Professional Development: Possibilities And Restrictions For Mathematics Teachers In Lower Secondary School In Iceland, Guðný Helga Gunnarsdóttir Feb 2014

Professional Development: Possibilities And Restrictions For Mathematics Teachers In Lower Secondary School In Iceland, Guðný Helga Gunnarsdóttir

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Mathematics teachers in many parts of the world have been facing many challenges in recent years. In Iceland teachers in lower secondary school have been implementing a new reform oriented curriculum. Many researchers claim teachers need considerable support if they are to meet the demands of the current reforms in mathematics education. This paper explores whether mathematics teachers at lower secondary level in Iceland are given good opportunities to develop professionally during the last five years and if not what can possibly be done to improve the situation. My conclusion is that the opportunities given are limited and do not …

Changes To Snowpack Energy State From Spring Storm Events, Columbia River Headwaters, Montana, Zachary M. Seligman, Joel T. Harper, Marco P. Maneta Feb 2014

Changes To Snowpack Energy State From Spring Storm Events, Columbia River Headwaters, Montana, Zachary M. Seligman, Joel T. Harper, Marco P. Maneta

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The generation and release of meltwater during the spring snowmelt season can be delayed because of spring storm episodes with snow accumulation and/or sustained subfreezing temperatures. The delayed release of snowmelt often extends beyond the particular storm event because of changes to the internal state of energy in the snowpack that prevents transmission of meltwater. Following a storm, two energy deficits internal to the snowpack must be overcome before surface melt can drain and exit the snowpack: 1) cold content created by heat lost during the episode must be removed and 2) dry pore space must be filled with liquid …

Teachers As Stakeholders In Mathematics Education Research, Konrad Krainer Feb 2014

Teachers As Stakeholders In Mathematics Education Research, Konrad Krainer

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper states three claims dealing with the relationship between mathematics education researchers and mathematics teachers: (1) Mathematics education research is a highly diverse field; (2) Teachers have various roles as stakeholders in mathematics education research; (3) Regarding teachers as stakeholders in mathematics education research affords reflecting some (fruitful) „cultural differences”. The paper claims the necessity to regard researchers as key stakeholders in practice, and teachers as key stakeholders in research.

What Teachers’ Want: Identifying Mathematics Teachers’ Professional Learning Needs, Kim Beswick Feb 2014

What Teachers’ Want: Identifying Mathematics Teachers’ Professional Learning Needs, Kim Beswick

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper reports on three differing approaches to ascertaining the professional learning (PL) needs of teachers of mathematics that were used in three PL projects. In each case the approach used was constrained to some extent by the project brief, practical considerations, and stakeholders’ preferences and abilities to contribute to determining the most useful focus of the PL. Nevertheless, there were consistent efforts to heed the advice in the literature about effective PL focusing on teachers’ needs in their particular contexts. The results of each approach are described and lessons about effective ways to identify mathematics teachers’ PL needs, and …

Approaching Professional Learning: What Teachers Want, Peter Liljedahl Feb 2014

Approaching Professional Learning: What Teachers Want, Peter Liljedahl

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Teachers do not come to professional learning opportunities as blank slates. Instead, they come to these settings with a complex collection of wants and needs. The research presented here takes a closer look at these wants across five different professional learning settings distilling form the data a taxonomy of five categories of wants that teachers may approach professional learning with. The resultant taxonomy, as well as teachers behaviours vis-à-vis this taxonomy indicate that we need to rethink our role as facilitators within these settings as well as the role that single workshops can play in the professional learning of teachers.

The Northwest Archivists Mentoring Program: A Case Study, Donna E. Mccrea, Elizabeth A. Nielsen, Anne Foster

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

The Northwest Archivists (NWA), a regional archival association in the Pacific Northwest, established a formal mentoring program in 2007. A pilot phase of the program ran for 2 years and included both formative and summative assessments from participants. This case study documents NWA’s experiences designing and managing a mentoring program within a volunteer-run professional association, reflects on the program’s successes and challenges, and recommends areas for future investigation.

