombic Ric-8A crystals are described. The structure of Ric-8A was published with only a brief description of the phasing process [Zeng et al. (2019), Structure, 27, 1137-1141]. Here, alternative approaches to determining the 40-atom …

Despite a strong conceptual basis for the importance of stoichiometric flexibility in terrestrial ecosystems, surprisingly little is known about its nature, extent, and consequences. To address this knowledge gap, I leveraged UGP funds to explore this question in multiple ways.

The Articulation Principle For Making Long-Term Sense Of Mathematical Expressions By How They Are Spoken And Heard: Two Case Studies, Kin Eng Chin, Fui Fong Jiew, David Tall

The Articulation Principle explains how mathematical expressions can be given a clear and unambiguous meaning by the way in which they are spoken and heard. Leaving short pauses in speech, sub-expressions can be interpreted as operations to be carried out in time or as mental objects that can be manipulated at a more sophisticated level. This offers a fundamental foundation for the growth of meaningful mathematical thinking at all levels from young children to the wide array of adult mathematics. The objective of this article is to discuss actions of agency by analyzing the practices and conceptions of a mathematics teacher working in the municipal school system of Valinhos, state of São Paulo, while teaching statistics and probability to students in the final years of elementary school. The concept of agency is related to transformative capacity and refers to the power of the individual over the context in which they are inserted.
