Women Behind Bars: A History Of Montana Female Offenders And Their Portrayal In Montana Media; 1909-1960, Cassidy A. Vander Voort

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge opened when the state was still a territory in 1870. While it was open it housed not only men but a number of women. The first female inmate arrived in Deer Lodge in 1867 and the prison quickly realized it had no adequate housing for female prisoners. In the eyes of the general public women were not meant to be criminals and the territory had not prepared for them. Both violent and non-violent female offenders were housed in the prison during this time. The prison records of 189 women have been recently digitized …

Librarians and archivists are often early adopters and experimenters with new technologies. Our field is also interested in critically engaging with technology, and we are well-positioned to be leaders in the slow and careful consideration of new technologies. Therefore, as librarians and archivists have begun using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance library services, we also aim to interrogate the ethical issues that arise while using AI to enhance collection description and discovery and streamline reference services and teaching. The IMLS-funded Responsible AI in Libraries and Archives project aims to create resources that will help practitioners make ethical decisions when implementing …

Tiktok V. Montana - State Tiktok Ban Blocked By Court Based On Foreign Affairs Preemption, Anna C. Conley Feb 2024

Tiktok V. Montana - State Tiktok Ban Blocked By Court Based On Foreign Affairs Preemption, Anna C. Conley

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article examines the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana's decision to preliminarily enjoin enforcement of Montana’s state law banning TikTok, citing foreign affairs preemption. The court found that the law conflicted with federal authority under the Defense Production Act (DPA), intruded upon the federal domain of foreign affairs, and violated the dormant foreign commerce clause. The case, now on appeal to the Ninth Circuit, highlights the tension between state-level regulation and federal control over foreign relations, particularly in the context of national security concerns surrounding Chinese-owned technology platforms. The article explores the legal arguments presented by TikTok …

Productive Struggle In Mathematical Modelling, Piera Biccard Feb 2024

Productive Struggle In Mathematical Modelling, Piera Biccard

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Productive struggle is an enigmatic concept in mathematics education. At first glance, the idea may be oxymoronic since the word struggle is not often associated with being productive. The two words may even seem counter-intuitive. The purpose of this article is to analyze productive struggle in the literature in order to better understand some if its essential features. The research method in this study is theoretical and includes a survey of relevant literature in mathematics and modelling education. This study attempts to explain the relationship between productive struggle and learning mathematics. Productive struggle can lead to enhanced mathematics understanding and …

Today’S Mathematics Student: Take Two, Carmen M. Latterell

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Current mathematics students are members of Generation Z, a generation proving to be quite different than previous ones. Generation Z has never known a time without Google, nor a time of safety. Generation Z has a declining tendency to even attend college. If they do attend college, their expectations need to be met to keep them engaged in mathematics. Professors will need to adjust pedagogy.

"I Live My Best Life In The Garden": Project Dig Summary Report, Tracy Boehm Barrett, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are commonly overlooked in society because of a combination of social, economic, political, and cultural barriers. Due to such constraints, they also experience a wide range of health and community disparities that result in negative impact on their quality of life and well-being (Mpofu et al., 2020; Akyurek & Bumin, 2017). While many community-based organizations provide a variety of supports for people with disabilities, far less common are those providing therapeutic horticulture (TH) programs within the scope of their services. This report provides information about and recommendations for TH as an increased practice …

The Spirit Of Mathematical Modeling – A Philosophical Study On The Occasion Of 50 Years Of Mathematical Modeling Education, Peter Frejd, Pauline Vos Feb 2024

The Spirit Of Mathematical Modeling – A Philosophical Study On The Occasion Of 50 Years Of Mathematical Modeling Education, Peter Frejd, Pauline Vos

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We mark the 50th anniversary of mathematical modeling education by reviving the term the spirit of mathematical modeling (SoMM), which idealistically reflects core aspects of mathematical modeling. The basis of our analysis is the notion of bildung, which is an educational philosophy that strives for harmonizing heart, mind, social life and culture. We built SoMM on five descriptions of mathematical modeling: two research studies from the 1970s, two studies about the work of professional modelers, and one about an environmental school project. We captured SoMM as a collection of aspects at the micro, meso and macro level: at the micro …
