This master's portfolio, "Corporate Environmental Responsibility: Navigating Policy, Impact, and Equity," explores the profound impact of corporations on environmental degradation. It comprises three key pieces:

The first piece, "Understanding Factors Shaping Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility: Navigating a Path Towards Greater Accountability," examines seven critical areas influencing corporate conduct: legal frameworks, global trade, multilateral development banks, international investment laws and agreements, corporate lobbying, transparency and environmental accountability, and economic growth priorities. The analysis covers historical contexts and contemporary challenges, advocating for robust regulatory measures and ethical business practices.

The second piece, "Treatment as a State (TAS) under the Clean Air …

Montana Voices Amplified: My Perspective: Tell People What You Need! We’Re All In This Together, Maclaen R. Burningham, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Birmingham, a person with Prader-Willi Syndrome who is a self-advocate and serves on the Rural Institute’s Consumer Advisory Council, explains the benefits in starting that conversation yourself and finding freedom and success in openly asking others for their assistance.

Griz Give-And-Get: Understanding The Context, Philosophy, And Logistics Behind A Project To Reduce Waste At The University Of Montana, Sam Sullivan

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

Griz Give-and-Get is an online platform at the University of Montana that aims to reduce consumer waste. It attempts to do this by providing students and staff with a place to give away their used items. The first objective of this essay is to describe the process behind Griz Give-and-Get’s early development. The second objective is to relate concepts from environmental philosophy to Griz Give-and-Get’s mission. Although part of Griz Give-and-Get’s mission is to build community and to mitigate the effects of student poverty, this essay will narrow its focus to explore the first issue that Griz Give-and-Get concerns itself …

(De)Composition: Earthen Storytelling For Collective Liberation, Priya Subberwal

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

This interdisciplinary portfolio is an investigation into ecological communication through pedagogical design, online collaborative learning spaces, digital and print media, and creative writing. Braiding lenses of queer ecology, decolonial studies, anarchism, and collaborative and creative practice, this work hopes to explore the field of environmental communication through avenues that are reciprocal, community-driven, and oriented towards environmental justice and collective, intersectional liberation. Through the three distinct components of 1) the creation and facilitation of an online learning community, the Spiritual Ecology Study Club at Advaya, 2) the editing and production of two issues of Camas Magazine, an environmental literary magazine based …

Parental Controlling Behaviors And The Well-Being Of Adult Children, Audrey Greene, Elle Lundgren, Lindsay Story, Finn Anderson, Liam Johnson Apr 2024

Parental Controlling Behaviors And The Well-Being Of Adult Children, Audrey Greene, Elle Lundgren, Lindsay Story, Finn Anderson, Liam Johnson

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

Parental psychological control (PPC) can drastically influence a child’s development and multiple dimensions of their young adult lives, including their sense of self-efficacy and ability to regulate their emotions. This study examines the impact of PPC on adult children between the ages of 18 – 26. Sixty-four volunteers responded to a social media announcement for an online survey including measures of perceived parental psychological control, self-efficacy, and emotional dysregulation. The results indicated that as parents were perceived as engaging in higher levels of psychologically controlling behaviors, participants also reported significantly lower levels of self-efficacy and higher levels of emotional dysregulation. …

Contemporary Mythology: Poems Of Creatures And Grievances, Zane G. Segal Apr 2024

Contemporary Mythology: Poems Of Creatures And Grievances, Zane G. Segal

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Urban legends and modern folklore have never been popular subjects in the canon of serious poetry, despite their more ancient counterparts being frequently coveted content. In a post-science world, the uncanny hearsay of yesteryear has lost its star power, and the act of believing in such myths has been relegated to an embarrassing pastime of drunk uncles and gullible dimwits. However, Contemporary Mythology is a collection of poems which are not afraid to be embarrassed. By entertaining the lovable qualities of unlovable monsters, these poems seek the resonance which keep urban legends comfortably lodged in the backlogs of American culture. …

Assessing American Attitudes: Welfare Perceptions Over Time By Race, Gender And Education, Liliana H. Silver Apr 2024

Assessing American Attitudes: Welfare Perceptions Over Time By Race, Gender And Education, Liliana H. Silver

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Income and wealth inequality in the United States have skyrocketed since the 1970s, making the country increasingly unequal (Hout 2021; Lee 2023; Piketty and Saez 2014). Researchers disagree on whether overall support for redistribution in the United States has changed in the last several decades (Ashok et al. 2016; Lee 2023; Pittau et al. 2016) but recent studies suggest the country has seen a significant political realignment based on race and education. Education levels are increasingly becoming major determinants in this voter realignment (Kitschelt and Rehm 2019). Much of the literature on attitudes toward welfare exists in political science or …

The Impact Of Past Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence And Coercion On Abortion Attitudes, Grace M. Bintz, Selina Hardt Apr 2024

The Impact Of Past Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence And Coercion On Abortion Attitudes, Grace M. Bintz, Selina Hardt

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Recent changes to the abortion laws across the United States have had a profound impact on the psychological well-being and overall health of women. The extent and ways that people support or oppose access to abortion may be influenced by personal experiences of sexual violence and coercion. To understand the implications of legal actions towards women’s reproductive health, this study explores associations between abortion attitudes and experiences of reproductive coercion, non-partner sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and perceptions of people actively seeking abortion access. In this study, participants were asked about their personal attitudes towards abortion, and their experiences of …

Disinformation's Detriment To Democracy: A Russian-African Case Study, Jorgia R. Hawthorne Apr 2024

Disinformation's Detriment To Democracy: A Russian-African Case Study, Jorgia R. Hawthorne

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The research project will revolve around Russian disinformation campaigns in Africa and the effects of those campaigns on African democracies. The project will also include explanations of the intersection of reliable information and functioning democracy as well as Russian motivations behind the campaigns.

As a political science and journalism student, I am interested in misinformation/disinformation and how/why it is so influential in the health of a democracy. I’ve done research into these phenomena in the United States, but the Russian attacks in Africa appear to be more coordinated. Additionally, African democracies have become increasingly more unstable and I would like …

Anthropology On Social Media, Danielle Airola M.A. Mar 2024

Anthropology On Social Media, Danielle Airola M.A.

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In 2018, only about half of Americans (49%) agreed that “human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals,” and 38% that “the universe began with a big explosion” (Besley and Hill, 2020). These basic facts may be well understood by the scientific and academic communities, but how do we go about disseminating this sort of knowledge to the general public? What about more nuanced and detailed information that may affect people’s understanding of our human heritage or health? Social media has great potential for increasing the reach and broadening the understanding of individuals. However, it …

Exploring How A State Professional Counseling Association Can Support Counselors In Meeting The Mental Health Needs Of Montanans, Cynthia R. Boyle Mar 2024

Exploring How A State Professional Counseling Association Can Support Counselors In Meeting The Mental Health Needs Of Montanans, Cynthia R. Boyle

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The development of counseling as a profession is notable, evolving as helpers responded to human needs in a variety of specialty areas and ultimately coalescing and conceptualized as a full, unique professional identity. While large national counseling associations support the counseling profession as a whole, there is scant research on the unique needs of counselors in a large, rural state like Montana. Counselors must keep abreast of current research on diagnosis and treatment, innovative clinical interventions and on legislative issues that impact their credentialing, reimbursement, and increasingly seek to determine who can and cannot receive counseling services.

This is an …
