Community Woodstove Changeout And Impact On Ambient Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Phenolics, Tony J. Ward, Christopher P. Palmer, James E. Houck, William C. Navidi, Steve Geinitz, Curtis W. Noonan Jun 2009

Community Woodstove Changeout And Impact On Ambient Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Phenolics, Tony J. Ward, Christopher P. Palmer, James E. Houck, William C. Navidi, Steve Geinitz, Curtis W. Noonan

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

A large woodstove changeout program was carried out in Libby, Montana, with the goal of reducing ambient levels of PM2.5. This provided researchers the opportunity to measure ambient concentrations of phenolic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) before, during, and after the changeout of nearly 1200 stoves to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Starting in the heating season of 2004/2005 and ending in the heating season of 2007/2008, 19 compounds were measured every three days using a high-volume polyurethane foam (PUF) sampler followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis. Some of the organic species with the highest …

Louisiana researchers and universities are leading a concentrated, collaborative effort to advance statewide e-Research through a new cyberinfrastructure: computing systems, data storage systems, advanced instruments and data repositories, visualization environments and people, all linked together by software programs and high-performance networks. This effort has led to a set of interlinked projects that have started making a significant difference in the state, and has created an environment that encourages increased collaboration, leading to new e-Research. This paper describes the overall effort, the new projects and environment and the results to date.

What Drives Long-Distance Dispersal? A Test Of Theoretical Predictions, Winsor H. Lowe Jun 2009

What Drives Long-Distance Dispersal? A Test Of Theoretical Predictions, Winsor H. Lowe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) may contribute disproportionately to species persistence in fragmented landscapes, non-native invasions, and range shifts in response to climate change. However, direct data on LDD are extremely limited, leaving us with little understanding of why it occurs. I used six years of mark–recapture data on the stream salamander Gyrinophilus porphyriticus to test theoretical predictions of how variation in habitat quality affects LDD. Frequency of LDD was quantified using the kurtosis of yearly movement distributions from recaptured animals in a 1-km headwater stream. Temporal and spatial variation in habitat quality were quantified with spatially explicit data on the body …

Tailings Tale: Mike Horse Looms Dark Over The Blackfoot, Elizabeth L. Harrison May 2009

Tailings Tale: Mike Horse Looms Dark Over The Blackfoot, Elizabeth L. Harrison

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

In the spring of 1975, a heavy rain blew out an earthen dam holding back toxic metal waste from the now defunct Mike Horse mine at the headwaters of the scenic Big Blackfoot River. Federal agencies, a corporate mining giant, and the small town community of Lincoln, Montana, grapple with the repercussions and future of the watershed.

Ecological Facilitation May Drive Major Evolutionary Transitions, Zaal Kikvidze, Ragan M. Callaway May 2009

Ecological Facilitation May Drive Major Evolutionary Transitions, Zaal Kikvidze, Ragan M. Callaway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

There is a growing consensus among ecologists that ecological facilitation comprises a historically overlooked but crucial suite of biotic interactions. Awareness of such positive interactions has recently led to substantial modifications in ecological theory. In this article we suggest how facilitation may be included in evolutionary theory. Natural selection based on competition provides a conceptually complete paradigm for speciation, but not for major evolutionary transitions-the emergence of new and more complex biological structures such as cells, organisms, and eusocial populations. We find that the successful theories developed to solve these specific problematic transitions show a consistent pattern: they focus on …

Extensive Phylogenetic Analysis Of A Soil Bacterial Community Illustrates Extreme Taxon Evenness And The Effects Of Amplicon Length, Degree Of Coverage, And Dna Fractionation On Classification And Ecological Parameters, Sergio E. Morales, Theodore F. Cosart, Jesse Johnson, William Holben Feb 2009

Cosart, Jesse Johnson, William Holben

Computer Science Faculty Publications

To thoroughly investigate the bacterial community diversity present in a single composite sample from an agricultural soil and to examine potential biases resulting from data acquisition and analytical approaches, we examined the effects of percent G+C DNA fractionation, sequence length, and degree of coverage of bacterial diversity on several commonly used ecological parameters (species estimation, diversity indices, and evenness). We also examined variation in phylogenetic placement based on multiple commonly used approaches (ARB alignments and multiple RDP tools). The results demonstrate that this soil bacterial community is highly diverse, with 1,714 operational taxonomic units demonstrated and 3,555 estimated (based on …

Loop Dynamics Of The Extracellular Domain Of Human Tissue Factor And Activation Of Factor Viia, Agnese S. Minazzo, Reuben C. Darlington, J. B. A. Ross Jan 2009

Loop Dynamics Of The Extracellular Domain Of Human Tissue Factor And Activation Of Factor Viia, Agnese S. Minazzo, Reuben C. Darlington, J. B. A. Ross

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

In the crystal structure of the complex between the soluble extracellular domain of tissue factor (sTF) and activesite- inhibited VIIa, residues 91 and 92 in the Pro79-Pro92 loop of sTF interact with the catalytic domain of VIIa. It is not known, however, whether this loop has a role in allosteric activation of VIIa. Time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy measurements of probes covalently bound to sTF mutants E84C and T121C show that binding uninhibited Factor VIIa affects segmental motions in sTF. Glu84 resides in the Pro79-Pro92 loop, and Thr121 resides in the turn between the …
