Rural Public Access And The Americans With Disabilities Act: Measuring Progress In Hamilton, Montana, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Jul 2008

Rural Public Access And The Americans With Disabilities Act: Measuring Progress In Hamilton, Montana, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is arguably the most significant single effort to enhance community participation of people with disabilities (Brown, 2001), in part by promoting physical access to public places and commercial facilities. Specifically, ADA Titles II and III provide disability advocates with legal tools for promoting access to public places. Despite the significance of the ADA legislation, Batavia (1992) points out that the ADA was “passed without documentation of need” and that “no baseline data exist to assess the implementation of the ADA.” Historically, advocates have monitored the implementation and outcomes of the ADA by …

E(Race)Ing Race From A National Conversation On Mathematics Teaching And Learning: The National Mathematics Advisory Panel As White Institutional Space, Danny Bernard Martin Jul 2008

E(Race)Ing Race From A National Conversation On Mathematics Teaching And Learning: The National Mathematics Advisory Panel As White Institutional Space, Danny Bernard Martin

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, I wish to argue that several factors support a characterization of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel as an instantiation of the white institutional space (Moore, 2008) that characterizes mathematics education research and policy contexts more generally. In particular, my analysis highlights that mathematics education research and policy contexts such as the National Mathematics Advisory Panel are not immune to the structural and institutional racism that characterize many other areas of U.S. society.

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In 2006, President Bush appointed the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (NMAP henceforth) which issued its Final Report on March 13, 2008. The Final Report (summary), plus reports of three subcommittees and five Task Groups, together with two appendices containing the Presidential Executive Order setting up the panel, and details of the panel membership and other personnel, can be downloaded from www.ed.gov/about/bdscomm/list/mathpanel/index.html

Novel Weapons: Invasive Plant Suppresses Fungal Mutualists In America But Not In Its Native Europe, Ragan M. Callaway, Don Cipollini, Kathryn Barto, Giles C. Thelen, Steven G. Hallett, Daniel Prati, Kristina Stinson, John Klironomos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Why some invasive plant species transmogrify from weak competitors at home to strong competitors abroad remains one of the most elusive questions in ecology. Some evidence suggests that disproportionately high densities of some invaders are due to the release of biochemicals that are novel, and therefore harmful, to naïve organisms in their new range. So far, such evidence has been restricted to the direct phytotoxic effects of plants on other plants. Here we found that one of North America's most aggressive invaders of undisturbed forest understories, Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) and a plant that inhibits mycorrhizal fungal mutualists of North …

Language, Sovereignty, Cultural Contestation, And American Indian Schools: No Child Left Behind And A Navajo Test Case, Teresa Winstead, Adrea Lawrence, Edward J. Brantmeier, Christopher J. Frey Jan 2008

Language, Sovereignty, Cultural Contestation, And American Indian Schools: No Child Left Behind And A Navajo Test Case, Teresa Winstead, Adrea Lawrence, Edward J. Brantmeier, Christopher J. Frey

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

In this interpretive analysis elucidating fundamental tensions of the implementation of the 2001 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act within Native-serving schools, we point to ways in which NCLB further limits the already contested sovereignty tribes exercise over how, and in what language their children are instructed. We discuss issues related to the self-determination exercised by schools, some problematic cultural assumptions inherent in the NCLB law, and the legal tension between NCLB and the 1990/1992 Native American Languages Act. Finally, we examine the detrimental effects that NCLB accountability measures could have on Navajo communities, and look at how the Navajo …

Dynamic human relationships with wilderness: Developing a relationship model

Chair: William T. Borrie

Wilderness managers are charged with the challenging goal of balancing resource protection and experience quality across a broad, value-laden landscape. While research has provided insight into visitor motivations, psychological outcomes, and meanings, a struggle exists to implement experiential concepts within current management frameworks. A need also exists to manage wilderness for concepts outside of setting attributes. This research posits the human experience of wilderness to be an evolving, enduring relationship. Therefore, research needs can be addressed by investigating and conceptualizing an …

Relational Transgressions In Romantic Relationships: How Individuals Negotiate The Revelation And Concealment Of Transgression Information Within The Social Network, Melissa A. Maier Jan 2008

Relational Transgressions In Romantic Relationships: How Individuals Negotiate The Revelation And Concealment Of Transgression Information Within The Social Network, Melissa A. Maier

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study examined how individuals negotiate the revelation and concealment of information following an act of infidelity within the social network. Research has shown that individuals experience a tension when deciding to reveal and/or conceal information regarding a relational transgression (Baxter, 1994, Baxter & Braithwaite, 2007). Drawing on dialectical tensions (Baxter, 1990), relational transgressions (Roloff & Cloven, 1994), and support networks (Cutrona and Suhr, 1992; Klein & Milardo, 2000), this project posed a number of research questions. Interviews were conducted with 22 participants regarding their communication following the discovery of an act of infidelity. Participants were asked to discuss who …

Remember Gay Victims: An Exploration Into The History, Testimony, And Literature Of The Persecution Of Homosexuals By The Third Reich And Their Effect On A Queer Collective Consciousness, Paul D. Vestal Jan 2008

Remember Gay Victims: An Exploration Into The History, Testimony, And Literature Of The Persecution Of Homosexuals By The Third Reich And Their Effect On A Queer Collective Consciousness, Paul D. Vestal

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The persecution of homosexuals by the Nazis under National Socialism during the Second World War has historically been ignored and almost completely erased. However, within the past two and a half decades a significant number of historical, academic, sociological, and literary inquiries and works have uncovered this once forgotten past. Because of these investigations, the anti-homosexual actions inflicted upon gay men by the Third Reich have the ability to impact the continual creation of a queer collective memory and consciousness. Unfortunately, many queers do not know the historic connotations and denotation of the pink triangle—a symbol worn by homosexual males …

Park Visitors And The Natural Soundscape: Winter Experience Dimensions In Yellowstone National Park, Shelley Walker Saxen Jan 2008

Park Visitors And The Natural Soundscape: Winter Experience Dimensions In Yellowstone National Park, Shelley Walker Saxen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The natural soundscape is becoming increasingly recognized as a threatened park resource. A variety of policies, laws, and regulations have rapidly been established that affect the National Park Service mandate and require the agency and individual parks to protect, preserve, and restore natural sounds. National Parks are grappling with how to manage the newly legitimized natural soundscape resource and this research provides some of the first significant knowledge of visitor experiences of park soundscapes and preferences for management policies. The role of the natural soundscape in visitor experiences was explored through both interview and survey data with the primary goal …
