The Intersection Of Race And Criminal History In Perceptions Of Native Americans And Hiring, Sierra B. Streuli Jan 2021

The Intersection Of Race And Criminal History In Perceptions Of Native Americans And Hiring, Sierra B. Streuli

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studies show that race-based discrimination exists in the hiring process. Many minority job candidates experience this phenomenon, especially when a criminal record is present. The intersection of possessing a Native American identity and having a criminal history has yet to be examined. This research compares the experience of Native American job candidates (some with a criminal history and some without) to white job candidates (some with a criminal history and some without) to see how these varying points of identity influence hiring process decisions in a fictitious hiring scenario. Using an online questionnaire based on Foschi and Valenzuela’s (2015) study …

Bridging Boundaries: Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge And The International Child Welfare Movement, 1910-1948, Anya Jabour

History Faculty Publications

As a social worker and social reformer in Chicago, a policy consultant for the U.S. Children’s Bureau, and an active participant in both European and Latin American reform movements, Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge (1866-1948) was an integral part of the child welfare movement at the local, national, and international levels throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Summing up Breckinridge’s four decades of child welfare advocacy, Children’s Bureau Chief Katharine Lenroot declared, “The children of the world are richer because she lived and cared.”[i] Indeed, Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge and the international child welfare movement advanced child welfare, international cooperation, and …

Using Transformative Learning Theory To Help Prospective Teachers Learn Mathematics That They Already “Know”, Kim Johnson, Dana Olanoff Jun 2020

Using Transformative Learning Theory To Help Prospective Teachers Learn Mathematics That They Already “Know”, Kim Johnson, Dana Olanoff

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Prospective Teachers (PTs) often enter their mathematics content courses believing that they know enough mathematics to teach elementary school. However, research has shown that much of PTs’ knowledge is procedurally based and lacks depth and conceptual understanding. One job of Mathematics Teacher Educators (MTEs) in mathematics content courses is to help PTs become more mathematically proficient, by relearning the mathematics that they believe they already know in deeper, more connected ways. We suggest that one way for MTEs to do this is to incorporate Transformative Learning Theory (TLT) into their mathematics content courses. TLT is an application of andragogy, which …

Family Environment And Attachment In Relation To Complex Trauma And C-Ptsd, Susan Elizabeth Ocean Jan 2020

Family Environment And Attachment In Relation To Complex Trauma And C-Ptsd, Susan Elizabeth Ocean

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Childhood traumatic experiences occurring during critical developmental stages are strongly linked to poor mental health outcomes during adulthood, including PTSD. Yet, individuals who have experienced multiple traumas (and across developmental stages) report a profile of symptoms that is not well-represented by traditional PTSD diagnostic criteria. Recent research suggests that resulting post-traumatic stress after the experience of complex trauma should be considered a separate, yet related, disorder from the well-established PTSD. Since traumatic experiences are commonplace and often detrimental, establishing which factors contribute to risk and resilience is of great importance. Having secure attachment to a primary caregiver and family cohesion …

Effects Of A Suicide Assessment And Intervention Training On Participant Preparedness, Comfort, And Competence, Kelley Margaret Donisthorpe

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study evaluated the effects of a six-hour strength-based suicide assessment and treatment workshop on participants knowledge, feelings of comfort and preparedness, skills and confidence, and self-reported suicide competence. Participants included school and mental health counselors, as well as other professions in related fields who completed one of the three workshops in Billings, Bozeman, or Victor, Montana. Participants completed a pretest before engaging in the six-hour workshop, and then completed a posttest packet immediately following the workshop. Participants were assessed using the SCAF (Cramer et al., 2013), and three unpublished measures: Suicide Knowledge Quiz (SKQ), Suicide Skills Survey (SF-SSS), and …

The Home As A Site Of Family Communicated Narrative Sense-Making: Grief, Meaning, And Identity Through “Cleaning Out The Closet”, Kendyl A. Barney Jan 2020

The Home As A Site Of Family Communicated Narrative Sense-Making: Grief, Meaning, And Identity Through “Cleaning Out The Closet”, Kendyl A. Barney

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study utilized communicated narrative sense-making theory to explore the process of sorting through a deceased loved one’s belongings and changing the home after loss (referred to as “cleaning out the closet”), as the site of family communication and storytelling. Through storytelling, families make order of the disordered experience that is bereavement by negotiating meaning, identity, and family. The stories told about and within the process of “cleaning out the closet” elicit rich insight on each family’s experience with bereavement, loss, and life with each other. “Cleaning out the closet” narratives shed light on the interactions that occur between family …

The Effects Of Training In Evidence-Based Relationships On Counselor Self-Efficacy And Client Outcomes In Practicum, Kimberly K. Parrow Jan 2020

The Effects Of Training In Evidence-Based Relationships On Counselor Self-Efficacy And Client Outcomes In Practicum, Kimberly K. Parrow

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study evaluated the effects of an evidence-based relationship factors training (EBRFs) on the self-efficacy of counselors-in-training (CITs), the therapeutic relationship, and the mental health outcomes of clients. Participants included masters level CITs and their assigned undergraduate student clients (USCs). The USCs were a non-clinical sample enrolled in a course on intimate relationships. A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent pretest-posttest design was employed to measure the effects of the EBRFs training with the following assessments: Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scale (Lent et al., 2003), Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory OS-40, MO-40 (Barrett-Lennard, 2015), Outcome Rating Scale (Miller, Duncan, Sparks, & Claud, 2003), Session Rating Scale (Duncan …

Best Therapeutic Practices For First Responders, Hannah Debellis Jan 2020

Best Therapeutic Practices For First Responders, Hannah Debellis

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The purpose of this study is to provide a condensed, concise list in which first responders can see the best therapeutic practices for them at this time. At this time, the rate of suicide for firefighters is approximately eight times higher than that of the average person. Given this rate, I am interested in doing a metanalysis to find which techniques and therapeutic methods are most effective and to find the empirical data to support their success. I will be gathering data from various sources such as the APA, Medical Journals, International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), etc., and use SPSS …

Loneliness And The Aging Population, Nelson W. Weaver Apr 2019

Loneliness And The Aging Population, Nelson W. Weaver

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Previous research has shown social isolation and loneliness contribute to decreased quality of life, as well as compromised psychological and physical health among older adults. This represents a public health crisis in the context of a growing aging population anticipated to cost the United States over 126 billion dollars. The purpose of this research review is to build the case for conducting an effectiveness study aimed to reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation in the aging population. To achieve this aim, I review the various characteristics of the aging population, the social and financial ramifications associated with social isolation …
