Msw Portfolio: Becoming Political, Stephanie Herther

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

This portfolio captures my transformation through the University of Montana’s Master of Social Work program, shaped by both academic study and years of living and working abroad in under-resourced communities. Over three years, I have come to see the personal as inseparable from the political, grounding my practice in trauma-informed care, culturally responsive engagement, and the power of narrative-therapy. Guided by systems theory, attachment theory, and Critical Race Theory, I have woven together direct practice, community work, and policy advocacy to challenge inequities and honor the dignity of those most impacted by them. Each competency reflects not only skill development …

Self-Determination In The Implementation Of Treaty Reserved Rights, Kekek Jason Stark Jul 2025

Self-Determination In The Implementation Of Treaty Reserved Rights, Kekek Jason Stark

Faculty Law Review Articles

After fifty years of implementing tribal treaty reserved rights, this article will examine how tribal courts are determining cases involving treaty reserved rights and resources and to the extent tribal courts are recognizing and utilizing tribal customary law. This analysis will include a summary of tribal treaty harvest management systems and the how in the recognition of treaty reserved rights, federal courts have often limited tribes in their ability to fully implement and utilize tribal customary law. In response, I argue that as tribes enter the next fifty years of treaty rights implementation that the presumption of primary management should …

Intra-Seasonal Shifts In Summer Elk Diet Composition, Ava E. Window Apr 2025

Intra-Seasonal Shifts In Summer Elk Diet Composition, Ava E. Window

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Elk (Cervus canadensis) require adequate forage to fulfill their seasonal nutritional requirements. Elk undergo their highest nutritional demands during summer to support critical life functions such as late gestation, lactation, and juvenile growth. During this period, variations in plant phenology significantly influence the quality and quantity of forage on the landscape. Recent literature has concentrated on late summer due to it's limiting nature. Yet, growing evidence suggests that both early and late summer forage often fail to meet the nutritional demands of lactating and reproducing female elk. Further, there is limited knowledge surrounding the intra-seasonal dynamics of elk …

Cervid Breakage Patterns In Western Montana, Tanner D. Liermann Apr 2025

Cervid Breakage Patterns In Western Montana, Tanner D. Liermann

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Sexual weapons are expected to withstand intense combat as weapon failure can directly impact an individual's reproductive success. Most weapons are permanent and a broken weapon costs that animal for the rest of its life. However, a few species regrow their weapons. The consequences of structural failure are lower in these animals, and they may invest less in their production as a result—leading to increased rates of breakage in the wild. Cervids (true deer) regenerate antlers each year, yet their rates of weapon failure remain unclear. In our study, we recorded breakage rates, antler point symmetry, harvest location, and age …

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

PURPOSE: Examine the effect of a five-day hiking intervention with load carriage on cytoplasmic protein fractional synthetic rates in apparently healthy males and females. METHOD: 18 recreationally active participants (8M, 10F; 28 ± 6 yr; VO₂peak: 47.7 ± 8.2 mL・kg-1・min-1) consumed labeled (2H2O) water for 10 days prior and throughout a 5-day pack-loaded hiking protocol. Participants completed two 60-minute hiking laps, with distance and elevation gain of 3.3 ± 0.6 km, 431 ± 86 m per lap, respectively. Participants returned to the starting point between each lap and rested for 15 minutes. Intensity was …

Myofibrillar Proteomics Of Sustained Load-Carriage Hiking, Rachel Perez, Mahalakshmi Shanakaran, Hussein Mohammed, Marc Hellerstein, Walter Hailes, Brent Ruby

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Load-carriage hiking is a popular recreational activity and an integral part of daily tasks for military personnel and wildland firefighters. Investigation is therefore warranted into myofibrillar responses to such activities. PURPOSE: To evaluate myofibrillar adaptations to acute load-carriage hiking. METHODS: Thirty-two recreationally active adults (12M, 20F; 28±6 yr; VO₂peak: 47.7±8.2 mL・kg-1・min-1) participated in a 5-day load-carriage study. Participants consumed 50ml deuterated water(2H2O) thrice daily for the 10 days prior to and twice daily during the five consecutive days of hiking for the measurement of fractional protein synthesis rates …

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Environmental Factors Influencing the Development of Disordered Eating in Female Collegiate Athletes

Pepper, A, Moody, VJ: University of Montana

Context: Disordered eating is a disturbance in a patient's typical eating pattern that spans a wide range of behaviors typically used to lose or maintain an unhealthy weight. Disordered eating behaviors increase the risk of developing eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Disordered eating prevalence has been reported as 20% higher in female collegiate athletes when compared to their male counterparts; however, few differences have been reported in prevalence when comparing female college students and female collegiate athletes. …