Field Measurements Of Trace Gases Emitted By Prescribed Fires In Southeastern Us Pine Forests Using An Open-Path Ftir System, S. K. Akagi, I. R. Burling, A. Mendoza, T. J. Johnson, M. Cameron, David W. T. Griffith, C. Paton-Walsh, D. R. Weise, J. Reardon, Robert Yokelson

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We report trace-gas emission factors from three pine-understory prescribed fires in South Carolina, US measured during the fall of 2011. The fires were more intense than many prescribed burns because the fuels included mature pine stands not subjected to prescribed fire in decades that were lit following an extended drought. Emission factors were measured with a fixed open-path Fourier transform infrared (OP-FTIR) system that was deployed on the fire control lines. We compare these emission factors to those measured with a roving, point sampling, land-based FTIR and an airborne FTIR deployed on the same fires. We also compare to emission …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Single scattering albedo (ω) of fresh biomass burning (BB) aerosols produced from 92 controlled laboratory combustion experiments of 20 different woods and grasses was analyzed to determine the factors that control the variability in ω. Results show that ω varies strongly with fire-integrated modified combustion efficiency (MCEFI)—higher MCEFI results in lower ω values and greater spectral dependence of ω. A parameterization of ω as a function of MCEFI for fresh BB aerosols is derived from the laboratory data and is evaluated by field observations from two wildfires. The parameterization suggests that MCEFI explains 60% of …

Wilderness As A Social Movement: Expanding Cultural Relevance In The 21st Century, Dylan Lang Jan 2014

Wilderness As A Social Movement: Expanding Cultural Relevance In The 21st Century, Dylan Lang

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This year is the 50th anniversary of two monumental pieces of legislation: the Wilderness Act and the Civil Rights Act. Though these two laws exist within different arenas of public affairs, both have had significant effects on American society.

The Wilderness Act was signed into law in 1964 with almost unanimous support, at a time when American society overwhelmingly supported its passage. Since 1964, wilderness has been criticized as an elitist ideal representing a small interest group in the United States. As our country becomes increasingly diverse, and public lands protection loses popular support, making wilderness more relevant to …

Extended Exposure:Advising Veterans Of Federal Criminal Jurisdiction Over In-Service Conduct, Hillary A. Wandler

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

The Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act of 2000 (MEJA) was primarily crafted to establish federal criminal jurisdiction over civilians employed by or accompanying the armed forces outside of the United States.9 This includes (1) civilian employees, (2) contractors and subcontractors, and (3) employees of contractors and subcontractors.10 Dependents of members of the armed forces and those “employed by the Armed Forces” also fall under the act’s jurisdiction. This article discuss various aspects of the MEJA.

Depositional Environment Of The St. Mary River Formation In Western Montana, Stacia M. Martineau Jan 2014

Depositional Environment Of The St. Mary River Formation In Western Montana, Stacia M. Martineau

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

In May 2013, the Two Medicine Dinosaur Center (TMDC) began excavation on a dinosaur bonebed in the St. Mary River Formation on Carey Butte, Montana. Since excavation started, four additional bonebeds have been discovered in the surrounding area. They display different depositional environments; two are in sandstone and the other three are in siltstone. The purpose of this study is to provide a depositional setting for the area that links all five sites together comprehensively by examining the sedimentology of the area. A stratigraphic analysis of the St. Mary River Formation of Carey Butte revealed four distinct facies associations. Facies …

The Process Of Creating Place-Based, Environmental Children’S Literature, Rose Dickson Jan 2014

The Process Of Creating Place-Based, Environmental Children’S Literature, Rose Dickson

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This paper summarizes the findings of a literature review on place-based education and presents the idea that environmental literature can be a tool for providing both parents and educators an avenue of offering children a place-based experience. It builds on the ideas that the most common barriers associated with ensuring that students are engaged with their place are time and monetary restraints. Literature minimizes these challenges by bringing a place-based experience into homes and classrooms and helps to inspire children and adults alike to explore their place and become actively engaged citizens. This paper then describes the process of creating …
